Around the time 4,000-1,000 BC there were two major western civilizations. Those civilizations were the Ancient Egyptians and the Mesopotamians. Many similarities exist between the civilizations of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as many differences. Both Egypt and Mesopotamia were polytheistic, that is, they believed their worlds were ruled by more than one god. Both cultures also believed that they themselves were created for the purpose of serving their gods. Their similarities include the existence of educational systems and codes of law. Their differences are found partly in those similarities, as well as their medical practices and their interpretations of the great floods. There are many patterns that are common of the civilizations of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, which shows that there were some patterns of development that might be common to early civilizations, but they probably didn’t have very much contact with each other.

Both of the civilizations believed in education. The people of Sumer were expected to do what was asked of them and to behave properly while in school. If the pupils were late for school or failed to complete their assignments, they would be beaten with a stick, or caned. One story about a Sumerian boy, who was not doing well in school, tells of the kinds of small things children would be punished for, such as poor penmanship. This story shows us how common this sort of discipline was “Who was in charge of drawing said ‘Why when I was not here did you stand up?’ caned me. My teacher said ‘Your hand is not good,’ caned me.” (A Sumerian Schoolboy, SPV 15). It seams that if they misbehaved at all during school they would be punished by being by a cane.

The school children of Egypt were advised by their fathers to be men of pride and to listen to their people. The advice that a father gave to his son was very important, telling that son how to behave to make both himself and his family proud. “Take counsel with the ignorant, as well as the wise” (A Father’s Advice, SPV 1) advises that wisdom may be found from the lips of all people; not only from the scholars or artisans, but from the slaves and common folk as well.

The Ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians had different theories as to how they came about and why they were created. Both civilizations believed that the gods created them. The Mesopotamians believed that the mightier gods forced the lesser gods into slavery, and that the Mesopotamian people were created to take over for those lesser gods when they revolted. “When the gods, like man, bore the work, carried the labor-basketthe labor-basket of the great godsthe work was heavy, much was the distress...” (A Creation Myth “Let Man Carry the Labor-Basket of the Gods, SPV 1) is saying that the lesser gods had to do the hard labor before man was created. “While Nintu is present, let the birth-goddess create the offspring, let man bear the labor-basket of the gods” was what Enlil said after he agreed to create humans to do the physical labor. “I have removed your heavy labor, have placed your labor-basket on man,” is what he said to the gods after humans were created. (A Creation Myth “Let Man Carry the Labor-Basket of the Gods, SPV 1).

The Egyptian creation theory is different from that of the Mesopotamians. The Egyptians thought that Khepri created all the humans and created the other gods as well. It was believed the Kherpi created the lesser gods from his spit and humans from his semen. “I planned in my own heart, and there came into being a multitude of forms of beings, the forms of children and the forms of their children. I was the one who copulated with my fist, I masturbated with my hand. Then I spewed with my own mouth I spat out what was Shu, and I sputtered out what was Tefnut.” (The Book of Knowing the Creations, HD #5

When asked to describe the ideal customer for my company, I thought it would be very simple. First, the customer would need my product badly. Second, they would have deep pockets. Finally, if the product was not as good as they expected, they wouldn’t complain at all and still buy my company’s product. As it turns out, that was just too simple. As I began to analyze the ideal customer for my company’s product, prescription drugs in this case, I found that at least two of the three didn’t even have to be necessarily true. My paper will try to explain how the ideal customer for my company might be determined.

The company I work for is a generic pharmaceutical company. There are many drugs made at our several plants. There are probably other generic companies making the same drugs we are. The purpose of our marketing department is to make sure we produce the right mix of products at the right price for the people out there that may get sick and need certain prescription drugs. That is not a simple task.

First, the customer must need or at least want some kind of product that we have the capability of producing. We would need to do research to see what is selling out in the marketplace and then see if it was possible to produce the product at a profit. The possibility always exists that there will be others that will produce the product faster, better or cheaper than us. We will have no patent to reduce competition. The possibility exists that we may be able to make the product, but not be able to sell it at a profit. It is critical to perform all the market research and judge the costs of producing the product before it is ever made.

How do you find that ideal customer in the vast numbers of potential customers? You have to look for them. Sometimes it is not so easy. Sure there are people with heart problems and then there are others with anxiety problems. Somebody somewhere has something wrong with him or herself that a medication can help with. The trick in pharmaceuticals is to find enough people you can help with a medication you can make at a profit. That brings us to the first statement that can

be made about the ideal customer. The ideal pharmaceutical customer is a person you can identify as a person needing, or possibly just wanting, your drug.

In Chapter 6 of the book, Basic Marketing, needs and wants are defined. Needs are things we cannot do without. Air, water and food are examples of needs. In prescription drugs there are some drugs that prolong life and without them a person would soon die. Those kinds of drugs produce a very strong drive to get them. The drive would be the will to live.

Wants, on the other hand, are a kind of learned need. You learn that a certain thing is something you like very much and it provides some kind satisfaction. Painkillers might a type of medicine that would create a need. You may be able to live without the comfort provided by the painkiller, but you may want to be without pain very much. If a painkiller provides comfort, learning occurs.

Learning about the drug providing relief from pain is based on direct experience. Seeing an ad on television portraying a person in major pain being miraculously relieved of their pain by some product is learning based on indirect experience (Perreault, McCarthy 1).

When a person feels the first signs of a headache coming on, that may be described as a cue. They then respond to the cue by taking some medicine. If the medicine is effective in taking away the pain that would tend to reinforce the response.

All this background leads to describing one more aspect of the ideal customer. When the customer buys a certain drug, they have some kind of drive that is telling them that getting the drug will provide some benefit to them. The cue may have been that the doctor told them it would help. They respond by getting the drug. It helps them get well, so next time they feel the same way they will ask their doctor to prescribe the same thing. Maybe the doctor will prescribe the same thing. If they do and it works again it just keeps on reinforcing the response of ordering the same thing. Generally, people are real careful about the drugs they take. If it works, they will stay with the same thing a long time. So, this leads to the second statement that can be made about the

ideal customer for the drug product.

“The ideal customer has gone through the learning process with the product medicine in this case and has developed an almost automatic response to use the product exclusively”

This response pretty much makes the deep pockets requirement for an ideal customer irrelevant. It may be that the drug is cheap or they may have learned about the drug so well that they will do about anything, up to a point, to get it. It is sometimes not so easy to afford prescription medication.

Now, what about those people that complain? I think they are just as important as the people that have learned to like the product and don’t have much of anything to say about the product. If you don’t get some criticism, how can you learn to improve? Criticism keeps you on your toes. I think customers are doing you a service if they complain about something valid. They have identified a problem that you have overlooked. Thus, the last statement can be made of the ideal customer.

“The ideal customer lets you know when you screwed up so you can fix the problem”

So, in conclusion, although it wasn’t as simple as it first seemed, three things can be said about the ideal customer. These attributes are not exclusive to customers of pharmaceutical companies and they can be generally large or small customers. First, you have to be able to find them and find out what they will buy. Second, they must learn that your product will fulfill their needs so they will develop an almost automatic response to buy your product. Finally, they will be customers that will let you know how you can better serve them. You don’t learn and grow if you don’t get some criticism. Do criticism of your product and the using it at the same time seem contradictory? I don’t think so. When I have gotten the correct response back from my complaints of a product or service, it only helped to reinforce my belief that the product was something of value to me. It was only when I got poor service that I learned it was generally not worth buying. So, it wasn’t so simple to describe the ideal customer as I first thought

In the novel Came back to show you I could fly both the main characters prove that facing challenges have/has many benefits for the individual/s. By facing challenges self esteem and confidence is boosted, and an end result of overall happiness and well being is achieved. However, it takes a lot to overcome fears and anxiety to achieve confidence and often heartache and pain comes before overall happiness.

Facing a challenge often results in a definite increase in self-esteem and a boost of confidence. In the book Came back to show you I could fly the eleven-year-old boy Seymour shows this continually. He makes friends with the wild Angie. Angie is a challenge to deal with. She insists they go out or do wild things often against the reserved Seymours better judgement. He has already been forbidden from going out and yet he goes, constantly worrying and fretting about rules and regulations. This however changes throughout the book, a different Seymour emerges a more fearless unafraid to stand up for himself Seymour. By facing the challenge of Angie and leaving the house Seymour gains confidence in himself.

Not only that but through the book as his friendship with Angie grows so does his self-esteem. Before, he could never make friends, now he has this wonderful person who wants to be his friend and listen to what he has to say. Therefore by taking up the challenge of working for a friendship with Angie he is given a friend who tells him he is interesting and who likes to be around him. His self esteem soars.

On the other hand, to actually disobey the rule of not leaving the house took a lot. Seymours anxiety and panic kicked in. His decision to leave the house was automatically regretted. Not only that he also had to face bullies, a scary alley way and an intimidating, yet nice, girl called Angie. It took a lot of bravery to face those challenges and it was an emotionally draining experience for Seymour. To gain confidence and self-esteem he had to deal with high stress, anxiety attacks, fear, worry and numerous other scary emotions.

Another aspect to consider is that facing challenges results in overall happiness and well-being. Seymour proves this by making friends with Angie and then becoming almost a totally different person, by facing a challenge he gained a friend for life.

Something he had yet to experience, he was overjoyed. Not only Seymour proved this though, Angie also proved this. By facing the challenge of staying clean from drugs and going to a rehab centre she had regained the ultimate love of her family, a healthier lifestyle and the feeling that she was free. No more stress over money for her next hit. She was staying clean. Her happiness at that was showed in a letter to Seymour in which she talks about the challenge and her now happiness that she is on the road to success. Both experience a feeling of overall happiness and well-being.

However, before they had overcome the challenges they were facing they encountered a lot of heartache and pain. To face a big challenge often involves coming

across heartache and pain. In Seymours case he faced heartache and pain after realising that his friend Angie was mixed up in drugs and that she often stole to gain things. He knew this were wrong and he repeatedly denied them. He couldnt deny them forever though and eventually he faced Angie. They had an argument both upset and angry. Angie went off to a rehab centre from where Seymour later gets a letter to clear things up. In between that time however life is hard. Seymour has never had friends and the one friend he worked so hard to get he just lost. Angie also experiences these feelings. She had to face the challenge of drugs. She needed drugs, and stole to get drugs. She stole from her own family to get drugs which resulted in losing her families trust and her place in that home. This cause friction and pain within her family and deep down in

Angie as well. She told them once that she would go to rehab but instead ran away as soon as she was there. In doing that she regained their trust then threw it back in their faces. She struggles to stay clean and get help, she tries to put her life back together. Eventually she goes to rehab permanently but along the way fights with her one friend, Seymour and loses her families trust and love.

In conclusion facing challenges provides boosted confidence and self esteem, and overall happiness and well being. However, facing challenges can also cause fear, anxiety, and stress. Also heartache and pain often occur whilst facing a challenge. Therefore there is sufficient evidence to prove that Facing challenges have/has many benefits for the individual.

Prohibition is the forbidding of alcohol by law. Organized efforts to limit the use of alcoholic beverages began in the United States during the 180’s. The misuse of alcohol was a problem throughout the country, including Kansas. Many religious people thought that drinking was morally wrong. Most of the people who wanted alcohol limited or banned were these types of people. People continued to have rallies and pass out pamphlets urging people to help try to ban alcohol. The first temperance legislation was passed in Massachusetts in 188. It was called the 15-gallon law. What this law did was prohibit the sale of alcohol in amounts of less than 15 gallons. This limited the sale of alcohol to the wealthy. In 1846 Maine passed the first state prohibition law. By the mid-1850s 1 states had laws similar to this, but by 186 all but Maine had repealed them. Two major temperance organizations were founded in the decade after the Civil War. The National Prohibition party was founded in 186 and the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in 1874. WTCU and the Kansas Temperance Union were of the organizations that resided in Kansas. These groups passed out pamphlets, led rallies, and gave lectures about the harmful effects of alcohol. Women led a major role in the prohibition movement, even though they couldn’t vote. Partly because of the efforts of these groups, Kansans tried to regulate saloons. These efforts failed, so they amended their constitution in 1880 to ban the sale of liquor. Kansas was the first state to go through with such an amendment. Prohibition failed to dry up the flow of liquor though. The most successful areas for prohibition were small towns and rural areas, where most people favored prohibition. In the larger cities and areas where most people opposed prohibition, the illegal sale of alcohol continued In Wichita, southeast Kansas, and German communities prohibition was totally ignored. By 180, six states had also adopted a Prohibition. The strongest force behind the movement for national prohibition wasn’t the Prohibition party, WCTU or other groups such as that but it was the Anti-Saloon League, which was founded in 18. Unlike the Prohibition party, it didn’t put up candidates for public office. Instead it worked for or against Democratic and Republican candidates, depending on their attitude about drinking. In 10, the whole nation became dry after Congress approved a constitutional amendment. The start of prohibition totally went against the lifestyles of many people, most of them whom lived in large urban communities. This caused other sources to develop. Millions of people made their own home brew of wine, beer, or the popular bathtub gin, which was made from raw alcohol, water, and flavorings. For those who didn’t want to make their own, there were plenty of other ways to get alcohol. Illegal saloons called speakeasies soon developed in every city. They obtained their liquor supplies from a newly emerging business called organized crime. The old ethnic gangs found a new enterprise in smuggling liquor in the United States. Bootlegging, the illegal manufacturing and selling of alcohol, became so profitable that a whole new criminal empire emerged from it. The most famous name in crime back then was Al Capone, but each city had its own underworld leader. The government could never arrest these people because they had bought off the judges and law enforcement officers. Before Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected, Congress adopted a joint resolution proposing the 1st Amendment. Upon its ratification in December 1, the 18th Amendment was repealed, and prohibition came to an end. Although the rest of the nation repealed prohibition, Kansas decide to remain dry. They stayed dry all the way until 148, when they once again legalized the sale of alcohol. Liquor sale was still prohibited except in package liquor stores and private clubs. This law still exists in Kansas to this day.

What would one define a citizen of the world? What would one have to demonstrate, provide and contribute to the world to receive this title? Maybe responsibility, respect from and toward others, or would they have to discover a new invention that could change peoples lives forever? Many people think that Benjamin Franklin would deserve this title. A true inventor, politician, philosopher, and poet. However, where there is good, there also is bad. Benjamin Franklin was also materialistic, a liar, and a poor father and husband. This is why Benjamin Franklin does not and should not be considered a citizen of the world.

First, in Poor Richards Almanack.there are many sayings that would fit under the title, The Way To Wealth, that would basically summarize Franklins materialistic views. One example would be, virtue to the end, is making yourself rich. Another example of this is one of his excerpts that state, There are three faithful friends, an old wife, an old dog, and ready money. Besides money, it seems that the only other object Franklin held a piece of his heart for was women. He was a notorious womanizer. He slept with women all over America and used them. He fathered more than thirteen illegitimate children. One of his excerpts states, If you ride a horse, sit close and tight, if you ride a man sit easy and light. This man truly believed that virtues are going to make one rich, and a player. Therefore, this reveals that Franklin was a very materialistic, shallow man.

Second, Benjamin Franklin was a liar. He clearly gave the people of America what hey wanted to hear. One wishes to feel safe, protected and loved. Then this is what good old Franklin

told them. He gave them simple excerpts to live by such as, God heals and the doctor takes the fees. To summarize, why waste money on a doctor when only the heavenly father has the power to heal? Also, in his Almanack, Franklin was always complaining how there is not enough money and how one is supposed to save money so the colony and America can become much wealthier, when the entire time Franklin was loaded with money but was too cheap to spend it on someone other than himself. Franklin complained and stated on how men should be more clean. Meaning they should be taking showers at least once a month, such as himself. However, where would they find the money for water? Or better yet, where did Mr. Franklin find the money for water, if he was poor as well? Also, when he wrote letters home to his wife he stated that everything was fine and she did not have to worry about him. Meanwhile, the entire time he was cheating on her. In his letters he lied to his own family, his wife, the one he married. Therefore, these points obviously reveal the true liar Benjamin Franklin was.

Lastly, Mr. Franklin was not a good family man. He had left his wife and sons at home, so he could live in London to represent Pennsylvania to the Imperial government. He lived in London and Paris for years without seeing his family. He would go home occasionally, however would leave again to reside in London or Paris. If not being home was not bad enough, Franklin slept with many women while away. He would constantly be cheating and having affairs. As well, his sons never had a father figure in their lives to look up to as a role model. They never had a man in the house,

Benjamin Franklin 4

the one male they needed to talk to, to learn right from wrong, and to learn to respect themselves and others. He was not even home at the time when his wife passed away. Benjamin Franklin was not a good family man. Not a husband nor a father.

In Conclusion, Benjamin Franklin was a shallow, materialistic man whose, virtues were money and women. He was a pathetic liar to the people of America and his wife, and was not a good family man. He had affairs and was not there to be a father to his children. If his own children cannot look up to him as a role model; How could anyone else? A citizen of the world should at least be there and be respected by the people who mean the most . . . his family. Benjamin Franklin will never deserve a title so strong as, citizen of the world. That would require maturity, which he never possessed.

Section 50 of the Telecommunications Act of 16, commonly known as the Communications Decency Act, detailed what could not be transmitted via the WWW to minors under the age of 18. The Communications Decency Act made it illegal to transmit or display obscene, lewd, and indecent materials to minors. However, the language in the act was so vague that many believed that the act would impact what adults could have access to on the Web. Many viewed the act as blatant censorship and therefore unconstitutional . Several Internet groups and businesses petitioned the courts to strike down the act as unconstitutional. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) challenged the act all the way to the Supreme Court. In June 17, the Supreme Court ruled that the act restricted adults access to information on the Web, which in turn amounted to censorship, and was therefore unconstitutional. The government, however, plans to re-draft legislation concerning what is and is not appropriate material for the Internet. Censorship of materials on the Internet is a violation of our constitutional right to freedom of the press because the First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.

Filtering programs created so that you can be at ease with your child surfing the net are at the same time outing sites whose content bears educational value and important issues that may enrich your child’s mind. In January 17, reporter Brock Meeks, publisher of the CyberWire Dispatch, wrote an article about a particular blocking program named CYBERsitter, and their decision to block the Peacefire web site because of a page on their site they wrote concerning the program, CYBERsitter Where Do We Not Want You To Go Today? Brian Milburn, CEO of CYBERsitter, sent Mr. Meeks a letter in response, the entire text of which read “Mr. Meeks,

You take yourself too seriously. You are but a trickle of piss in the river of life. You are a nobody, and we dont care about your opinion in the slightest.” Programs such as these have a narrowed point of view, and choose to see everything that isn’t ‘proper’ as an offense. This letter was absolute confirmation of the simple-mindedness imbedded in the people behind such filtering programs. In a section of Peacefire.org they outline an occurrence of Internet blockage, “Community United Against Violence is a 15 year old nonprofit agency preventing hate crimes against gays and lesbians. Their site includes links to pages about domestic violence, prevention of hate crimes, and youth activism. Their web site has been blocked by X-Stop and SmartFilter, although X-Stop unblocked the site in the fall of 17.” A site that educates the public in the area of hate crimes is hardly what I would call a reasonable justification to be blocked. The site should be treated with the same respect that any other hate crime prevention site receives. How may a child gain knowledge of other people’s ways of living if they are denied access by their computer?

Congress has gone against everything they stand for, even if that means flagrantly disregarding the rights implanted within the Constitution. The Internet Free Expression Alliance states on their website ,“Two new attempts to restrict free speech on the Internet have been introduced in the 106th Congress. Both of these bills would force schools and libraries that receive any federal funds to install filtering software on their computers. In the House, Rep. Franks (R-NJ) has introduced HR 68, the so-called Safe Schools Internet Act. This bill would require public elementary and secondary schools to install clumsy blocking software on all of their computer terminals with Internet access. It would also force public libraries to install blocking software on one or more computer terminals with Internet access. (1/8/)” Can it be possible that representatives of our founding fathers have the ability to restructure our rights as U.S. citizens? This country is run for the people, by the people. Why is it that a group of intransigent nitwits are the people responsible for the feelings and rights of the country? It should be our decision to make. And the free speech controversy doesn’t stop there. “The Senate Commerce Committee approved the Childrens Internet Protection Act (S.7) on June . The legislation would mandate that schools and libraries receiving E-Rate universal service funds purchase and use Internet filtering software to regulate access by minors. The House of Representatives added a similar provision to the juvenile justice bill on June 17. The Internet Free Expression Alliance sent a joint letter to the Senate committee urging rejection of mandatory filtering. (June 4, 1)” How might it be possible for a child to research a topic such as ‘Breast Cancer’ or Homosexual hate crimes fir their English class, if their schools blocking software recognizes it as lewd and innepropriate? The intention of the Internet is to educate and entertain, not to percolate and oppress. The government does nothing to terminate the use of these programs because all the inhabitants of the senate feel exactly the same way as the owners of these programs. Any efforts made by clubs and free speech organizations to take action on this problem are scuffled away by whoever is supposed to be running the “people’s country.”

Certain programs block sites because of keywords, not necessarily pertaining to content. This restricts sites that may be useful to education of students, or even adults. “While the Banned Books page and Femina.com are blocked because the URLs exist as entries on Net Nannys blocked site list, more Web sites are blocked because they contain keywords which activate Net Nannys word filter. TIME journalists reported in an August 17 article that Net Nanny blocked the National Organization for Women Web site (which was the source of much more controversy when the same Web site was blocked by CYBERsitter).” How do the creators of these programs vindicate this detail? In the case that an individual discovered she had breast cancer, she would not have the access to information concerning this topic. Sometimes this can go a bit further. “A Friends University professor also described being denied access to information the Episcopal Churchs position on homosexuality, at an unspecified Web site.” Keyword blocking has an obvious flaw. It obstructs sites that are in no way offensive, to anyone, because of postulated content. This form of blocking should be the first and foremost aspect to be consummated.

To conclude, because of Congress and filtering programs, the Internet will just conform to narrow-minded criteria that will turn the “Internet soapbox” into a vast wasteland of opinionless nothing. Sure, it’s completely reasonable to block porno and hate sites from the innocent eyes of our children, but it seems the blocking software companies have taken this a little too far. Our Constitutional rights are being invaded unjustly, and this ought to cease immediately. Perhaps the future will bring new hope for free speech on the Internet, but then again, we never know.

What are the Central Themes in “Othello”

I believe that racism, jealousy, deception and role of women are the most central themes in Othello, but I argue that the most important is racism. Throughout “Othello”, Othello the main body of the play is referred to as, “The moor”, “His Moorship”, “Thick lips” and, “Old black ram”. It is obvious that these remarks are down to his race and his appearance. The result of these insults is that Othello’s individuality is taken away from him and in certain cases he is reduced to a worthless animal.

These descriptions of Othello give us the audience an idea of darkness, violence, and in 1.1 Iago even uses a metaphor suggesting that Othello isn’t even human, “you’ll have your daughter covered with a Barbary horse, you’ll have your nephews neigh to you.” Iago is telling Brabantio that his daughter (Desdemona) has ran-away with Othello, that they are having sex and that his descendants are going to be the equivalent to mere animals. This shows that Iago thinks that mixing races is wrong which indicates he is racist.

We don’t get to see Othello in the first scene and so the audience only learns about Othello from a biased source. When the audience does actually see Othello in the next scene we learn that he is quite the opposite of how Iago has described him, “I love the gentle Desdemona” we can see that he is in fact a man of honor with a moderate temper and that he is a simple open man.

Race must have been quite an important issue to Shakespeare as he makes this, “Moor” this outsider (as described by some of the characters) the hero of the play. As the audience, we can see that with his unique openness and great warrior skills Othello isn’t actually that much of an outsider, but surely without his talents he would be. However Othello’s race sets him apart and makes him very self conscious. Because of this he works hard to try and sustain some reputation so that he can be regarded as equal to his surrounding whites. Because of the high-class system in Venice (where a lot of the play is set) it is possible for a black man to have power, but virtually impossible to have status. I think Othello does have a small amount of status and would do almost anything to try and cling on to it.

Othello does have direct power over the likes of Iago and Roderigo but in extreme circumstances Iago could take advantage of the fact that Othello would do anything to keep his reputation. That is exactly what we see.

This is where we see the theme of jealousy portrayed in Othello. The fact that a black man, an ex-slave has more power than the likes of Iago and Roderigo angers them, and they are jealous that such a man can have such a high position in the army, power over lots of white people and that he is married to the beautiful Desdemona who is of course white. Iago expresses most of his racial anger in the form of jealousy. To feed his jealousy he goes to extremes. In 1.1, Iago with the aid of Roderigo tells Brabantio (the father of Desdemona) that Othello has ran-away with his daughter and has used black magic to do so, “Or else the devil will make a grandsire of you” Iago deliberately uses the word “devil” because it is was black stereotype of the time. Most people believed that black people were strongly linked to the devil and hell. This was clearly a racist comment by Iago and it is evidence that his jealousy is racially motivated.

Iago likes to bring down the people who he is jealous of, “an old black ram is tupping your white ewe” He again uses Othello’s race to make others think very poorly of him and to get the complete wrong idea of him.

I believe that Jealousy is very closely linked to Racism and quite possibly even a branch off of Racism because the main reason why people like Iago and Roderigo are jealous of Othello in the first place is that he is black and very successful.

Deception is an important theme in the play and it is also strongly linked to racism. Iago is without doubt the key deceptionist in Othello. His deception is defiantly racially motivated as the only reason he wants to get at Othello is because he is jealous of him because he is black and successful. Iago openly admits to Roderigo that he is deceiving Othello, “I follow him to serve my turn upon him” Iago is telling Roderigo that he will follow Othello until he can find some way of getting revenge upon him. Othello hasn’t even done anything wrong to Iago, the fact that he is black and is doing well for himself seems to be enough. This again shows the links to racism. Iago is clever. He knows the position that Othello is in. He knows that because Othello is black and it is hard for him to maintain his place in society if one thing goes wrong for him, his reputation would be severely dented and the dent would grow being fed by public opinion. Iago takes advantage of this and fools Othello into thinking that Desdemona is having an affair with his loyal lieutenant Cassio. It gets to the point where Othello completely changes and in . he pledges an oath to seek a violent revenge on Desdemona. From here onwards, the tragedy of Othello becomes almost unavoidable.

In my opinion I think that if Othello was white he wouldn’t of had to worry about his place in society or his reputation. He would have probably been laughed at for some time but it would have soon passed over. But because he was black it meant more than that. He could have lost he place in society and his reputation for good and that is why he was so easily changed by Iago because he had his whole life at risk.

The other major theme in Othello is role of women. I think it has some links to racism but not as much as the other themes. All the main female characters in Othello are abused by the male characters.

Desdemona is mistreated right at the very beginning by her father Brabantio. Knowing that he wouldn’t give her permission to marry a black man, Desdemona does so in secret when Brabantio finds out he disowns her as when Othello is away on duty he doesn’t let he stay with him.

Desdemona can be very stubborn and stands up for what she believes in. Knowing that she was going to fend for Cassio (who wrongly lost his job). Iago takes advantage of her role and tells Othello that they are having an affair. When Desdemona protests to Othello, it is more believable to him. This is another of the ways that role of women links to racism.

Bianca is mistreated by Cassio. She is more of a trophy girlfriend than a real one. Cassio mistreats her from the start calling her a, “Bauble” just a simple pretty object. Cassio makes it public that he only uses her for sex and doesn’t really love her. This again helps Iago with his racially motivated attempt to make Othello think that his wife is having an affair as it seems more possible to Othello if Cassio isn’t loyal and loving to his own wife.

Iago uses Emilia. She is married to him and constantly tries to satisfy and impress him. Iago uses her to go and retreeve him Othello’s precious handkerchief, which was passed on to Desdemona. The hanky wasn’t just a piece of material. Othello had fought hard to gain it and so by giving it to Desdemona it was a symbol of his genuine love for her. After Emilia has got it for Iago, he plants it in Blanca’s room. Therefore making it look like Desdemona had given it to Cassio who passed it onto Bianca again convincing Othello of his wife’s guilt.

I feel that the role of women in Othello is that they are inferior to men. Iago takes advantage of this and uses them in his quest to convince Othello that his wife is having an affair. The reason Iago is doing this in the first place is because of the colour of Othello’s skin so role of women does have some link to racism.

In conclusion I Think that racism is the central theme in Othello because first of all Shakespeare makes the hero of the play an outsider. Because Othello was black he had to work extremely hard to gain his place in society. His place wasn’t secure so Othello would do almost anything to maintain his position. I think that if he was white he wouldn’t have faced such a harsh dilemma and the tragedy of the play could have been avoided.

I feel that other themes such as Jealousy and deception branch out of the central theme, which is racism. Iago is mainly only jealous because Othello is black and has more power than him. It is certainly racially motivated. Deception also branches off because it is the action of Iago’s racially motivated jealousy.

The role of women does link to racism but not as directly. Iago takes advantage of the inferior position of the females and uses them in different ways to convince Othello of Desdemona’s apparent affair with Cassio.

Instead, it was being utilized as a “back-up” system when the outbound representatives were not available. With regards to the unassigned accounts, the data clearly indicates that these accounts yield significant revenues for Hewlett-Packard. The research also showed that yearly sales data was collected via our internal sales tracking system (SASY). Additionally, the results of the study did indicate that the sales volume of the organization was declining slightly year over year.

While the design of your study is, at once, sound, it appears, nonetheless, to be incomplete. Consider the following points

• Why did this study focus only on the inside sales organization? There are many facets of Hewlett-Packard that may duplicate functions within the company. Are there other organizations within the company that are not achieving their revenue goals? This is an important variable that must be considered.

• Are there organizations that duplicate functionality that could possibly be merged? If so, HP would not have to include an entire organization in the work force reduction program; instead, only those positions which overlap would be eliminated. In this way, the integrity of each organization would be maintained, while at the same time HP would recognize cost savings.

• The field is the backbone of Hewlett-Packard Company. Without the field, we do not have the resources to sell our products and remain competitive. Researching the value add of organizations that do not directly contribute to HP’s revenue might be worth looking at. For instance, HP employs Business Administrative Managers to act as the liaison between the executive assistant and the manager that they support. These assistants could conceivably report directly to the manager they are assigned to. Researching the cost savings of eliminating the Administrative Managers would be another variable to consider.

Considering the points listed above would require a change in the sample design so as to include all organizations within each of the disciplines. It would, in turn, require a restructuring of the research design. Such changes would demand an examination of internal job functions. Customer surveys would not be required.

• Performance is a key aspect of any organization, and yet it was not considered in this study.

Overall performance studies of all disciplines should be considered. It is possible that the decline in revenues is a result of poor job performance of specific individuals as opposed to an inadequate aspect of the organization.

It is important to note that the initial survey instrument was not only appropriate, but valid given the variables assessed. The manner in which the original study was approached was logical. Utilizing face-to-face interviews, questionnaires and the internal revenue tracking system was the most viable means for collection of the necessary data. However, taking the points listed above into consideration would require changes in data collection methods.

In order to effectively analyze the data required when researching these new variables, alternate forms of collection are necessary. I would suggest the following data collection formats

• SASY would remain a viable data collection source. However, it would need to be expanded so as to include revenue information from all of the disciplines within HP. This would provide an analysis of the revenue power in terms of all internal contributors rather than focusing only on inside sales.

• To maintain the integrity of our organizations, exploring the functions of each sales representative is another variable that must be considered. This could be done by surveying the various job descriptions in order to discover any duplication of effort. For instance, our generalists focus on selling our entire portfolio of products. It would make sense, then, to look at the specialist sales representatives who only focus on selling one product.

• To properly evaluate company-wide performance levels, it would be necessary for individual managers to conduct employee evaluations. At the same time, managers would need to rank each employee, using the already established ranking scale. In this way, accurate information concerning overall performance could be compiled and analyzed. Organizations are affected by low performers. It is this variable that must be researched. Removal of low performance employees would achieve cost cutting goals, without requiring the elimination of an entire organization.

In conclusion, it is clear that while the original study indicated that a problem existed within Hewlett-Packard, it did not adequately address the issue. When conducting a study, it is important to consider all the variables, even though some may not be essential in the problem’s final solution. Far too many variables were excluded in this study. For this reason, not only does the study’s reliability come into question, but also the study’s validity.

While you were careful to use a reliable research design, as well as data collection instruments, your study is, nonetheless, incomplete. The conclusion that inside sales needed to be eliminated was an easy solution to a complex problem. That, in itself, is reason enough to give pause.

Conducting new research may, eventually, lead to the same conclusions concerning the inside sales organization. However, until all the variables are examined more inclusively; it is impossible to determine the overall validity of the conclusion drawn. There appear to be aspects of the equation that have not yet been figured in. I recommend, therefore, that a more extensive study be conducted before any further actions are taken concerning this issue.

Mr. Dish not decided whether to establish his business to a larger or stay in his existing area.

His new environment would be in an inner-city environment in the business sector. He must also have complete control of his environment. If it is in the inner-city where the business and persons he sold to, it would be a better move for him instead of having an organization out of the business sector.

Living in Town, where his main clients for his catering shop would be cost effective for him and because it could be cheaper and would not have to use capitol most of his capitol.

Some advice to Mr. Dish would be that he must offer better, prices, goods and quality to the consumer; otherwise competition could be lofty for him. Parking and transport must have easy access to the shop by many parking bays, maybe places to unload goods e.g. a garage or store rooms and there must be security, because safety is a number one concern.

Mr. Dish would need to use his own or borrow capitol & he must ask himself, if

How much money is needed and where can it be obtained.

Mr. Dish may need workers and to have suitable workers you need to have lower production costs, not a lot of preparation just basic training for the workers, He must try to increase productivity with workers as well.

Having adequate power and water is an important basis. Some may use either a lot or much less water and power as for Mr. Dish it may be more costly, Power would be needed for his Bakery business and water for his supplies and human consumption.

Climate and weather changes would not matter for Mr. Dish; in the business sector a cooler climate helps productivity in worker. But doesn’t cause many problems.

If he was in a centralized industrial area there would be more crime, riots, hard to find employment but if it is in a quiet working are there would be less chance of crime, lower rent and resources would be cheaper.

Dulce Et decorum Est

The first poem I chose to compare is Dulce Et Decorum Est which is written by Wilfred Owen. It is 8 lines long and has an obvious rhyming scheme (every other line rhymes) Owen gives us a detailed picture of the war by the way he talks in the first person. The poem was written during First World War and shows the problems faced by many of the young and hard fighting men during this dark time in history. The main point Wilfred Owen tries to convey in this poem is the sheer horror of war. Owen uses many techniques to show his feelings.

Wifred Owen was a soldier on the Western front who fought through the war from 114 until 118 when he died a week before the war ended. This shows that he had great knowledge of war and this is shown in the poem. In his poems he blame the old British way of dying for your country in honor for the damage done by the First World War to a generation lost.

In the opening stanza you get a very different image of the soldiers from what you might expect from the title. One thinks of soldiers as smart, proud, marching, and fighting, but Owen’s picture is based on his personal experience of the battlefield. The soldiers are completely demoralised and have no proud ness or dignity in the way they move. ‘Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge’

Owen presents the reader with details of imagery which creates a picture of the harshness men went through compared to the glory of what it should have been Wilfred Owen increases the effect of the interpretation of the soldiers by repeating himself. ‘Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots but limped on, blood-shod .All went lame; all blind; drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind ’(The last line in that quote shows that a division in the upcoming attack has dropped behind and fallen out of rank.)

The second stanza is very active and frantic in comparison. The first stanza shows the unbearable boredom and misery of the battle. However at the start of the second stanza Owen creates an environment common to the war where the men could suddenly be slaughtered instantly. ‘GAS! Gas! Quick, boys! -- An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; but someone still was yelling out and stumbling and floundering a man in fire or lime.’

However even a scene where chocking to death is created the author is reassured by the safety of the men by the fitting of the soldiers gas masks. This feeling of being reassured quickly goes with one man dying of the deadly gas. This is not a glorious death. By using imagery Owen gives the reader the feelings of horror and disgust that he wants them to feel at the sight of the sight of the soldier poisoned by gas

‘In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.’ This not only shows how the soldier is suffering, but that he is in terrible pain. Owen shows the pain by the soldier’s life flickering away.

In Owen’s third stanza death in dying for ones country is presented as the opposite of the stereotypical gloriousness that is known at the time. ‘…The white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devils sick of sin’

During this part of the poem Wilfred uses mass imagery as possible to create and image of blood and gore ‘The blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues’.

During this man’s death Owen tries to make it feel is as if you are reliving his torture. He also uses other metaphoric tools to describe the injuries inflicted on the man such as the invisibleness of cancer and the pain and sight of vile.

Wilfred ends his poem by displaying his opinion the view on war by rejecting the feeling of glory at the time by stating bluntly that; war is a waste and a massacre of human life.
