Some of the differences between the reservation lands and their homeland would be that they were adapted and made for their homeland, so moving to the reservation caused a great strain on them all. Since the environmental conditions were very different, and lacked the necessities that they lived on, such as flowing rivers and grazing area for their stock. Another difference was the way they lived. In their homeland they were free to go and do as they pleased while still keeping respect for the land, but in the reservations they were told they were not allowed to go anywhere outside of these reservations, even if they would treat things as they did in their homeland.

The “good words” that were spoken to him have yet to restore a homeland and respect to his himself and his people. The “chiefs” all said they were his friend and what was happening was wrong, but none would do anything more for them but talk. And they all told him different things, so he was confused on whom to believe and go with.

The only rights he asks for his people is that they are given the same chance in life as the white men have been given. Since they are now living together, they would like to live in peace under the same conditions, good or bad. Mainly so that they can salvage what they have left and build along side the white man to help one another evolve to a greater being. I chose to write compare my experiences to Douglass not that I went through any similar situation to him, but that I went through similar thought processes. For example he was naive to the meanings of the “slave songs” that were being sung around him when he was small. And it took him years to even begin to grasp and appreciate their meanings. As did I with various things that life has put on my plate. Simple things such as homework rules when I was small; my mom used to make me finish all my homework before I could go outside and play and of course I never wanted to do so, but I did it and didn’t really question why I had to, but at the same time never understood why she made me do that. About six years later after she no longer feels the need to tell me to sit down and do my homework I see myself slipping and finding my grades and such dropping, now I see that you can have both work and play but work must come first so that you can enjoy your free time without worry about what you still have to do or that you’ve been putting something off for so long, when you’re just adding to your problem by delaying it. The basics of this experience were just that it often takes time for things to sink in and for you to understand their true meaning, and often when it finally does sink in, it might be too late to actually go back and fix things or even salvage what you’ve done or haven’t done in my case.

Japan

Japan is the country I’ve been dreaming of to visit. The things that attract me are there culture is very different and there are lots of things for me experience. What kind of cultural interest is Japan? The Japanese language will be a useful tool for the United States people. What is Japans attitude towards the United States? Why would Japan be important to us in the future? What kind of government is Japan? How is Japan education different from the States? What is Japan place is the History? What kind of Jobs they have in Japan? What is there to do for fun at day or night? What are the types of food they have at Japan? How is the weather like in Japan?

The two type of religion is Japan is Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto is and ancient native religion of Japan. Japanese people still practice in a form of modified by the influence of Buddhism and Confucianism. The term Shinto, is a term that is created to distinguish the indigenous relation from Buddhism, the same as the Japanese kami-no-michi, “the way of the gods” or “the way of those above.” Kami means “above” or “superior,” this is the name used to designate a great host of supernatural beings or deities. Buddhism is a religion and philosophy founded in India in c.55 B.C. by Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha. There are 00 million Buddhists world wide. This is one of the world great religions; it is divided into two main schools the Theravada or Hinyana in Sri Lanka and South-East Asia, and the Mahayana in China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan. The third school, is the Vajrayana, has a long tradition in Tibet and Japan. Buddhism has largely disappeared from its country of origin, India, except the many refugees from the Tibet region of China and small number converts from the lower castes of Hinduism. But there are a small amount of people who are Christians.

The Japanese language is known around the United States, but would it be a useful tool if we (United States citizens) know it? Yes, it would a great tool for us to know this language. Japan we do lots of business with, and in order for us to do business we need to know how to communicate to them. If you are to travel there how are you suppose to tell them how you want your food? This language is mostly usage for business; we do lots of trading with Japan. Knowing Japanese is a great tool for us to know.

Japan’s current attitude towards the United States is that they like the United States. When President Bush came in as president, he talked to Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and the new president and between Foreign Minister Yohei Kono and Secretary of State Colin Powell; in the view of Japan alliance should it strengthen with the United States. Minister Kono later came and visited the United States to talk with Colin Powell. They built up a good personal relationship, talking about views on bilateral relations, and foreign situations, and effort in regard to global issues. On February 10, Japan’s time, a U.S. nuclear powered submarine collided into a fisheries training vessel. Japan was angered at the U.S. for that mistake and U.S. apologized. From that day on they are trying to strengthen there trading, ideas, and relations.

Japan with their knowledge in technology, and resources, they are very important to the U.S. Japan technology is very futuristic; with the U.S. knowledge and Japan we would be able to make some crazy technologies. Japan they like everything neat and clean, like there technology. Japan recourses are fishes, rice, sugar beets, vegetable, fruits, pork, poultry, dairy products, eggs. Japan is the world’s largest and technologically advanced producers of mother vehicles, electronics equipment, machine tools, steel and nonferrous metals, ships, chemicals, textiles, processed foods. This would be a great help with the trading business with Japan.

Japan is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government. Japan government is based on a constitutional of 147. It was drafted by the Allied occupation authorities, and it was approved by the Japanese diet. The emperor is the “symbol of the state” but sovereignty rest with the people. Hirohito was the emperor from 16 till he died in 18; he was then succeeded by his son, Akihito. The diet has sole legislative power. It is composed of the House of Representatives, with 500 members elected for a four year term, with 00 representatives chosen by single-seat constituencies and the rest proportionally; and the house of councilors, with 5 members with a six year term. With 18 members with executive power and headed by the prim minister, who is elected by the diet and is usually the leader of the majority part of that body. Japan is divided into 47 prefectures; each of them is governed by a popularly elected governor and unicameral legislature. The cities, towns, and villages, elect there own mayors and assemblies.

Education is a big deal in the Japanese culture. The Japanese parents are very strict about getting good grades. The parents are always pressuring you to do well, so you would be able to have a high paying job. School usually starts in the morning till night (8am-6pm). The students would always have to take off their shoes and a sign of respect of the building. The teachers are strict to the students, for that they are trying to help the student to grown up strong, and be disciplined. Japanese student don’t really have time to watch T.V. They are mostly studying; they probably spend 6 hours a week watching T.V. After school they would attend there after school activities like sports, or maybe an even a study group. Going to school is a very big deal for the Japanese.

On December 7, 141 Japan had attack Pearl Harbor. A report indicated that 400 people we killed and 100 we wounded. For that reason the U.S. had entered World War II. The reason why Japanese attack Pearl Harbor was that the U.S. Navy ships were positioned at. They were trying to paralyze from helping in the war. All they did was anger the U.S. The U.S. has a reason to join the war now. On August 6, 145 the atomic bomb was dropped on the City of Hiroshima. The Enola Gay was the plane Colonel Tibbetts used to do this mission. After the dropping the bomb the U.S. had this war in its hand.

The kinds of job positions they have at Japan is similar to here in the U.S. There are lots of fisher men in Japan, since they have lots of fish resources. Since there is lots of sushi bars there are chief who are needed. There is fast food over there so they would need workers to get the customers there food. There are lots of white collar jobs. There are all kinds of business in Japan, for Car Company, T.V. Company, etc. There is lots of opportunity in Japan for jobs, as long as you have the requirements you are hired. Japan unemployment rate is 4.%, compared to U.S 5% (00).

Japan has lots of things to do during the day and night. During the day there are parks and amusement parks you can go to. There are lots malls and stores you can go to. There are Japanese gardens you can go check out, and looking the beautiful scenery. There is a Disney land at Japan that you can take your family and have some fun. The teens they would go out and hang out at arcades. At night is mostly for the older people. You can go to bars, clubs, strip clubs, etc. There are lots of people out at night walking around, checking out the scenes. There is lot of things to do, so you will always have plans if you do go out at night.

Japanese people mostly like to each sushi. Rice is what they eat with everything. Eating fish cook or raw they like to eat fish. They also have traditional dishes. Noodles with what ever you want in there. Oyakodon is one of their popular dishes, it comes with salmon eggs, chicken, and eggs. Tempura is another good dish; deep fried battered fish, shrimps, or vegetables. They also have fast food, the popular one is McDonalds. But out of all of this they mostly like to eat fish.

Japan area are mostly temperate and with for season, other then Hokkaido area and the subtropical Okinawa region. The winters are cool and sunny in the south, it is cold and sunny around Tokyo it sometime snow. It is very cold around Hokkaido; it is covered in snow for up to four months a year. Between June and September, it ranges from warm to very hot. In spring and autumn it’s generally mild throughout the country. Rain falls throughout the year but June and early July is the main rainy season. Hokkaido is much drier than the Tokyo area. Typhoons are likely to occur in September or October but rarely last more than a day.

Japan is a great country that I would love to live there someday. There are lots of great places I can check out and learn from. There are lots of activities I can enjoy during the day and night. The food at Japan looks good, and sound very good. Everything over there is an adventure.

Does the word abortion mean murder, or a way out? A tremendous amount or our society believe one way or the other. I decided to take it upon myself to research the topic to see the arguments to both sides of the story.

First of all there are several ways to perform an abortion. The most common two ways are induced abortion and menstrual extraction. Induced abortion is the use of drugs or instruments to stop the normal course of a pregnancy. Menstrual extraction is a technique, which is also called eudiometrical or vacuum aspiration. It is used for most abortions done in the first trimester. It is done by suctioning out the lining of the uterus through a thin and often flexible tube inserted through the opening of an undialated cervix.

Some people in our society believe that the word abortion is simply a medical term used for murder. They feel this way because they feel that a person(s) is taking a human life and committing murder as a way of mere convenience. The fetus is alive from the very beginning of conception whether it be classified as a human being or not, it is still LIFE. These people also believe it should be punishable by law. They feel that it is the same as if one were to murder their fellow classmate. The precious, innocent life has been taken away without choice in both situations.

Doctors may say it is to improve the mother’s medical conditions or to save her life; however it is quoted it the Encyclopedia Americana, that most women can be brought safely through a pregnancy with serious medical problems without performing an abortion. With this in mind why are so many abortions attributed to saving a mother’s life.

Looking at it from a religious aspect here are several quotations from the Bible

“When men strive together and hurt a woman with a child, so that this is miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined, according as the woman’s husband shall lay upon him…if any harm follows then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand…”(Exodus 1-5)

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” ( Jeremiah 14-5)

“Your own hands shaped me, molded me.” ( Job 108)

“For thou didst form my inward parts-Thou didst knit me together in my mother’s womb.” ( Psalm 11)

These passages are all expressions of the truth that God is the Creator and the Source of all creative processes. They should instill in us a reverence toward all life, unborn as well as born.

In contrast we have the people who believe that a fetus is not a living thing, much less a living being. They feel that aborting a fetus is not an immorality or even murder. They also feel that a fetus does not become a human being until the baby is born and draws its first breath. These people also believe that the body belongs to the mother so she can do with it as she wishes.

As already mentioned the will also claim from time to time that the abortion is a necessity as to save the mother’s life or save some medical complications. They also feel in cases of rape the child has no right to use the mother’s body therefore it is not unjustly killing the unborn fetus.

Many if not most of us, are disturbed by this issue and by the number of abortions. Maybe we can help people make wiser, more educated choices. The Bible does not prohibit abortion, but it always encourages a respect for life. Left with this uncertainty, believers have through the years taken very different positions. But life being what it is, abortion decisions will always have to be made - at least until further technology comes along that may preclude it. Since there is no moral consensus or biblical mandate, we should accord women the legal, moral, and religious freedom to choose. And since abortion is a serious moral crisis, we should be around to guide her beforehand and to support and love her through whatever decision she under God, makes. May God have grace and understanding for women or politicians who must make such serious decisions.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Write my Essay on TQM Implementation In Small Industry in Malaysia for me

essay writing service

TQM is a philosophy mainly dominated by large companies. Small businesses are lagging behind larger ones when it comes to introducing and adopting new managerial philosophies and advanced technology. Many small companies have stopped at quality system certification, such as ISO 000, in their quality journey rather than pursuing further continuous improvement efforts through TQM. Small businesses must understand the need to go beyond the quality system stage and work towards a total approach for quality. Only through this total approach will their quality effort be a success.

.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Do Raya Plastik Industri Sdn. Bhd (RPI) really have fail to totally implement Total Quality Management (TQM) . What is the issue

.0 OBJECTIVE

The objective of this paper

a. Why Raya Plastik Industri want to implement Total Quality Management ? Explaination why RPI want to implement TQM

b. RPI performance in terms of sales against manpower before and after implementing TQM.

c. The TQM element that RPI fail to follow. As TQM have so many element, which area thet RPI fail to follow.

d. To give recommedation to the management.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

For this paper the group have decided to use the following method

a. Primary Data

This will be through Interview with the top management and the executive.

b. Secondary Data

1.The TQM report that the company have every quarterly each year.

.The TQM Handbooks

.Journal, Academics books etc.

5.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

Different authors have given various definitions of TQM. Kanji (10) defined it as the way of life of an organisation committed to customer satisfaction through continuous improvement. This way of life varies from organisation to organisation and from one country to another but has certain principles which can be implemented to secure market share, increase profits and reduce costs.

Berry (11) defined the TQM process as a total corporate focus on meeting and exceeding customers expectations and significantly reducing costs resulting from poor quality by adopting a new management system and corporate culture. The principles of TQM have been described by many authors and encompass elements such as management leadership and commitment, employee involvement, supplier partnership, continuous improvement, etc. It is a way of managing an enterprise towards achieving business excellence (Dahlgaard et al., 18).

Early studies on quality initiatives in small businesses have largely focused on achieving product quality and on the application of statistical techniques. Dale and Duncalf (184) studied the quality assurance aspects of small manufacturing companies (less than 100 employees) and reported that they were less likely to have a coherent quality assurance policy, and a quality department than large companies. Very few had progressed from an inspection oriented function to the more advanced quality assurance concept. Nagpal and Twamley (18) reported on a case study of SPC implementation in a small plastics manufacturer as a way of initiating a quality improvement culture. They described the process from initial training to the application of control charts on the shop floor. Both these studies have related quality to product quality assurance and the statistical techniques aspects of TQM.

The idea of having a common standard, as proof of an organisations product assurance system to its customers is noble, but should not be seen as an end in itself. A company certified to the standard only has a documented product quality assurance system that complies to the prescribed requirements. Seddon (17) argued that it lacks the continuous improvement element vital for quality sustenance.

TQM in the small business

Studies of TQM implementation in smaller businesses are relatively scarce. There seems to be greater interest in the application of TQM in larger organisations, probably because they are seen as being more important than smaller ones. Much of the current published work is centred around the approaches that small companies have taken in their pursuit of TQM. Some of the literature relates to survey results regarding the motive for TQM implementation, measures adopted and the outcome of TQM implementation based on managers perceptions. A review conducted by Yusof and Aspinwall (000a) revealed that those previously developed implementation frameworks were far from suitable and did not fit the SMEs context.

Moreno-Luzon (1) concluded that small firms were lagging behind big ones in the application of TQM. Successful small firms were found to place more emphasis on product and process innovation, investing in new production equipment, and to have a highly motivated management team with better managing skills. They tended to have less qualified personnel than larger ones, and through TQM, were able to invest in the training of their staff which led to this improvement.

Ghobadian and Gallear (16) reported on the case studies of four SMEs where they investigated the reasons for adopting TQM, the main steps involved in implementation, the impact and changes resulting from its adoption and the difficulties in implementation. They concluded that SMEs could apply TQM with considerable success and they pointed out the strengths inherent in SMEs which were beneficial for this.

Goh and Ridgway (14) found that most of the companies, which they surveyed, viewed certification to ISO 000 to be the end point in their quality drive. Similar findings were also reported by Zetie et al. (14) and Meegan and Taylor (17). Goh and Ridgway (14) also advocated the need for a cost-effective framework to implement TQM in SMEs, but they did not expand on their idea. Zetie et al. (14) reported on a case study of a small companys experience in implementing TQM. They utilised an improvement infrastructure that was very similar to the quality circles concept and gave examples of the kinds of projects conducted.

Reasons for adopting TQM

Small firms have embarked on TQM for different reasons. Shea and Gobeli (15) cited some of the motives reported by a group of small companies which they studied. They were

1. promotion of growth - it is easier to convince the companys bankers to invest in them if there is evidence that the organisation is well run;

. management belief in the principle of customer satisfaction and employee empowerment which reflects the management style supporting TQM;

. changing customer expectations even for organisations seen to be doing well (competitive issue);

4. making work more enjoyable; and

5 to improve poor company performance if the company is not doing well (survival issue).

Even though these reasons looked varied, they all point in the same direction to improvement. Increasing profits is an important issue especially for small businesses. They must understand and realise that improvements in their business and in other aspects such as the working environment are important for survival. Brown (1) reported on a case study in a small company whose reason for adopting TQM was to develop a new culture as well as managements desire to return the company to profitability. One of the companies studied by Ghobadian and Gallear (16) cited trying to overcome internal problems such as poor delivery performance, quality related problems caused by a narrow functional approach and poor financial returns as the prime reasons for adopting TQM.

4. The consultation is free fully sponsored by the NPC (National Productivity Corporation) and JSA (Japan Standard Association)

5. Based for achieving ISO0014

The project started in 16 until 1 according to the financial year of the company. During the project, the JSA will send their consultant to the the model company twice a year. As guideline, there are 1 set of TQM handbook will be given to the model company for their reference. The consultant will give at least to set of the TQM handbook during each visit.

Refer to Appendix 1 for the list of the handbook and the area of application.

7. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF TQM

At the early stage, RPI was very excited about the program. At the same time RPI also preparing for the ISO0014 certification. This project concurrently done and in early 18, RPI get certified for ISO0014.

There are major activities to implement TQM in RPI

1. SETTING TQM POLICY DEPLOYMENT

To ensure thet the TQM being implenmented the management have set the target the mission statement, objective and all departmental goal and objectives. From there the deparment will have to list out all the policy deployment for each of the department until the section concern. They use the Plan do, check and action or they called it PDCA. To achieve the target set, all head of department will have to list out all the plan and in order to do that they have to know the current situation. Then they will do what they plan and check whether what they do is accordance to the target set. If there is something wrong with the implementation they have to take action or countermeasure. If the target set achieved they have to craete a benchmark or standard so that they can monitor their progress. In order to ensure that the management can control this process, they have set that every month , there will be a TQM Meeting. In this meeting all the Head of Department have to present their report to the management. This is also the time where the Kaizen (continous improvement) activities will be reported.

Refer to the Appendix for the sample of the format for the TQM project.

. DEVELOPING STANDARDIZATION

RPI then try to develop standadization system whereby all the work process, rule and regulation in the company being standardize. This standadization will help employer and employee to follow same work processs, rule and regulation. This standardization have cause a big changes in the company and during the process there are a lot of ressisstance from the staff especially the executive level. One of the example of the standardization is the standard operating prosedure or work instruction.

Refer to the Appendix for example of work instruction.

. DEVELOPING THE QCC AND 5S GROUP.

They start with setting the committee for the project and they set the goals and objective for the company. The campaign for 5s and the Quality Control Circle being scheduled and being conducted accordingly. The project really bring changes to the company. For the QCC group, the company sent them for training and for competition.

7. PROBLEM WITH TQM IN RPI

From the data gathered the average age in the executive level in RPI is not balance. The average age for the manager and executive will be 5 years old. The actual situation is that the person who incharge of the TQM in RPI change. The previous employee left and the new person incharge have different view and perspective compare to the one that left. This new person incharge have a very high expectation in implementing TQM. At this stage there so many chnages been done. The structure of the organization change and there are employee especially the executive level resigned and the new executive find that this TQM thing alien to them. The ressisstance to this new changes disturbed the implimentation of TQM. This was the time when all the QCC group and 5s implementation was done at all. Most of the executive dissapointed when all their efforts were not been recoznized by the management. This person incharge have a great influence in the company.

Nevertheless with all the obstacles in the implementation of TQM, RPI manage to get their certification for QS 000 intergrated with the ISO 00000.

Refer to the Appendix 4 for the company performance according to the sales against manpower.

From a few interview done with the senior manager, in their opinion RPI can do better than what been done. They said that the problem in implementing TQM in RPI basically because of

1. Resistance to change;

The staff reluctant to change because they do not what is for them.

. Lack of experience in quality management;

The person in-charge to dependent on his theories, he seldom want to give other people the chance to use their experience.

. Lack of resources especially financial;

Currently all improvement to be done need resources especially finacially but currently budget is tight.

4. The prevalent quality system based on detection (i.e. difficulty in moving to a prevention-based system);

5. An emphasis on short-term objectives;

6. Put a very high expectation

When people ids adapting to new thing there will some learning curve that they have to go through, but in this case the good result needed right away. This make the staff dimotivated.

7. Top management do not take responsibility if anything goes wrong- pointing finger to everybody

When there are project that fail the management do not want to take the resposibility, for example fail to maintain QCC group burden been put to certain division without considering the reason behind it.

8. Like to interupt other people project or even daily management

The staff idea seldom been considered and when the staff did not follow their for some other reason , they been labeled not performing.

8.0 CONCLUSION

The review revealed that there are several major problems generally faced by most small businesses. The most important thing is financial and the second is a more general resource constraint, which in a broad sense includes time, manpower, technical expertise and managerial expertise. A full-blown TQM approach will involve many improvement projects running concurrently, which in turn requires training of everyone in TQM concepts, tools, supervision, and teambuilding to name but a few. All these require a considerable investment.

In RPI case, they are not totally fail in implementing TQM is just that the need to improve a few thing like the enforcement, the top management must play important role and give some space for their subordinate to work rather that interupt it all the time. Since the company implement TQM there must be some improvement in the company they must change their culture of working.

.0 RECOMMENDATION

Actually RPI have a lot ofroom for improvement to do in order for them to be perfectly succes in implementing TQM. Some of the thing is as below

1. high management commitment level;

. tangible improvement projects;

. continuous improvement strategy; and

4. not being complacent at one level

The need to get people involved early in the process and to empower the operatives to make them part of the process. Another piece of advice given, was to give the workers the direction of the way forward, to make them understand the improvement process and the benefits to be gained. Make them feel early in the journey/process that good things are going to happen. Involvement is not enough, but the need to gain peoples support is crucial for success.

John Steinbeck was an American novelist and short-story writer of the early

100’s. His works were intriguing and very different for his time, making

room for criticism and ignorance. This essay will provide insights into

whether the works of Steinbeck can be classified as literature, including the

essay writing service

definition of Literature and my opinions and thoughts as a literature reader

and student. It will also look into criticisms, comparisons, feminism and a

bit about the theme and underlying story, written within Steinbecks 1

novel Cannery Row.

The question of ‘what is literature’ is one that will never able to be

responded to with a definite answer. There are still huge steps being taken

and new ones being put into place. The possibilities of literature are

endless, with each new technological find it advances. Thus it is very

difficult to pin down exactly what it is that ensures text fits into the category

of literature. In classifying works by John Steinbeck as literature in this way

I am defining a work of literature as containing a message on the nature of

humanity. Works of literature are works that comment on the human

experience, yet there are other factors that also contribute to the

classification of a text.

Literature may be classified to a variety of systems, including language,

national origin, historical period, genre, and subject matter. Works of

literature also act as cultural resources, speaking of the era and society out

of which they were created.

The worth of a text can be judged by its ability to capture the period of its

creation. A work if literature can also be seen to be one that acts as

symbolic resource. The relationship between it and the reader. Different

readers have different reactions to a text. Thus, different people and

groups of people value different texts for different reasons. One may refute

what might be highly valued by another.

The name is often applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose

distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the excellence of their

achievement. Sometimes referred to as ‘artistic licence’ by it’s author.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary says it is “ Writings whose value lies in the

beauty of form or emotional effect.” The 1th century critic Walter Pater

referred to “the matter of imaginative or artistic literature” as a “transcript,

not of mere fact in its infinitely varied forms.”

“The art of literature is not reducible to the words on the page, they are

there because of the craft of writing.” As an art, literature is the

organisation of words to give pleasure, through them it elevates and

transforms experiences, through them it functions in society as a continuing

symbolic criticism of values.

Though many would disagree, I do, mostly, classify John Steinbecks work as

literature. Many literary experts either ignore his work or write criticisms

exposing the defects of it.

Even though there were many things that could have been changed,

improved about his work, it was something unformal, more casual than

other stories of around that era. Making his books stand out having a new

age flare, which was obviously not a welcomed accomplishment at that

point in time.

Cannery Row brings together again, in the unchanging world of

literature(art), those qualities of life, rushed by the war, had passed never to

return, and for which Steinbeck is said to have felt a deep sentiment. In

this respect, the novel is firmly in the country life tradition.

The language used in Steinbecks work is simple and maybe his biggest

contribution as a writer, could turn out to be the exploration and

colonisation of the no-mans-land between intellectuals, non-intellectuals,

rational and the subrational. Critics also did not think he deserved the 16

Nobel Laureate in Literature. Which he won for his realistic and imaginative

writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social

perception.

Some critics even said that his work is only worth reading by

‘un-sophisticated readers’ or for ‘introductory courses in Literature’ to

prepare students to read more complex and mature works. But, how can it

possibly be unworthy of reading when millions read his work every year?

Movies and plays have even been made of his more famous books.

The central theme of most of Steinbeck’s work is the endless struggle of

people who depend for their livelihood upon the soil to sustain themselves.

He saw what others overlooked, dignity in the poor and the oppressed.

Although his characters were often trapped in a naturalistic world of unfair

social and economic forces, they are sympathetic and heroic human beings.

The story is told from an omniscient point of view. Steinbeck has managed

to not only capture one persons thoughts, but many leaving the reader all

knowing about the characters no matter which end of society they are at.

The book that was read by the year eleven English literature class was

Cannery Row, which I personally thought was a bit under our usual

standards, but was a good book for us to realise this and our potential. I felt

Cannery Row offers neither a detailed anatomy of society’s “mangled

craziness” nor a program for changing it. Rather, it brings into being a new

world to replace the one that is in the process of self destruction. I could

even classify it as just the introduction to another story. Something in

which not alot of readers enjoy.

The lingering effect of timelessness, achieved in part by the lack of

movement and the recurrence of specific descriptions and acts is also

something that may irritate some readers.

Steinbeck discovers that what normally might be called “thieves, rascals,

bums” may just as truly be described as “saints, angels, martyrs and holy

men.”(11) As for Doc, the central character, express it, the traits leading

to success in our society are frequently “greed, selfishness, meanness,”

whereas failure may be the result of “kindness, generosity, openness,

honesty, understanding and feeling.” Which in my opinion is very true.

Many readers do not realise messages writers are trying to get across, the

story beneath the story. One with a greater significance and meaning. The

obvious theme in Cannery Row, is one of Mac and the boys and their simple

saintly lives. The underlying theme consists of Doc and his realisation of, in

a way, two ‘sub-worlds’ of Cannery Row and the tide pool.

Steinbeck seems to have represented Doc to make a comparison between

our civilised lives to a miniature universe in the natural world of the pool.

Imitating the life and struggle there. Helping to represent Steinbecks

underlying theme, is a quote from the Bible, “Our Father who art in

Heaven”, only, he has manipulated it to fit in with his story, “Our Father who

art in Nature.”

In Greek plays, there always seems to be a god, who secretly resides among

ordinary mortals. Well, in Cannery Row, this Greek play has some what been

repeated, only a modernised version with the God-like figure being Doc. He

is someone who comes from the upper side of society, un-natural

side-cultured, noble, educated. For this reason the ordinary people seem to

in a way worship him, in return for his helpfulness and kindness. But in

reality, Doc is in search of truths, of his own God if you like?

In terms of feminism, Cannery Row is a typical male written novel. Not once

in the story does Steinbeck portray women and men as equals. Although,

this was very typical of novels based around this era. Women do not play a

significant part in Cannery Row, they are more like shadows or playing

supporting roles rather than actual characters. The images of women in this

novel also are few and far apart. Dora Flood, the Bear Flag Restaurant owner

is portrayed as the wise old woman. Someone who is like the Row’s social

glue. No-one really likes her but because of the contributions she makes to

society, she seems to be respected. Also Dora’s profession is undermining

to women, making out that exploiting women is a good thing would be

unheard of now-a-days.

In comparison to Shakespear, Steinbeck was not as advanced and

knowledgable towards the actual events that were taking place around him,

who people really were. He only gave the idealistic view to his readers.

Unlike Shakespear who was able to not only give the point of view from a

male perspective but compose women not only as an object but as their

own person, with their own feelings, thoughts and emotions, which amounts

to the complex creature that is woman.

In conclusion, this essay has discussed a few different aspects of the novel

Cannery Row and John Steinbeck as a writer. Exploring the definition of

Literature and my opinions and thoughts as a literature reader and student.

It also mentioned criticisms towards Steinbeck, comparisons, and

underlying theme of Cannery Row.

Students should have a part-time job while attending high school. There are many reasons why this is true. You learn new abilities on finances, responsibility, compatibility with others, and to simply earn money for future use. Getting a career early on in your life also helps you decide what you want to become later on in your life. Students will mostly just get a job for the money, but it also is a very good learning experience.

The majority of students coming out of high school will either go to college or university. The average tuition fee in Canada, for 00/04 will be at a high of 405 dollars. Some parents can not afford this, let alone some students. If students acquire jobs while they are attending high school they can find themselves more financially secure when they get older. Saving your money will also help you with your ability to understand finances. As you increase the net worth of your savings you will realize you have more opportunities to go to even better school, which leads to an even better career. Also, as your income increases, you won’t have to rely so much on your parents to support your college/university funds.

The work world will also provide you with an ability to recognize authority. By learning the many types of managements that are there you will come to understand that if you act inappropriately there will be less of a chance to make up for your mistakes. As related to school, you do something wrong, you will have more of a leeway to learn from your actions. For example speaking harshly to a teacher may get you sent home, more homework, extra time after school or some other form of punishment, but you will probably be back in the school later on and will have learned from your mistakes. If you speak harshly to an authoritative superior at your workplace you will be simply fired, and no coming back. Through this you will also learn to deal with many people. You may like them, you may not, but they are you fellow employees and you have to deal with them.

If you have a job in high school, you can also use it as a gateway to see if you will appreciate your chosen profession. Related jobs to your career choice will help you decide if you truly want to become fully know ledged in that field of work. This could save you money and large amounts of time in college/university if you made the wrong choice. For example you may go to university for a certain amount of years to become a veterinarian and then finally realize that you do not like this field of work. Well if you worked/volunteered at an animal hospital you would have realized this sooner in your life.

A job can help you recognize who’s the boss and how to respect their authority. If you have a part time job while attending high school it will also help you decide what you want to be and if it is the right choice for a future career path. Teenagers should definitely have a part time job while go through high school.

Divorce

I never really thought about what my family meant to me until my parents got a divorce. I saw that I no longer had what I call a “true family”. Divorce is a hard thing to have to deal with. Thousands of parents get divorced each year but I do not think that they realize what affect their divorce has on their children. My parents got divorced when I was about nine years old. Their divorce was an incredibly hard thing for me to deal with and I hid my emotions because I never knew how to express them. I never talked about them or anything like that. I kept my feelings bottled up inside not letting anyone come in. Being a child of divorced parents, I’ve experienced moments of sadness, fear, and joy that are unimaginable.

Sadness is one of the harder emotions that I had to deal with. After my parent’s divorce my mom got custody of me, and my dad could just visit. Since my dad lives far away from here I only get to see him once or twice a year. This is extremely difficult for me because of the relationship that my father and I have. We are exceptionally close to each other and not being able to see him all the time is tough for me to deal with. There are times when I miss him a great deal. It’s heartbreaking not to be able to wake up and see my dad every morning. There are times when my mom and I will get into a fight and I no longer have my dad to go run to so he can hold me and tell me that it will be alright. Not having him here I get lonely and I start to cry when I think about him. I wish that my parents were back together. I wish he would walk through the door and I would run up and hug him. As much pain and sadness that I have from this divorce I know that I will always feel this way and I just have to find a way to express it.

Another emotion that I am faced with is fear. Some people might ask why would I be afraid? There is a reason behind this feeling. I have felt a sense of fear since my parents got a divorce. I fear that I will not be able to find “the one”. My parents thought that they were meant for each other but come to find out there were not “the one” for each other. I am scared that the person that I might think is “the one” will not really be “the one” and if I marry them then we would get a divorce just like my parents did. There is also a fear of hurting one of my parents. I am at the age where I can choose who I want to live with but I do not want hurt one of their feelings by choosing one parent over the other. I experience fear everyday when I think about my parent’s divorce but I cannot live everyday for the rest of my life in fear.

Along with the emotions of sadness and fear comes the feeling of joy. The only way to truly get over a divorce is to look on the bright side. There is a sense of joy when I realize that instead of just having two parents, I now have four parents who love and care for me. I get to have the pleasure and excitement of spending time with two families instead of just one. I have more parents to give me advice and guidance. I get to have more brothers and sisters and there is always someone around to talk to. There is never a dull moment because things are always new and amusing. Since my parent’s divorce things have been crazy but there is so much joy that comes with it.

Divorce is a hard thing to deal with. It has its ups and downs. I am faced with sadness, fear, and joy everyday. Over the years I have learned to try and overcome these emotions that I feel from my parent’s divorce. Everyday is a new day. I just have to learn to look on the bright side and see the best out of this bad situation. Everyone is faced with difficult situations some worse than mine but I believe that God never gives us situations that are too difficult for us to handle. Everything that happens I feel happens for a reason. I know that I will be fine and I will learn to deal with my parent’s divorce and someday fully get over it. In the mean time I am taking one day at a time and one step at a time in getting over the divorce.

In the essay “Don’t Let Stereotypes Warp your Judgement”, by Robert C. Heilbroner, he discusses how stereotypes cause us to prejudge the different types of people in the world before actually getting to know them. He writes about the types of stereotyping and how we do it without recognizing it, when we begin, and what we should do to try to prevent it. He gives clear examples of the many types of stereotyping. Every point that the author makes in this essay is valid. Especially the points about childhood stereotyping, how we try to make sense of the world, and what we should try to do to prevent ourselves from stereotyping so much.

Heilbroner writes, “ We begin to type-cast people in our early childhood.” This statement is true. Not only do we begin to typecast at an early age, our peers greatly influence how we are to typecast another peer. Kids can be cruel and hurtful even when it comes to a simple kickball game. When is comes to choosing teams, stereotyping is sometimes used. Some of the children who are fit and in shape might exclude and over weight child because they are thought to be slow or not athletic. Even if a child receives good grades, he or she might be typecast as a teacher’s pet. This child may not be liked by his peers just because he does well in school and he can be called names such as dork or geek. Things like this can scar a child mentally and even cause a low feeling of

self worth. It takes us a while to realize that these simple assumptions aren’t always correct.

Cheap Custom Essays on Stereotypes

essay writing service

“Sometimes stereotyping can be used to help us make sense of this complicated world.” Heilbroner also mentions in his essay. Sometimes it can be hard for us to comprehend all the complexities of the world. There are so many different types of people that we actually put them into categories to try to help us understand them. Actually, putting people into categories kind of blinds us from seeing the true person. We categorize by race, occupation, physical appearance, and a variety of other things. Something that we most often put in to a category is race. Out of all the things we have to offer, the color of our skin and culture background we have seems to stick out the most. In the past there were certain hate groups such as the KKK, that showed extreme hatred towards any other race than the white race. The KKK would do violent things to them such as brutal beatings or even hangings. Now days stuff like this is very rare although hatred of other races is still among us. We have come to more of an expectance that the only thing different was the color of skin. It is a known fact that race has nothing to do with our personalities.

We know that stereotyping is wrong, so we should try to do things to prevent it. The author suggest that we become aware of the standardized pictures in our head and disregarded them and that we should begin with individualism rather than begin with a

type. Doing so can help us know people for who they really are rather than what the world says they are. Even though getting the mental pictures out of or heads can be hard,

it’s something that should be done. Another thing we can do to prevent stereotyping is to get out explore our differences in culture and make your own judgement. If we get out into the world, we can meet so many different types of people. Every person has a story behind him or her and every person has something unique about him or her.

Agreeing with all the points that the author makes in this essay we can see that stereotyping is something some of us do on a daily basis and we need to realize this. It seems as though it has taken over the world in some form. And it seems as though it does not help the world and it does not make us feel better about ourselves. Do we do this purposely? I would say probably not. Many of the things we hear and see while growing up paint those mental pictures in our heads and sometimes we prejudge subconsciously without even realizing it. That is why we should try to recognize these pictures and make no use of them. Maybe we should start with our children and tell them to get to know someone before excluding them in groups. They can expand their intelligence by trying to understand the diversity of everything. There is nothing positive to come of stereotyping. It only causes us to be blind to the world. The world is has so much to offer in it’s uniqueness and we should embrace it instead of judge it.

Existence of God

It seems clear that philosophy somehow is relevant to the important questions human beings deal eighth in their everyday lives. The existence of God is one of the basic questions in philosophy. The concept of god is ambiguous and differs from person to person and from society to society. Theists believe that God exists, atheists that he doesn’t, and agnostics that we don’t have a good reason to believe in one-way or the other (Slick). There are many arguments for the existence of God, but they all have objections to the premises offered. Some believers argue that if we cannot prove God really exists then we are entitled to believe that he does. On the other hand a theist could point out that if we cannot prove God does exist, we are entitled to believe he does not. There is no way we can prove the existence of God, but there are few arguments that give reasons why we should believe in God, but unfortunately they all have objections to them. Two arguments trying to prove the existence of god, and are not completely successful, are the teleological arguments, the cosmological arguments, and Pascal’s wager.

The teleological argument argues that there is an order in the universe, but order cannot exist without design for which this means that there must be a designer, God (Engel). According to Philosopher Paley he believes that just like a watch needs a watchmaker to build it, then everything else needs a designer. For example the eye cannot be put together by human engineering, which gives proof that there must be a Divine

Designer responsible for all of the design we observe in nature. Often the Teleological Argument is formulated as an induction

1. In all things we have experienced that exhibit design, we have experienced a designer of that artifact.

. The universe exhibits order and design

. Given #1, the universe must have a designer

4. The designer of the universe is God (Guthrie).

An objection to this method of induction is that it is clearly defective, because its premises are so obviously false. There are a great many orderly things for which they have no designer or order. For example snowflakes, rainbows and crystals are some things that people have failed to find a designer or order. For this reason we aren’t entitled to conclude by induction that all order implies an orderer or designer so inductive reasoning cannot support the teleological argument.

Another teleological argument is the Fifth of Aquinas Five ways. This fifth way is taken from the way in which nature is governed. Aquinas tries to prove the existence of God by saying that things that lack knowledge tend to act towards an end/goal. Either these things act towards an end by chance or by design, but it is obvious that it is not by chance, so it is said that things that lack knowledge act towards an end by design. If a thing is being directed towards an end it requires direction by some being endowed with

intelligence, therefore some intelligent being exists whom directs all natural things towards their end. This being is known as God (Craig).

The most obvious objections are that the teleological arguments prove only that there is a designer and not a standard God. The designer may not be a standard God; it

could be just as well as the devil, many Gods, some other God, or perhaps a deceased God. But the teleological arguments don’t ever prove that much, because its second

premise (the universe exhibits order and design) is doubtful for the reason that the inductive reasoning failed.

Another objection to the teleological argument is the problem of evil. Atheists have good reasons in not believing that there is a powerful and perfect being, which is god. These reasons are that if there is a perfect god then why is their evil in this world. If there is evil then there might not be a god, or he might not be benevolent and powerful as they say.

The cosmological argument also tries to prove the existence of god, but also has some objections. Cosmological arguments try to account for the existence of the universe by postulating a creator. These persons who also believe in god find it incredible that the universe could have come into existence all by itself. For this reason they believe that an ultimate powerful being exists, which is god. An example of this cosmological argument is called the first cause argument, which states that there must be a first cause for

everything that exist or occurs. However it seems impossible to explain the existence of everything in terms of cause and effect, because that were mean there would have to be an infinite series of causes, which seems impossible.

One way these ideas have been used to argue for Gods existence is the following

1. In everyday life, we find that given things or events are caused by others.

. But an infinite series of such causes is impossible, because then there would be no first cause, and thus no second, third, and so on.

. There must be a first cause God (Slick)

One objection against this cosmological argument is that the second premise is not acceptable. Mathematicians in particular have argued for the possibility of an infinite series of events of causes on the technical grounds, and some philosophers have accepted their reasoning (Thompson). Even though this premise was acceptable the premise will still be invalid. The argument would prove only that there are one or more uncaused first causes, not that there are just one. It would also prove only that a first cause exists, not that the first cause is God. Just like in the teleological argument, this first cause might instead be the devil. And if it would prove that the first cause might be a god, it would not prove that it is our god.

We can challenge cosmological arguments for God’s existence in at least three important ways. First, we can challenge the idea that an infinite series of causes is not

possible. Second, we can question the validity of the conclusion that there is just one first cause and that the first cause is God. Third, we can point out that any god proposed to account for the existence of the universe is just as much in need of a cause as the universe

itself, so that the argument proves the existence of gods if it proves the existence of even one.

According to Pascal’s Wager, either god exists or god doesn’t exist and we must decide one or the other. He says that if we weigh the gains and losses and then wager that God exist, and he does, we gain a great deal; but if he doesn’t, we lose nothing. He argues that for this we then should wager that he exists, because we have a great deal to gain and nothing to lose. An objection to his argument is that he seems to be wrong in arguing that neutrality is the same as disbelief. Another one is that here are all sorts of possible creators, and he does not give us no way to decide which one to believe in, yet the reward may well come only if we believe in the one who actually exists. The last objection is that Pascal offered no proof or reason for believing that a wager on the right God will yield the benefits he claims.

In conclusion, most conceptions of God are vague. They really cannot prove the existence of him. We cannot prove either the theistic or atheistic position because belief in God, ultimately, comes down to matter of faith. The argument that we are entitled to believe God exists because there is no argument that he does not exist is a

defective argument. The fact that people in all societies believe in some god is not a good reason to believe in any god in particular.

Emo is a form of punk music. It stands for emotional. It is a bit softer then punk however, sometimes it is just as hard. There is a cult like following of young love-struck or heartbroken adolescence following emo music and bands. The musicians tend to be very whiney and the lyrics are all similar having to do with angry broken hearts and hopeless romanticness. Some emo bands are dashboard confessional, death cab for cutie, action toolbelt, fallout boy, mae, rufio, so4plan, the early November, alkaline trio, brand new, and 1000s more. I believe that because emo is all about issues of the heart, it is the reason that teenagers tend to be drawn to it.. They have a connection to it like no adult could possibly have because they are at that awkward age where love is everywhere and they cant control their hormones. However most of the lead emo singers are men in there early 0s fresh out of the turmoil of adolescence and not quite ready for the seriousness of a real relationship with an adult. They are still caught up in their love lives from highschool. Here is an example of an emo song….

Did you ever look did you ever see that one person?

And the subtle way that they do these things and it hurts so much.

So much like choking down the embers of a great place.
