The first musical artist I can recall listening to was is Weird Al Yankovic. Although his songs were all comedic covers to other songs it gave me a chance to hear all different types of music. During the time I was listening to his music I thought it was just funny but now looking back I see that he had a lot of talent for playing music even though he used it a different way then most musicians because he could play almost every style of music from oldies, blues, jazz, rock n roll, polka, punk rock, even rap.

As I grew older I began listening rock n roll bands such as pearl jam, collective soul, and guns n roses with a few others. Their style of music was a softer rock than what I listen today. Their music was both accepted by me and at the same time accepted by my parents because for the most part their songs had positive messages with little use of profanity.

During the early 0’s I was introduced to rap when I was given my first cd, it was by Warren G and it was called Regulators. Around that time rap was an underground type of music that was just becoming mainstream it had no band, no back up singers and for the most all it needed was a beat and a mic this kind of music was called rap. Much like in the early days of rock n roll parents were offended by this music because it was made by African Americans and it challenged everyone’s ideas about how music is played, not to mention the lyrics. This type of music had a lot of other similarities with rock n roll, not in the music itself but the way it was viewed by adults. Like rock n roll it was only played on the radio late at night, it took a long time for videos to get airplay and that to was late at night, songs that did receive airplay had to be heavily edited, some CD’s were banned all together, And others had to have labels printed on them to warn parents of the use of explicit lyrics. Even with all the controversy surrounding rap music many kids like myself became fans of it.

Although I had a great deal of interest in rap music I still listened to other styles of music. At around this time rock n roll had been around for about 0 years and their were still great rock n roll bands some bands started to make their own sound out of traditional rock music. Some of these bands were Nirvana, while Nirvana was only around for a short period of time due to their lead singers suicide they led the way for many punk rock and grunge style bands. They also gave birth to concert traditions of stage diving and mosh pits. Some bands took rock music and made it a lot heavier like Marlin Manson, Pantera, White Zombie, and Slipknot. These bands started a way of playing music where instruments were played so loud that vocals had to screamed just to be heard over them.

So even in the few years I have been listening to music there have been a lot of changes in the styles. Because of all the changes I was exposed to many types of music and am a fan of many different artists today.

reaching the sky was meant to be the stairway to the heaven only for the pharaoh. Nowadays these both ancient cultures still hold many mysteries for us. Most of the things we know are based on the speculations of the scientists, not on the certain facts. Archeologists working on discovering more and more about the ancient civilizations that existed thousand years ago but appeared much more advanced then we used to think about it. However, many of the documents, scripts and art evidences disappeared during such a long time. Robbers, invaders and weather were the reason for the huge loss of historical items that were kept in ancient Maya cities and along the Nile. I am sure that in the future many of the mysteries will be unfolded, but as for now, ancient people keep fascinate us with their enigmas., caskets full of jewels, furniture in laid with ivory and gold, silver and alabaster bowls and vessels, chests filled with clothing and precious ornaments, jars filled with food and wine were put in the room next to the room with the mummy. Among the objects found in the Egyptian pyramids were the shabtis. Shabtis are small statues in the form of nude humans, often wrapped in linen and placed in model coffins. They were inscribed with a prayer for food offerings, although they probably also functioned as alternative abode for the ka. By the Middle Kingdom (05 B.C) the figures had become mummiform in shape, and their inscriptions clearly join the deceased with Osiris, the god of the underworld, who rose to prominence during this period. By late Dynasty XII (1850 B.C.) The statuettes’ original function as residence for the ka has expanded greatly. Although the original identification with the tomb owner was never lost, the figures were seen primarily as workers who performed a service for the deceased, and they became known by the ancient Egyptians as shabits. Rapidly shabit-figures came to represent the deceased’s servants in the afterlife and were so popular that they replaced the model servant statues previously deposited in upper-class graves of the Old and

The Scarlet Letter is a book of guilt. Simply put, it revolves around the effects of guilt and confession. Through Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne, Nathaniel Hawthorne illustrates the torturous effects of societal guilt, and the newfound personal freedom through confession. This applies to Dimmesdale, as he is a part of society and to Hester as she has been alienated and lives in the outskirts of the forest. The two ideas of suppressing and openly admitting sin contrast each other. The book can be seen as large comparison of Hester and Dimmesdale or the comparison of the effects of suppressing or admitting to sin. Hester, who is free from guilt wishes that her sin were never put into the publicfs eye. She does not like attention that comes hand in hand with the Scarlet Letter. Ironically, Arthur, whom people do not know has sinned, wishes for the truth to be let out. He wants society to know of his sin. Guilt is only applicable in society, and cannot be seen in the forest. Indeed, society plays a major role in guilt, but in further detail guilt is only torturous if it is kept in secrecy.

Arthur Dimmesdalefs torture from his guilt surfaces from its secrecy. The pain from a secret guilt is a universal feeling. The guilty know their wrongdoing and the fact that they know their crime, eats them away. Society applies rules and laws that make people fear and make people feel guilt. With this, it is easy to govern a fearing society. This could even be the reason why the Puritans were a success in the colonies. Their strict ideals kept them working hard, otherwise they would be struck down by their Godfs wrath. Accordingly, if a crime is committed and not confessed one must live with the guilt. Dimmesdalefs obligation to the people, being a reverend, is to take responsibility for his actions and confess. However, his character is portrayed as a coward and cannot confess to his sins unless Hester does it for him, who is the stronger of the two. In turn, his guilt tortures him. Critic Sally Buckner says, gcDimmesdalefs secret guilt gnaws so deeply inside him that he views himself with scorn as a hypocrite, and he is unable to make his peace with his God or to feel at ease with his fellow manh (Magill 580). Indeed, he is a hypocrite. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale has gone against his religion.

This guilt, however, is not all negative. With this experience, Arthur can now communicate to his parishioners more personally. He understands the common manfs pain and can give sermons that touch everyone. However, he is in constant torture. This is an invisible force that presses Dimmesdale constantly and is represented by him grasping his chest. It is seen in the beginning of the book where he had just interrogated Hester, and is now trying to defend her decision of not speaking the fellow sinnerfs name. gfShe will not speak!f murmured Mr. Dimmesdale, who, leaning over the balcony, with his hand upon his heart, had awaited the result of his appeal.h As Hester has her Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale also has a form of the letter upon his chest. Chillingworth stumbles upon this mark when Dimmesdale slumbers in his study. He observes what could only be proof of Dimmesdalefs sin. The only remedy for Arthur is to confess. In an attempt to do so, he goes to the scaffold in the middle of the night. There he wishes that someone would notice him but the only ones that notice him are Hester, Pearl and Chillingworth. And then with the passing of a comet in the shape of an gAh Arthur sees that he must confess. At the conclusion of the book, he finally struggles to confession. With his final lungful of air, he tells the world of his sin. After confession an unseen force has been lifted from the chest. .

Both of the sinners have the mark. The difference is that Hesterfs is already open to the public, thus it is in the shape of the patch on her bosom. Dimmesdalefs mark is internal with his guilt, until it came to a point of severity in which it came through to his chest revealing itself to Chillingworth. Hesterfs lack of guilt is from the forced public humiliation in which her sin is no longer a secret. Her guilt has now taken the form of the Letter itself, for her to wear for everyone to see. Frank Magill, editor of Masterplots, says, gHester Prynnefs pregnancy forces her sin to public view, and is compelled to wear the scarlet eAf as a symbol of her adultery. Yet although she is apparently isolated from normal association with edecentf folk, Hester, having come to terms with her sin, is inwardly reconciled to God and self; and she ministers to the needy among her townspeople, reconciling herself with others until some observe that her eAf now stands for eAblefh (58). Once the committed sin has been put into public attention, the guilt can no longer be seen. Hester now grows as a woman in the society, becoming more gAble.h In addition, Hester has also settled in the outskirts, away from the normal society where she can raise Pearl without society or guilt.

Guilt is a creation from society. The rules and laws create the system of guilt that controls the actions of people. This intricate system was strong in the Puritan colonies. Overrun by God fearing citizens, the people kept strict rules and regulations. Although they believed in predestination, one must still be punished for the sins in the hope for the sinner to be relinquished from the sin. Perhaps the punishment from society is salvation, contrary to what most believe. If the sinner is not punished, then they must live their lives with guilt, which is the true punishment. Hester was able to live her life more freely with her sentence, but Arthur, who had no sentence, suffered. However, if society werenft in place to begin with, there wouldnft be any need for guilt. Pearl, having grown up outside the confines of society, is freer than anyone. She has no guilt whatsoever. The suppression of guilt leads to self-torture and inevitably destroys us unless we confess to our sins. However, confession isnft useful in order for salvation and a rightful path to heaven for the puritans believed in predestination. Confession is only valid to be at ease with oneself. It is personal salvation from the incapacitating effects of guilt.

Paul Revere is one of America’s greatest hero’s from the American Revolution. He saved many lives in his midnight ride during the Boston massacre. He was an idol to every ones eyes, so he should be honored and put in Madame Tussaud’s Was Museum.

During 1774 through the spring of 1775 Paul Revere was working for the Boston Committee of Correspondence and the Massachusetts Committee of Safety. For his work he was an express rider, so he had to carry news, messages, and copies of resolutions as far away as New York and Philadelphia.

On the night of April 18, 1775 he was sent to ride to Lexington, Massachusetts to warn Sam Adams and John Hancock that the British troops were coming for them. So, on his way to warn them he warned every house he went by from Boston to Lexington. He got to the place they were staying at, at about midnight. When he got there William Dawes then joined him. They decided, on their own, to continue to Concord, Massachusetts where all the weapons were hidden. Then the third rider, Dr. Samuel Prescott, joined them. A little after he joined them, before they got to Concord, British troops arrested them. William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott escaped pretty quickly, but Paul didn’t escaped. After a while they released him. He had no horse to ride so he had to walk all the way to Lexington.

Paul Rivoire (Revere) was born in December of 174. His parents are Apollos Rivoire and Deborah Rivoire; her maiden name is Hichborn. A while after immigrating to America, Paul changed his last name of Rivoire to Revere. Paul was the second of at least nine children; there could have possibly been 1 children. He was also the oldest surviving son. He went to school at North Writing School. In 1754 his father died which made him have to get most of his families income. He married Sarah Orne in 1757, but unfortunately she died in 177. So, a little after Sarah died he got married to Rachel Walker. When Paul was 76 he retired and left his copper business to his sons and grandchildren. During Paul Revere’s last years he was healthy and he died on May 10, 1818 of natural causes.

Moral Differences Are Numerous

“The big sleep, kick the bucket, off to a better place”, we as a society try to dissociate ourselves and even disillusion ourselves from the fact that we are all eventually going to die. Death is not something that we must fear but embrace. There is no magic potion which is going to make us live forever. For this reason we must talk openly about our deaths, when this topic is often brought up it is pushed to the wayside for a later day. When should we want to talk about it, when were on our death bed waiting to die? The answer to this difficult question is NOW! We must talk about it now since it leads to our needing to talk about our rights as human beings. We should have the right to decide if we believe euthanasia or assisted suicide is an option that one could take. The idea of euthanasia or assisted suicide is a touchy subject for most people because they have reservations as to who, when, where and under what conditions. We must now decide if euthanasia and assisted suicide is morally sound and if we accept these ideas. Some prominent arguments set forward about euthanasia and assisted suicide is that they are killing and letting the person die. We must then ask ourselves is there a moral difference between killing and letting die and the answer in no. There is no moral difference between euthanasia and assisted suicide. We not only need to talk about the moral aspects affecting these topics but also to consider the complexity of the topic. There are many other considerations to make each of which has a substantial affect that ultimately effect our decision making such as mental aspects, physical aspects and our human rights. The relevance of the morals surrounding euthanasia and assisted suicide debate play important roles in making policies affecting euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Morals are the foundation in which we live our lives from obeying the law to walking down the street to the way in which we interact with one another. When looking at the moral differences between killing and letting die we must realize that this is a very complicated and highly debated subject.

To understand which approach of killing and letting die are morally just we must embrace the old saying stating that there are exceptions to every rule. To fully appreciate why this saying holds true let us look at the example provided by Rachels in which two cases are put forward one in which “Smith stands to gain a large inheritance if anything should happen to his six year-old cousin.” Smith drowns his cousin, and then disguises it as an accident. The article continues on to show that Smith was found to have murdered his “six year-old cousin.” The second case involves the same scenario, except, when Jones goes in to kill his cousin the child has fallen and is face down in the tub. Jones does not save the child, he merely lets him die. In summary Smith did the actual act of killing whereas Jones simply let the child die. Such examples are used to endless means to try to justify that killing and letting die are morally equal, if under highly extreme conditions could they ever have the same weight?

Cheap Custom Essays on euthanasia

essay writing service

Since everyone has different standards and morals, we have to look at more then ones morals in deciding what is the most morally superior answer, especially given the examples put forward. If one was to pick Jones over Smith or Smith over Jones which decision would be ethically unsound do to the extreme conditions knowing what we know about morals and values.

The Jones and Smith examples are not the only cases in which killing and assisted suicides are justifiable in terms of ethics. For instance, in a circumstance like the one where you’re out hiking and your loved one’s safety line breaks and he/she falls off the face of the mountain that you were escalading. This person now in intense amounts of pain asks you to help them put an end to the pain and suffering and you are put in the position of ending the love ones life to help them escape a long and painful end. There are many things that need to be considered before terminating the life. There are at hand other ways to look at this debate as to say that killing and letting die may have the same end result death, but if the end result is the same then how can there be a difference. It is the actions that dignify the difference.

When looking at the subject of ethics and the impact it has on killing and letting die there are other impacts or differences that need to be addressed such the mental stresses that have implications on effect not only on the patient but the family and the ever popular doctor. Killing and letting die are important issue that should be addressed in cases such as ill patients. In the case of dealing with terminally ill patients the idea of ending ones suffering may play a large part of the mental stability that the patient has. As we pass through our lives we hear of people dieing everyday either it be a loved one, a friend or acquaintance if we hear that the person died in there sleep then we say that they died a good death and even to the point were we include ourselves saying “I hope to have a peaceful death like that one”. The reason no-one says that same line when someone is suffering through a degenerative disease such as cancer or aids is to facilitate the ease of their conscious, because it is understood that it wasn’t an easy death. Letting someone die is seen as a more humane and better way in letting someone come to life’s end. What if letting someone die is worse off than the individual having their life terminated for their own good. If the final end is death the only difference between killing and letting die is that we let nature take its course. If we let everything take nature’s course we would be back in the Stone Age as apposed to the living arrangements we currently enjoy. We as humans have the tendency of disrupting the natural way so in that regard why is it that terminating a fellow humans life who is under there own judgement and that there is no way that they would recover so difficult.

The most powerful example set forward in the mental battle is dignity, the dignity that the person wants to uphold in there mind. To be killed or to slowly let die in a haze of painkillers where the patient is unaware of the surroundings and is simply there in body but not in mind. The notion of letting die as opposed to killing “reflects not just a fear of experiencing substantial suffering when dying, but a desire to retain dignity and control during this last period of life.” (Brock) Death is the here and end all of our existence. It is better to go off with dignity than have no dignity at all.

Morals are what our society is based on; the laws in which we follow are all based on morals from the laws against stealing to the laws against forgery. Laws are not the only ways in which ethics play a part in our lives religions base there fundamentals on morals for example in Christianity there are the Ten Commandments, the Islamic people follow the Koran and Jews follow The Old Testament. Since morals play such a powerful role in our everyday lives it is just to talk about the relevancy of morals in relation to policies on euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Euthanasia can be simplified into the termination of life by painless means for the purpose of ending severe physical suffering. Euthanasia can be broken down into three categories the first of these is ppassive euthanasia. Passive euthanasia is the action of withdrawing or withholding the means of maintaining or prolonging life; for example, removing a respirator from a patient who cannot breathe without assistance. Another type of euthanasia is called voluntary active euthanasia. Voluntary active euthanasia is mercy killing administered to the patient who has requested it of their own free will and understands the implications of the consequences. The final kind of euthanasia is involuntary active euthanasia. Involuntary active euthanasia is mercy killing administered to the patient without their informed consent; for example, babies and incapable adults. In the debate over the righteousness of euthanasia assisted suicide must be addressed. Assisted suicide is someone, usually a doctor, and a member of the family or close friend, will provide the patient with the knowledge and means to take his or her own life. The life-ending procedure is then carried out under that persons guidance. Also there is something called physician assisted suicide which is when a doctor acts directly to cause the death of a terminally ill patient, most commonly by lethal injection or asphyxiation. In euthanasia morals are used to ease the pain of the patient as with assisted suicide. The relevance of the moral status used for euthanasia and assisted suicide is deep rooted into our societies from coast to coast euthanasia and assisted suicide are looked at differently due to the cultural differences for example in the United States it is unlawful to commit euthanasia but “allowing to die is the only legally protected alternative to maximal treatment.” (Battin) Conversely in the Netherlands laws against are less constrictive it is not to say that the morals of one country are better than the other one it is simply that the relationship between doctor and patient are different. In the United States as well as Canada the patient doctor relationship is not as extent as in the Netherlands. Morals are not different murdering someone out of hate is still an immoral thing as opposed to ending a dying persons life out of compassion and duty to uphold ones dignity and last wishes.

The issues surrounding the question of whether killing and letting die are two different entities or are merely one has been fought over for countless discussions and will be until a decision is made at the bureaucratic level. We as society push forward into the next millennium and expand our minds, the notion of selective killing and letting die issues will arise as one due to the acute possibilities that surround this issue. An informed decision cannot truly be made with only knowing one of the issues of a problem that contains many more complex angles. That is why one cannot make a decision clearly with only considering the moral implications of the killing and letting die scenario. The mental aspects of the patient need to be addressed; the patient’s loved ones and respectively the physician on hand treating the patient. The patient has the right to uphold their own dignity in times were dignity is all that one may posses and want to hold on to. The moral dilemmas that engulf the euthanasia and assisted suicide are plundered with barb wired fences and to go through them would be disastrous. Yet for progress to be made, we must forge through the barb wired fence and claim freedom to the oppressed individuals who deserve the right to choose.

“All managers can be good coaches.”

I would agree with this statement with the assumption that the managers in this particular statement refers to good/competent managers. In order achieve an organization’s goals and targets, managers play as important a role as the workers. Just as a professional sports team would not do well without a good coach, an organization will not function well if there are just workers without one or more good managers in charge. Be it a department manager, a human resource manager, a sports club manager, or any other types of managers, it is important for them to provide the necessary coaching, guidance, motivation and care for their subordinates in addition to managing their respective departments well in order to contribute towards the organization’s strategic plans and goals. Just like in any sport, the coach has to assess each his of his players’ strengths, weakness, special skills or abilities and team strategy of his team in order to come up with a coaching strategy to develop his players thereby improving the team or player and working towards the targets set by the club’s management.

Identifying strengths and weaknesses

This is one of the most basic requirements of being a good manager or a good coach. A good manager will be able to assess his/her subordinate’s strengths and weaknesses thus he/she will be able pinpoint on various areas to provide guidance, be it guidance on the job or recommending him/her for training and development. This is important as this affects the productivity of the department and indirectly affects the organization. As a result, productivity is decreased and time is wasted and costs will increase due to the errors in the employee’s work. It is also useful to find out about each of the subordinate’s Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA). This is important in the sense that although an employee may do well in his/her current job but according to his/her knowledge, skills and abilities, he/she may be better suited for another job within the organization and thus recommendations can be made. This relates to being a good coach in the sense that a coach must identify the player’s strengths and weaknesses so as to conduct more trainings pinpointing on those areas that are weak. For example in a football team, coaches more conduct cross-country runs for players who are not as physically fit and half field ‘5 on 5’ for the development of the player’s skill. The position that a player plays on the field may be switched if the coach finds that he is more suited to play in another position or may even play in both positions.

Motivation and Morale

Motivation is an important tool to make employees work harder. Managers must be able to motivate and keep the employees’ morale high in the department.

Conducting regular meetings with them to address their concerns, recommending to the management to improve their working environment, or recommending to the

management to award employees incentives or bonuses for good performance at work, words of encouragement or even just a pat on the back to name a few, will help keep the morale high. In the case of a coach, the morale of his players is extremely important as it directly affects the players’ performances both in competition and in training. Therefore like any good managers, coaches have to frequently keep the motivation and morale of his players high. In many sports, incentives and bonuses are awarded to the top scoring players and to players who performed well in a match.

Employee Retention

This is an important trait as good employees or players are invaluable to the organization. Good managers and good coaches always fight to keep their best talents and they recognize that turnover is expensive. They conduct regular meetings to address the employees’ concerns and periodically review job expectations and development opportunities with their employees. Some managers developed a measurement system to gauge employee satisfaction on a regular basis. At Bruker Biospin, a multi-national company specializing in biomedical equipments, the manager of the engineering department created a survey form to let the employees reflect on how they feel about their managers in terms of competency, leadership qualities and management style. Suggestions can be also made through the survey form to address any incompetence in their managers. Phil Jackson, coach of the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association, conducts regular meetings with his players to see how they feel about his coaching and the management of the club. Suggestions of improvement in the system are raised to the management by him and thus upholding his players’ willingness to stay in the club.

Training and Development

Training and development is very important for any organization, be it business or sports to keep their competitive edge in this world where change is the only constant. This is a continuous effort designed to improve employee/players competency and in turn, improving organizational performance. Managers and coaches have to recognize the importance of training and development as it affects the productivity of his subordinates and players. This is usually done through on-the-job training emphasizing on a one to one basis and is often considered as the responsibility of the manager or coach.

Communication

A department will not function well if there is no effective communication between its manager and his/her subordinates. Likewise with any coach and player, improving communication between individuals is essential for any department or organization. Therefore good managers and coaches are able to communicate with his/her staff or players as ideas can be disseminated across efficiently. It also provides useful feedbacks when staff and players communicate well with their managers and coaches thus improving work environment, productivity, and morale of the organization.

Conclusion

In conclusion, all good managers have the abilities essential for being a good coach. In this competitive environment, good managers have an even bigger responsibility to promote the cohesiveness and productivity of his department although a substantial part of a manager’s success depends on the higher management as well. Although the area of specialization is vastly different between a manager and a coach, the essential skills to manage his/her department and the skills needed for a coach to bring his team towards their goals and targets are the same.

COMMUNICATION THEORIES

A. Muted Group Theory

Cheris Kramarae is one of many feminists who tried to unmask the female silence. She began her research of how women are portrayed and positioned in society at the University of Illinois in 174. Kramarae first studied women’s portrayals in cartoons. She found out that men made all of the forceful statements and women were depicted as being emotional and wishy-washy. After this research, Kramarae developed the Muted Group Theory to help explain and alter the muted status of women.

It was Edwin Ardener, a social anthropologist from Oxford University, who first came up with the idea of women as a muted group. He emphasized that because of women’s lack of power, many are mute.

Muted Group Theory is a critical theory because it is concerned with power and how it is used against people. While critical theories can separate the powerful and the powerless any number of ways, this theory chooses to bifurcate the power spectrum into men and women.

Muted Group Theory begins with the premise that language is culture bound, and because men have more power than women, men have more influence over the language, resulting in language with a male-bias. Men create the words and meaning for the culture, allowing expression of their ideas. Women, on the other hand, are left out of this meaning creation and left without a means to express that which is unique to them. That leaves women as a muted group. The theory rests on three assumptions. First it says that men and women perceive the world differently because they have different perception-shaping experiences. Second, it states that men enact their power politically, perpetuating their power and suppressing womens ideas and meanings from gaining public acceptance. Third, it asserts that women must convert their unique ideas, experiences, and meanings into male language in order to be heard.

Such premise and assumptions lead to a number of hypotheses about womens communication. According to the theory women have a more difficult time expressing themselves than do men; they understand what men mean more easily than men understand what they mean; they communicate with each other using media not accepted by the dominant male communicators; they are less satisfied with communication than are men; and, they are not likely to create new words, but sometimes do so to create meanings special and unique to women. Thus, women use diaries, journals, letters, folklore, gossip, art, poems, songs and other means to express themselves.

B. Constructivism Theory

Jesse Delia is a scholar from the University of Illinois who has played a leading role in developing the theory of constructivism.

Constructivism is a scientific theory that attempts to explain why some people are more successful in attaining their interpersonal communication goals than others. According to the theory, people who are cognitively complex in their perceptions of others have a greater capacity for sophisticated communication that will achieve positive outcomes. This is because people who are cognitively complex can employ a rhetorical message design logic which involves the creation of person-centered messages.

Constructivism makes three assumptions regarding communication. It says that all communication is intentional; it is goal-driven; and, negotiation comes into play with shared interpretation (meaning).

Thus, constructivism focuses on individuals rather than interactions. It tries to account for why people make the certain communicative choices. Constructs are the basis of constructivism. They are dimensions of judgment and can be thought of as filters, files, templates, or interpretive schemas.

C. Social Judgment Theory

Mr. Muzafer Sherif, a psychologist at the University of Oklahoma, is responsible for the development of the Social Judgment Theory. He postulated three latitudes of attitudes which are the latitudes of acceptance, rejection and non-commitment. The latitude of acceptance consists of the information a person finds pleasing and acceptable; the latitude of reflection comprised of information that is objectionable; and, the latitude of non-commitment includes information which is neither acceptable nor objectionable.

In summary, social judgment theory states that every person has a statement or message either accepted or rejected based on his/her cognitive map. He/she accepts or rejects a message based on his/her ego-involvement and if it falls within his/her latitude of acceptance. Its five principles include the following

Principle 1 We have categories of judgment by which we evaluate persuasive positions.

Principle When we receive persuasive information, we locate it on our categories of judgment.

Principle Our level of ego-involvement affects the size of our latitudes.

Principle 4 We tend to distort incoming information to fit our categories of judgment.

Principle 5 Small to moderate discrepancies between our anchor positions and the one advocated will cause us to change; large discrepancies will not.

D. Groupthink Theory

Irving Janis is a psychologist who coined the term Groupthink in 17. Janis contends that Groupthink - defined as a mode of thinking which arises when concurrence-seeking behavior in a cohesive group becomes so dominant that it tends to override realistic appraisal of alternative approaches - is a major explanation for fiascoes in decisions making processes involving major policy and business decisions.

Janis, in his research, found out that groupthink was a viable explanation for the bad decisions taken in the two cases studied (Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Vietnam War Escalation). According to his analysis the groupthink behavior has the following symptoms Firstly, there exists in the group a shared illusion of invulnerability that leads to over-optimism and willingness to take extraordinary risks. Secondly, a collective rationalization process is developed in order to discount warnings and negative feed-back. Thirdly, there is an unquestionable belief in the morality of the group. Fourthly, stereotypes of enemy groups and leaders are created and sustained, even in the light of insufficient information. Fifthly, direct pressure is applied against any expression of dissident views. Sixthly, there is a tendency to conform to group consensus. Seventhly, there is an illusion of unanimity concerning all the judgments made by the group. Lastly, members of the group appoint themselves as mind guards of group consensus and morality

The consequences of group behavior exhibiting all or some of these symptoms are poor decisions which lead to negative outcomes. These poor decisions arise from weak decision making processes caused by groupthink behavior. This type of behavior according to Janis can be avoided by using group members as critical evaluators, having parallel policy analysis teams, using outside experts, evaluating former decisions and having a leader with an impartial stance in terms of desired outcomes. Other examples of groupthink disaster as mentioned by Janis are the Roosevelts complacency before Pearl Harbor, Trumans invasion of North Korea, Watergate, Truman’s decision to bomb Hiroshima and Regans Iran-Contra arms deals.

E. Face Theory

Erving Goffman, a sociologist, developed the face theory. According to him, face is a favorable social impression that an individual wants others to have of him/her. The three important characteristics of the face are

1. Face is social, meaning it is only created in relational contexts

. Face is a positive impression of an individual as held by others

. Face refers to the favorable social attributes that an individual wants others to have of him or her

Meanwhile, Goffman also stated the face-needs such as the need for control or the people’s need for others to acknowledge their individual autonomy and self-sufficiency; need for approval or the need for others to acknowledge one’s friendliness and honesty; and, the need for admiration or the people’s need for other to acknowledge their talents and accomplishments.

F. Cultivation Theory

George Gerbner is the dean emeritus of the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. He also leads the Cultural Indicators Project, which for the past couple of decades has been the most comprehensive study of television’s impact on viewers.

The cultivation theory got its start with the cultivation hypothesis, created by Gerbner, which states attempts to understand how heavy exposure to cultural imagery will shape a viewers concept of reality. Stemming directly from his work on the Cultural Indicators Research Project, Gerbner used the cultural analysis research strategy to cumulate his theory on television cultivation.

Essentially, the theory states that heavy exposure to mass media, namely television, creates and cultivates attitudes more consistent with a media conjured version of reality than with what actual reality is. The cultivation theory asserts that heavy viewers attitudes are cultivated primarily by what they watch on television. Gerbner views this television world as not a window on or reflection of the world, but a world in itself. This created version of the world entices heavy viewers to make assumptions about violence, people, places, and other fictionalized events which do not hold true to real life events.

Sill, according to the cultivation theory, the television creates a shared view of the world (because of its dominance); homogenizes different cultures; portrays the world/society as a bad place in which to live (if it bleeds it leads); have small effects, gradual, indirect but can accumulate over a long time and because of the television, people become distrustful of the world/society.

G. Symbolic Interactionism

Symbolic Interactionism developed as a sociological theory from the work of American philosophies, especially George Herbert Mead (186-11). Mead’s major contribution was the concept of ‘self’ as essential to the process of becoming a human being. Social interaction takes place through symbols, including language. Symbols are created by humans to refer to the ways in which objects and events are perceived rather than to their intrinsic nature. Mead’s student, Blumer systematically developed the theory and named it in 17.

Symbolic Interactionism, as thought of by Herbert Blumer, is the process of interaction in the formation of meanings for individuals. Blumer came up with three core principles to his theory. They are meaning, language, and thought. These core principles lead to conclusions about the creation of a persons self and socialization into a larger community. Meaning states that humans act toward people and things based upon the meanings that they have given to those people or things. Meanwhile, Language gives humans a means by which to negotiate meaning through symbols. It is by engaging in speech acts with others, symbolic interaction, that humans come to identify meaning, or naming, and develop discourse. Lastly, Thought modifies each individuals interpretation of symbols. Thought, based-on language, is a mental conversation or dialogue that requires role taking, or imagining different points of view.

On the whole, Symbolic Interactionism is based on three assumptions first, communication occurs through the creation of shared significant symbols; second, the self is constructed through communication; and, third is a social activity becomes possible through the role-taking process.

H. Coordinated Management of Meaning

Barnett Pearce and Vernon Cronen are communication scholars from the Fielding Institute and the University of Massachusetts, respectively, who co-created the theory of coordinated management of meaning. Pierce and Cronen asserted that the quality of our personal lives and of our social worlds is directly related to the quality of communication in which we engage. Their theory, Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM), is based on the assertion that persons-in-conversation co-construct their own social realities and are simultaneously shaped by the worlds they create. They presented CMM as a practical theory designed to improve life. Instead of seeking truth claims, they value multiple stories of local knowledge and consequences.

The theory believes on the following premises (1) the social world is not found or discovered, but created; () the experience of persons-in-conversation is the primary social process of human life; () the way people communicate is often more important than the content of what they say; (4) the actions of persons-in-conversation are reflexively reproduced as the dialogue continues; (5) CMM see people as curious participants in a pluralistic world

The Coordinated Management of Meaning theorizes communication as a process that allows us to create and manage social reality. As such, this theory describes how we as communicators make sense of our world, or create meaning. Meaning can be understood to exist in a hierarchy, depending on the sources of that meaning. Along this hierarchy there are stories told, stories lived and stories that are unexpressed in each person’s life. Stories told (Coherence by Pearce) involve relationship, self-concept, and the culture in which shape what we say and others have said. Coordination on the other hand is the result of the meshing of stories we lived. It is the process by which people come together in conversation to exhibit what they feel is necessary, noble, and good and to stay away of things they fear, hate, or despise. Finally, mystery is the final component of the three and deals with a sense of wonder for stories not yet heard.

“Probably the greatest achievement of the Tain and the Ulster cycle is the series of women, …on whose strong and diverse personalities the action continually turns…” (xv). Although the men are portrayed as the more powerful, domineering sex of the Irish oral epic Tain Bo Cuailnge, there are several women in The Tain who possess great emotional and physical power. However strong the male characters in the Tain are, they become weak under the women’s influence.

Medb, the main female character in the Tain, is equally if not more powerful than her husband Ailill, the King of Connacht. It is Medb who decides to take the Brown Bull of Cuailnge. It is Medb who seems to be more in command of the army instead of Aillill. Medb is the major instigator and cause of the battles of the Tain and she manipulates many men for selfish reasons of proving to her husband that she has greater wealth. She uses her power of persuasion on many warriors by promising them incredible wealth, property, Finnabair’s hand in marriage and even her “own friendly thighs on top” so that they would agree to go against Cuchulainn. Medb In the incidence of her manipulation of Ferdia, Cuchulainn’s foster brother, she uses her skill of deceit by telling Ferdia what Cuchulainn never said “He said he wouldn’t count it any great triumph if his greatest feat of arms were your downfall” (16). Medb uses her sexual power by seducing Fergus. Ailill has no objection to this. In fact, he calls her actions “fair enough” because “she is justified. She does it to keep his help on the Tain” (10). Medb is also one of the few women in the epic that is able to physically fight in the battles and successfully injured Cethern. “She carried a light, stinging, sharp-edged lance in her hand, and she held an iron sword with a woman’s grip over her head a massive figure. It was she who came against me first” (08). The only moment of weakness Medb shows in the epic is at the end of the final battle when she is injured and begs Cuchulainn to spare her. He does spare her because he “not being a killer of women” ; although ironically it is Medb who sends the various warriors to kill him.

Beauty is one of the predominant powers of several of the women in the Tain and this beauty is successfully used to conquer the men of the Tain as well. Finnibair, Medb and Aillil’s daughter, is the most beautiful woman in Connacht. She uses her beauty by enticing all the men her mother brings her to battle Cuchulainn by promising herself to them, although she has no intention on doing so. In contrast to Medb however, Finnibair only gives herself to one man, Roachad, the man she truly loves. Furthermore, Finnibair shows remorse by falling “dead of shame” upon hearing the news of the seven hundred men who died in battle because of her empty promises unlike Medb who never shows remorse for any of her evil actions. Derdriu is another character in the Tain who’s beauty is so powerful that it causes “harsh, hideous deeds don in anger at Ulster’s high king, and little graves everywhere” in Ulster. However, Derdrui’s power of beauty is something she does not intentionally use to cause death and destruction to others. Emer, Cuchulainn’s wife, also uses her power of beauty to make Cuchulainn perform great feats in order to win her. “Cuchulainn caught sight of the girl’s breasts over the top of her breast” (7). In their banter, Cuchulainn persists “in that sweet country (Emer’s breasts)” he will “rest my (his) weapon” however he loses this banter and performs the tasks that she demands of him.

Several female characters in the Tain possess supernatural powers. Macha, who “screamed out that all who heard that scream would suffer from the same pangs for five days and four nights in their times of greatest difficulty” was the first female introduced in the Tain with supernatural powers. Due to the might of the curse she places on the men of Ulster, none of these men were able to assist Cuchulainn against Medb and Aillil for many days. The most dominant supernatural power the females in the Tain possess in the power of prophecy. When Medb encounters Fedelm “a woman poet of Connacht”, Fedelm foretells the future of Medb’s army. “I see it crimson, I see it red” (61). Fedelm has the power to see the great victories of Cuchulainn and heeds warning to Medb and her army. Morrigan, the goddess of war and the primary supernatural female character in the Tain, is able to change form and deceive Cuchlainn several times throughout the story. She goes to Cuchulainn as “a young woman of noble figure…wrapped in garments of many colours” and tells him she loves him. Due to his refusal of her, she later on changes into three different animals to attack him “the shape of an eel and trip you in the ford”, “the shape of a grey she-wolf, to stampede the beasts into the ford against you”, and “the shape of a hornless red heifer and lead the cattle-herd to trample you in the waters” (1). Morrigan also appears throughout the story as a crow foretelling of what battles and bloodshed is to come.

Traditionally in medieval literature, women were portrayed as inferior beings if portrayed at all however the female characters in the Tain are shown to have great strength, whether this strength was unintentional or intentionally used for evil.

Both the Mongol and Roman Empires had great impacts on world history in other countries. The Mongol Empire lasted from 17 AD to 168 AD, and stretched from East Asia, all the way to East Europe. The Roman Empire was from 1 BC until 476 AD, and it stretched from West Europe and into parts of Africa, East Europe, and the Middle East.

The Roman Empire was a very important piece of world history. The Romans traded with Africa, India, China, and other parts of Europe. From Egypt the got grain, and from other parts in Africa they got ivory, gold, and lions. From India, the Romans received cotton, spices, and precious stones. Along the Silk Road, most of this trade with far nations was accomplished. The Romans adapted columns, statues, an alphabet, and geometry from Greece. However, Rome also had many ideas and achievements that were original to them. Some of these ideas included “innocent until proven guilty,” “trial by jury,” evidence, and a republic system. The language spoken in Ancient Rome was Latin, which eventually led to the development of Spanish, French, Romanian, Italian, and Portuguese. Some original forms of architecture to Rome were arches, the dome, concrete, temples, roads, aqueducts, and bridges. The main religion of the Roman Empire was Christianity.

The Mongol Empire, much like the Roman Empire, had a huge impact on world history. They adapted foods, tools, inventions, and ideas on their various trade routes. The Mongol Empire was the largest Empire at its height; it stretched across all of Asia, and parts of Europe. They had windmills and gunpowder, once they went westward from China. Papermaking went to the Middle East from China, and crops and trees went from the Middle East to China in exchange. Another achievement of the Mongol warriors, was the ability to shoot their bow and arrows backward, allowing for effective reverse fire. This gave them a strong advantage during battle. The main religions of the Mongol Empire were Buddhism and Taoism.

In conclusion, the empire that was more effective on world history, was the Roman Empire. This was so for many reasons. One main reason, is that Christianity is one of the major religions of the world, even though Buddhism is also, Christianity has a larger population. Also, the architecture of buildings in the Roman Empire was a lot stronger, and also some of it was adapted from other cultures, unlike that of the Mongols. The Mongols did not adapt things as much as the Romans did. The law of the Romans is also a lot like that of the United States, which is arguably the most advanced and structured government in the world.

Ernest Hemingway was born July 1, 18 in Oak Park, Illinois. He was the second of six children four sisters and one brother. He referred to his home town as a place with “wide lawns and narrow minds.” His father taught him how to fish and hunt, which exposed him to the serenity of nature. His mother taught him the finer points of music which helped him shared in his first wife Hadley’s interest in the piano. In High School he enjoyed working on the newspaper called the Trapeze. His first job was a reporter for the Kansas City Star. When he turned eighteen he enlisted for the army and was turned down due to poor eyesight in his left eye, but he volunteered to be a Red Cross ambulance driver. His first day in Milan a munitions factory exploded and he hade to carry the remains to a makeshift morgue. A few weeks later in Schio he was hit with shrapnel from an Austrian mortar. He received the Italian Silver Medal for Valor for “...generous assistance to the Italian soldier more seriously wounded by the same explosion...” During his hospitalization in Milan he hade an affair with his nurse Agnes von Kurowsky. A year after returning from Italy he met Hadley Richardson while staying with a friend. Soon after in September 11 they got married and in November Hemingway accepted a job for the Toronto Daily Star as its European corespondent. They moved to Paris on December , 11. The first two years in Paris were extensive for Hemingway as a journalist, covering the Geneva Conference in April of 1, The Greco-Turkish War in October, The Luassane Conference in November and the post war convention in the Ruhr Valley in early 1. While in Paris he made new friends such as Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Sylvia Beach, James Joyce, Max Eastman, Lincoln Steffens and Wyndahm Lewis. His wife Hadley became pregnant so they moved to Toronto until John Hadley Nicanor Hemingway was born October 10, 1 and by January 14 they moved back to Paris. Ezra Pound in recommending Hemingway to Ford Maddox said “...He’s an experienced journalist. He writes very good verse and he’s the finest prose stylist in the world.” Ford let Hemingway edit his fledgling magazine the Transatlantic Review. The first version of in our time was published by William Bird in 14 it contained only the vignettes found as interchapters in the American version published by Boni & Liveright in 15 which also contained ten short stories as well. In 16 he came out with The Sun Also Rises. In 17 came Men without Women and he divorced his first wife Hadley. He married Pauline Pfeiffer later that year and in 18 they moved to Key West, Florida. Hemingway’s reaction to Key West was “It’s the best place I have ever been anytime, anywhere, flowers, tamarind trees, coconut palms...Got tight last night on absinthe and did knife tricks.” June 8, 18 Pauline gave birth to Patrick. This same year he received word of his father’s suicide and he developed diabetes. In 1 he finished and published A Farewell to Arms. In 11 Pauline gave birth to Gregory and in 1 he published his Spanish bullfighting dissertation, Death in the Afternoon. In 1 he returned to fiction with Winner Take Nothing a volume of short stories. That same summer his family and their friend Charles Thompson journeyed to Africa. In 15 he published Green Hills of Africa a pseudo non-fictional account of his safari. Edmund Wislon said of this “he has produced what must be the only book ever written which makes Africa and its animals seem dull.” When the Spanish Civil War broke out in 17 Hemingway fell in love with Martha Gelhorn and married her in November 140. In the Summer of 140 he hade finished the novel For Whom the Bell Tolls after divorcing Pauline and moving with Martha to a large house outside of Havana, Cuba. Sinclair Lewis wrote that the novel was “the American book published during the three years past whish was most likely to survive, to be know fifty years from now, or possibly a hundred... it might just possibly be a masterpiece, a classic...” The book won the novel of the year by the Pulitzer Prize committee. In 141 he covered the Chinese-Japanese war for PM Magazine. In 144 he went to London to write articles for RAF about World War II when he is injured in a car crash. While in London he fell in love with Mary Welsh. For all intent purposes his third marriage was over and his fourth just beginning, he wrote himself “Funny how it should take one war to start a woman in your damn heart and another to finish her. Bad luck.” In that same year, late August 144, he joins with General Buck Lanham long enough to watch the American forces cross into Germany. He also published a short story titled Across the River and into the Trees in 150. During this time he hade and affair with an Italian woman named Adriana Ivancich. In September 15 The Old Man and the Sea appeared in Life magazine, also it won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 15. In January 154 Hemingway and Mary boarded a plane headed for Africa that made a crash landing to avoid a flock of ducks. Then after a boat ride across Lake Victoria they took another flight that barley made it off the ground before crashing and catching fire, Hemingway used his head as a battering ram to escape through the front exit. In Jeffrey Meyers biography of Hemingway he lists his various injuries “His skull was fractured, two discs of his spine were cracked, his right arm and shoulder were dislocated, his liver, right kidney and spleen were ruptured, his sphincter muscle was paralyzed by compressed vertebrae on the iliac nerve, his arms, face and head were burned by the flames of the plane, his vision and hearing were impaired...” On October 8, 154 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 15 he wrote and article for Life magazine entitled “The Dangerous Summer.” In 160 Hemingway and Mary moved to Ketchum, Idaho. Fall of that year he was admitted to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He received according to Jefferey Meyers “between 11 to 15 shock treatments that instead of helping him most certainly hastened his demise.” On the morning of July , 161 Hemingway rose , selected a shotgun from his closet in the basement, went upstairs to a spot near the entrance-way of the house and shot himself in the head. It was a little more than two weeks until his sixty-second birthday.

Imagine you and your friends are out camping in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico, when you see a large metallic disc zoom over your heads. You gaze in awe because you realize you have just seen a UFO. This incident could have happened to you if you would have been in the desert of New Mexico in 147. There has been speculation for the last fifty years about paranormal activity at Area 51, near Roswell, New Mexico. Do aliens exist? Since the beginning of recorded history, there have been reports of unexplained phenomenon. Only the government, Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF), and the 50th Bomb Squad know if the incident at Roswell really took place. The furthest destination man has traveled is to the moon, which means anyone traveling from a distant planet to earth must be a far superior race.

During the first week of July 147 something crashed outside of Roswell, New Mexico (Wilson 1). News broke on July 8th 147, when a press release from Roswell Army Air Force Base in New Mexico had become a reality when the Intelligence Office of the 50th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force was able to gain possession of a disc, which had in fact landed on a ranch near Roswell (Randals 8).

There were many witness accounts of the Roswell Incident. One of the most important was William W. Brazel, also known as Mac who was a rancher near Roswell. In the summer of 147, he and some of his neighbors rode out to check on his sheep. On their way Mac noticed a shallow trench several hundred feet long and metal debris scattered throughout the area (Alien Autopsy 1). He took several pieces of the wreckage into the Roswell office of Chaves County to show the sheriff, who later contacted the U.S. Army Air Force (Pflock ).

Major Jesse Marcel is perhaps one of the most credible and convincing witness to what happened at Roswell. His following testimony cannot be dismissed, owing to his background in aviation and his military history

There was all kinds of stuff - small beams about three eights or a half inch square with some sort of hieroglyphics on them that nobody could decipher. These looked something like balsa wood, and were of about the same weight, except that they were of about the same weight, except that they were not wood at all. They were very hard, although flexible, and would not burn. There was a great deal of unusual parchment-like substance which was brown in color and extremely strong, and a great number of small pieces of a metal like tinfoil, except that it wasnt tinfoil.Marcel added that one piece of metal foil, two feet long and a foot wide, was so durable that it could not be dented with a sledgehammer, despite its being incredibly light. Marcel was absolutely convinced that the material had nothing to do with a weather balloon or a radar target.(Dean )

Oliver Wendall Henderson had top secret security clearance while stationed at Roswell, and confirmed that he was the pilot that flew the Roswell material to Wright Field. He said he had seen the wreckage and alien bodies (Maccabee 4). To help substantiate Henderson’s accounting, there was a teletype message at 617 p.m. on July 8th 147 by the local FBI agent, that said “The material is being transported to Wright Field by special plane for examination.” (Maccabee 4).

After a story which aired on Unsolved Mysteries, Mary Ann Gardner called in with a story that was told to her by a cancer patient at St. Petersburg Community hospital. The patients said she was a friend of someone who was out rock hunting with a group, when they came upon an unknown craft with bodies laying beside it (Carey ).

Another source, Iris Foster, owner of a local caf near Taos, NM came forward after the Unsolved Mystery segment. She remembered a man named Cactus Jack whose real name was Larry Campbell who had talked about being “out there” when the spaceship came down and he had seen a “round object” and “dead alien bodies” (Carey 1).

Witness Jim Rugsdale, who was camping at an area north of Roswell with his girlfriend, saw something flash overhead and crash near them. They found the wreck, which was a crushed saucer, and with their flashlights spotted several little corpses. When returning to the sight the next morning to get a better look, they had to leave because the military was already there (Netropolitan 4).

Frank Kantman who was with the military when he found a craft shaped like a plane, and through a cracked section saw little bodies (Netropolitan ).

On the night of July 4th, William Woody, who lived East of Roswell said he was outside with his father when he saw a magnificent object plunge to the ground. A few days later he and his father tried to locate the crash site, but were stopped by military personnel, who had the area blocked off (Alien Autopsy ).

There is much speculation that the government tried to cover up the actual facts involving Roswell. It was reported by Dubose that McMullen ordered Ramey to squash the story about the UFO in order to “get the press off our back”. Ramey then invented the explanation that the material found in the desert near Roswell was a weather balloon, and the special flight to transport the wreckage to Wright Field had been cancelled (Maccabee ). We know this is not true because in our eye-witness accounts, Oliver Wendall Henderson stated he flew the materials himself to Wright Field for analysis.

Major Jesse Marcel stated that he had taken some of the debris from the wreckage to General Ramey’s office at Carswell Air Force Base in Texas on the afternoon of July 8, 147. He placed the material on Ramey’s desk; he then said he wanted to see the location in which it was found, so they went to the map room down the hall. When they returned the debris had been replaced with a weather balloon which was now spread on the floor (Alien Autopsy 4).

In the summer of 14 the Air Force admitted that Ramey lied. They then said the material was from a top secret balloon project intended to detect Soviet nuclear explosions “Project Mogul”. This failed to convince UFO investigators since the Mogul balloon devices are almost like the weather balloons. Brigadier General Thomas Dubose, Chief of Staff of the eighth Air Force said, “It was a cover story, the whole balloon part of it. That was the part of the story to give to the public and news.”(Alien Autopsy 4). On the 50th anniversary on June 4th,17 the Air Force published another explanation for the witness accounts of small dead aliens. The Air Force proposed they were actually parachute test dummies used to test high altitude escape mechanisms. This explanation was also rejected by the UFO investigators because the first such test dummies were not dropped until six years after the Roswell incident (Maccabee 4).

In the 170’s UFO researchers, Stanton Friedman, and William L. Moore decided to look back into the Roswell case. They concluded that there was a cover up and the Air Force had recovered the remains of a flying saucer. They also claimed that the bodies of the alien’s crew had been discovered (Pfock ).

According to Dan Schmitt and Kevin Randale the military had been watching an unidentified flying object on radar for four days in southern New Mexico, and on the night of July 4th , 147, radar indicated the UFO was down about thirty to forty miles Northeast of Roswell (Alien Autopsy ).

According to the New Mexico radio station KAFL they were threatened by Washington to not run the story about the UFO crash, and if they did their license would be revoked (Randals ).

There is a good deal of controversy over whether alien bodies were discovered at the site of the wreckage. For instance, Dennis Ballard of Roswell, New Mexico who was just starting his life as a “country funeral director, when after having to drive an injured airman to the base as part of his job, wondered into a top-secret military operation. Air Force doctors were examining “humanoids”. It became hard for him to escape that conclusion; because an air Force nurse, who also was caught up in the operation, told him everything she had seen and even drew pictures of the aliens. When he tried to contact her again he discovered she had disappeared (Pflock ).

Glenn Dennis, a mortician working in Roswell in 147 stated that “In July he was asked about child sized coffins and information for embalming bodies” (Netropolitan ).

Frank Kaufmann, now eight-seven, was a civilian employee at the Roswell Base in 147. He saw two of five dead aliens at the crash. “They were very good looking people, ash colored faces, about 5’5” inches tall with eyes a little more pronounced.” (Levine ).

A therapist by the name of John Carpenter interviewed Gerald Anderson by using hypnosis. By using this method he helped him recover buried memories of the incident. Gerald told him that they had all gone up to a large silver disc and there were three bodies, two not moving, and one having a hard time breathing while a fourth was giving them aid (Netropolitan ).

If there was a wrecked alien space craft and alien bodies what did the government do with them? The pilot of a B- was told he was taking little alien bodies to the FTD (Foreign Technology Division) at Wright Patterson. The aliens were child sized with big eyes, large heads, and no body hair (Randals ).

Was there a cover up by the government of Roswell and other UFO sightings? Thirty years after the Roswell incident, Jesse Marcel, retired from active duty in the Air Force, told UFO investigators that while the general was telling the press that it was a weather balloon devise, “The real material was flown by a special flight to Wright Field.” If it was a material from a weather balloon, everyone would be able to recognize it and therefore it would not need to be sent to Wright Field for analysis and identification (Maccabee ).

Immediately following the first publicized reports of flying saucers, the press asked the Air Force if there was some new secret air craft project that could account for the saucer reports. The Air Force said “no”(Maccabee 4)!

The government said that the “things that look like UFO’s” were really super-secret balloons to monitor Soviet atomic tests. Case closed, but not to thousands of people who see no reason to believe anything that the Air Force tells them (Schorr 1).

Roswell Daily Record’s lead addition on July 8, 147 was a press release that reported the recovery of a “flying saucer”. Two weeks before a Washington state pilot related an account of a close encounter with nine flying saucers. Within hours of the incident the military changed the story (Kilday 17).

In conclusion there are many unanswered questions concerning the Roswell incident and the cover-up by the government in all things relating to extraterrestrials. Why would the government feel a need to keep this secret from the nation? Are they afraid of this kind of knowledge would cause mass hysteria? In the late 140’s the Air Force covered up the fact that they had enough evidence based on sightings alone to prove the existence of flying saucers. They also covered up the fact that the objects were extraterrestrial and in fact a person in military intelligence could, under orders lie to cover up evidence (Maccabee 18). This type of conspiracy raises all manner of ethical questions. To keep from society the existence of an alien artifact would be a crime against science (Randals 1).

There are many opinions that support both sides of the question, “Is there extraterrestrial life out there?” Everyone must form their own judgment based on the facts that have been uncovered by the many scientists and ufologists who have studied in depth this topic. Anything you believe to be real is as real as you believe it to be!

The Shape of Things was a story about a girl named Evelyn and a guy named

Adam whose life was changed by one girl in an art museum. The title accurately

describe this production because Evelyn deceives Adam into changing everything

about himself for her. There were only four actors in this play and very few props.

With what little was used, the production turned out very well. This was a story of

deception between two young adults.

In my opinion, Evelyn was the best of all four actors. She seemed like she

actually got into her part more than the rest. She showed much more emotion than

Adam. You could almost tell that she had something scheming on her mind just in the

way she talked. Adams role was more of a pushover type character and was easily

given away in his feeble, quiet voice. I could not stand listening to Philip. He had such

a high pitched, whinning voice. I felt sorry for Jenny who had to listen to him all the

time. Jenny just had the sweet and innocent voice going on. She had a more neutral

role and didnt really take sides with anyone. She was dating Philip, but used to have a

crush on Adam.

Adam liked Evelyn so much that anything she said he was convinced that it

was a good idea. The thing that was so clever about how Evelyn convinced Adam to

do anything for her by getting him to eat out of her hand. She then would just say

something that she thought would better Adam and he would do it. First, she thought

that he should change his appearance. She started with him getting a haircut, then

changing out his glasses into contacts, she changed the way he dresses, and finally

talked him into getting a nose job. Second, she told him to pick her or his two best

friends, Philip and Jenny. He picked her.

Throughout the story, all I heard him do was complain either to Adam about

why he was changing everything about himself for this girl that came out of nowhere

or Jenny fooling around with Adam. Jenny and Adam used to have a thing which

brought some drama into the story. They began to like each other and their true

eventually came out. They messed around a couple times, but little did they know that

Evelyn and Philip had kissed.

Evelyns thesis project was very clever, but a harsh trick to play on a person.

She was convinced that she could completely change everything about a person. She

was right. She never flat out told Adam to do anything. She just implied what she

wanted and he would jump right on it. Of course, Adam couldnt say no to this

wonderful that was secretly just using him for a quick A. Adam eventually asked

her to marry him. At her theis presentation, she explained that she used him for her

project and turned down his marriage proposal. This made me feel sorry for the guy.

He stuck his heart out for this girl and she stomped all over it.

The props used were a few tables, a rope barrier, and a art stand with a picture

of Adam. The tables were moved around for each scene to create a different

atmosphere or room. The tables were stood upright and it wasnt clear what they were

supposed to represent. They were used mostly for benches, but at one point a table was

used for a bed. Evelyn and Adam had their way with each other upon this table. This

was probably the highlight of the play because Evelyn got in her underwear. She was

pretty hot. The rope barrier was used in front of a statue in the beginning of the play.

Evelyn wanted to paint a penis on the statue to make it natural again. Some art

gooroos wanted to cover up the statues penis. During Evelyn thesis presentation at the

end of the show, she used the art stand and picture of Adam to show what her project

was on.

The lighting fit very well with the different scenes. During the scene in the bed,

the lights were red, yellow, and orange. The warm colors helped show what was going

on and gave a heated atmosphere. Most of the play was in cool colors to show that

Evelyn was trying to be convincing and sincere with Adam. It made the audience feel

like she actually cared about him. During the thesis presentation, there was a little of

both. The cool colors showed success in her presentation, but then changed to warm

to show the anger and hurt that Adam felt after he realized what she had used him for.

There was something different about this play that stood out. Before the show

actually started, there were two guys in a shirt and tie that just walked around on stage

throughout the opening scene. The opening scene took place in an art museum. I

suppose the two men were guards or tour guides or someone that works at a museum.

This was a great play in my opinion. I enjoyed how this girl just popped into

this guys life and took over. It was very clever how she convinced him to change

everything about himself for this girl he had just met. The best part was that she was

using him the whole time and he didnt even know it. He fell right into her trap. I liked

this play so much I wanted to see it a second time.
