The Joy Luck Club is a novel written by Amy Tan, follows four women from different regions in China, and the differences with their “Americanized” daughters. At a time when children believe that they have many differences from their parents, this story shows how the situations that occur are closely related to each other. Each of the different families is related in a way.

The Joy Luck Club relates to the Chinese game, Mahjong. This game was begun by one mother who with neighbors play together weekly. When times were hard they began to play this little game with each other to brighten the sad, war-ridden evenings. All of the mothers in the story have had distressing journeys and migrated from China to their homes in San Francisco. There they meet one another and form a union. However, the suffering of these mothers is not spoken about in their homes because of their shame and embarrassment, thus the daughters often know the truth.

In San Francisco the mothers set their daughters up in comparison to each other because they feel that they must always compete. Because of the manipulation of point of view we are able to see the daughters’ side and find that she doesn’t enjoy much of this and even one daughter ruins it for her mother and shames her in front of her mother’s friend. Other times in the novel the main characters never heed their mothers’ warnings and fall into an abyss. Thus the women learn how they themselves must learn to accept that their mothers’ are right.

These stories are about Chinese-American characters, but the universal theme can be applied to all people. Anyone with children can relate to the belief that the hopes of one generation can shatter or inspire the hopes of the next generation
