In the story, The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is an example of determination and hope. He had is unlucky days but he was bound to succeed and had the strength for prayer which allowed hope to help him and lead him to be a success. He waited patiently and he was determined that he would catch a fish and that is what happened.

To me Santiago succeeded because he allowed hope to guide him in the right direction. For example, Santiago prayed for the death of the fish. "Blessed the Virgin, pray for this fish. Wonderful though he is." (pg.65) Santiago prayed to the Virgin to pray for the death of the fish. He hoped powerfully for the death so much he prayed to the Virgin. Furthermore, Santiago wished that he could show the fish how strong he was. He also wished he could be like the fish, strong. "I wish I could show him what sort of man I am." (pg.64) "I wish I was the fish he thought, with everything he has against only my will and my intelligence. (pg.64) Santiago had wished to be something else. Why? He was a wonderful thing. He hoped to have the strength of the fish that fought against his will and intelligence.
