John Fitzgerald Kennedy became the 5th president of the United States in 161. At the age of forty-three, he was the youngest man ever elected president. He was also the first Roman Catholic ever elected to the oval office. Rich, handsome, charming, elegant, articulate, and from a well known family, Kennedy became a natural recipiant of admiration both in the United States and abroad. His assassination in Dallas, Texas on November , 16 resulted in public outrage and widespread mourning throughout the nation and the World. Kennedys term in office was too short to allow history to pass fair and acurate judgement on his accomplishments as president. Their is little doubt, however, that the image and philosphy, he brought to the oval office not only influenced the generation he governed, but also continues to influence todays generation and politics in general. Indeed, Camelot, the name given to the idyllic time during Kennedys presidency, is not a dead mythology but a living idealogy that continues in American society today. John Fitzgerald Kennedy (he latest gained the nick name Jack) was born on May , 117, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was Joseph & Rose Kennedys second son. His father was a multimillionaire businessman, who had became a bank president at the age of 5, and made his fortune through investments in stocks, importing, shipbuilding, and moviemaking. Joe Kennedys political experince was limited to being appointed the first chairman of the newly created Securities and Exchange Commission (14-15) by president Franklin D. Roosevelt, and having served as the head of the U.S. Maritime Commission (17), as well as being the U.S. ambassador to Great Britain (17-140). Even though Joseph Kennedy never ran for an elected office himself, he and his wife had large ambitions for their nine children. John Kennedy was groomed for a career in politics from an early age. Growing up Kennedy was small for his age and suffered through several childhood diseases. As a child he was quite and shy, a far cry from his personality traits in his later years. During his childhood his older brother Joe helped and protected him, and served as a role model for young Jack. From an early age the Kennedy children were taught by their parents that the United States had been good to the Kennedys and that whatever the U.S. did for them must be returned by some service to the country. Jack took this idea to heart. Later it became the basis for a famous line from his inaguration speach in which Kennedy said Ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country. In school Kennedy excelled in history and english, but was a poor speller and struggled in math and science. Kennedys sixth grade teacher noted his humor and competitive spirit. Kennedy graduated from Choate High School in Wallingford Connecticut and briefly attended Princeton University before enrolling in Harvard in 16. While attending Harvard Kennedy wrote a brilliant honors thesis on British Foreign policies in the 10s called Why England Slept, which was later published. He graduated in 140 and was voted most likely to suceed by his classmates. In 141 Kennedy entered the the U.S. Navy shortly before the United States entered World War II. Following Pearl Harbor he applied for sea duty and became the commander of PT 10, a Navy torpedo boat. In 14, while on active duty of the Pacific, the boat he commanded was rammed and sunk by the Japanese. In an act of heroism, Kennedy rescued and lead his crew ashore, but in doing so aggravated an old back injury and contracted malaria. He was discharged from the Navy in 145. Kennedy returned home to Boston from the war with a citation for valor to began persuit of the political career his parents had envisioned for him. In 146, the rich and ambitious young veteran joined the Democratic party and successfully ran for a Boston-based seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was reelected to the seat in 148 and 150. As a congressman Kennedy supported social legislation that benefited his working-class constituents. It was during his tenure in congress that he began to advocate a strong anti-communist foreign policy, which he continued to promote for the remainer of his life. During this time Kennedy was especially critical of what he considered a weak policy against communism, especially communist China, by president Truman. Kennedy become restless in the House and in 15 ran for the U.S. Senate. He faced a strong opponent in the form of republican incumbent senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr.. Although the republican presidental candidate, Dwight Eisenhower, won in Massachusetts as well as the country as a whole, Kennedy demonstrated his remarkable voter appeal by defeating Lodge. One year later, on September 1, 15, Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier. The couple had three children Caroline Bouvier, John Fitzgerald Jr., and a second son who died in infancy. Kennedy proved to be a relatively ineffectual senator. During parts of 154 and 155 he was seriously ill with back ailments and for that reason was unable to play an important role in government. Kennedys critics observed that he made no effort to ooppos the anti-civil-libertarian excesses of Sen. Joesph McCarthy. His friends and staff later argued that he would have voted to censure McCarthy if he had not been hospitalized at the time. During his sickness Kennedy wrote a book of biographical studies of American political heroes. It was published in 156 under the title Profiles in Courage and won a Pulitzer Prize for biography in 157. Like his earlier book on British foreign policy, the book revealed Kennedys admiration and respect for forceful politcal figures. In 156 Kennedy, with his familys input, once again decided it was time to further his political ambitions. He bid unsuccessfully for the Democratic vice-presidential nomination. Following the setback, he set his sights on the presidency, especially following his reelection to the senate in 158. He continued during these years to support a strong anti-communist foreign policy. Regarding domestic issues Kennedy was a cautious liberal, backing a compromised civil rights bill in 157. He also devoted special efforts to labor legislation. By the time of the 160 presidential election Kennedy was only one of many Democrats with aspiriations for the partys presidential nomination. During the democratic race Kennedy once again showed his political shrewdness by putting together a well-financed, highly organized campaign and won the nomination on the first ballot. In another politically clever move, as a Roman Catholic from the North, he selected Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas as his running mate in order to stregthen his weak support in the South. Kennedy faced a strong challenge from republican nominee and sitting vice-president Richard Nixon but was able to preform well in a series of television debates against Nixon, using poised and vigorous performances to win over voters. He promised tougher defense policies and progressive health, housing, and civil rights programs. He also promised to lead the nation out of economic stagnation through his New Frontier plan. Kennedy won the election by a narrow margin of 11,000 votes out of 68,800,000 cast, but had to accept reduced Democratic majorities in Congress. In 161, his first year in office, Kennedy experienced a series of political setbacks due to a series of adverse international developments. He inherited a secret plan to overthrow Fidel Castro in Cuba from the previous administration of Dwight Eisenhower. Kennedy approved an invasion of Cuba in April by refugees acting with the help of the U.S. agencies. The quick and decisive failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion resulted in personal embarrassment for Kennedy. Later in the spring Kennedy pondered sending U.S. troops into Laos, which was being threatened by Communist insurgents. He flew to Vienna in June to meet with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. They agreed on a neutralized Laos, but Kennedy was threathen by Khrushchevs statement that West Berlin was a bone in my throat. When the Soviet Union built a wall between the eastern and western parts of Berlin in August, Kennedy responded by sending 1,500 U.S. troops to Berlin. Cold war tensions increased when the Soviet Union sent the first man into space in April and resumed atmospheric nuclear tests in September. In the fall of 16 rumors began to circulate that nuclear-armed Soviet missiles were being set up in Cuba. In October, U.S. intelligence confirmed that middle-range missiles were being installed. After a week of secret meetings with his advisers, the president announced his plan to place a naval blockade around Cuba to prevent the arrival of more missiles. He demanded that the Soviet Union dismantle and remove the missiles that had been detected. On October 8 Khrushchev gave in to Kennedys demands and the president removed the blockade and reassured the Soviet Union that U.S. would not invade Cuba. The Soviet retreat was considered a personal and political victory for Kennedy. Kennedy further improved his foreign affairs record in 16, which would turn out to be his final year in office. In June he gave an innovative foreign policy speech calling for an end to the cold war. The U.S. and Soviet Union agreed to establish a hot line to allow communication in times of crisis. In July Kennedy worked out a nuclear test-ban treaty with the Soviet Union and Great Britain. Another Kennedy project, The Alliance for Progress, a program of aid for Latin America, was also a popular success. These accomplishments, however, were overshadowsed by the worsening situation in South Vietnam, where Kennedy had placed 17,000 U.S. military advisers to help an unstable regime fight a growing Communist movement. Kennedys wit and charm made him very popular in the U.S. as well as abroad, but it did not help him greatly with a republican majority congress. Due to the lack of democratic support in congress most of his domestic policies stalled on Capital Hill. Every president must endure a gap between what he would like and what is possible, Kennedy once remarked at a press conference. When the civil rights movement began to stregthen in 16-6 he began to actively promote civil rights legislation. He also proposed a tax cut to stimulate the economy. However, at the time of his assassination these and other programs including federal aid to education and Medicare remained tied up in congress. Kennedys successor, Lyndon Johnson, would go on to succussfully push the legislation through a more democrat friendly congress in 164-65. He had better luck with executive actions as he was able to successfully force steel companies into lowering prices in April 16 and to encourage the race to send an astronaut to the moon. Kennedy responded strongly against efforts to prevent school integration in the South. In September 16, he appealed for compliance with the law when U.S. Supreme Court ordered the University of Mississippi to accept a black student. Kennedy ordered ,000 federal troops to the campus to control riots and ensure that the order was followed. In 16 Kennedy threatened federal force to help win partial desegregation of public accommodations in Birmingham, Alabama, and of classrooms in Alabama public schools. Kennedy also asked Congress for legislation to desegregate public facilities and give the Justice Department the authority to bring school integration suits. Most of his proposals ultimately enacted, following his death, in the Civil Rights Act of 164. In the fall of 16 Kennedy began to plan his strategy for reelection. He flew around the country campaigning, using the improvements in relations between the U.S. and Soviet Union as his strongest selling point, to generally favorable public responses. On November , at 10 PM CST, Kennedy was shot in the head and spin by a sniper while riding in an open limousine through Dallas, Texas. Following the incided he was rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where efforts to revive him failed. A commission headed by Chief Justice Earl Warren concluded in September 164 that the lone assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was captured shortly following the assassination and killed two days later by Jack Ruby. The state funeral of President Kennedy was watched on television by millions around the world. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery where his grave is next to an internal flame in his memory. Despite the conclusion of the commission many questions and conspiracy theories still surround Kennedys death. In the history of our country no other president has captured the imaginations and hearts of Americans more so than John F. Kennedy. His charisma and flare for life in the lime light were able to far outshine his shortcomings and failures as both a person and a president. Kennedys impact on U.S. history is still felt today. Many politicans are still trying to recreate Camelot, the mystical philosphy that made John Kennedy one of the most liked and popular presidents in history. The pursuit to recreate Camelot and later the fear of a second coming of Camelot overcame one of Kennedys cheif rivals, Richard Nixon. Nixon, like everyone else in American society at the time, was fooled into buying into the idea of John Kennedy, handsome man of morals and principle, ideal family man, the personifcation of the American dream. While much of this may be true, today history shows us that Kennedy too had his shortcomings. Regardless of what the turth may be, the legacy of John Kennedy and Camelot live on today and have solidified J.F.K. as one of the most storied figures in U.S. History. Word Count 57

Television is one of the strongest methods of advertising. It is one of the most popular and common mediums in South Africa. The television advertising campaign for the cellular network-Vodacom has a series of adverts that form a relative image in the mind of the consumer. This is because they use the same characters in each of their adverts as well as keep a common theme, for example, humor with all the series of adverts.

The advert that we have chosen on television has been manipulated to suit the rugby world cup. Since Vodacom is one of the leading sponsors of the South African Springboks, they used an advert that was previously used to advertise the free emergency number that the Vodacom network entitles its subscriber to. The advert takes place in a rugby stadium where an eventful match is taking place. There is a couple, commonly known to the 'Voda-world' as the couple that is always getting into trouble leaving the 'hero' with the Vodacom cellular phone to bail them out. In this advert the crowd goes wild with excitement as one of the rugby players scores touch goal. The ignorant girlfriend, however, aims an orange at him and it hits him on the head. This causes him to get really angry.

The crowd moves away from them and the couple is left alone to face the wrath of the furious rugby player. It is at this point where everyone takes out his or her cellular phones and dials the emergency number that is free from the Vodacom network. However, as stated earlier on, the rugby world cup is on, the advert omits the original purpose of the advert i.e. to advertise the free emergency number and now focuses on the product's role on the South African rugby team. However, although the purpose of the advert has been modified, the original purpose is not totally neglected. It does exist, however, the advert will not gain attention for the emergency number but rather on the World Cup.

Bothma gives us two ways in which we can assess certain styles that an advert compromises of, these are what he call 'creative appeals' (Bothma 00; 66-67). These advertising approaches are divided into two categories i.e. rational and emotional or subjective. By applying these two approaches to the advert we have chosen, we will be able to filter through the advert and observe certain advertising techniques.

The first approach that is the rational approach focuses mainly on the advertising objectives for the product as well as certain facts i.e. quality traits of the product itself. According to Bothma, the message will have information about the properties of a product (Bothma 00; 66). Like Bothma, I believe this approach to be more successful because this approach plays on the imagination as well as the desires of human nature. By doing this, the advertisement will draw in larger audiences as well as reach the desired goals for the consumers

Bothma further describes many approaches under this category. However, the one most relevant to the Vodacom advert is the Product Popularity Approach and this is the approach that we will be discussing in further detail. According to this approach, the advertiser plays on the mind of the consumer by taking into account factors such as their personal preferences and human nature characteristics. By doing this, they are able to play on human emotion such as greed, desire and the need to fit in to society to get their desired goal.

In the Vodacom advert, the rugby game is used because at the moment, rugby is a popular sport in South Africa, not to mention, the rugby set provides a link to the sponsorship of the world cup. This scene allows the viewer to identify with the set and the characters in it. The main scene in the advert that gives us insight to why this advert falls under this particular category is when everyone calls the emergency number. This provides us with an idea of trend setting schemes in order for us to properly analyze the advertisement. The fact that everyone uses the cellular network Vodacom and everyone looks confident that this is the 'in thing' in terms of cellular providers creates an image in the mind of the viewer to this effect. The viewer would want to be part of this trend, as he/she will want to feel part of the bigger picture. The advertiser knows this and plays on this fact, thus he hopes to gain the desired objective that he has set for the outcome of the advert.

Now, let us take a look at the objective or Creative appeal. This kind of appeal deals with a specific target audience in mind. It takes into consideration certain demographics such as age, sex, and personal preferences and tries to lure audience's in. it enables consumers to identify with the chosen characteristics that the advert portrays. Bothma believes that this approach is more successful and will obtain better results than the rational approach (Bothma 00; 66). Like Bothma, I believe this to be true because this approach plays on the imagination as well as the desired of human nature. By doing this, the advertisement will draw in larger audiences and consumers. Like the other appeal, there are many different approaches under this category; however, we will only be discussing those that are relevant to the advert.

The most important approach that is directly related to this advert is the humorous approach. This is what the advertisers used in the Vodacom advertisement. According to Bothma, this kind of approach is exciting initially to viewers but soon enough, it is bound to bore the audiences soon enough. However, I beg to differ, the series of Vodacom adverts provides a unique and insightful way of looking at the properties of the product. These adverts have been going on for years and have been successful ever since they first began.

The next approach is referred to as the Slogans and jingles approach. This approach creates familiarity between the viewer, the advert and the product. The most common of all Vodacom adverts are the familiar sound of the man who always rescues them with his phone call. His famous saying whilst talking on the phone requesting help is 'Yebo-Gogo' or 'Hello-Vodacom'. This creates a programmed image in the mind of the viewer enabling us to recite these lines on and off television times.

This leads us to the fact that the Vodacom advertisement that we are currently analyzing is actually one of several that seem to follow up on each other. The advertising agency that dealt with Vodacom was ingenious when it decided to design follow up advertisements that consumers could identify with. The infamous yebo gogo captions and the consistent characters the old man with the cellphone, the very ignorant middle aged man who thinks he knows and can do everything, and a recent addition his blondish type girlfriend make the vodacom advertisements something that consumers want to watch. In fact, some people actually wait in anticipation to see what these characters will be up to next.

Now the question that we as marketing students have to ask is what are the marketing objectives behind this type of advertising? What do the advertisers plan to achieve and why is their approach to advertising so different from the rest?

Marketing objectives are essentially implemented before the actual advertisement is created. They define "the goals of an advertising campaign or exercise." (Bothma, 00 7) They are seen as the guidelines for the whole marketing strategy that goes into the creation of an advertisement. The objectives are "part of the broader marketing communication objectives". (Bothma, 00 4) The basic questions that need to be attended to are what the essential message to be delivered is; what audience (target market) are you dealing with; what do you expect to happen (the effect of the advertising campaign); and what kind of strategy are you going to implement in order to evaluate the success of the advertisement. (Bothma, 00 44)

In terms of the advertisement that we are discussing it seems that the essential message that Vodacom want to throw across is awareness of their services as a cellular network provider, in this case the emergency call number that can be dialled for free whenever or wherever there is an emergency. Hence, the advertisements always deal with the middle-aged man falling into some sort of dangerous and harmful situation from which only an emergency call can save him. Here, we see that he is being carried away on a stretcher that was called in by the older man on his cellphone. Other information the advertising agency would want to portray would be that of the quick response of the vodacom emergency service. This is shown through the fact that the emergency unit was sent to the rugby field which is where the incident occurred. Therefore, no time was wasted portraying the quick response of the vodacom emergency service. All of this relates to the objective of creating awareness.

This particular advertisement however, is also linked to a public relations campaign, in the form of a sponsorship. The caption at the end of the advertisement states that the consumer must not miss the upcoming Rugby World Cup. Hence, Vodacom is sponsoring the Rugby World Cup, in an attempt to emphasize their brand image. Thus, one of their objectives would be image advertising, in order "to reinforce a favourable image of [their cellular network]." (Bothma, 00 46) The Rugby World Cup's mass media coverage would be advantageous to Vodacom's advertising needs and objectives.

The other objective that I can pick up is that the advertising agency intended to enforce the idea of the vodacom service image into the mind of the consumer. In the same respect, the advertiser is inadvertently reminding the customers to purchase this product. This is done through the function of frequency which is defined as "The number of times, on average, that the members of the target audience are exposed to (see, read or hear) the advertiser's message in the media vehicle in a given time period." (Bothma, 00 145) Therefore, if you observe the frequency of exposure of the Vodacom advertisements then it is simple to see that this service provider's objectives are to remind the consumer about the product and its benefits. This is as a result of the existence of three cellular networks in South Africa, all competing to "keep their own products and brands foremost in the minds of their customers." (Bothma, 00 46) One must remember that the main aim of any organization is to increase purchase. Therefore, the main aim of Vodacom's advertising campaign would be to increase the number of consumers who will subscribe to them.

Another advertising objective deals with the type of audience that the advertisement will appeal to, in other words, the target market. In this particular case Vodacom is attempting to attract the attention of the national rugby team supporters and all other South Africans who will be watching and following the Rugby World Cup, trying to imprint the image into the consumers mind so that when he or she think World Cup Rugby, then he or she inadvertently thinks Vodacom. The target market also includes those consumers who own cellphones. Additionally it seems that the old man in the advertisement is extremely techno savvy, thereby implying that anyone, no matter what age, gender or creed, can utilize the services offered by Vodacom.

The intended effects of the advertising strategy would be to reach a greater clientele this is subsequently the most significant factor in advertising. This is clearly as a result of the fact that advertising on television has a greater reach than most other media institutions. Also, to enable those who are already subscribed to the service provider to reap the benefits of services offered, in this case, Vodacom's emergency service. Lastly, they would want consumers to acknowledge the fact that Vodacom does indeed support South African sports, thereby increasing the popularity of their brand image.

The evaluation of the success of the advertising campaign can be measured through the number of brand switches that occur before, during and after the Rugby World Cup. If there is an increase in Vodacom subscribers then the goal of the advertiser's objectives would have been achieved. Through these types of actions we can observe that the advertisers see advertising as an important strategy in the marketing communications mix. They would not be so enthusiastic to spend money on television advertising if they saw it as an insignificant part of the marketing communication process.

We are fairly certain that the advertisers who deal with Vodacom believe that evoking emotion in a consumer is what constitutes a 'good' advertisement. This is as a result of the fact that most of Vodacom's advertisements contain either a comic element to it or as, in the baby advertisement, a sense of longing to 'seize the moment'. We can see that they take particular pride in creating advertisements that can be followed up on. Not only with the yebo gogo advertisements but also with the live for the moment advertisements. The other factor is of course that an advertisement must be able to bring in more customers. One will know whether an advertisement is a good one once the evaluation has been done.

It is fairly obvious that television advertising involves an extremely large amount of planning. Without the proper methods an organization would literally be disadvantaged. For example, if the advertising campaign is not successful then the organization would have lost money and there is a danger that their image would be tainted as well. Therefore, it is vital that all aspects are taken into account, i.e. the budget, the objectives, etc.

Contract An agreement that is enforceable in a court of law

A contract is legally binding only when it contains certain factors

Capacity The legal capability of entering into an agreement; some individuals, such as minors, and mentally incompetent or intoxicated persons, are not seen in law as having the capacity to enter into a contract.

Legality The purpose must be neither criminal nor against the public good.

Consensus There must be complete agreement, or consensus, among the participants.

Intention The intent must be that legally enforceable obligations will result from the agreement.

Consideration All parties must offer a consideration, which is the price paid for a promise, something of value of promised or paid that is taken to indicate that the person has considered the agreement and consents to be bound by it.

Capacity includes minors, mentally incompetent people and individuals who are intoxicated.

Age of Majority The age at which a person is recognized as an adult according to the law of his or her province.

Minor A person who has not attained the age of majority according to the law of his or her province, and therefore is not legally an adult.

• Each province and territory in Canada sets its age of majority. A young person who is legally a minor in one province may be considered an adult in another.

• In general, the courts are unlikely to enforce a contract against a minor.

• It doesn't matter if a person appears to be over the age of majority and the other party to the contract honestly believes that the young person is an adult. This is true even when the minor has deliberately lied to or misled the adult.

• If a contract is cancelled by the court, the minor is entitled to have any money paid refunded, but must return the goods purchased.

• Parents of a minor are not liable unless they had previously authorized the contract. If a parent co-signs a contract, or persuades the other party that the parents have accepted responsibility for it, they can be held liable.

Repudiation (anticipatory breach) an indication by a party that he or she will not go through with the agreement as promised.

Minors' Contracts for Necessities

Contracts that involve matters necessary for the minors' survival can be enforced by the courts. Necessities are those things which are needed for everyday (food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care, job training, and other programs).

Necessities The basic goods and services required to function in society

• Minors must fulfill any contracts they make for necessities.

• A minor only has to pay a reasonable price for the necessities. The court will reduce the price if it is not a fair one.

• It is up to the other party to prove that the contract is for necessities or, if job related, that it is beneficial to the minor.

• Loans to minors are not recoverable unless they are used for necessities.

Mentally Incompetent and Intoxicated Persons

Contract law gives special protection to those who suffer from mental impairment when they are entered into an agreement. The impairment may be due to a variety of causes, including

• Physical disease

• Mental illness

• Drug use

• Alcohol use

If someone was under these causes they must immediately try to fix the problem

A contract made by such a person can be voided by the courts, as long as the following rules apply

• The contract is not one for necessities.

• The impairment was sufficiently serious that the individual was unable to understand the nature and consequence of what was going on.

• The other party had actual knowledge, or was put on notice, of the impairment at the time the contract was entered into.

• The agreement was cancelled within a reasonable time by the person deemed incompetent or drunk. A "reasonable time" means the individual must cancel the agreement promptly after the return to mental competence or sobriety.

Legality

Courts will not enforce illegal contracts.

Illegal Contracts Contracts which cannot be enforced because they are contrary to legislation or public policy.

• The agreement involves breaking a civil or criminal statute. This is known as statutory illegality.

• The agreement is against public policy and violates the public interest

Examples of statutory illegality Hitman successfully carrying out contract and if employer doesn't pay, he cannot sue him in court.

• Statutory illegality can arise from two different situations those that are criminal, and those that are wrong only because they are prohibited by civil statutes or regulations.

• Those contracts that are illegal only because they are prohibited by statute may be enforced if there was no intention to violate the statute.

• The court may find that there was no intention to violate the statute if at the time of the performance the illegality was cured.

Contracts Against Public Policy

Contracts that are against public policy, or the good of the community, are unenforceable.

Example A person cannot sell his business and open up a new one right across the street the next day.

Goodwill The value of the good name, reputation, and connection of a business.

• In general, any contract clause that limits a person's right to earn a living is presumed to be against public policy, and therefore unenforceable.

• This presumption can be overturned if the restraint clause can be proved to be reasonable. To be considered reasonable it must a) be necessary to protect the business b) contain restrictions on time, area, and subject matter that are no greater than are needed to protect the business c) not be against the interests of the public.

• The person to be restrained must possess some special skill, or knowledge of trade secrets or special techniques. Alternatively, the individual must represent major potential competition to the business sold or to the employment the individual has left.

Consensus

Before any contract is finalized, there must be a general agreement, or consensus, between the parties involved. There can be several stages in the process before consensus is reached

• Bargaining or negotiating

• Offer

• Counter offer (this stage does not always take place)

• Acceptance

Bargaining An Invitation To Treat

Invitation To Treat The technical legal term for the invitation to engage in the bargaining process.

There is no duty imposed upon people that they should act in good faith. Each party is permitted to try to get the best deal possible for itself.

• An offer must contain all of the terms that will be included in the contract, so that the other party need merely say, "I accept."

• The essential terms necessary for a contract will vary with the circumstances but they normally are the parties, the price, the terms of payment, and the subject matter.

• If a term indicates that the party making the offer does not intend to be bound, but may want to negotiate further, there is no offer, but an invitation to treat.

Withdrawing an Offer

An offer can be withdrawn or revoked anytime before acceptance, if there is no consideration paid for keeping the offer open.

• Even though an offer is made, it can be withdrawn, or revoked, at any time before it is actually accepted.

• Even if an offer contains a term that states it will remain open till a certain time and date, it can still be revoked provided that a) the offer is withdrawn before it has been accepted, b) the other party is informed that the offer is no longer valid. • The party who asked for the condition must act in good faith in trying to fulfill it.

• All parties must co-operate in attempting to fulfill conditions.

• Conditions often require the consent of both parties in order to be waived, unless the contract specifies otherwise.

Counter Offer The rejection of one offer and the proposal of a new one.

• When an offer is rejected it is put to an end.

• When a counter-offer if made, it ends the previous offer.

• An acceptance that includes any changes in terms is a counter-offer.

Negative Option Marketing

When a firm sends you its product and tells you that you're stuck with it unless you notify us.

• The Parties can agree upon the mode of communication, such as the mail, fax, or personal delivery.

• Where there is no agreement between the parties, the courts may find that it was reasonable to use the mail in the circumstances.

• If the court finds that it is reasonable to use the mail. A) acceptance of the offer occurs at the time that the letter is put in the mailbox (assuming that the postage address is correct). B) if the letter is lost or delayed, performance is still fixed at the time the letter was posted.

• The mailbox rules apply only to acceptance of offers. They do not apply to withdrawal of offers.

The Formation Of A Contract

1. Invitation to Treat (seller lists business for sale)

. Offer (purchaser signs standard form offer)

. Counter Offer (seller reviews terms, changes if necessary, signs and returns to vendor); this can happen a number of times

4. Acceptance (Purchaser signs counter offer)

Cooling-Off Periods A specified time after a contract is made during which a buyer may terminate the contract by giving written notice to the seller.

Intention

The parties to an enforceable contract must have intended from the start of the process that legal obligations would result from their agreement. Parties can also specify if their contracts if they want their contracts to be enforced in the courts.

• Courts assume that parties to an agreement intend to be bound by it.

• The test to decide whether the parties intended to be legally bound is from the point of view of the promise (the person who receives the promise).

• Individuals can state in the agreement that they do not intend to be legally bound, and therefore no contract or enforceable agreement has been created.

• In family and social agreements, the court assumes that the parties do not intend to be legally bound.

• Exaggeration has been accepted by the courts as an indication that a person does not intend to legally bound by the statement. An example of this is advertising where statements are made such as" the best deal in Canada"

Covenants terms of agreement

Consideration is given in exchange for a promise. The consideration must be given bye the promise to the person who makes the promise (the promisor). Consideration can be anything of value in the eyes of the law (amount does not matter)

Gratious Promise A promise for which no consideration is given.

• Consideration is anything of value given in exchange for the promise sought to be enforced.

• The courts will not inquire into the adequacy of consideration. It need not be fair or equivalent to the value received.

Shrink-Wrap Rule contract terms relating to a shrink-wrapped product, often including a limitation-of-liability which limits or excludes the manufacturer's liability for damages that may occur from the use of the product.

Past Consideration The consideration has already been given

Click Wrap Rule Contract terms which are accepted when the user clicks an appropriate icon on a web site document.

• Past consideration is not consideration for later terms in a contract.

• A promise to continue to perform a contract is not consideration.

Agreements Enforceable Without Consideration

Agreements under seal

Promissory Estoppel a remedy against a person who made a promise without giving any consideration for it, often used when a creditor waives strict compliance with payment dates and notifies the debtor in default for not making timely payments.

• Promissory estoppel has three factors. It is a promise

• A) Which the maker should realize would induce the hearer to rely upon it.

• B) On which the hearer does actually rely, and

• C) That reliance is to the hearer's detriment.

ABOUT THE BOOK

"Most Wanted, Profiles of Terror" is the biography of six militant who through their respective organization hold out the maximum threat to India. The book has been divided into seven parts, according to its table of content. Well known counter terrorism expert K.P.S.Gill's introduction gives an insightful overview while the other authors have profiled leaders of six important militant organization to provide rich, often frightening details of their skills and expertise. These six, so called, terrorists are "most wanted" not only because of their past activities but also because of the threat they continue to hold out.

Apart from giving the background of the militant attitude, the writers have also provided a glimpse of their modus operandi, their beliefs, aims and motives and how they rouse people to follow their course of jihad. K.P.S. Gill, in his introduction, describe heavily on his experience of tackling militancy in Punjab to maintain that it is not possible to get the militants to the discussion without first defeating them on the ground.

At the very first, in the list is the man President Bush desperately wants dead or alive, Osama bin Laden. Rahimullah Yususzai, a Pakistani journalist, charts Osama's life from his childhood in Saudi Arabia. Furious by the presence of infidel' Americans in his country, he affirms to take revenge on them. Later, he also targets Israel and India to his hit list. Hounded out of his homeland, he first settled in Sudan and then in Afghanistan where he found in the Taliban a perfect ally to fulfill his plans. The US action in Afghanistan and the fall of the Taliban did not change him a bit. He is believed to have escaped the US bombings and from his unidentified hideout, he calls upon Muslims all over the world to carry on his jihad. He reasons that the anti-Us bombings took place because of his calls and warnings as he said

"If the instigation for jihad against the Americans and Israelis to liberate the Al-Aqsa mosque and Holy Ka'aba is considered a crime, let history be witness that I am a criminal."

When the Government of India released Maulana Masood Azhar, the chief of the Jaish-e-Mohammed or the Army of the prophet, and two others in exchange for the passengers of IC-814, hijacked from Katmandu to Kandahar in December 1, they did not realize (in the words of Harinder Baweja) that he was a live bomb that had been ticking all the six years that he was behind bars. A man who introduces jihadi feelings into a revolution, which had initially started as a battle for independence. He was happy playing role of journalist through Sada-I-Mujahid until the demolition of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya on 6 Dec 1.Thus turning his attention towards India and Kashmir. He was skilled orator and so started a department of motivation. To visit India his purpose was to aid the Kashmiri Mujahideen in their struggle against Hindu India and to boost the morale of freedom fighters. Today, his Jaish-e-Mohammad is one of the most dreaded terrorist outfits in Kashmir. Now, under US pressure, Gen Pervez Musharraf has put him in detention, but this detention is rather symbolic. He is able to contact anyone outside, and continues to direct the activities of his Jaish.

For Prof Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, chief of Lashkar-e-Toiba, records Amir Mir, another Pakistani journalist, killing is a 'pious' man's obligation, and the professor considers himself a very 'pious' man. He is an academician and is well known for his guerrilla attacks in Kashmir and attack on Red Fort in New Delhi in 000. His outfit has to account for more than 15000 lives in Kashmir, including those of a large number of Lashkar-e-Toiba militants. Since its launch in 11, the Lashkar has set up six military training camps in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, 500 offices in Pakistan and two dozen launching camps along the Line of Control. Professor's past has been bloody, with a cause for revenge as thirty six members of his family had been murdered during the partition in 147.His two main targets are India and Israel since they are main enemies of Islam and Pakistan. Lashkar has been claiming responsibility for various acts of terrorism not only in Kashmir but also in India. However, Professor believes in one voice that is God, which he says authoritatively,

"This jihad has been commanded by Allah Almighty and no one can stop it."

The Indian authorities as one of their most wanted men have marked Mohammad Yusuf Shah, alias Syed Salahuddin, Supreme Commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, from Kashmir. His followers call him Pir sahib and believe that he possesses supernatural powers, records Zafar Meraj. Having great love for independence and Pakistan, he began to through speeches and conducted pro-Pakistan seminars, at early stages of his life. Besides serving the jamaat, his mission was to preach, whether traveling, at home, outside, public places or even in jail. The authorities termed his preaching anti-national activities as he also worked with pro-freedom organizations. The Hizbul Mujahideen was set up in 18 by merging different jehadi groups. Today, Salahuddin commands his boys from his base in Azad Kashmir with the help of a highly modern communication network and Hizb is considered the most powerful and probably the only original Kashmiri militant group .His life is seen as one which withstood great changes, as spending 45 years in cities, doing imamant (holding the office of an imam) enjoying public speaking, teaching students and leading a family life he became leader of Hizb. He began living in jungles and deserted places, cut off from the world, from worldly comforts and family ties. Indian soldiers set various traps to capture Salahudin but he eluded them each time. Amongst the most wanted in the list of twenty, submitted to Pakistan by Indians government, Salahudin is a virtual prisoner.

Indian journalist Subir Bhaumik plan the career of railway porter-turned-militant, Paresh Barua who claims to be the Commander-in-Chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). Even though his violent movement has almost petered out, he still fancies himself, as a modern-day Lachit Barphukan, who defeated the Mughal army in 167.He, is considered violent and armed. It is also said that he lives on money obtained from robbery or extortion and can even handle and produce weapons. He is said to have obtained arms and guerrilla training under NSCN, KIA, and ISI of Pakistan. He ordered and approved kidnappings, killings and extortion, band dacoity and other violent activities by ULFA .His passion for Assam's freedom have not waned and he is convinced that it is not a wasted dream. The struggle has just begun, he maintains.

Velupilai Prabhakaran, the Chief of LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam), is a man who ordered the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and later acknowledged it as a mistake, is a kind of religious group who has trained men and women of the LTTE to the extent that they renounce their family ties, friends and marital pleasures. Velupilai Prabhakaran never initiates an assassination without worshipping Kali, the Mother Goddess who combines in her the creative and destructive attributes of the Supreme Power. His followers are totally devoted to the idea of a Tamil state in Sri Lanka and have abiding loyalty to Prabhakaran. R. Rajagopalan records that the LTTE has carried out at least five times the number of suicide attacks than all other similar organizations put together. Therefore peace in Sri Lanka has no chance until the Tamils are counted and valued.

Other then the biographies two annexure that is the additional material or document is also given in the book related to some excerpts from Omer Sheikh and Masood Azhar's interrogation reports.

CRITICAL ANALSIS

Critically speaking, The "Profiles of Terror" assumes great significance and has been carried out with intelligence and great sensitivity by the authors. The profiles produce a picture of complex realities of terrorism. The book helps understand pattern of mobilization for terrorist activities and also what happens in democratic societies when they are confronted with violence of this type. More over this book also helps to understand the unusual demand of terrorist leaders and movement and the pattern of support they make.

At present there is little awareness of the terrorist mass mobilization. Therefore there is confusion over the nature, which is regarded in great crisis and mistakenly come to regard them as terrorist, instead of what they actually are.

Through the read of the profile of this book, we come to make judgment our self whether the, so-called, terrorist carry out crime or is it the way Allah has commanded them for their Jihad.

The authors of this book "Profiles O Terror" have shown a just attitude to their writing. They have been totally unbiased on portraying the real situation. The text is easy to read with expression that stands out for both brevity and clarity. However sometimes one needs to refer back to a certain section when it fits in with the overall plot. The situations are well described and helps to keep readers absorbed in the text, but sometimes like in Subir Bhaumik's writing, the detail seems not to be revealed, therefore with one's finger inadvertently trying to flip the page.

"Profiles of Terror" is a type of book that is good for basic read, in order to know and understand the terrorist's, their aims and purposes, behind their acts, which never stops to inform you more, till the last page is turned. More over the best part in the book are the pictures of the most wanted terrorist, which have been given on the very start of each profile, making an image in our minds of the person we are reading.

"Historical Dictionary of Terrorism" by Sean K Anders, Stephen Sloan, Bhashyam Kasturi is a similar book dealing with the profiles of European terrorists published in 00, as given information and detail biography of the terrorist or their organizations.

Other books have also been published individually, related to the most wanted terrorist, for example book on Osama Bin Laden giving it the name "Bin Laden - Behind the Mask of the Terrorist" by Adam Robinson.

Custom Essays on Zanarkan

Government

Gracegoth

There was once a world just like ours. But this world

was connected. There were no wars, and no boundaries.

Because people all worked together, the society became very

advanced. Inventions were flying in faster than ever before.

Machines were being built, and they began taking over jobs

usually done by humans. People began relying more and more

on machines to get by, until one day...

It began as a peaceful day off the coast of Gracegoth. A

small town called Morrowind was following the daily

routine, men were at work, operating machines while the

women took care of the little ones before they headed off to

school. A young boy was playing on the beach when he saw

the ocean began to swell. The hill in the ocean was getting

bigger and bigger. All of a sudden, a beast rose out of the

water. It was said to cover the sky, no less than a mile long. It

destroyed the town, and began it's destruction. It seemed to

shoot out missiles with massive destruction, and with a single

breath, it wiped out entire cities. Gracegoth's great armies

stood in front of it, and shot everything in there arsenal. But

more of the planet was destroyed than what was done by the

beast. In less than a week, it had destroyed the world.

Nothing was left, every city and town had been

destroyed, nothing could stop the monster. Only groups of

people where left, and they tried to plot the beast's

destruction, but it hunted them down. It's power was

unstoppable, and it left only a few survivors. One of them

was the Great Sayiaman. He was said to be seven feet tall, and

had the strength of ten men, and the wisdom of five

generations. He led the rest of the survivors to try and hide

from the monster, but it found them, and spoke to him. To this

day, no one knows how the beast communicated with the Great

Sayiaman. But it did, and it said not in words, but in his mind " I

have left a few, enough to start over. I am called Sin, and I

have come and cleansed the earth of the machines and all who

worship them." And that is it. The Great and wise Sayiaman led

the rest of planet Gracegoth's survivors, and started over.

Many things happened since then. All machines were

banned, and people feared to even speak of it. The world's

name was changed to Zanarkan, which means "free from sin" in

their language. As the generations passed, people became

more religious. The god Yevon was discovered, and many

people devoted their life to him. Sin still attacked, but it

became rare, and less devastating. Then Yevon offered a way

to defeat Sin.

It wasn't permanent, but everyone was willing to hear

Yevon out. Yevon explained that there are 7 temples left on

Zanarkan. They are ancient ruins of Gracegoth, the time

before Sin. In each temple, there is a spirit. If someone was

able to gather the power from each of these 7 spirits, they

would contain the seven elements needed to destroy Sin. This

someone had to pass the trials of the 8th element. If someone

passes these trials, you would become a Summoner. Only a

Summoner can gather these 7 elements. So one man, Goku,

stood up and went through the trials. He brought his body

guards Yamcha and Tien to make the pilgrimage to the 7

temples.

As they did this, they realized that Sin knew of this plan,

and monsters were sent to protect the 7 temples. Somehow,

they made the trip and gathered all seven elements, and faced

Sin where it all started, the ancient city Morrowind, where Sin

first attacked. Goku did not yet realize, but he had to give his

life in order to stop sin. Yevon showed him how to use the

elements, and Goku did. The 7 elements gathered into Goku,

who was the eighth element, and destroyed Sin. The period

that followed was called the Calm. It lasted 7 years right

up to the date, before Sin appeared again.

Here we are now, more than 00 years after the first

Summoner Goku destroyed Sin for the first time, and over 800

years after Sin first appeared. The world no longer contains

machines, and cities are a limited size. Each city has a Yevon

4

place of worship, and one Summoner. Every 7 years, all the

Summoners compete to be the next great savior, and fulfill

their destiny as the 8th element.

Not every city has a Summoner, but every city has to elect

one person to go through the trials and try to become one. No

matter if the Calm has just started, every city must have a

Summoner or a priest (one that has not yet passed the trials)

at all times. These Summoners must always have at least two

Guardians at all times, chosen by the Summoner.

All laws are passed by the Elders. They are a collection

of 1 people who make all decisions. When one member dies or

retires, the people elect another member. These members are

appointed by three different parties. They are the Patriots,

the Hyrules, and the Dragons. Each party appoints one

person for each election that takes place.

That's it, there is no House of legislature or anything,

the board members keep themselves in line. For them to pass a

law, a majority of the members has to approve of it. They vote

once, while one member hosts the situation. So this way, 11

vote, never leaving a tie. The decisions are final, and can be

challenged after a years time. Each Summoner has to appoint

a mayor for his or her city. With issues dealing with the city, it

is pretty much up to the mayor.

The Elders deal with things like Sin and global issues.

The laws have it set up so that each city is only allowed to

have 5,000 citizens residing. Cities are spread out, so this

5

forces the economy to rely on its city. So though you have a

choice of job, you are better off doing something you are good

at. Keeping these smaller cities keeps more order. If a

company is owned, most of the time it is only local. If not, it

has to be careful not to overlap the monopoly laws.

Dealing with laws, if any city law directly or partially is

opposed to the national law, than it can be overturned in a

case. If a man is charged with breaking a law in a city, and is

charged, than the man can bring it to the Elders, and, if

chosen, it is then in their hands. The Elders do not answer to

anyone, but usually leave alot of smaller issues in the hands

of the cities.

Here are the Amendments passed by the original 1

Elders, of which included the Great Sayaiman

No law shall be passed that is seemingly dealing only

with peoples morals.

Machines can never be used or created. If one is found,

then it must be reported to the nearest political figure, then

bought up to the Elders.

Every city must vote on a priest, and the priest must try

to pass the 8th element trials once a year, until accomplishing

the rank of Summoner.

The Summoner must have at least two Guardians at a

time, chosen by the Summoner.

The Summoner must use good judgment, and appoint a

mayor for his or her city.

6

No one shall enter the temples except Guardians and

Summoners.

The 7 temples are to only be entered 5 years before Sin's

next appearance.

A city must have a Summoner or priest at all times.

If an Elder dies or retires, a new one must be gathered by

the parties, and voted in 6 months time.

A person has the right to speak, write, or display his or

her thoughts in none physical ways.

No one is to attack Sin, except the eight element.

You must clean up any mess left from dogs or cats in

public places.

A company can never have more than 5,000 employees in

its branch.

All decisions by the Elders are final.

All must abide by the ten commandments set by Yevon.

This list contains over 1,000 laws that can be tweaked and

overturned by the Council. If an issue is more than the Elders

can bare, a Council Meeting is in effect. This means that all

Mayors, Summoners, and their Guardians from all of the 1,546

cities in Zanarkan must travel to the Corinth Tower, where

all representatives and the Elders will discuss matters.

Dealing with the economy, the Elders are very strict

about currency. The Elders decide on how much Zeni will be

dispersed into Zanarkan. If more Zeni is needed, a mayor may

confront the Council. Taxes are collected once a year. An

7

amount of 500 Zeni is collected from each house. Depending

on how many non-working people live in the house, the taxes

are brought down. For every woman and child, 10% is

deducted from their due. There are no exceptions, all taxes

must be paid. This forces people to work, but the amount is

low enough to not pressure people to take drastic measures

to make the pay.

Each city is forced to have at least ten law enforcers at

a time. They are paid by the Tax house. The Tax house gathers

the tax money, and balances the money. They distribute

paychecks to Summoners, Guardians, Mayors, and law

enforcers. The Tax house also uses the money to recover

from disasters such as Sin attacking.

Back to the law enforcers, they are highly trained. The

Elders began forcing them to be combat compatible ever since

the group Al-Queda was formed. They are a group of outlaws

who do not believe in Yevon. They don't believe that machines

have anything to do with Sin. They mostly live on ship in the

sea. They go around collecting ancient machines, and building

new ones. Because of their knowledge of the machines, they

are considered highly dangerous.

The law requires that you not assist a member of

Al-Queda in any way. And if you spot one, than you must report

a law enforcer immediately. Law enforcers are required to

try and bring in the Al-Queda alive. If the Al-Queda puts up a

resistance, and a law enforcer feels that his or her life is

8

endangered, than a law enforcer may take down a member of

the Al-Queda.

Currently there are ten agents that are trying to

infiltrate the lawless group Al-Queda. These agents are part

of the group Fox Hound. They are the most highly trained

group in Zanarkan. They are approved by at least one the

Elders. But since the Al have not yet harmed another person,

it does bring up controversy about there death warrants. But

they break one of the most serious laws that can be broken.

Currently, the Calm has been going on for more than 6

years. The Summoners have all begun their pilgrimages. The

one that everyone is keeping there eye on is the 7 year old

Yuna. She is the daughter of the Legendary Majjin Buu. Majjin

Buu was 48 years old when he bore his first child, Yuna. Only

two months later did Buu finish his pilgrimage, and destroy Sin.

Yuna is now the center of attention. She even met with the 1

Elders, who wished her luck before she set off.

Usually, Sin is not killed as soon as he appears. He can,

and will attack anything from land to water. During this time,

it is custumary to visit a church and give alms to Yevon at

least twice a week. You cannot stay outside after eight o'

clock, and you cannot travel outside a city alone. No one is

allowed to say the word "machine" at all during the time of

Sin.

The 7 Temples do not contain elemential spirits until 4

months before Sin appears. On this date, all Summoners are

required to attend the World's Fair, hosted in Saulino at the

center of the Zanarkan. It is a big celebration before the

Summoners set off. It doesn't matter what order the Temples

are visited, so not every Summoner will start at the same

temple. When it is all finished, no one, not even Guardians are

allowed to step into the ancient city of Morrowind except for

the eighth element.

This was stated by the founding fathers of Zanarkan,

100 years after the Great Sayiaman died. When Zanarkan

first started, there was no council of Elders. There was only

one ruler, the emperor. The emperor were the exact

decendants of the Great Sayiaman. In these times, Zanarkan

was a communist world. When a child was born, they used

ancient techniques to figure out his or her main talent. The

child was then educated in that field, and eventually grew up

working for society. They had no currency back then, and

everyone was given an equal house, with equal amounts of

food and furniture for their house.

But it was soon discovered that society was not

functioning properly. Needed occupants in fields were left

empty. There became shortages for some jobs, and over

employed for other areas. Thats when Zanarkan was brought

out of communism. Soon enough though, the load of running a

whole planet became too much for one man. So the title of

emperor was banished, and the 1 Elders came to be. The first

1 members wrote a constitution

10

We are the first 1 Elders of Zanarkan. Our job is to

insure the freedom and happiness of the people of Zanarkan.

The nation of Zanarkan shall never be seperated. We are a

union of people. We are all equal, and shall never be denied

our human rights.

The's are the rights to live, to be free, to have justice,

and the right to be happy. Sin created what we see and live

today. We will always do what is in our power to stop the pain

and suffering Sin causes, even if the unorthodox methods are

only temporary.

As a law enforcer or Guardian, we promise to protect

the live or lives of others, with our life if necessary. We will

be all that we can be, and assist in life.

As a person, we promise to contribute to our society, and

pay our full taxes when due. We promise not to interfere with

anything dealing with sin. We will show the upmost respect

for Summoners and Guardians, and we will respect the laws

of Mayors and the Elders.

As a Mayor of a City, we promise to reflect the

leadership of the Elders. We deal with problems exactly as

an Elder would do. The laws that we add will only protect

citizens, and help them better their lives.

And finally, as a Summoner, we promise to try to the best

of our ability to become an 8th element. We will use all in our

power to pass the trials, and complete our pilgrimage. We

11

will face Sin with courage, and save the lives of everyone in

Zanarkan. We understand that our duty is of the upmost

importance, and we will accomplish it with Pride and Integrity.

Abide by this constitution, and Zanarkan will live on

forever under Yevon's blessful watch. Your rights shall

never be broken.

Rights and Responsibilities, this term can be taken into several aspects, it could refer to nations coming together to defend the rights of their people, or factions forming out of responsibility to further what they believe in, or even in some cases, a brave individual, standing up against all odds, realizing his or her responsibility to improve the situation and rights of themselves and of their people. In the 150s and 160s a movement caught the attention of the United States, and threw our normally stable country into upheaval. Opinions clashed across the nation, racist whites, accustomed to the "normalcy" of treating blacks as inferior were against a group looking for change; a group of liberal and compassionate whites, joined with African-American men and women with their minds set on becoming equal, or in some cases the superiors. Although many men and women contributed to this fight for equality or superiority, almost none had the influential ability of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These two men were without a doubt the driving force behind their respective organizations and beliefs. They were in many ways very different, from how they lived, to what they actually believed in and wanted, but in many ways, they both had the same major goal to improve the current situation, and gain more RIGHTS for their people. Martin Luther King was recognized around the world, in America, Europe, and Asia he was supported for his courageous efforts, and incredible oratorical ability. Malcolm X was a major religious figure to most militant blacks in the 150s and 160s, his words reached thousands by way of his incredible speeches and lectures given at mosques and in crowded halls all over the United States, like King, Malcolm X had and uncanny ability to passionately give speeches. Throughout history, many different movements have been made, anti-war in the Vietnam War era as well as today, anti-imperialism as seen with Gandhi in India, and the aforementioned Civil Rights movement of the 50s and 60s; and throughout all of these movements people have stepped up to stand for what they believe in. In the Civil Rights movement, two of the most memorable and important figures to do this were Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., through protests such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, or being the spokesperson for an entire religion in the United States, these two men, through their own means not only established a foundation for others to show bravery and fight for equality on, but they also paid the ultimate price, their beliefs ended up costing them their lives.

Segregation on public buses had started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana however after it was stopped there, the new main spot for racism on buses was in Montgomery, Alabama, and in most of the rest of the South, segregation on buses was legal. Whites would sit in the front of the bus, with a "no man's land" in the middle seats of the bus, and then the blacks could sit in the back of the bus, the whole time a moveable barrier was pushed back, giving the blacks even less room. And in the so-called "no man's land" if a white felt like sitting down in a row where all blacks were sitting, then the entire row of blacks would be forced to stand up, and the one white could sit down. However segregation was the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the horrible way the blacks were treated on the buses, the bus drivers in many cases were racist; they would call the blacks "nigger", "black ape", or "black cow". Even if the front seats were empty, a black person couldn't sit in them, even if the rest of the bus was full. Another common happening was for the bus driver to take the fare from a black at the front of a bus tell them to board on the back of the bus, and when they got there, the driver would speed away, with the already paid fare. Very few times, people had tried to stand up to the extreme racism that took place on these buses. Claudette Colvin was arrested in 155 for sitting in the front of the bus, however, black leaders found this to be the wrong time to use an example to get rid of segregation; Colvin was not their "perfect victim" because she was pregnant at the age of 15. Even before then, in 14, Jo Ann Robinson sat in the front of an empty bus, but ran from the bus crying after the driver screamed at her. Also, Vernon Johns, a black man, tried to get other blacks to leave a bus after being forced to give up his seat; he failed, and was told by another black "You ought to know better". The black leaders could not find their "poster child" that all changed on December 1st, 155. A seamstress from Montgomery, Alabama named Rosa Parks stepped onto the bus, she had a spotless criminal record when she walked on, and when she walked off she would not. Parks was going home after a long day of work, her feet were tired, and when she boarded the bus, she had no intention of having to stand the whole time, she took a seat and the bus driver rode away. Soon after a white man would board the bus, he walked over to Parks and told her to move, she refused, and the bus driver, James F. Blake, who had evicted Parks from the bus in 145, called the police and she was arrested for not giving up her seat. E.D. Nixon found out what had happened, and called Martin Luther King Jr., he informed him of the situation, and also planted the idea of a boycott in King's mind. King met the next day with Nixon, Reverend Ralph Abernathy, and Jo Ann Robinson to talk about how to handle the situation, they decided upon a boycott. On December 4th, a meeting was to be held for the blacks of Montgomery to attend, 40,000 handbills were passed out. On December 4th, King delivered a speech that he would go on to call "The most decisive speech of my life", he convinced the people of Montgomery that the bus boycott was the logical solution to their problems of segregation. King rolled the idea in his mind and thought that if 60% of the blacks stayed off of the buses, then it would be a successful boycott, however, the next day his wife called him over to the window, and he saw empty buses, rolling down the streets. The boycott was almost a total success on the first day, 0% of blacks stayed off of the buses. The boycott continued into the next year, people were using mules, carpools, and going by foot to wherever they had to go. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and E.D. Nixon's homes were bombed during the boycott, however, they continued to push the movement. Whites made many attempts to stop the boycott. The "Get Tough" policy was enacted, allowing police to stop cars for no reason. The officers would harass carpool drivers for going one mile per hour faster than the allowed speed limit, they would also pull them over for going "too slow". The whites also would start rumors questioning the dignity of the leaders, at one point they claimed that King had purchased a new Buick for his wife, along with a Cadillac, and both of these were false. Also, important whites would tell the protest leaders that if King weren't in charge, things could change overnight. King offered his resignation because of these claims, but that was denied by other members of the group, saying that they would follow him to the end. Whites also falsely claimed a meeting had been held that called the boycott to an end to try to get blacks on the bus. King and other leaders new that the boycott would break soon, so they offered suggestions for change on the bus, such as polite bus drivers, first come-first serve seating, and black drivers on black routes. The city denied these offerings, so the blacks looked to the Federal Court to sue for full integration, the Federal Court ruled in favor of them -1. The city appealed, and the case made it to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court upheld the decision, and declared bus segregation unconstitutional, the boycott was over. The Bus Boycott is known as the start of the Civil Rights movement. Not only did it integrate the buses in one of the most racist parts of the nation, but it also gave hope to the blacks that they could accomplish full equality, while at the same time giving Martin Luther King national recognition.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most known Civil Rights leaders around the world. His efforts in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and his speeches have been used as examples of true human good. He was the president of the Montgomery Improvements Agency (MIA) and was one of the founding ministers and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). As mentioned before, he was a part of the committee that decided on the Montgomery Bus Boycott that gained integration on the buses in Montgomery and at the end of the boycott, he was the first person to board a Montgomery bus under the new integration. His non-violent Gandhi-like methods of resistance gained him support from different countries around the world, such as Japan, Switzerland, and England. Back in America however, he was harassed and attacked often. He would receive obscene phone calls between thirty and forty times a day. His house was bombed during the bus boycott, however he kept his calm and kept hundreds of blacks from rioting afterwards. The white police officers who were trying to keep them back would later say that King saved their lives. Through all of this, he still led the great 16 March on Washington, which ended with his famous "I Have a dream" speech. Between 50,000 and 400,000 people, black and white were in the audience outside of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. to hear that speech. King's major ideas for the Civil Rights movement were in the direction of becoming equal socially and economically, he did a lot of focusing on education. He also looked to help the black people believe that they were not inferior to the white man. Many had been so oppressed by the idea of inferiority, that they actually believed that they were lesser beings than the whites, they were not nearly educated as well as whites, and they were not in political situations in which they could have any control over material resources. His aforementioned oratorical abilities gained him worldwide recognition, he is still known today is one of the most passionate speakers in history. His work in gaining equality for blacks won him a Nobel Prize and now his birthday is even celebrated in the form of a national day of service. On April 4th, 168 King was looking to assist a garbage worker's strike in Memphis. He was shot and killed, James Earl Ray was later apprehended, convicted, and sentenced to years in prison for killing King. King is seen as one of the fathers of civil rights by setting the tone of the movement with the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and following through on his quest for equality until the very end of his short life. However King is not the only man to step and realize his responsibilities. Another man did too, with methods and motives of entirely different types.

Malcolm X is one of the most recognizable names in Black history today. Born in Omaha, Nebraska with the name Malcolm Little. He moved to Lansing, Michigan where he would see his house burned down at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan, two years later his father, a large supporter of the ideals of moving the blacks away from racist America back to the homeland of Africa, was murdered, Malcolm's father was the fifth death in his family caused by racism, three uncles were beaten by whites, one was lynched, subsequently, his mother was placed in a mental institution. He would later move to Boston, and in 146, while in prison, he would convert to the Black Muslim faith, a religion that believed that blacks should not just be equal, but regarded as superior to the evil white man. He met with Elijah Muhammad, the leader of this religious sect upon being released from prison. After this meeting, he would change his name to Malcolm X, due to the belief that his given name was the name of his slaveholders, and therefore, evil. He would go on speaking tours throughout the nation, and people would soon see his incredible ability to move hundreds even thousands with his words. He soon became the most popular speaker in the religious sect. He spoke extremely eloquently against the white man, and a large following grew behind Malcolm, instead of the religion. His speaking helped gain large numbers of people to join the militant movement for black power. He is even considered the cause of converting Cassius Clay to the religion, Clay would later become known to many as Muhammad Ali. Due to his popularity, the Nation of Islam's hierarchy felt threatened by him, and suspended him from the movement. During his suspension, Malcolm would make a pilgrimage to Mecca, the Muslim holy land. As a result he would leave the Black Muslim faith and create his own religion, in which he stated that whites were not inherently evil, but able to join with blacks and form worldwide brotherhood. His new views agreed more with those of Martin Luther King Jr. and gained him even more support. His new followers that believed in equality however began to rival those of the Black Muslim faith, who were still obsessed with their ideal of black power and white inferiority. The rivalry between the two groups led up to February 1st, 165. Malcolm was in a ballroom in Harlem, giving a speech to his followers when a man stood up with a sawed-off shotgun and fired shots into Malcolm's chest, two other men ran to the stage where Malcolm was lying and emptied their .45 guns into his chest. Malcolm would die later at New York hospital. Three Black Muslims would later be charged in the killing of Malcolm X and convicted. In his short life, Malcolm converted thousands to the Black Muslim faith, and then eventually to his own faith and orthodox Islam. His original message of black power and superiority put confidence in many black men who were once afraid to stand up against their white oppressors. His advocating of the ideas of equality and world brotherhood helped to join people together instead of fueling the fire for an all out race war. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest men in Civil Rights history.

Through the long fight that was the Civil Rights movement, many had to make sacrifices for their beliefs, be it Blacks giving up riding the bus and walking throughout Montgomery, Alabama for 84 days, or Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. giving up their lives, being killed for believing in and hoping for equality. It is difficult to imagine how things would have played out differently had Dr. King and Malcolm X not lived to allow people to realize their true bravery, without these two men, and the thousands that risked their lives walking the streets of Montgomery, the racist normalcy may have never changed, and we could be living in an entirely different world.

g 1/ 5 Live a Double Life-Why Not?

Live a Double LifeWhy Not?

"I was living a double lifeone with my Christian friends and another with my school friends."

The situation of the young woman quoted above is hardly unique. But what is meant by "living a double life"? Ruth Bell, author of the book Changing Bodies, Changing Lives, defined the practice as "anything you are doing that you don't tell your parents about."

This author interviewed dozens of young people and reported "Many teenagers said they had things going on in their life that they just couldn't talk to their parents about. The most common areas for secrecy were sex and drugs and drinking, but people also mentioned things like staying out late, picking up strangers, skipping school, fighting, and going around with friends their parents didn't like."

Sad to say, even some youths raised by Christian parents hide what they are from their parents and others. (Compare Psalm 64.) Around parents and fellow believers, these youths appear to be upright and God-fearing. But away from such scrutiny, they behave as if they are different people altogether.

Just what moves a youth to carry on a double life?

w1 6/15 0 Youths-Will You Pass the Test of Christian Loyalty?

While a person may 'hide what he is' from his parents or the congregation, he cannot hide from Jehovah. "There is not a creation that is not manifest to his sight, but all things are naked and openly exposed to the eyes of him with whom we have an accounting." (Hebrews 41) The Bible assures us "He that is covering over his transgressions will not succeed." (Proverbs 81) In time the wrong will be exposed. One simply cannot outsmart Jehovah. Proverbs 7 says "Do not become wise in your own eyes. Fear Jehovah and turn away from bad." Remember, too, that "the eyes of Jehovah are in every place, keeping watch upon the bad ones and the good ones."Proverbs 15.

w86 /15 1 Do Not Be Quickly Shaken From Your Reason

Let us illustrate matters in this way Suppose your teenage son received some pornographic material in the mail. What would you do? If he was inclined to read it out of curiosity, would you say 'Yes, son, go ahead and read it. It won't hurt you. From infancy we've taught you that immorality is bad. Besides, you need to know what's going on in the world in order to see that it's truly bad'? Would you reason that way? Absolutely not! Rather, you would surely point out the dangers of reading pornographic literature and would require that it be destroyed. Why? Because no matter how strong a person may be in the truth, if he feeds his mind on the perverted ideas found in such literature, his mind and heart will be affected. A lingering wrong desire planted in the recesses of the heart can eventually create a perverted sexual appetite. The result? James says that when wrong desire becomes fe I came to US when I was only 11. The journey that took me here started on the night of December 1, 17. thsi ieme dkjkjd kjkjd k kjkjk kkjkjd

Proverbs 7 says "Do not become wise in your own eyes. Fear Jehovah and turn away from bad." Remember, too, that "the eyes of Jehovah are in every place, keeping watch upon the bad ones and the good ones."Proverbs 15.

Because no matter how strong a person may be in the truth, if he feeds his mind on the perverted ideas found in such literature, his mind and heart will be affected. A lingering wrong desire planted in the recesses of the heart can eventually create a perverted sexual appetite. The result? James says that when wrong desire becomes fe
