Lost Opportunity

This is a passage of my life, which I remember with very much fondness, maybe because it could be my first love and could not be. It was my first day of classes, my best friend and I were excited to start a new school year and make new friends. Central High School is an old school I remember all rooms having a very peculiar odor, like a musky smell, the classrooms was big and cold. So there I was going down the bright lighted halls when I saw him. I instantly felt butterflies in my stomach. He was there standing against the deep blue lockers, tall, lean, black hair that matched his very big black eyes. As I passed by our eyes met and he smiled at me. He had the very big beautiful smile, his teeth white as a paper. I didn't see him again after that until I went to my last class, physical education. When I walked into the gym to my surprise, there he was! We were introduced and from that moment on we began a friendship. We started visiting each other often, we shared chats, games, music and everything was happiness. I liked him from the first moment I saw him but to say it the friendship would end and for any motive we did not want that to happen.

His sister was our accomplice and our confident; she was a very funny girl, tall, red hair with freckles on her face, very white skin, white as milk. She was there whenever we needed her. She always used to say " Don't worry loves conquer all" I wished I had her confidence. Everything was a game of seduction, the two of us was a playing game, but the game board was the same, the pieces were barely moving without having anything said. Every time I saw him my heart jumped and I would blush, I felt my face burn like hot potato. One day I had to leave, leaving behind my illusions and maybe what could have been my great love. I lost him and I did not return until a year later, which we still didn't have the courage to say anything about our love. Another year happened it felt like eternity, every minute that passed felt like an hour, everyday felt like a month. I found out the truth through her sister, his secret love for me, but for me it was too late, he was gone from my life or maybe I never gambled to that love that it had not died….yet. This event happened in my life that I would never forget, it taught me that life offers you opportunities and you should take advantage of them because they might never come back.

A pharmacist's job description consists of dispensing drugs that are prescribed by physicians in order to treat a number of illnesses, ailments, and irregularities. A Pharmacist is also expected to provide the patient with important information needed to administer the medication properly and without complications. Pharmacists are expected to be knowledgeable on the composition of drugs, and the actual mixing of ingredients to form various medians of treatment including powders, pills, ointments and solutions.

Pharmacists can work in a number of different settings including retail, hospital, and in home healthcare. Pharmacists who work in a retail setting commonly advise patients on a number of issues concerning them including drug interactions and medical equipment. Community pharmacists also give advice on over the counter medications. They advise patients based on health surveys and what other medications they are currently taking. Pharmacists that are employed by hospitals and clinics dispense medications and advise the medical staff on different drugs. There is also a lot of planning involved in hospital pharmacy, counseling patients on drug regimens and on the use of drugs while in the hospital.

A degree in pharmacy typically takes 6 years to obtain with years of pre-pharmacy education and 4 years of undergraduate study. After these have been completed you can opt to study for a masters or for what is known as a Pharm.D or a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree. Pharmacists also undergo a lot of training throughout their college study and even after college in patient care and consultative services to other health professionals.

Pharmacy seems like a career that is very rewarding. Without pharmacists many people could be mislead into taking drugs they do not need or accidentally interacting certain prescriptions. Pharmacists make a very decent salary without having to go to school for an exorbitantly large amount of time, about 70,000 a year on average. The one drawback of pharmacists is that they are often required to work long and undesirable hours because many pharmacies are open all day long, 7 days a week. There are also ethical concerns in pharmacy. There was a case recently where a pharmacist diluted cancer medication in order to make more money. A pharmacist has to be an honest and prudent individual because of the hundreds of lives that depend on him or her, daily. Overall, I think pharmacy is an excellent job with a good salary and benefits.

"A world without cars, although unimaginable today; it was but back in the evolution of times" (Internet "Car History"). People used to pull their crude carts by use of slaves and the horses (Burgess Wise 8); then people started taking interest in education and Science became a part of education. People started inventing things by using Science and other education and they started to make a self-propelled vehicle to make their work easier and faster (Burgess Wise 8).

"The principle of mechanics has been made in 500 B.C. The Ancient Sumerian Civilization used flat structures mounted on wheels" which was the earliest reference to transport (Internet "Car History"). Using this reference, a man named Nicolas Cugnot started to make a self-propelled vehicle. He was a French Military Engineer who used a steam-engine to make it in 176 (Internet "Car History"). It was the world's first self-propelled vehicle in the history of cars (Internet "Car History").

The development of the car took place in Paris Arsenal and this car was used for French Army to move Canons ("The Early Cars" 1). The material of that car was metal and that's how it looked like on the right side ("The Early Cars" 1). That car had no roof, as you see that it also didn't have seats for a person to sit and drive. The highest speed of the car was 6 km/hrs ("The Early Cars" 1).

The early car era nonetheless played an extremely significant role in the evolution of todays car.

Odysseus stranded on Calypso's island.

Telemachus and Penelope think he is dead, as well as all of Penelope's suitors.

Penelope's suitors are eating Telemachus and Penelope out of house and home.

Athena visits Telemachus, hints that Odysseus is still alive, and Telemachus warns the suitors to leave, and then goes to visit Nestor and Menelaus.

Help with essay on Odyssey Outline

Nestor and Menelaus tell Telemachus what happened to the other leaders at Troy, and that Odysseus is still alive, but held captive on an island.

Suitors plan to kill Telemachus on the way back, but Athena warns Telemachus who escapes it.

During this time, Calypso finally consents to release Odysseus, who builds a raft and sets off. A few days later, a nasty storm hits, and the raft is destroyed, Odysseus is only barely able to swim to the island of the Phaecians.

On the island Odysseus tells the tale of his Odyssey, which is as follows

The lotus-eaters, men put into daze

Cyclopes, Polyphemus, blinded "No-man" escapes

Island of Aeolus, windbag, driven back to island

Laestrygonians, all ships but Odysseus's destroyed

Circe, Odysseus's men changed into pigs. Odysseus gets moly from Hermes, and is unaffected by her sorcery.

Sirens, men plug ears with wax, Odysseus tied to mast.

Scylla and Charybdis, the snake and the chasm, Odysseus loses 6 men to Scylla.

Cattle of the sun eaten by his men, their destruction ensured.

Ship destroyed in storm, all but Odysseus perish who is washed up onto Calypso's island.

After his tale, Odysseus is given a ship ride back to Ithaca, where he takes shelter, unrecognized, in his head swineherd's hut, from who he learns the state of things at his household.

Meanwhile Telemachus returns from his travels, and goes to visit the swineherd, and while the swineherd is temporarily absent, Odysseus reveals himself to his son, and they plan their next move.

Odysseus resumes his disguise, and goes into the city disguised as a beggar, goes to his house and is mistreated by the suitors.

Finally Penelope decides that she must choose a suitor, but the lucky one must string Odysseus's bow and shoot an arrow through twelve axes. None of the suitors are able to do it, and presently the bow comes to Odysseus and he, of course is able to. Odysseus, Telemachus, and two of his loyal servants then kill all of the suitors.

The next day peace is made between the families of the suitors and Odysseus.

Comparative Essay

"Oranges" and "Cruel Boys" Are alike in a few ways. One poem could be explained as describing the way good boys act and the other describes they way bad boys act. Although they are completely different poems, they can be compared in many different ways.

In the poem "Oranges", a boy takes a girl for a walk to town for the first time. It is December and very cold with frost on the ground. He has two oranges and a nickel in his pocket for the two of them to eat. They go into the drugstore so that he could buy her a piece of candy but she picked out a piece that was a dime; he then had to pay for the candy with the nickel and one of the oranges. They leave the store and walk a few blocks holding hands until they decide to stop and eat the candy and the orange.

"Cruel Boys" is about two boys who start their first day at school as 8th graders. They talk about having football and track stars dressed in girls clothes drawn on their notebooks. They critizes cops, teachers, and the principals for trying to break them or just simply make them behave. They go to first, second, and third period and burst out comments in the middle of class while throwing spitballs.

The poems "Oranges" and "Cruel Boys" can be compared in several different ways. For instance, they both describe two friends at young ages that do a lot of things

Sherrill

together. "Oranges" talks about a boy taking a girl out for the first time in his life and "Cruel Boys" talks about two boys in the 8th grade trying to be as bad as possible. Both stories say something about a controversy with another person. The boy in "Oranges" has to buy a ten-cent piece of candy with only a nickel and an orange. He looked up at the cashier knowing what was going to happen but she ends up selling him the candy anyway. The boys in "Cruel Boys" disrupt the class and start to through spitballs, which are making a controversy with the teacher.

"Oranges" and "Cruel Boys" are alike in very similar way and can be compared in a lot of different ways. Throwing spitballs, buying a piece of candy with a nickel and an orange, and two friends sticking together through thick and thin are just a few ways these poems can be compared. Even though these poems are completely different, they are also alike in their on ways.

The purpose of this study is to determine if Dissociative Identity Disorder is a

separate disease with distinct clinical features, or if it is a role played out by the patient

having been influenced by therapists or other outside sources.

Custom writing service can write essays on disorder

The study involved twenty-one females diagnosed with DID. Twenty were

recruited from various out patient facilities and one female was recruited from an

institution where she was an inpatient. The same number were recruited for the

control group. They had been diagnosed with other forms of disorders but with no

dissociative disorder diagnoses or neurological disorders. The women were similar

in age, income, and education.

The participants were administered six different tests measuring frequency of

dissociative experiences, depressions, substance abuse, sexual and physical abuse,

fantasies, self altering experiences, and the Rorschach test.

It was found that the DID group had a much higher score in the areas of

emotional, physical, and sexual abuse and emotional and physical neglect. They also,

on the Rorschach test, interpreted the inkblots as having more morbid interpretations

and also more movement. Because of this consistency it was assumed that DID

patients were, in this case different or distinguishable from borderline personality

disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. This is important because it helps to

substantiate the theory that DID is a separate disease with distinct symptoms. The

common traits of sexual and physical abuse at an early age, a high rate of substance abuse

and suicide was also meaningful because these were also consistent features.

This study showed common characteristics and it also showed that because

DID patients have a tendency towards more imaginative interpretations (as indicated on

the Rorschach test) and have altered states of consciousness and trance like states that

this group may be more susceptible to outside influences.

The final analysis concluded that DID participants displayed a distinctive set

of characteristics and had a common set of clinical features distinguishing them from

nondissociative psychiatric patients.

be disgraceful to criticize or speak against her husband in any way. All her life she had been told that her opinions do not count. You may ask, Why doesnt Winnie fight to protect her rights from being obviously violated by Wen Fu? The answer is that she has never heard of individual rights of women that are actually worth anything; it is utterly unheard of in Confucianism. Confucianism also hampered Winnies attempts at running away. Since women are regarded as inferior and totally dependent on others in Confucianist society, there was no way a woman could make it on her own in the world unless she became a servant, which definitely would not help Winnies plan. The reason she put off running away so often was because there was no way she could survive on her own, not (ironically) without her husband. Only when she met Jimmy Louie for the second time in Shanghai did Winnie have any hope of escaping her horrible marriage.

Besides describing a mother-daughter relationship and bashing Confucianism, The Kitchen Gods Wife is also about human qualities, emotions, and even vices. This book is also about love, betrayal, injustice, hope, friendship, and loyalty. Love existed in Winnies relationships with those closest to her. She dearly loved her children, Yiku and Danru, and they were sources of joy and hope--sometimes, they were all that kept her from giving up and ending the misery for good. After Danru died, Winnie knew that she could not bear to have anymore children and subject them to the cruel attentions of Wen Fu, so she got an abortion every time she got pregnant, not out of convenience, but out of love. She explains to Pearl, I cried to myself, this is a sin--to give a baby such a bad life! Poor Danru. He trusted me. So I let those other babies die. In my heart, I was being kind.

Winnie and Helen shared a strange friendship. As Winnie says, She [Hulan] is not someone I chose as my friend. Sometimes I do not even enjoy her company. I do not agree with her opinions. I do not admire her character. And yet we are closer perhaps than sisters, related by fate, joined by debts. I have kept her secrets. She has kept mine. And we have a kind of loyalty that has no name in this country. She and Helen became friends purely through circumstance, but their friendship has endured because they know each others secrets, and are bound by this to be loyal to each other. So naturally, Winnie felt betrayed when Helen said that she wanted to tell Pearl Winnies darkest secrets. Winnie also felt betrayed when Helen helped Wen Fu find her when Winnie first attempted to run away.

In this drastically changing world, student policies have greater impact on the prospect of any institution. The students and teachers work cooperatively to determine student policies. In most of the institutions, even the management board has a student representative. This tells the significance of student policies in any institution.

Any new infrastructure or facility for the institution arises with a forcing backup of student groups. Policies of an institution are laid for the convenience of students. So most of the policies of any institution are student driven. They should be controlling and regulating the students. Policies should be modified when students are not convenient or when they are out of control of lecturers.

The lecturers should monitor students carefully by moving closer with them and observe their needs. Then, they should analyse these needs by discussing with the management and try to implement them. They should take care of loopholes in any policy. Management committee should have to carry out an open discussion about various issues periodically with the students.

At any case student-management relationship should not be spoiled. However in institutions where traditions mean more than transition to new policies according to the changing world, this is not being implemented. This results in friction between the students and the management. This would lead the student to go off track. In turn the management would implement laws for reprisal of the student violating the laws. The management should be precautious about this kind of situation.

Order Custom Influence of students in the determination of college policies paper

Students should also think in broad manner, while taking any aggressive decision. They should have a vision of their career and of the institution. If they are inconvenient with a policy, they should inform their management and explain the problem clearly. If it is not solved, then they should go higher authorities.

Thus I conclude by saying that in modern era institutions the influence of students in the determination of college policies is under growing rapid growth, which should be encouraged.

Please note that this sample paper on Influence of students in the determination of college policies is for your review only. The Age of Steel

"The American Experience" Meet Andrew Carnegie.

www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/carnegie/sfeature/meet andrews.html 16 June 001

Author unknown

This article depicts Andrew Carnegie as more than a "ruthless and grasping" Pittsburgh steel manufacturer or millionaire. He was a skillful and efficient businessman for sure. But, he was also a "man of steel with a heart of gold." Who never forget the hard times of his youth or the love of family?

His life began in the town of Dunfermline Scotland to an impoverished family. This poverty taught him a very valuable lesson and guided him the rest of his life. It made him want to become more than a poor laborer working for wages.

On the surface Carnegie appeared to be a ruthless businessman with one thought in mind, money. He worked his way up the ladder to become the richest man in the world at that time. He became the Rockefeller of steel. This climb was sometimes turbulent. At his Homestead plant his manger Henry Clay Firch stopped a union strike with the aid of Pinkerton detectives at the cost of human lives. Carnegie's tactics were a little subtler. He wrote in his files that money was "one of the worst species of idolatry" and that once he mad his fortune he was going to share with others before it degraded him beyond the hope of permanent recovery."

He accomplished this in two ways. First, he created an empire of steel and money. Second, he thought of others before himself. He even postponed his marriage to care for his ailing mother. He went even farther before his death by donating over 50 million dollars to free libraries, colleges, and educational grants.

I agree with this article that there were two faces to Andrew Carnegie. He was a ruthless executive while still retaining a compassionate and generous side. His heart was as large as his empire.

The article relates to the material in Chapter 18 that tells of Carnegie's struggle with the growth of his steel company and his journey as a self-made man. The industrial boom of the steel industry helped Carnegie build an empire. Although his mother was a washwoman and his father worked himself to death in the mills, he climbed out of the slums into the mansions of New York. He started in the medieval capital of Scotland and went in search of his own castle. He found his castle. But, unlike some kings, he distributed his wealth among others less fortunate.

The numbers , 4 and 5 satisfy this condition

+ 4 = 5

because = x =

4 = 4 x 4 = 16

Custom writing service can write essays on beyond pythagoras

5 = 5 x 5 = 5

and so + 4 = + 16 = 5 = 5

The numbers 5, 1, 1 and 7, 4, 5 also work for this theorem

5 + 1 = 1

because 5 = 5 x 5 = 5

1 = 1 x 1 = 144

1 = 1 x 1 = 16

and so 5 + 1 = 5 + 144 = 16 = 1

7 + 4 = 5

because 7 = 7 x 7 = 4

4 = 4 x 4 = 576

5 = 5 x 5 = 65

and so 7 + 4 = 4 + 576 = 65 = 5 essaybank.co.uk

, 4, 5

Perimeter = + 4 + 5 = 1

Area = ½ x x 4 = 6

5, 1, 1

Perimeter = 5 + 1 + 1 = 0

Area = ½ x 5 x 1 = 0

7, 4, 5

Perimeter = 7 + 4 + 5 = 56

Area = ½ x 7 x 4 = 84

From the first three terms I have noticed the following -

?a? increases by + each term

?a? is equal to the term number times then add 1

the last digit of ?b? is in a pattern 4, , 4

the last digit of ?c? is in a pattern 5, , 5

the square root of (?b? + ?c?) = ?a?

?c? is always +1 to ?b?

?b? increases by +4 each term

(?a? x ?n?) + n = ?b?

Now I will complete the square on ?4n + 6n + ? to see what the solution to this is.

4n + 6n +

4(n +) - +

4(n +) - 7

4(n +) = 7

(n +) = 1.75

n + = 1.875656

n + = -1.875656

n = -1.6771444

n = -4.875656

Arithmatic Progression

I would like to know whether or not the Pythagorean triple ,4,5 is the basis of all triples just some of them.

To find this out I have been to the library and looked at some A-level textbooks and learnt ?Arithmatic Progression?

, 4, 5 is a Pythagorean triple

The pattern is plus one

If a = and d = difference (which is +1) then

= a

4 = a + d

5 = a +d

MQ8FnH from MQ8FnH essay MQ8FnH bank MQ8FnH co MQ8FnH uk

a, a +d, a + d

Therefore if you incorporate this into Pythagoras theorem

a + (a + d) = (a + d)

a + (a + d)(a + d) = (a + d)

a + a + ad + ad + d = (a + d)

a + ad + d = (a + d)

a + ad + d = (a + d)(a + d)

a + ad + d = a + ad + ad + 4d

a + ad + d = 4d + a + 4ad

wwcb cbw escbcbs aycb cbba ncb kccb cbuk!

If you equate these equations to 0 you get

a - d - ad = 0

Change a to x

x - d - dx = 0

Factorise this equation to get

(x + d)(x - d)

Therefore

x = -d

x = d

x = -d is impossible as you cannot have a negative dimension

a, a+d, a + d

Is the same as

d, 4d, 5d

This tells us that the only Pythagorean triples are , 4, 5 or multiples of , 4, 5 e.g. 6, 8, 10 or 1, 16, 0 etc.

The vast majority of schools in the United States are safe places, and in recent years they have become even safer. Safe schools are essential to our ability to learn and develop healthy lifestyles and friendships. The overall rates of violence has fallen (A statistic of the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center), and most students don't feel any less safe in schools as they have in previous years. In fact, students are much less likely to come to harm at school than away from school where adult supervision is not mandatory or deemed nessesary. However, some schools do have serious crime and violence problems, and many students, teachers, and parents continue to have grave concerns about safety in schools. To address these concerns, Lower Merion and other schools need to initiate talking between parents, teacher and students.

The only way to help solve violent acts occurring in our school is to find out three things, first, if there are violent acts going on, second, if so then to what extreme and finally initiate a way to stop them. There is no doubt in my mind that violent actions occur in Lower Merion but most likely other people aren't aware of it. I believe that time should be taken to educate the students about the real dangers of school violence. If once a month homerooms would come together at the end of the day and just talk. I have no doubt in my mind that talking solves problems. I would want my role to equal with everyone else's. I believe that as soon as you give one student the power, they end up talking the whole time. This time is meant for people to talk but even more to listen. I think videos, speakers and interactive role playing would make these experiences greater. All the students at Lower Merion are diverse and come from different backgrounds and Lower Merion doesn't have the power to control their thoughts and ideas on violence; all that the school can do is try to educate them. By all the means necessary, I would help start this seminar. All in all, if people understand the serious reality of school violence, then the chances of a violent act occurring will decrees.

While the media has focused on school shootings, school violence includes a range of activities but the NYVPRC says that schools have become safer. The data about these types of violence present a mixed picture of school safety. The only way to cut away the mixed picture and bring Lower Merion to a level of safety is by talking and listening to students that sit in it's classrooms and walk down it's halls.

After watching the show on garbage, it made me realize how important garbage really is. Before I had seen that show I didn't realize all the things that do, or could come from garbage, and how much the choices of what to do with our garbage will affect our environment, and our future. Recycling is so easy it doesn't make sense that we don't have 100% recycling, or at least very close to it. People should recycle more, they may not want to recycle now, but if they saw what the earth could look like in the future if we didn't, I'm sure it would change any sane person's mind. I think what they r doing in Japan, or China, or wherever is a really good idea. By sorting the different items then recycling them making the environment cleaner is obviously a positive step. I think that the U.S. should start doing the same with our recyclable items. I think that if everybody knew the consequences of polluting the environment they would recycle more, and buy more recyclable items like enviro-packs and other things. A lot of older people aren't as educated about pollution, and what it has to do with the environment, but if younger kids learn about it now, then it is more likely that they will pass the habit on to their kids, and it will be passed down from generation, which will improve the state of our earth.

Environmental Focus

B. Sample as many habitats as possible to see what type of organisms live in each. Then answer the following

What are the life zones in this lake, and what kinds of creatures inhabit them?

You can separate this lake into two zones. The Linetic zone, which is the middle area of the lake contains most fish and other larger living organisms such as turtles. The other zone in this lake is called the Litoral zone. The Litoral zone is the area where the water meets the bank. This zone contains various forms of plant life and other smaller organisms.

How do dissolved oxygen levels in the water change through the seasons? When this lake freezes over in the winter (or if it did), what effect on oxygen levels does that have? Why?

The melting of the frozen lake in the spring creates a circulation of nutrients and oxygen. This melting creates a 'turn over' in the lake, which lets the lake start fresh come spring time.

How might human manipulations that occur here (such as fish stocking, herbicide application, fishing, etc.) affect lake processes?

Fish stocking can be good for a lake. The stocking of more of certain species of fish can help a lake/pond establish a stronger ecosystem. Although, if too much of a new species is introduced to a lake it could destroy its ecosystem. For instance, if a large amount of Northern Pike (large predator fish) were introduced into a pond full of mostly small predator/prey fish it could disrupt the ponds fragile ecosystem. The Pike would devour all the other fish, while the Pike itself would have no natural predator to help control its own population. Over fishing and herbicide can diminish fish populations to a point where the lakes ecosystem could collapse.

What causes algal blooms in some lakes and not in others? Describe the natural and cultural causes of eutrophication in a eutrophic lake?

Lakes with little current and in direct sun light can normally have more algal blooms then lakes in shady areas, with stronger currents. If a lake is near a farm, the spraying of pesticides that may run off into a lake can cause the lake to have large amounts of algal blooms.

How can algal blooms result in late summer fish kills?

If a lake is consumed by algal blooms it can have detrimental effects on the fish in the lake. There will be less space for the fish to survive which can in it self lower the lakes population of certain fish. Too many algal blossoms in a lake can actually suffocate the fish, because too many algal blossoms can cut down on the lakes natural circulation.

On December 7, 141, at 75 a.m. the Japanese intentionally and viciously attacked Pearl Harbor. A second attack came at 855 a.m. and by 55 a.m. the action was over, the Japanese were gone, and Pearl Harbor was left in ashes. The United States suffered ,40 deaths while 1,178 men were badly wounded. Eighteen ships were either sunk or severely damaged, and 188 planes were destroyed. This date is often referred to as a "surprise attack," but many believe Roosevelt had ties with Japan and access to information from broken codes and Japanese officials to know exactly what the Japanese were planning against the United States.

According to opinion polls in the summer of 140, a majority of Americans did not think the country should be involved in the wars in Europe. However, Roosevelt and his military leaders thought a successful Nazi Germany would harm the safety of the United States and they felt America needed to enter the action. President Roosevelt's Head of Navy Intelligence in Washington, Lieutenant Commander Arthur McCollum, was a very important part of the plan to enter war. While overseeing the routes of communication intelligence to the president from early 140 until the attack on Pearl Harbor, he provided reports of Japanese diplomatic and military line of attack. All of the information McCollum gave Roosevelt was collected from American radio intercept operators. McCollum thought that war with Japan was unavoidable, and wanted to provoke war at a time that would be convenient for the United States. He proposed eight steps that he assumed would lead to a Japanese attack on the United States

1. Make an arrangement with Britain for the use of British bases in the Pacific, particularly Singapore.

. Make an arrangement with Holland for the use of base facilities and acquisition of supplies in the Dutch East Indies.

. Give all possible aid to the Chinese government of Chiang Kai-shek.

4. Send a division of long-range heavy cruisers to the Orient, Philippines, or Singapore.

5. Send two divisions of submarines to the Orient.

6. Keep the main strength of the US Fleet, now in the Pacific, in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands.

7. Insist that the Dutch refuse to grant Japanese demands for undue economic concessions, particularly oil.

8. Completely embargo all trade with Japan, in collaboration with a similar embargo imposed by the British Empire.

McCollum's memo was dated October 7, 140, and the very next day was put into effect, and Roosevelt ordered that the United States Fleets be kept in Hawaii.

Company K "Private Stahl"

Breaking a mirror, walking under a ladder, encountering a black cat. All superstitions which supposedly prophesy bad luck. In Private Stahl's story, the soldiers accidentally drop a bucket into a well; ignorant of the apparent local superstition that dropping a bucket indicates that the owner's relative is dead. This can be deduced from the old lady's unreasonably emotional reaction to such a seemingly insignificant occurrence. She was "tearing her hair and beating her breasts." These are classic expressions of great mourning particularly for a family member. This idea is also supported for the town's apparent sympathy for the woman. It would be unreasonable to assume that such a strong reaction could be caused by the loss of such an inconsequential item.

My reaction to this vignette was one of compassion for the grief of the old lady. In the despair and destruction of war trustworthy news is not widely distributed. In small country villages, often superstition prevails in the absence of better sources of information. The old lady's passionate grief evoked strong empathy for the emotional agony she was experiencing. As upsetting as the stories in this book are, few relate the experience of the families of the dead soldiers. Utilizing a subtle conceit, the author is able to portray the intense grief of the families as well as the inability of others to comprehend the loved ones' sorrow, embodied not only by the soldiers who simply did not understand the old woman's incensed reaction and the villagers who could only offer sympathy rather than an empathetic response. This effective use caused me to place myself in her position resulting in a better understanding for her emotions. The anonymity of the woman aided the reader in this regard in that the woman could have been anyone, the reader's aunt, god mother, or grandmother. In summation, the emotional undertones of this vignette expressed through the writing evoked a compassionate response in the reader.

This story, after only superficial examination would appear dry and irrational. However, the clever literary skills of the writer transforms what would be a seemingly empty account into a heartrending heart wrenching story of grief. The old lady's reaction provides a unique point of view that the book relates in no other section. The humanity of the woman strikes a compassionate chord in the humanity of the reader. In conclusion, my reaction to this story was one of compassion for the old lady's grief.

In the story "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemingway, one of the most important topics of this story has to do with loneliness. There are two waiters, an older waiter and a younger waiter. There's also an old deaf man and a bartender. They are at an empty caf late at night. The old man and old waiter are lonely. The young waiter is in a hurry to get home. The bartender is disinterested, but he's like the young waiter, wanting to get home. The lonely characters would like to stay at the caf to escape reality, whereas the characters that aren't lonely want to go home.

The old man appears to be deaf and desires nothing more from life than just to get drunk. He drowns his sorrows in alcohol. The old man attempts to commit suicide because "he was in despair" (Hemingway 7). He tried to commit suicide by hanging himself, but his niece cut him down. His despair is a result of being old; "He must be eighty years old"(Hemingway 80). He is also lonely because his wife died and he doesn't have anyone to talk to about his problems or just to keep him company.

The Old waiter could relate to the old man because he was more like him. The old waiter was in no hurry to go home because he has no one or nothing to go home to. "Why didn't you let him stay and drink? It is not half past two," (Hemingway 81) said the old waiter. The old waiter was suggesting that it wasn't closing time and that the old man could have stayed. The old waiter is compassionate, unlike the young waiter. He says, "he might be better with a wife" (Hemingway 81).

Young waiter lacks compassion and only thinks about himself. He thinks that his time is more important than the old man's time. An hour is "more to me than to him" (Hemingway 81). The young waiter says, "I wouldn't want to be that old, an old man is a nasty thing" (Hemingway 81). That shows that he doesn't have any compassion towards the old man. The young waiter just doesn't have any respect for the old man. He says that "I don't want to look at him, I wish he would go home" (Hemingway 81).

The Birthday Party

1. How would you present the dialogue to create comic impact for the audience in the section from the beginning up to line 0?

Petey remains blank, monotone expression, worn down from years of her.Gaze out to the audience with dead sea eyes, becomes chilling/comic for audience (Brecht). She needs a squeaking irritating voice. OTT from her, almost pantomimical. Like a child, hops from foot to foot, "are they nice?"

"You got your paper?" could fold it over as she says, showing how pointless Q is.

"Nothing much" could open it out to show how he is irritated by her and also to show that a lot is written.

Petey could grimace as she talks like she pierces his ears.

Meg like a child exaggerated on "oh in winter" like she has just learnt something important. Ironic as she is old lady.

When darning she could be watching his face so closely for signs of changed expression that she darns her hand into the sock.

"Who Petey who?" could clasp her hands together with hands still in sock.

Meg schizophrenic "I'd much rather have a little boy" say with such aggression that Petey's expression flickers. Also ref. to Stanley? She suddenly clever with power "that's right".

. With reference to specific moments of dialogue and action, illustrate how you would present the character of Petey in performance.

Petey has been worn down by years of Meg. No backbone as he would have left? Petey needs blank expression and monotone voice to show how worn down he is. Grimace at her voice? Clever or not? Knows about light etc but surely would not have ended up with her? Seems quite responsible when on about two men. Weird he to swaps power like Meg. Table = monotone, away from table = OK. Petey like a scared child answers minimal as he feels uncomfortable yet makes effort. Body lang., at table monotone, real slow eating cornflakes. Turns paper like effort. When Stan comes down more effort yet fiddles, as if nervous. Irony as why old man nervous?

. Suggest a setting for the extract that would convey an appropriate atmosphere.

Meg has worn Petey down so it would seem appropriate for furniture to be how she wants it. Old couple, 50s, sop furniture 10's? Big solid looking things, non matching, worn. Gaudy. Check curtains round window. Flowery coushions on
