Beowulf is a story about a king named Hrothgar who has a stunning empire and foyer called Herot that was built for his soldiers. A man-eating monster named Grendel is petrifying Hrothgar's kingdom. Every night he arrives to kill King Hrothgar's men. The monster comes to murder anyone its claws can grasp.

Finally, words broaden about the monsters ferocious visits. Beowulf, the Geat, comes to Hrothgar's kingdom he and his men and offers to kill Grendel. Hrothgar remembered he helped Beowulf's father Ecgtheow, so he welcomes him. During his visit, a man named Unferth tries to get into an argument with Beowulf by accusing him of losing a swimming contest with a man named Brecca. Beowulf tells the story of his heroic victory in the contest, and the group celebrates his bravery.

Beowulf then fights Grendel and tears his arm out of his socket and kills him. (Grendel dies later on after he escapes from Beowulf but Beowulf is the reason why he died.) Grendels, mother then comes wanting vengeance for her son and kills Hrothgars best friend Aeschere. When Beowulf is called to the hall, he finds Hrothgar in grief for his friend. Beowulf then goes to the burning lake and jumps in to find Grendels mother. He kills her and cuts off her head and finds Grendel and cuts off his head.

The name of the story is called "Beowulf". In the beginning Scyld Scefing was an orphan and he got lucky and became ruler. Hrothgar was his great grandson and he was a noble king. Hrothgar built a mead hall named Herot for his soldiers because they had won a lot of wars. Then one night this monster had came named Grendel. Grendel was a descendent from Cain and he was evil. He came on night will the soldiers were drunk and sleep and killed about thirty of Hrothgars men. For about 1 winters he came and was killing the soldiers. Then Beowulf the Geat came and told Hrothgar that he would help him since he helped his daddy awhile back. So Beowulf and his men went to eat then a guy named Unferth came and was trying to hate on Beowulf saying that he was lying about the swimming contest between he and Brecca. So Beowulf told his story and Unferth was jealous that a man came to his town to do a job he couldn't do. Finally, Beowulf meets Grendel because they were all in Herot pretending to be asleep, then Grendel came and kicked in the doors and snatched up one dude then he grabbed Beowulf and Beowulf got his arm and held it tight. Grendel then got scared and all he wanted to do was leave, but he couldn't because the man had him in his grasp. Beowulf rips of his arm and Grendel crawls home and dies. Well his mother found him and when the soldiers were in Herot she came and killed Hrothgars best friend and takes back Grendels arm. Then Beowulf had to jump in to the burning lake where she lived and fight the mother. He ends up cutting her and Grendels head off and bringing it back on the sword called Hrunting. Then Beowulf has to fight this dragon because someone stole an item from the treasure he was guarding.

What can we do to stop violence in schools?

In school there can be a lot of violence. Some are gang activity, locker thefts, bullying, intimidation, gun use and assaults just about anything you can imagine. To stop this we need mettle detectors, security, strictness of teachers, etc. Schools should have school management's. Some of them can be discipline and punishment such as suspension and expulsion. Also there are a lot of programs to stop violence. Talk with a counselor, mental health clinic, family doctor, psychologist, religious leader, the school's dean of students, or the office of student assistance. But mainly preventing starts in family. If that happens schools will be safe and the amount of violence will decrease.

Violence begins from a lot of things. Some of the violence in schools are verbal insults, pushing, shoving, grabbing, slapping, threats, kicking, biting, hitting with a fist, threats with a knife or gun, using a knife or firing a gun , theft, and threatening a teacher. Outside of schools violence can be unhappy family, aggressive looks (mad-dogging), drug use, guns, and sex. If that happens teenagers get mad and do school shootings, theft, etc. Which leads to other teenagers getting mad and doing the same things and it gets bigger and bigger. That is why we need school management and if we do get school management's schools can be a safer place.

Women set the standards of emotional strength, physical endurance and bear the weight of not just their world on their shoulders but that of their children, husbands, and parents, adopted and immediate family. The women from The Escape and Uncle Tom's Cabin have much in common. Melinda and Eliza are both beautiful, both wanted sexually by white men, and both have given their hearts to their mates Glen and George. They both share the burden of slavery and the constant noose around their necks that could be yanked at any time.

Melinda is a woman that Mrs. Gaines envies, Draglines is sexually interested in, and fears for her life and that of her husband Glen. She is emotionally ill equipped to warrant off Dr. Gaines. It's a damned if you damned if you don't situation for her. If she does her master's wishes she is unfaithful to her husband. If she remains faithful to her husband she has no guarantee Dr. Gaines will not become discouraged and sell her or even kill her. Melinda borrows her courage from Glen, for he believes if they make the trial it proves that they deserve success.

Eliza, first and foremost is a mother. George fathers her son, Harry. Within the first few moments of reading you hear George is leaving for Canada to try to gain freedom from his master. Eliza soon finds out that her master, who has been said to be kind, has sold off her son as well as Uncle Tom. She makes her attempt at freedom to save her son's life from the auction block. Courage is what it takes to do the unbelievable. Eliza has the courage to risk not only her life but also her son's life for a chance at freedom.

Black women, especially during the slavery era are put into stereotypes.

The stereotypes of today differ from those of over a century ago. I believe Melinda, in that time, would be considered a Christian slave. She seems to be Christian in her beliefs as far as faithfulness towards Glen and the story seems to be centered on Christian beliefs. Melinda is put into a category where she is subservient to her master as well as her husband. I believe Melinda is passive and draws her strength from her husband. Eliza, on the other hand, could be considered passive until the life of her child takes priority. She takes matters into her own hands and escapes with her son to the north. She is faced with the barrier of ice and water. The only will, is the will to survive. Both these women feel the pressures of life squeezing out of them and do what they must to survive.

Women are a true testament to where life begins and ends. The lengths a woman will go for her child far outweigh the lengths they will go for themselves. The women of these stories show strength, endurance and love. It's a shame that the real lives of women like them are lost to our generation.

Assumptions

The human mind is (in my theory) is a complex "thing". Many people attempt to explain how the human mind operates. After reading some of the thoughts that Hume has, I seem to agree with a lot of what he is trying to explain. Hume, in my understanding, has come the closest to uncovering the operations of the mind.

Hume deals with a lot of what Descartes talks about in his writings. The difference between Descartes and Hume is that Hume seems to clear up some of the questions that Descartes leaves unanswered. One in particular, was that of doubting everything. Hume believed that you could doubt some things, but it was impossible to doubt everything. I completely agree with this reasoning. Doubting everything will never lead anywhere. The human mind can not just wipe out all its known memory and start over. The mind is always on. Descartes uses his beliefs to prove his own theories.

Another thing Hume did was throw normality out the window. He is saying, that everyday life can change tomorrow. The sun may not be shining in the morning; a stapler might not fall if dropped, or that a pool ball, being hit by another, may not move. I still believe the sun will shine tomorrow, but I see what Hume is trying to get at. Everything that is thought to be definite can change. There are no proven facts that say the sun will shine tomorrow, we just assume it must. To Hume, as I understand, assumptions are dangerous. Assumption is made up of what you believe and what you do not. I can believe a pool ball will move if hit, but I can not rule out the fact that it may not. It is simply probable that it will, but not definite. Hume says probabilities are what the mind is consuming during everyday life.

Science gives the facts because it has been tested and proven. Everyday life has not been proven by science. One example of a non-proven science is gravity. Gravity pulls objects towards the center of the earth. They have tested gravity, but there are no definite facts known to prove the theories. Who knows, maybe tomorrow gravity will release its pull and everything will simply begin floating. As a society, we assume gravity will not change, and that assumption is what clouds our minds of other possibilities. Hume does not seem to want people to change the way they think, he just wants people to acknowledge the other possibilities that are out there.

I believe Hume has a very good grasp on what he is talking about. I never thought about the possibility of looking out the window some morning, only to find the sun not shining. I really do not know how anyone could disprove his theories, because he seems to cover all the bases. Everything he says makes sense. I cannot say I agree with everything, but I cannot seem to put many of my objections into words. I can not say the sun will shine in the morning, or that the stapler will fall. What are my facts? Sure, the sun was shining yesterday and today, but tomorrow might be a different story.

Shirley Willis, Daycare Director, lights up when she talks about the Junior League's involvement at the Dumas Wesley Center, which provides services for senior citizens, neighborhood outreach programs, and day care for children eighteen months and older.

"Children like visitors," Willis explained. "It adds such a bit of spice to their day. Nobody from the League is in a hurry when they come here to volunteer their time. They bring excitement to each child's life."

The Junior League of Mobile has expanded its influence at Dumas in the past few years, adding Super Saturday field trips to the ballet and Exploreum, bringing an in-house zoo called Uncle Joe's to the corridors of Dumas's halls, and, most importantly, convincing children that reading is fun and essential to future success.

The Junior League has been instrumental in promoting the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program at Dumas. Willis was quick to point out a League volunteer who was reading a story to a group of preschool students on the day she was interviewed.

Custom Essays on Don Quixote's "Impossible Dream"

"Many League volunteers know exactly how to bring that shy child out of her or his shell. They ask them to turn the page when they read aloud to the group. Or they simply make them assistants to the learning process."

"They also let the children play with their hair and sit in their laps. This makes a very important impact because the kids aren't as frightened when they go to a doctor or dentist. They are used to being close to someone."

As she walked the preschool halls, Willis mentioned an even more profound message that the League was sending through its volunteerism at Dumas Wesley "We live in a mean world right now, with terrorism and racism. Having these volunteers here bridges that racial gap just a little bit each day because most of our students are African-American, and most volunteers here are white."

She then referred to the laminating machine and dye cut machine that the League helped provide for her daycare center. However, the director is most fond of relating JLM's assistance in funding the afternoon visits of a professional art teacher, who taught the Dumas residents arts and crafts. With pride, she led me to the cafeteria where children's art has been framed and mounted on the walls.

"This is my favorite," she says, pointing to particularly colorful montage of kaleidoscope images. "The kids are so proud when they see their work displayed like this."

Willis listed the League's involvement in other projects at Dumas. These include preschool computer pals, summer recreation, etiquette courses, and outreach counseling.

According to the Junior League website, a total of thirty-three dedicated women are placed in Dumas Wesley each year. They give hours of time to create a kaleidoscope of action that embraces diversity and the individual potential of every child.

Many times the title of a play suggests the theme of the story and many other themes. A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen, is one of many plays that display the relationship of the title to the theme.

A Doll's House is a play about Nora, a woman who experiences a moment of clarity in which she finds herself. In the play, Torvald, Nora's husband became sick and in order to help her husband regain his health, Nora secretly borrowed money without his permission, from Krogstad, the man who Torvald plans to fire. Krogstad threatens Nora that he will tell Torvald in desperation to keep his job. Nora pleads with Torvald to let Krogstad keep his job, but this only makes him want to fire Krogstad even more. Although Nora tries very hard to keep Torvald from receiving the blackmail letter from Krogstad, she fails to do so and he receives the letter. After reading the letter of blackmail, Torvald accuses Nora of being a liar and a hypocrite. When Krogstad returns the forged note, Torvald immediately forgives Nora. At this epiphanal moment, Nora realizes that her father and husband have treated her the same way, like a doll. Nora even realizes that her children were also being treated like dolls. Nora, with her new found independence, realizes that she has a sacred duty to herself and must educate herself away from Torvald and the children. This angers Torvald because he feels like Nora is abandoning her family her family. After all is said and done, both characters realize that a change has to be made to regain their marriage.

Ibsen's play has many themes that makes the common mind wonder. One theme is one of self-discovery, and in the play both characters have to discover themselves. Another theme Ibsen presents is one of morality. In the play Torvald tells Nora that her sacred duty is to her family first. She admits that most people would agree with him, showing that many of society's values are false. Despite Nora saying this, Nora believes that her sacred is to herself and then her family. The last theme that I will discuss is the role of women in this play. At the beginning of the play and halfway through, everything that Torvald says to Nora is right and so is everything that he does. He treats Nora like a child and he treats he like she doesn't know anything throughout the entire play. Nora finally realizes that this isn't the way that she wants to live and finally decides to move out and start a new life to find out who she really is. This brings about a question to men and women. What really is a woman's role in society according to the play? There are many other themes brought up in Ibsen's play, but these are only some important themes that I discovered in A Doll's House.

Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, is a very good play and obviously displays the relationship of the title to the theme. It also displays how the title of a work can create many themes in relation to the title of a work. The next time you are reading a work, see if the title is in comparison with the theme as it is in A Doll's House.

Education acts as the basis of society and reflects the culture from generation to generation. The school serves to induct children into society both formally and informally. Certain choices must be made in the realm of education as follows 1) What is the curriculum? ) What are the practical skills the student is supposed to acquire? ) What are the values? In America, a freedom for all exists, including the right of students to make choices. Thus, educators also have the free choice to be either conservative or liberal with their decisions. Some, such as schools in the Panhandle of Oklahoma, emphasize maintaining the status quo; whereas others, such as schools in Southern California, reflect transitional societies with wide ranging differences and a state of constant change. I have personally had the opportunity to experience such public school systems that are on opposite ends of the continuum. These experiences have caused me to have a paradigm shift in my personal educational theory that I use on a daily basis as a public high school teacher.

My life, my hope, my triumph is in God. His Word guides my thoughts and actions as I search its passages. The wisdom and instruction of the Holy Spirit empowers and directs me. He holds me accountable to His standard for me. He watches me with an intense love and concern, which results in explicit discipline designed for me. I present myself a living sacrifice, submitted to His control and authority.

Obedience and commitment to His ordained path does not allow me to follow others. I must guard my words and feelings irregardless of those around me. I grant Him the control of my tongue, the restraint of my hand, the imaginations of my mind and the observation of my eyes to the ways that others carry out their lives. Pulling strings, scheming and promoting my plans are met with rebuke. Others may brag about themselves and their accomplishments, but I cannot without feeling ashamed. I sense His disappointment when I waste the time and opportunities he provides for me to utilize for His glory.

God is infinitely Sovereign, and has a right to do as He pleases with me. He may let others be recognized, honored and advanced while I remain hidden in obscurity for His purpose. He may intend I produce a unique, fragrant fruit for His glory, which can only be developed in the shade. Others may work for Him and be acknowledged, while I faithfully serve without knowing the value of my efforts. Others may even get the credit for the work I do. It is not relevant to me. I look to Him alone for my fulfillment and assurance.

God wants me to live my life day to day, in utter dependence on Him. Far better than gold or an earthly legacy, I am privileged to watch Him provide for my needs day by day out of His vast, unseen treasury.

I am His creation for His purpose and glory. He owes me no explanation for His dealings with me. Deep in my heart I delight in His personal, private, intimate management of my life. I am loved and treasured.

The war in Iraq 60 words

It is clear from what has been going on in the news that the public has very mixed feelings and thoughts about the war which is occurring in Iraq but has either the party for or the party against war looked at the good reasons for each case and can confidently say that one side is wrong?

By going to war with Iraq Tony Blair and President George Bush both hope that they will succeed in the removal of Saddam Hussein and free the Iraq people which would be a good thing but why can't we do this without going to war?

By going to war we are going to be killing hundreds of Iraq, British and American troops and civilians who are innocent as well as committing an illegal act as there is no united nations mandate for the war and we would be interfering with a sovereign nation.

Order custom research paper on War

Some people state that this war will reduce the amount of poverty in Iraq, but is that not a long-term problem they have to over-come rather than one in which we have to bomb and kill for?

Saddam Hussein is said to have weapons of mass destruction but he has let American weapon inspectors in and they have claimed not to have found anything, but if they had been given a longer time to search they have produced some results but they were rushed by the Americans to produce a report.

Out of the 0 UK solders killed throughout the campaign so far 18 were killed through accident, and in one case British pilots were killed by friendly fire from the Americans

Also there is concern about Turkish troops entering Iraq because if they come n contact with the Kurds there may be fighting between the two forces and causing more coalition deaths.

The fact that the Iraqis have started to set fire to oil wells the pollution caused by this could have major effects on the environment.

The attempt to assassinate Saddam is illegal under an American Treaty. President Ford stated that it would be illegal for anyone to attempt to assassinate an enemy leader this surly means that it is illegal in war or not.

The fact that the Coalition has started the issue of weapons of mass destruction is strange because the several countries within the UN including America and Great Britain sold these weapons to him. At the time what did we think he would use those weapon for?

Although Tony Blair feels it is his moral duty to protect the country against Iraq, why has he left the issue of Korea, which have shown the world that they do have and are willing to use weapons of mass destruction. Also the fact that he has ignored a large majority of the nation by not taking into account the large public out cry about the war!

I think France has played a major issue in this campaign, because if they had not been so determined to use there veto against the second revaluation then it would not have given the coalition an easy exit from going down the UN route because I think they knew that they did not have the nine vote required to pass the notion.

If Saddam is over thrown and we try to divide Iraq into the several cultures with in it then we could see more bloodshed as we witness in Yugoslavia and wars started over territory which showed us the worst case of genocide since the second world war.

Set in England on the Yorkshire Moors in the 1th century, Emily Bronts novel Wuthering Heights is the story of lovers who try to withstand the separation of social classes and keep their love alive.

The main characters, Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff grew up on a middle class English countryside cottage called Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff was the servant and Catherine the daughter of the owner of Wuthering Heights. As children, Heathcliff and Catherine were the best of friends, a friendship which turned to love with the coming of age. Catherine married a man of the upper class society and was forced to end her love affair with Heathcliff. Catherine was happy in her marriage at first but later became overwhelmed with her desire to be with Heathcliff. She was forced to distinguish the difference between her love for Heathcliff and her love for her new life with money. In the end, Catherine Earnshaw¹s husband, Edgar Linton, died and Catherine finally realized that money and social class were not as fulfilling as her desire to have passion in her life, a desire which could only be met by Heathcliff. Throughout the book, Catherine tried to discover who she was and what exactly she wanted. In chapters 6 and 7, Catherine thought that she had finally discovered who she was and what she wanted. These chapters are the pinnacle of the story. It was the point in the book where the social classes were determined and Catherine¹s love for Heathcliff was forced to be supressed. Heathcliff and Catherine were still young and playing together innocently one day. This was before Catherine became a member of the upperclass society and realized that she could not love Heathcliff because of his social class. Heathcliff and Catherine wandered beyond the secure gates of Wuthering Heights to a large estate owned by Edgar Linton called Thrushcross Grange. They spyed through one of the windows and were caught by Linton. Heathcliff managed to escape in time but Catherine injured herself and was taken in by Linton¹s servants. Catherine stayed at Thrushcross Grange while Heathcliff return! ed to Wuthering Heights. She stayed at the estate for several weeks being nursed by Linton and his servants. The time she spent with Linton caused her to fall in love with him, causing her to permanently be separated from Heathcliff and the lower class life she used to know. Catherine became so absorbed in her new life that she forgot about Heathcliff and the pain he was feeling, until she realizes that there was something missing in her life. She finally knew that in order for her to become a whole person, she needed to be with her other half, Heathcliff.

Although there are many different important messages in this novel, the main value is the changes which occur in and between the characters. It is a love story which deals with the social classes and the supression of true feelings. Wuthering Heights is a tragedy because of what happens when the characters finally discover what was truely meant to be. Wuthering Heights bestowes a moral value onto the reader of discrimination and true heart-break.

In Lonne Elder III's Ceremonies In Dark Old Men, Mr. Russell Parker owns a barbershop that is on the verge of failing. His two sons, Theopolis and Bobby, are both active participators in the crime scene of Harlem. His daughter, Adele, works many hours a week to support her father and her two brothers. This cast carries us thru the action of this play. Three aspects of this play caught my attention as I read it. Adele's attitude throughout the play, Bobby's crimes, and the cliffhanger ending caught my attention more than the rest.

Adele's attitude throughout the play changes several times based upon the events that are happening around her. At the opening of the play, she's working hard to support her father and her brothers, and all they do in return is expect her to do more. Her attitude changes again when her brothers and father finally go into business for themselves producing corn whiskey. She undergoes another change of attitude when she finds out that her brother, Bobby, has been killed. Adele's attitudes add a lot of suspense to this play, and it helps to move the action from one act to another. Without it, I do not think the play would have had the same meaning and impact on me.

The crimes that Bobby commits during the course of the play increased my reaction to the play. He starts off with very small things. Occasionally stealing something from here and something from there, but with time, he ends up stealing a typewriter for his father's birthday just because Theo said that their dad would enjoy having a typewriter. When Theo starts producing corn whiskey, Bobby began breaking into various stores during the night and robbing them blind, stealing major items. This move up in burglary set the stage for the cliffhanger at the end of the play, and I feel that it was a necessary part of the play.

The end of this play was one major cliffhanger. I found out that Bobby was killed during a robbery. When Theo and Adele found out, they both were in total shock and neither of them spoke a word during the entire second scene of act two. I then found out that Mr. Jenkins had heard the news and was coming over to tell Mr. Parker what had happened. About this time, Mr. Parker comes back into the action and just keeps rambling on and on about the happenings and how he beat Mr. Jenkins in a game of checkers, completely unaware of what has happened to his son. The play just drops off with him asking, "Say, where's Bobby?" This cliffhanger was one of the best I had ever read, and it left me hanging there wondering what had happened.

In my opinion, this was one of the best plays I had ever read, and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone who ever asked me to give them something to read. The plot and storyline of the play was wonderful and had my attention from the very beginning, and the cliffhanger at the end just astonished me and left me thinking of all the possible things that could have happened when Mr. Parker found out about Bobby's death. I think he would have went into the basement and shot himself, but how will we ever know what truly happens?

Who We Are and What We Do

MassHousings Youth RAP program grew out of the concerns expressed by housing managers about the lack of resources for young people living in MassHousing developments in Boston neighborhoods. These were expressed at the Boston Inner City Task Force meetings, monthly meetings convened to bring together the parties most interested in a holistic approach to the issues of owning and managing inner city properties; and by management company liaisons active in MassHousings Tenant Assistance Program (TAP).

In the summer of 11, seven programs started up at MassHousing developments. Over 00 younger children participated in organized recreational activities and field trips, and 60 young people were employed in a variety of jobs. Some were day camp counselors, some were office workers. The majority of teens employed participated in on-site work crew programs.

The results of these efforts went far beyond the economic effect of these kids very small paychecks. The young people involved took a new interest in the place they live. The relationship between residents - kids and parents - and management became more positive. Neighbors noticed that young people were making a positive difference.

Buy custom Rap Lyrics and Antisocial Effects on Young People in Hong Kong term paper

In the summer of 1, the program went statewide and is now year-round.

The addition of VISTA volunteers to various sites over the years has enriched the mix of services available to children and families by drawing an unprecedented level of community resources to the sites. One example is the commitment of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to introduce young residents to the Academy and encouraging them to pursue their studies through a mentoring program.

The commitment of the management company or owner of one-third of the Youth RAP project cost ensures a serious approach to program design and management. In addiiton the program results in cost savings due to the noticeable reduction in graffiti, and the kids vigilance in preventing damages to the work theyve done in public areas.

The Youth RAP program has been recognized with an award from the National Council of State Housing Agencies and replicated by the Rhode Island Housing Finance Agency. As a component of MassHousings Building Communities campaign, Youth RAP also contributed to the Agencys being named a finalist in the Ford Foundations Innovation in State and Local Government 14 national competition.

Program types may be educational support (i.e., GED, tutorial, ESL, after-school); recreational activities; programs that will promote youth leadership, self-esteem, respect; cultural/educational activities; violence prevention/dispute resolution activities to promote safe buildings/neighborhoods; and part-time or summer jobs.

Students who attend community college are more likely than students at a 4 year institution. Community college students leave school for a variety of reasons including personal and financial difficulties, frustration, and being academically unprepared for college.

Community college students leave due to personal and financial difficulties reasons. If they have personal conflicts in their home life it may be distracting enough to make them drop out. Community college students are more likely to have a job, a family, and a home with responsibilities. Funding for college is also a concern. Many can not afford to pay for their schooling and books, and they think at the time when they are signing up for classes they would be able to afford the classes and realize with the cost of books and tuition that their families need the money more then they need their education. A way you might solve this is to be concerned and be aware of the students and their needs this is a first step to reducing students dropping out.

Many students are frustrated in college for many reasons being, some of the teachers give out to much work. When a student has a job, family and home to take care of many find it to be too much for them to do their work and make good grades. There is also always a possibility that the student does not always understand what the teacher is teaching to them. The students become frustrated and feel their is no point in going back to school if they can not understand what is being taught to them and resulting in them not making good grades. One way to help these students with this problem is steer students to advising and counseling. If you see a student who is having a problem, talk to him or her about it and, if necessary, recommend academic counseling.

Students that is academically unprepared for college is one of the major reasons most community college students drop out. Many people attend a community college for a short certificate or to brush up on their knowledge. If they are unprepared they may drop out. The typical community college student has been out of high school for several years and may not be ready for the challenges of academic coursework. The adjustment to a college is difficult because the teachers speak, in effect, a different language than students do. Students like to utilize active learning, need concrete, reality based facts, and tend to prefer learning facts to larger unifying concepts. To help students with this try to accommodate students learning styles.

After diagnosing my level of competence in empowering and delegating by taking the "Diagnostic Surveys for Empowering and Delegating" self-assessment in the text, I received a total score of 101 points. As indicated in the text, a score between 5 and 108 points suggests a need for improvement. Managers need to empower their subordinates and delegate responsibility so that they are energized and encouraged to do their tasks efficiently. Evidence indicates that employees if empowered, may become more productive, more satisfied and more innovative. By improving my empowering and delegating skills, I will be able to build a strong and productive work team and in turn, make my department more effective and dynamic.

As a system administrator, I am constantly assigning tasks to individual users or requesting information from Department Managers regarding new enhancements to the system. I am looked upon as a source of information for new enhancement requests or current system functionality. It has been quite difficult for me to delegate some tasks that I initiated and this has been an overwhelming burden especially during peak shipping times when my reporting skills are a priority. It is very crucial in my position to be able to delegate responsibility when necessary and foster the right creativity among key users who can then serve as role models for the other less-experience system users. I would like to be more empowering so that I can trust my power users to follow through with some assignments that would help them better understand and utilize the system features. I have outlined how I will execute my plan in the following steps

1. From next week, I will develop my knowledge and skills by reading more literature on Empowering and Delegating via the Internet and through articles in my management textbooks. This way I can familiarize myself with key concepts and develop techniques to use on my job and in my personal life.

. I will try to foster personal master experiences by assigning or delegating one task at a time to individuals (rather than giving them large tasks which sometimes become overwhelming). I would try to give each individual more responsibilities as they solve problems thus developing the needed skills to accomplish these tasks.

. For the most part, I will try to model success behaviors by demonstrating or pointing our key contributors at our monthly touchbase meetings highlighting their accomplishments.

4. I will continue to provide support and regular feedback so that my users are encouraged to ask more questions.

5. I will try to arouse "positive emotions" by scheduling more activities during our team meetings that facilitate friendship or partnering formation among members.

6. I will strive to provide the necessary training and development exercises as well as act as a technical and administrative support so that users have access to the necessary resources to do their tasks.

I would then like to re-evaluate my empowering and delegating competency at the end of the month by re-taking the same self-assessment in the text. My goal is to score above 1 points that would indicate I have improved.

Please note that this sample paper on Leading Work Teams is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Fire in Paradise

Kashmir the paradise…

Kashmir Controversy Lately, in the national news, Kashmir has been the hot topic. The intense religious, political, geographical, and economical debates have been heard all over the world, and yet, there has been no conclusion to this war between Pakistan and India. As an Indian myself, it is almost impossible to be unbiased in any kind of analysis of the subject, so I will not attempt to be impartial. There is a truth behind the Kashmir story, and the Indians and the Pakistanis must understand it. There are real people involved in this governmental affair, and being such an affair, one must realize that it is time to stop the killing and resolve this century-old war between the Muslims and the Hindus. Kashmir was once a tourists' paradise. The land has been known for centuries as the greenest and most temperate spot in the Himalayas. A land so beautiful, one could not even picture it in their dreams. Clear blue lakes reflect the snow-capped mountains, and lush forests of fir, pine, and spruce lining the rivers. The land was once the summer vacation spot for the British rajas as well as the wealthy Indians who wanted to escape the heat of the intense summers of India. However beautiful Kashmir is, the land is valued more than for it natural beauty but is considered to be a crown with priceless jewels. Kashmir is not a place to decide the superiority of religion but it is filled with people who want to have a peaceful life. Kashmir did go through so many bad memories but still remain a paradise so it should be left that way, in India.

Kashmir's history can be traced back as early as the second century when it was part of the Kushan Empire under control of Kanishka, and later part of China. After years of Buddhist and Hindu rule, Kashmir was converted to Islam in the late 14th century and became part of the Mogul Empire in 1586. The British installed a Hindu prince as ruler in 1846. The Muslim and Hindu peoples of Kashmir have lived in relative harmony and friendliness since the 1th century when Islam first became the majority religion of Kashmir. Occasionally however, there have been rulers and leaders who have had a narrow view of Islam, and have subjected Hindu minorities to great cruelties and discrimination. The current armed secessionist movement in Kashmir mostly derives inspiration from these people.

Custom writing service can write essays on kashmir

The root causes of the Kashmir problem are to be found in the events leading to the partition of the Indian subcontinent and the ideological perspectives of the All-India Muslim League (AIML) and the Indian National Congress (INC). The AIML stood for Muslim separation and the creation of a Muslim homeland while INC stood for the Hindu separation and the creation of Hindu homeland. During the British rule on South Asia, Kashmir was a large province having a majority of Muslim population. Kashmir also included a Hindu district named as Jammu in its territory. Due to the difference in religion, culture, social life, customs and opposite traditions and believes it was very hard to mix the both religions. At the time of partition, Kashmir had being ruled by a Hindu Maharaja (King) who was sharing Kashmir as a l

My operating definition of Organizational Behavior

In my second class I have been asked to prepare a paper discussing my operating definition of Organizational Behavior. In the following paragraphs, I will briefly present my understanding of Organizational Behavior. I will provide a definition of Organizational Behavior and mention some important elements of Organizational Behavior.

Organizational Behavior deals with the behavior of individuals and groups in organizations. The focus is on the continuous improvement of the effectiveness of organizations and of the members of organizations. Organizational Behavior is the study and application of knowledge about how people, individuals and groups, act in organizations. It does this by following a systematic approach.

Organizational Behavior analyzes and interprets people-organization relationships in terms of individuals, groups, organizational structures and social systems. It helps one to understand why people in organizations behave and do things the way they do. It encompasses a wide range of topics, such as human behavior, attitude development, change processes, conflict, interpersonal communication, leadership, learning, motivation, and teams. Its purpose is to build better relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives and social objectives.

Organizational Behavior studies behavior systematically by using scientific research methods. It studies human behavior in general and employee behavior in organizations in particular. It is a field of study that uses contributions from other behavioral disciplines, such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, and political science.

The first objective of Organizational Behavior is to realize that before behavior can be managed, one needs to understand the behavior's basis. The next objective is to identify processes and methods that can be used to improve behaviors, and to improve the effectiveness of organizational members and the organization itself. The final, overall objective is to develop and enhance one's behavioral and communication skills as an organizational member and as a current or future manager of an organization.

In conclusion, the final outcome of Organizational Behavior should be organizational performance excellence, individual satisfaction, and personal growth and development. These elements should build a foundation that an organization builds on and operates from. The model of Organizational Behavior adopted by an organization determines the type of leadership, communication, and group dynamics, and the degree of motivation among employees.

Perceptions of Authority

In 166 Hofling conducted an experiment whereby a fake drug was planted in the medicine cabinet of a hospital. The maximum dosage of the drug was clearly marked on the bottle. A confederate, acting as a doctor, gave a telephone instruction to a nurse to administer an exceeded dose of the drug to a patient. The nurse, without further discussion did this. When later questioned the nurse admitted her reservations but also her reluctance to question the request, as this was not acceptable by doctors.

Another experiment conducted was by Zimbardo in 17 whereby a group

of volunteers were selected to take part in a psychological study of prison life. The subjects were given either roles as prisoners or prison guards. Although weeks study was intended for the experiment, it was stopped within days due to the extreme behavior changes in both groups. It seemed that the roles of each became too realistic in that the guards began abusing their power and authority towards the prisoners and the prisoners themselves became very distressed and withdrawn.

Custom Essays on Perceptions of Authority

The findings in these experiments imply that we have been conditioned by society to accept orders from figures in roles of authority, and that we act, towards these figures,in a way that is expected of us with little regard to our own opinions, even if the consequences may be damaging. We perceive someone in a 'higher' role as someone who has more knowledge and responsibility therefore do not feel it acceptable to question their requests. This feeling may be reinforced by the adverse reaction of a 'questioned' authority figure.

Although a level of respect needs to be maintained and roles are important for a well functioning society, it seems that the status held by such authorities can inflict a disregard for the views and opinions for a 'lesser' status person.

The studies also show that acting in a way that is expected of you may strengthen the higher roles authority.

With regard to my views on the studies, I think that the Zimbargo experiment shows the extent to which a persons behavior can change when given a different role in society, even if this is a behavior they did not realise was present in themselves. With this in mind I feel that this experiment may be bordering on unethical. Although in this instance the subject was given a detailed explanation of the study, they would not be able to fully appreciate the psychological stress that may result from it, whereas the experimenter may have a fair idea of what could happen. So although the subject is not being deceived, I feel it would be unfair to expect them to have a real understanding. I feel a great deal of thought and respect needs to be given to the subjects own life after the experiment, and to any consequences that may occur from it. I understand that this may be unavoidable if the experimenter himself is unaware of any extreme psychological reactions.

With regard to the Hofling experiment, I do believe this to be unethical as the subject was unaware that an experiment was taking place and therefore gave no consent. Although no

Analysis of "The Road Not Taken"

"The Road Not Taken" represents a familiar moment everybodys lives where they must make a decision. Frost however provokes his audience to step back and weigh up their decisions, as he does when he "looked down one as far as I could" which emphasizes the importance he places in not only looking at the immediate consequences but also the long term consequences his decision could have. Frost uses an extended metaphor of diverging roads representing decisions in one's life. This is a common experience which we are confronted with every day; which choice to make and where that will eventually lead us. He uses first person which enhances the authenticity of the poet's voice, adding a sense of personal experience of his appreciation of nature. He makes free use of sentences, telling a story in a more colloquial manner which engages the audiences as they relate to Frost's position where he says "And sorry I could not travel both" which represents people's struggle to make a make a decision or choice as they can not take both alternatives. Frost's aim is also to encourage people to take risks by straying outside the norm and endeavouring to achieve something different which is illustrated when he says "I took the one less travelled by." However he emphasises to his audience to believe in their choices once made because "that has made all the difference."

Mending Wall

"Mending Wall" provokes the audience to question traditions that have become, over time, the unchallenged and the norm. Frost uses and extended metaphor of a wall dividing two neighbours, which through the forces of nature is broken and torn down each year. This wall is symbolic of boundaries which people set to achieve a sense of security. This sense of security is illustrated by the line "We keep the wall between us as we go" which supports the idea of keeping boundaries for one's own comfort. The line doesnt use a tone which supports why these boundaries are maintained instead, the tone reflects the idea again that the neighbours do not even recognize why they maintain their boundaries apart from tradition. Similarly Frost says "Good fences make good neighbours," again illustrating that men are trapped within a tradition they have never thought of questioning. He provokes the audience to question the necessity to have boundaries in the line "He is all pine and I am apple orchard," where despite differences be that of race, religion, language or age there is no need to block out people who are different. Yet this practice of separating has become so much a part of our culture and society that we conform to it without question. Frost uses an irregular rhythm which imitates the convosation in a slightly more colloquial tone which encourage the reader for their own personal response as well as using a lyrical format to express his regret.
