Hello my name is Francesco Spezzuoli and my life as an artist has been very short. It all started back when I was a very young boy growing up in the city of Florence, Italy in the sixteenth century. My father was a man who had great ambition for me to become a great artist, so I really did not have much of a choice. He was getting to old to take care of me anymore so he spent his last months finding an artist that would take me in as his apprentice. The artist was very well known, in Florence, to have some of the best apprentices in all of Italy, by the time they entered the profession.

When I went to the artist shop he asked me if I know anything about art. I said that I really did not know much, all I had done until that point was just draw for fun, but I as not very good at it. At his workshop he walked me around showing me what I would eventually be doing. The first thing that I did was clean up the shop everyday in the evening after all the work for the day had been done. I did that for a couple of days until I was comfortable around the shop. Then I really stated to work. My teacher had me drawing all kinds of different things that were in the shop. I drew for about six hours a day and the other rest of the time was watching the older apprentices work on parts of paintings and grind pigments for paints, until it was time for me to clean up.

After I watched how to grind pigments for a couple of weeks I finally got the opportunity to do it myself. The first time that I tried it, I did not do very well. My teacher yelled at me for spilling too much of the pigments. Along with that he also said I was not grinding the pigment up small enough, and if they were not ground up smaller then the paints would look all grainy. And a grainy painting would never go out of his shop. It took me quite a long time to get the pigments grinding just right, but when I finally get them to were my teacher wanted them he was very pleased at how I was coming along. But there was still one color I was not aloud to grind, marine blue. Because that particular color of blue was very expensive to use, my teacher was the only one to grind it up and the only one to use it in any type of painting.

Still during all of this time I was drawing and drawing and drawing, so much as to were I was starting to hate it, but the more I drew the better I become at it. My teacher said that I would never regret having to draw so much later on in my life. Then one day after I had been working on a drawing of Donatello's David, for what seemed like weeks, when I had finished it, I took it to my teacher to show him how far I had come in drawing, he looked at it, nodded his head, said good job and then throw it in the trash, and said I can still do better and not to show him until I did. So it was back to drawing for me again, to prove to my teacher that I could do it. Everyday I went to the sculpture and draw, and everyday I did something just a little bit different until I spent about one month drawing the sculpture. At that point I felt that I had done the best that I could have, I had been drawing and painting for five years now and had used up all of the different techniques that I know how. When I was done I had drawn David about ten different times. When I took it back to my teacher, to show him my final drawing, he smiled and said, "See I know you could do better". After I had finished David my teacher asked me the next day to come help him draw figures on a baptistery wall that was going to be the Virgin Mary and the Christ child as the main theme, with others sourding them.

I was a little nervice about drawing the figures for the fresco painting, just because I had never done anything like this before. But once I stared, I relaxed a lot and started to get into a zone and things just started to flow very easily. I know it was just the outlines of the figures but it was really interesting for me to do. Then when I was done with the outlines my teacher said that I had done the best that he had seen at my age, 17 years old, I was very happy to hear that. I also helped with the painting by grinding up the pigments that were going to be used on the fresco. And then I saw for the first time my teacher paint. To watch him paint was like magic. The way he mixed the paints and flowed them on to the wall was just great to watch. I know saw how far I still have to go, but I was well on my way to become a great artist.

After I had done a couple of figure outlines on some paintings I was given the chance to paint one figure, that was not of any importance, in a fresco on a wall in one of the Medici houses. This was a very big deal, this meant the my teacher felt that I had gotten my ability of painting good enough to actually paint someone in one of his frescos, and to be in the Medici's house is a true honor. The figure that I got was one in the back ground with his back turned away from the viewer getting a bucket of water out of a stream. My teacher said that if I did well on this one he would let me do another figure in his next painting. As I started to paint I messed up a couple of time, but all I had to do was get a little guidance from my teacher and paint over my mistake. In the end when I was done with the person, I was very pleased with my self for how well I had done, along with my teacher. So in doing so well I had the chance to do two figures on a small painting that he was going to work on in the shop.

After doing figure outlines and painting the not to important people for a couple of years, I then moved up to painting everything on the main figures except the hands, face, and ears, those are always left for the teacher to do. I was getting to the point were I wanted to make a piece to art work to be reviewed by the guild to see if I was ready to become a real artist. I spent quite a long time deciding what to do my piece on, along with the help on my teacher; I come up with my painting. It was going to be a painting of David to represent the icon that he was in the city of Florence. But I throw a twist in to the work; it was not the normal way that David was represented at that time. It had David's head cut off laying on the ground next to him, to symbolize how Rome had left there "daughter Republic" out to fend for itself when it come to defending against invaders.

I was not to highly liked by the guild members for doing this type of work, but they said that I had used the best technique for painting they had ever seen. The way that I had laid the paint down, it almost seamed like it would come to life, and that we as the viewers were looking at greatness. Even though the guild did not really like the painting they had no reason not to let me into the guild, other then the fact that my subject mater was not to favorable.

Once I was a guild member I still worked with my teacher on a couple of fresco painting that he had to do. As every month went on I keep getting better and better at my skill of painting. Then I got my first commission from a small church in Florence. They wanted a painting of the Madonna enthroned for an alter piece that they wanted made. I had to collaborate with the woodworker, to find out the design of the alter piece. Once we had finished designing it he spend about two months building the alter piece. After he was done with his part I painted the Madonna, it was a very elegant pretrial of her, she was in the middle with two angles on each side and the Holy Father in a hallow above her. When it was all completed the church was very pleased with the work.

Know I have written down my life store as an artist, even though there really is not much to it, I now feel that I can die with out having any regrets. To this day I do not really know what I am sick from. It has been plaguing me for months now and recently has kept me from doing what I love the most, drawing. All I have been able to do for the past month is stay alive long enough to write this. Today a doctor come by to see how I was doing and come to the conclusion that I had contracted plague and would be dead here soon. Winter was coming in and he said that I would not make it to see spring. I don't even think I will see winter this year, the coughing has gotten worse today and I'm feeling very weak. Lennie was described in a animal reference. On page three , fourth paragraph it says Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water and wiggled his fingers so the water arose in little splashes. This gives off a animal characteristic by using his hand to splash water but it says using his paw. A paw is a huge animal characteristic. Only animals have paws. The next one is on page twenty-two paragraph two it states that Lennie is strong as a bull. When people think of a bull they think of huge beast, with massive strength. Lennie also had massive strength. There just making it sound like he has even more strength. This last one really isn't said in the book but Lennie was kind of like a big teddy bear. All he wanted was something soft and reassuring. When you think of a teddy bear you think of being warm and fuzzy. In a way Lennie was nice and just wanted to be safe and have friends.

Lennie acted like a child throughout the book. But one specific time really stood out. When he was talking to Curley's wife, and he was talking how he likes to pet very soft and nice things. He was telling her about the mice, and the rabbits. This really made me feel like he was a child because children like to feel soft things. The soft materials I think would give Lennie the protection that he needs. He feels safe when he's with something soft. Also George controls Lennies life in a way. Like children following there parents defections. In one seen it really told me this was child like. When George went to the whore house lennie had to stay behind with Candy and Curley's wife. When parents go out with other grown ups they don't there child to tag along. This is a perfect example of child like qualities.

Candy and Crooks want to be a part in George's and Lennies plan . They probably had the same dream before too. They all want to be able to own there own land. Back then it was everyone's dream to have land and make money . But Crooks said that many people have came through and said they were going to have there own land but it never happens.

In this case a black person. A black person in this time were not respected and a crook isn't really respected either you see were I'm getting at. Curley didn't get his name for nothing, when he was first described with tightly curled hair.So as you can see names can be a big part in a story.

Well, it is not really rivals when you look back and you can see James puffing half way up the track. Judging from the amount of food in James's kitchen "Alison I don't think you have done him any favours here". James and I paired up for the -legged race. We were winning with our skills when two girls tried to overtake us. James tried to use his talents by knocking them down but missed and fell over. Well moving swiftly on James was talking to me and the teacher heard us and asked us what we were talking about. We both froze and just sat there for 5 mins speechless " that's a first for James". As she walks down Bond St., she passes by two window shops. The first, being that of a bookshop, displays a verse by Shakespeare "Fear no more the heat of the sun/ Nor the furious winter's rage." And the other one displaying dead fish on a block of ice. Clarissa thinks about life and exclaims "That is all ". She also thinks of her daughter Elizabeth and her tutor Miss Kilman. We come to know that Clarissa hates miss Kilman for introducing Elizabeth to religion.

Clarissa gets to the florist and in the mean while two incidents paralyzes the motion in the street. One is a very important looking motorcar and the other is an airplane soaring in the sky. Among those in the street were Septimus and his wife Lucrezia. The couple was on their way to see a Dr. Bradshaw.

Peter now annoyed and irritated wonders in the streets of London. He walks to Regent's Park, smokes a cigar and falls in a deep sleep. He sees a vision and wakes up. He recalls the scene at Bourton in which he knows that Clarissa would marry Richard and not him.

During this time Septimus and Rezia are in Regent's Park. Rezia leaves Septimus for a walk; feeling embarrassed because of the strangeness of her husband and asks herself why should she suffer. Peter thinking how London has changed and of Clarissa again, sees the couple arguing and thinks that it is a lovers' fight.

Now the narration shifts to Septimus. We are told his story of how he has volunteered to go to war. He wanted to be a good soldier, that is why he forbidded himself from feeling. In the aftermath of the war, he realizes that all his romantic believes about the war and patriotism are nothing but idiocy and that his lack of feeling is a great crime. Woolf here tells us the experience of Septimus with doctors, Dr. Holmes and Dr. Bradshaw. We kind of hear her own voice echoing in the background.

The couple heads to see Bradshaw and as they reach his clinic, the doctor knows immediately that Septimus is severely ill and that it is best if he be treated in an asylum. Rezia here feels angry and deserted.

The narration shifts now to tell us about Hugh Whitbread. Woolf ironically describes his aristocratic manners. He meets with Richard and goes to Lady Bruton's house for lunch. We know later that Lady Bruton has invited them both only to use them. She wanted to make use of Hugh's style in writing letters and of Richard's ideas as a politician to write a letter to the Times magazine about emigration to Canada. Also Lady Bruton intimidated Richard by telling him that Peter Walsh is in town. In fact, Richard did feel jealous and intended to tell Clarissa that he loves her in so many words when he goes home.

And as he intended he buys Clarissa some flowers and when he gets home he gives her the flowers but could not find the words to tell her that he loves her. In a way Clarissa understood. Very little happy time was spent together, and Richard goes off to mind his business. Clarissa now alone, wonders how she had never had any interest in politics. Her interest was always throwing parties. She feels great pleasure in it and thinks that it is her gift. It is her offering to the world, she thinks.

The door opens; it is Elizabeth telling her mother that she is going with Miss Kilman to the Army and Navy Surplus stores. Miss Kilman hates Clarissa as much as Clarissa hates Miss Kilman. Kilman finds refuge in religion while Clarissa finds the notion detestable and cruel. Clarissa feels that this lady wants to take her daughter from her. In fact Clarissa was right to think so because Miss Kilman's intention was to do influence Elizabeth and make her hate her mother.

Clarissa then thinks about love and religion. To her both create the urge to control and dominate. She overlooks the old lady next door and to her this lady is a symbol of independence and privacy.

Miss Kilman and Elizabeth are now at the stores drinking tea. Kilman wanted to pour her unhappiness onto Elizabeth to gain her sympathy. Although Elizabeth is influenced by Miss Kilman's ideas but she cannot but find her disgusting and overpowering. Elizabeth leaves Miss Kilman alone and wonders off home. Kilman now sits alone like a defeated beast and then heads for a sanctuary of religion. And Elizabeth wondering in the streets of London, reaches Strand, a working quarter of London, she thinks about Miss Kilman's ideas about the poor and about professions being open to women of her generation. Elizabeth does not want to be like her mother, throwing parties and caring only about societal conventions, but she aspires to have a career of her own.

Septimus now overlooking the Strand feels normal. He has overcome his fear some how and sits chatting normally with Rezia who is sewing a hat. All was well until Dr. Holmes barges in; he wanted to take Septimus to the asylum. Septimus wanted to escape this fate and found the window an only exist. He enjoys the rays of the sun till the last minute and then throws himself out.

Peter Walsh sees the ambulance carrying Septimus's body and considers it a sign of civility. When he reaches his hotel he finds that Clarissa has sent him a letter. He dines out and then decides to go to Clarissa's party after all. When he reaches the Dalloway's, he finds servants running around in final preparations for the party. He sees Clarissa nervous greeting her guest as they arrive. Clarissa is worried that the party will be a failure and feels defensive under Peter's critical eye. He thinks that all English people are snobs.

The prime minister is announced and then a Lady Rosseter who turned out to be no one but Sally Seton. Both Sally and Peter sit together talking. Clarissa sees them as a link to her past. The Bradshaws were also invited and they showed up late at the Party. Sir William Bradshaw tells Richard about some of his patients among those Septimus. And Lady Bradshaw tells Clarissa that Septimus has committed suicide that same evening. It is noted that all the characters of the novel are present at Clarissa's party, all but Rezia and Septimus.

Clarissa affected deeply by the news of Septimus's suicide, she retires to be alone in a room. She identifies herself with the pain of Septimus and then considers him as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself for her to have her parties.
