The emphasis on physical appearance that pervades American culture is marked by an unrealistic standard of beauty, and the superficiality that this standard promotes has a profound and negative impact on both men and women of all ages. The focus on physical appearance can be attributed to different factors, the media playing the most prevalent role. The media undoubtedly influences cultural perceptions of the definition of beauty by airing programs that specifically focus on attributing happiness and success to having the ideal outward appearance. For women, this consists of being abnormally skinny, tall, tan, and having long hair and a flawless complexion. The "perfect man" is characterized as having chiseled muscles, a tan body, and a dazzling smile. Television has taken these standards to create a new wave of programs that feature people with the previously mentioned qualities. In fact, a new show entitled Are You Hot? is specifically centered on judging the physical appearances of people who claim to be "hot" in order to find the sexiest man and woman in America. The purpose of the show Are you Hot? is merely worsening the problem of America's obsession with appearance, thus becoming the root of factors contributing to low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders.

The premise behind Are You Hot? is indeed a simple one. Each week, a set number of half-naked "beautiful people" strut their stuff in front of a panel of three celebrity judges, who (sometimes unkindly) offer their evaluation based on face, body and all around "sex appeal." The judges point out less than perfect flaws by shining a laser pointer on the areas that make the candidate "less hot." Earning the judges' approval is the ticket to the next round, until the pool is narrowed down to the "Sexiest Man and Woman in America." The two winners also split a cash prize of one-hundred thousand dollars. The rejected candidates are indicated by a blinking sign that reads, "NOT" causing them to live with the disgrace of not being "hot" enough. Are You Hot? sends the false message to viewers that physical appearance is the most important aspect of life, even over intelligence or career. In Naomi Wolf's essay, "The Beauty Myth," she points out that Americans, especially women, have become frighteningly preoccupied with achieving the stereotypical standards of beauty. Wolf notes, "During the past five years, consumer spending doubled, pornography became the main media category, ahead of legitimate films and records combined, and thirty-three thousand American women told researchers that they would rather lose ten to fifteen pounds than achieve any other goal" (48). She goes on to state, "Recent research consistently shows that inside the majority of the West's controlled, attractive, successful working women, there is a secret 'underlife' poisoning our freedom; infused with notions of beauty, it is a dark vein of self-hatred, physical obsession, terror of aging, and dread of lost control" (48). The epidemic of becoming physically "perfect" can particularly be blamed on shows like Are You Hot? due to the negative messages sent to viewers.

Are You Hot? blatantly supports gender stereotyping and encourages participants who appear to be the most "masculine" or "feminine". This television program is giving a negative connotation to these terms by attributing toughness, insensitivity, and a macho demeanor to being masculine, and being ditzy and submissive as feminine qualities. Male contestants often receive lower rankings if they have longer hair or small muscles, while female contestants score lower for having small breasts or broad shoulders. In her essay, "Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes," Holly Devor explores signals of masculinity and femininity and attempts to decipher what exactly these terms imply. She writes, "People use femininity or masculinity to claim and communicate their membership in their assigned, or chosen, sex or gender" (447). Taking the "masculine/feminine" stereotypes a step further, the contestants on Are You Hot? who describe their occupation or hobbies only do things to be considered "gender appropriate." For example, most women participants enjoy dancing, putting on makeup, and going on dates, while the men prefer lifting weights, wrestling, and playing sports. In her essay, Devor also states, "Members of both genders are believed to share many of the same human characteristics, although in different relative proportions; both males and females are popularly thought to be able to do many of the same things, but most activities are divided into suitable and unsuitable categories for each gender class. Persons who perform the activities considered appropriate for another gender will be expected to perform them poorly; if they succeed adequately, or even well, at their endeavors, they may be rewarded with ridicule or scorn for blurring the gender dividing line" (Devor, 448). For example, in one episode a male contestant was noted for plucking his uni-brow, thus receiving lower scores by the judges for excessive primping. In a nutshell, Are You Hot? has contestants who constitute the epitome of gender stereotypes in order to personify the ideal definition of beauty. Unfortunately intelligence, ability, or personality has nothing to do with their value as human beings.

Are You Hot? and other television programs similar to it cause a cultural focus on physical appearance, thus resulting in many injustices. Discrimination based upon appearance is still a concern in contemporary American culture and will be for a long time. Racism is a social and cultural problem rooted in prejudices about a group that is labeled by its physical characteristics, and the racism that is prevalent in today's society often results in violence or death. Although Are You Hot? does not promote racism, the majority of contestants are Caucasian, which sends a negative message to people of other races. Obese children and adults who do not conform to the American standard of beauty are often tormented and excluded from social activity. As technology progresses and further means of enhancing physical appearance become possible, there is a great potential for discrimination and other cultural implications. The media is making it impossible to shift the American standard of beauty to a more realistic image with programs like Are You Hot? that ultimately support taking drastic measures to arrive at "perfection." It is essential to realize the negative results the standards created by the media have on the American population, and the permanent damage that will take place if this epidemic is not put to a stop.

Edgar Allan Poe's literature consists of various literary devices such as personification, similes, allusions, imagery, and diction.

Poe's diction words are extremely intense and play a vital role in setting the mood, or tone of the story. It allows the reader to fully interpret his theme. In the poem "The Raven", Poe is overwhelmed by melancholy and omens of death. This poem depicts usage of diction with gothic words. Some of these gothic words are sorrow, cried, unhappy, and unmerciful, since he repeats these words continually in the poem. These words describe Poe's emotions about his forgotten long, lost love.

Poe's writings are known for gloomy and gothic imagery. For example, the story The Murders in the Rue Morgue, gives an intense description of the murders occurring in the house, and the murderer, the orangutan. "Dark bruises, deep indentations, and the body was fearfully mutilated", describes the death of the mother and child (Poe,). The poem "The Raven" uses a bird to teach a valuable lesson in life. This lesson was to never forget those loved ones in the past. The author's use of a raven as the communicator rather than a person brings a sense of dreariness to the story.

Poe's usage of personification is to help express emotions and interpret meaning in the writings. One of the personifications used in The Murders in the Rue Morgue is, "perhaps of a diseased, intelligence" (Poe,). This was used to explain the narrator's

Paris

admiration with Mr. Dupin's intelligence. In The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar. Poe personifies death, "…the encroachments of Death might be arrested by the process" (1).

The usage of allusions is vital to the themes of these writings. In "The Raven", Poe states, "Tell his soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn" (). Aidenn is an allusion of paradise. Poe is asking the raven, is his lost love in paradise? Yet, Poe already knows that the raven will simply answer "Nevermore" (6). This aspect heightens the grievance of the narrator.

These literary devices used in Poe's writings sometimes makes it quarrelsome to comprehend the meaning of these literatures, yet an advance explication of the text will suffice, and lead you to a broader understanding.

Advertising and Individuals

The article "The Cult you're in" by Kono Matsu depicts an individuals' opinion about the influence of advertising. These opinions describe advertising as a cult, which its' members don't feel they are in. Kono Matsu believes that influences from advertising have created "roles and behaviour patterns which we did not consciously choose." The foundation of this cult is, doing what everyone else does and not what's right for the particular individual whom is being influenced. I see advertising as a form of media, which challenges ones individuality. It has no specific role, but simply a goal to better the perception of a particular product or view. In the western world the creativity of advertising has no limits, no guidelines, or rules to follow. It reaches its audience by embracing their needs and wants in words, pictures, and sounds. The advertisers are appealing to the masses to encourage them to spend money to find contentment, which will bring them serendipity in their perceived tumultuous lives.

Many products in our society have successfully achieved their goal and improved the perception of that product. Beer, a form of alcohol, which does not improve ones health, and if abused, can be detrimental to ones life, is an example. Advertisers for such brewing companies have created an image of acceptance and camaraderie among groups of males. Approaching the Christmas season the advertising for children's' toys escalates. Children are entranced and parents succumb to the children's wants. In both of the examples given, the advertisers have appealed to the wants of a target market and been successful in doing so. We the consumers have been drawn in. Are we part of a cult? Do we think the same? Are we being individualistic?

Kono Matsu and I see the role of advertising in the same light. It is in our opinions on how advertising affects ones individual choices, where we differ. I agree, as teenagers are developing, their opinions and in learning what their personal needs and wants are, there is certain "cult" like influence (example peer pressure). However as one matures, they begin to develop their own individual needs and wants, and therefore dictate to themselves what consumer choices they will make.

Even after 88 deaths and 50 injuries attributed to defective Firestones tires, Firestone and Ford continue to point their finger at each other and refuse to be held liable. The question now is who is going to be held accountable and whether or not either company knew of the problems with the faulty tires even before it started to create this many issues. This liability issue has created one of the largest tire recalls ever and Firestone and Ford are being accused of knowing about the faulty tires.

In his article in Septembers edition of Newsweek, Kevin Naughton writes about what has become one of the biggest tire recalls ever. He tells a story about Lori Laurus who, on Labor Day 186, had her Firestone tire shred off her Ford Explorer causing her sports utility vehicle to flip. According to Naughton, Ms. Laurus is disgusted with both Firestone and Ford for not immediately looking into the defective tire issue. Along with many others, she believes that Firestone and Ford have known about these defective tires for years now.

According to Naughton, Firestone and Ford have started some damage control procedures by recalling 6.5 million defective Firestone ATX and Wilderness tires found primarily on Ford Explorers. Federal regulators suspect that these defective tires have led to deaths of 88 individuals in the US. Naughton also mentions that criminal charges are being considered against both companies in Venezuela. Regulators there accuse Firestone and Ford of a conspiracy against the users of Ford Explorers resulting in at least 46 deaths in Venezuela. According to Naughton, Ford did replace faulty Firestone tires in Venezuela months before the recall was announced in the US. His article also goes into detail about how many believe the companies have known about the faulty tires for years. Documents have been found showing reimbursement by Firestone to some consumers for the faulty ATX tires dating back to the beginning of 18. In 18, Ford noticed the peeling-tire tread problem on Ford Explore!

rs in Saudi Arabia, Asia and South America and quietly began replacing tires on almost fifty thousand foreign vehicles. It was only this past May that Ford shared this information with US regulators who now demand more documents on Fords oversea recalls.

Buy Firestone term paper

In a similar article in Time Magazine, Daniel Eisenberg also writes about the Firestone recall. Eisenberg tells a story about Jessica LeAnn Taylor of Mexia, Texas who died on October 18, 18 when the Ford Explorer that she was in that day rolled over because of a Firestone tire that had peeled off. Jessicas family turned to Attorney Randy Roberts to represent them in case against Firestone and Ford. According to Eisenberg, Ford has fought hard to keep its consumer complaints and lawsuits private until November , 1 when judge Sam Bournias ordered Firestone to hand over any complaints and other lawsuits, as well as employee depositions from those lawsuits, concerning its ATX and Wilderness tires nationwide.

In her article, Eisenberg presents some hard-core facts about the allegations against Firestone and Ford. According to Randy Roberts, there had been more than 1,100 incident reports and 57 lawsuits by February this year that Firestone and Ford has not disclosed. By spring of 1, Firestone has already logged 800 customer complaints of tread separation on its ATX and Wilderness tires. Congressional investigators have also connected 14 deaths in Saudi Arabia and surrounding Gulf States to some of the tires and found that Ford had been quietly replacing the defective tires in the summer of 1. Ford too may have had some fault in the design of the defective tires because it is said that Ford company engineers instead of making more substantial improvements to the SUVs stability, advised inflating the tires less than maximum level to decrease the chance of roller over. Ford recommended that the tires for their Explorers have a lower level of air pressure, 6 PSI compared wit!

h Firestones suggested 0 PSI, even though under inflated tires can in turn increase the risk of tread separation.

After further investigation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the ATX and Wilderness tires manufactured at the Firestone Decatur, Ill. Plant were where most of the recalled tires were made. Some of Firestones ex-employees testified that in the mid-10s there were some quality control problems at the plant. For example, in ordered to speed up the production process, the plant shortened the time spent curing, or cooking, the tires from 6 minutes to 16 minutes. It was also said that from 14-15 the assembly lines at the Firestone Decatur plant were in the hands of unskilled workers when the company had been through a bitter 10-month strike. In that time period, there were also some management changes and quality may have been scarified for quantity.

This matter has stirred up quite a bit of controversy about who essentially should be held liable for the damages that these tires have caused. One can called this a true product liability matter. One faulty tire incident should have sparked some sort of immediate investigation on the defective tire matter and immediate action should have been taken to remove the tires from the market. Instead, both companies decided to gamble with the idea of allowing these faulty tires to be distributed worldwide. In the end, lives have been lost and it was all due to pure negligence. One can define negligence as the failure to follow some generally accepted standard of care. For example, Firestone should have made sure that the routine inspections that the tires plants are put through should have been done thoroughly and Ford who has been in business with Firestone for almost a century should have done some follow up on these inspections to make sure that the tires were being produced at th!

e same level of standard. These faulty tires were clearly not put to the same level of standard as other Firestone tires or other tires of its kind.

One should not have any sympathy for companies like Firestone or Ford. It should be a crime for any company to allow a faulty product to be out on the market and for those manufacturers and sellers who knowingly allow the defective product to be sold on the market they should be charged with strict liability with criminal charges. The individuals who run these huge corporations should be held accountable for the harm that these products have and will cause, especially if they knowingly allow the product to be out on the market.

Because of their outright negligence and irresponsibility Firestone and Ford should both held liable for all the damages that these faulty tires have caused. It is a very serious matter when people lives are at risk and there really is no time to play a blame game. Reality is that both companies were at fault and if both companies do no take responsibility for this matter then more lives will be at risk and in the end both companies are looking at future economic hardships. Firestone, more so than Ford, has tarnished it reputation. Consumers may no longer have the same faith in their product.

Who is responsible?

Who is responsible for the crisis in the Middle East? Is it the Israelis or is it the Palestinians? Some people would like to think the Israelis are and some would like to think the Palestinians are responsible for the killing. However the truth is America, England, Israel, and the Palestinians are responsible. Sure you may think that can't be true but it is, you may not believe it just because the United States is allied with Israel or because some magazine says otherwise.

Both the Israelis and Palestinians are responsible for all this killing for many reasons. Israel in a sense started this entire crisis with the help of England and America after World War II. When World War II ended, there were a lot of homeless Jew's, so England and America had to put them somewhere and that somewhere was Palestine. England and America took Palestine and basically said, "all of you homeless Jews can go here to this country we created for you and all you Palestinians have to leave, all of this happened in 148".

As you can imagine this did not make the current residence of Palestine to happy. Yes the Palestinians did complain to England and America, but the response they got was "Don't come to us go to Israel and complain" and so they did. The Palestinians did not put up too much of a fight until an event almost two decades away would happen. This event was when Israel blitzed the Arabs in 167's six day war taking the Sinai and Gaza from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria and the West Bank from Jordan "Dickey ". Newsweek Authors Dickey and Klaidman say that the concept "Land For Peace" is the only way. The problem with this is you have refugees who where forced to leave their land in 167 and you also have Israelis who have lived there now for a long time who don't want to leave the land either. This is what makes the concept "Land for Peace" difficult. The situation is even more difficult now that Palestinian militants have been doing acts of terror and the Palestinian leader Arafat does nothing to stop them. Sure you can get people to the negotiating table but it is impossible for that to happen when you have Palestinian militants killing Israelis and then causing the Israeli Military to react.

Custom Essays on Who is Resonsiable for the middle east crisis?

There are many great peace plans in the works but none will ever see the light of the negotiating table if both sides don't lay down their weapons. There are some people in the public today that think the Israelis should just give back all the land from the 167 blitz. But like most people that actually sit down and think of the situation in the Middle East for a while you can't just give the land back, the Israelis have lived it on for decades. The only real make sense idea is to either give back half the land back that the Israelis took or let the Palestinians have back the land that the Israelis have not developed much on.

When all is said and done you still have to know who is really responsible for this crisis in the first place, England and America. Both England and America should step up to bat a lot more to create peace in the Middle East. America has been trying for along time to make a peace plan up that might work in the Middle East but it's not easy to make up peace plans when you don't have England helping out as much as they should with peace negotiations. If we are ever to see a peace in the Middle East America, England, Israel, and the Palestinians are going to have to put forward a lot more effort to avoid violence and realize that there are other ways than killing to solve problems.

In the years following 1865, there was a great shift towards a non - agrarian based economy. This affected industry in a number of ways. Due to this shift away from farming, there was a large influx of workers to the factories. All of the industrial work that was available was not just attractive to the workers already living in the country, but it was also attractive to people overseas looking to improve their quality of life. The four great waves of immigration occurred in the following periods, 184 - 57, 1878 - , 188 - 114, and 11 - 11. The largest mass of people came in the years following 180. Immigrants that came were from areas dotted all over the European map. There was a large demand for workers, so immigration laws did not place many restrictions on people coming to the United States as they do now. America had been considered a melting pot, but it was never mingled together into one undistinguishable mass, Dubofsky notes. He is simply stating the fact that there were always tensions between the various ethnic subdivisions.

This new breed of industrialism that the country was seeing was different than in past years. Historians state that industrialization caused the deskilling of many of the nation's trade based workers, and, in a sense this did occur. Home life and job life had once been interrelated, but with the dawn of the twentieth century, boundaries had been established that separated these once interrelated elements. The common laborer now reported to their boss, something that was not the usual scenario in previous years. Conditions were bleak for many people. There were significant wage increases in the years between 1860 and 180. Wages rose approximately 50 percent in these years, which is one of the largest increases in United States history. The average daily earning went from one dollar in 1860, to nearly one dollar and fifty cents in 180. The number of hours worked per day fell approximately seven percent, which rounded out the average working day to ten hours. Although the decrease in hours worked was miniscule, it still showed the shift in the way working conditions were going. The years after 180 did not show as dramatic an increase in wage growth, partially due to the first world war, and partially due to increasing prices of goods for domestic consumers during the war period.

Overall, the period from 1865 to 10 paved the way to normalcy for working conditions in the 10's. Normalcy was not quite what people would consider normal today, but by the standards of the early twentieth century, a certain balance had been created. The shift from the agrarian and trade based economy to the newer industrial economy was not something that was easily accomplished. People struggled for the grounds that were gained. These can be seen in the other overreaching themes contained within the text.

Labor unions in the mid to latter years of the nineteenth century to the early years of the twentieth century provided help and strife to the laboring class. The labor unions took on new approaches to getting what they wanted. Nationwide unions were established, as well as local unions, and secret labor societies. Some unions were violent in their approach, and some used peaceful methods to gain leads in establishing workers rights.

Unions had first begun in the latter years of the eighteenth century. They started out as small local groups that tried to bring together workers that were unified because of similar crafts. They did not play as substantial a role as unions did in the post Civil War period, but they did do their best to enhance workers rights and eliminate any bad blood between neighboring craftsmen. The National Labor Union was founded in the year 1866 with the intent to make workers come to terms with the modern issues of the day, such as the role of black labor in society, the spectrum of women's right, and the need for an eight hour work day. It originated as a non-capitalist utopian society that had the ideal that all men should be equal. The NLU failed to address the issues that is stated were of the utmost importance. It's leadership became extremely stagnant and it's initial causes for formation could no longer be seen in it's day to day workings. This is why the NLU failed not many years after its emergence.

The Molly Maguires were a group of Irish Americans who emerged in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal regions. They formed a secret society, that was similar to an underground labor union, that used violent means to achieve their goals. The Molly Maguire's had murdered police, federal agents, and mine attendants. They reached the peak of their power in 1875 when they successfully organized a public labor union. Once the union was organized, they successfully carried out a strike. The owner of the Reading Railroad, Franklin Gowen, had a vested interest in the Northern Pennsylvania mining industry. He hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to compile evidence against the Molly Maguires. Due to the information compiled from the spying efforts, ten Molly Maguires were hanged. This is one of Dubofsky's key examples of the use of violent means to improve working conditions.

Another labor union that was once a secret society was the Knights of Labor. The Knights were not so much a labor union as they were a reform society. They started secretly in the Philadelphia - Camden region and emerged nationally in 1878. The Knights were fairly insignificant in the beginning of their time, but this changed during the March of the Order of the Knights of Labor. Historians note that something like this had not been seen. The March took place to strike against railway building enterprises in the southwest. The march was a success in that it raised union membership substantially and provided a small labor victory over Jay Gould's railway building empire in the South. They struck a second time on Jay Gould's enterprise, but this attempt was not successful. The Knights of Labor collapsed for a number of reasons, but the main reason was the lack of leadership, and the support from the industrial heartland which it once thrived on.

Samuel Gompers is one of the key figures of American labor history. He, along with P.J. McGuire, founded the American Federation of Labor. The AFL was run much differently than the Knights of Labor. This is the reason why the AFL was much more successful than it's counterpart, the Knights of Labor. Besides the fact that the AFL had an insightful leader, Samuel Gompers, the AFL served the interests of it's member's rather well, something the Knights of Labor had failed to do. The AFL's goals lied within the improvement of working conditions, such as higher wages, shorter hours, and greater freedoms. Gompers did not choose to align himself with any socialist theories, which he felt could harm the greater interests of the AFL. The AFL and the Knights of Labor had a common bond in their lack of financial support.

Another movement towards labor reforms was seen in the thoughts of Frederick W. Taylor. Taylor's beliefs differed from that of his counterparts that were involved with labor unions. Taylor did not believe in unions. He believed that higher wages for workers would make them give up their want for control in work habits. This satisfied both employers and employees in Taylor's eyes. Many analysts stated that this made the worker into some kind of robot. It truly took away any human aspect that any worker was considered to have. Taylor's way of thinking did make sense in efficiency standards, but it did dull the efforts put forth by the many that struggled to gain worker rights in the years previous.

As a whole, the labor unions did make a difference in working conditions. Their main weapons were the strike and the lockout, which were not one hundred percent effective. Between the years 1881 and 180, approximately ,668 strikes had occurred. The employer's took different means to stop the striking, such as the use of strikebreakers, workers that had no union connections that would work in place of the workers that were striking. These means were sometimes successful, but they never truly provided the efficiency that the striking workers could provide. Racial tensions within unions was also a problem that was never fully solved. Some labor union leaders saw no part for African American workers in unions and others did. Even if African American workers were in unions, it caused tensions between the whites and other immigrants that were in the unions. Racial tensions never did cease, as was seen in the case of the Chicago Race Riots . Employers often pitted black workers against white workers to stop striking and lockouts.

As the years passed, national and local unions thrived and failed. Some unions such as the AFL managed to stay organized into the 10's. The time of the great war came and it appeared that all unions were generally uniform in their cause. The unions no longer carried any utopian overtones that had hindered developments in the past. The fight for an eight hour work day remained apparent in all unions. The fight for increase in wages was also something that was seen in most unions.

The United States entrance into the World War caused changes in many of the labor happenings of the time. Samuel Gompers was appointed a position in a national office. Woodrow Wilson, the president during this period, saw the need for reforms in labor. Violence was being used to suppress strikes in the copper regions in the Southwest. The striking was truly hurting the economy at this time because copper was extremely important for the war effort. In the last year of the war, Wilson created the National War Labor Board. In exchange for the promise of no striking, Wilson would grant the eight hour work day, fixed wages in accordance with the locality, equal pay for women, and the right to join a union. The board went defunct ten months after the war ended. The board went defunct at a time when it was needed most. The National War Labor Board had promised so much for the common laborer.

Many individuals dedicated their whole life to fighting for the labor cause. It was a worthy and just cause that has impact on people living today. The powers that were used in the Industrialist period, such as the strike, are still used today. There are no longer riots along with the strikes, or the use of real means of violence against our employers. Uniformity exists today in working conditions. There has been the establishment of a minimum wage, the eight hour work day, and workers rights. Unions are still in existence today, some having more bearing than others, and they no longer embody any form of utopian ideals. They strictly bargain for workers rights. Workers have always struggled, whether they were self employed, a farmer, or working under a boss. Work will always have to be done, but it is in the manner in which it is regulated that affects the whole of society.
