The Watergate Affair

The Watergate affair was the most significant scandal in United States governmental history. Watergate is defined as a scandal involving abuse of power by public officials, violation of the public trust, and attempted obstruction of justice. The Watergate scandal is named after the building complex in Washington D.C., which was the site of the illegal activities that took place in 17. In this essay I will explain what Watergate was, a few of the key players (many too numerous to mention), and the end result of the people involved.

Watergate all started on June 17, 17 when five men attempted to break in to the Democratic national headquarters in Washington's Watergate complex. The men were arrested after police were notified from a security guard, and were in possession of cameras and electronic surveillance equipment. They were suspected of attempting to tap the telephones there in order to gain the upper-hand information of the Democratic campaign. The men were tried and convicted in a federal court, but the judge, John Sirica suspected the major cover-up of a possible national conspiracy. Sirica later received a letter from one of the burglars, James McCord which stated that there was definitely a cover-up. This letter led to a nationwide eruption and the trust and tolerance for politicians greatly declined.

The five burglars were sent to jail in January of 17. White House counsel John Dean attempted to buy the men's silence with 400,000 dollars of "hush" money and the possibility of presidential pardons. Instead the burglars began to talk and the Nixon administration was being pushed against a wall. A separate committee was started to investigate and John Dean began to sweat. Dean told Nixon that (in my revised words) "We're in deep crap". Nixon sensed that his high officials were going to break at any moment so he fired Dean, chief domestic advisor John Ehrlichman, and White House Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman.

(The only thing they were vital to was the skin on his rear end) Nixon then told Attorney General Elliot Richardson to dismiss Cox, but Richardson refused and resigned, as did Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus. Cox's successor, Leon Jaworski was appointed by Nixon and was given the tapes, and Jaworski gave the tapes to Judge Sirica. Some of the tapes were missing and one of the tapes had a mysterious 18½ minute gap. The gap was part of five separate erasures.

Although the tapes, the break-in, and the cover up were a large part of the Watergate affair, they were not all of it. During Nixon's term the government was very secretive and this was a result of Nixon's ways. Before all of the break-in stories, there were other issues questioning Nixon's morals. In 16 there was an article in the New York Times talking about a secret bombing of Cambodia. So illegally the FBI taped conversations secretly of some National Security Council members, in which the source was never found. This was the way Nixon had things handled and he is most commonly known for bone-head things like this. What did hurt Nixon was John Dean's testimony in May of 17. Dean implicated President Nixon in the cover-up which was of course denied by Nixon. (This is also when Butterfield gave his testimony about the Oval Office recordings) In March of 174, Haldeman, Ehrlichman, and five other White House officials were indicted for their part in the cover-up and named Nixon as an "unindicted co-conspirator." Later that month Leon Jaworski requested Nixon to turn over written transcripts of 4 more tapes in which he did. The tapes revealed an overwhelming concern with punishing political opponents and hinder the Watergate investigation.

In May of 174 Jaworski again requested more tapes as evidence in the cases against the indicted officials. Nixon refused, but the Supreme Court voted 8-0 that Nixon must turn over the tapes. On July -0, 174, the House Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment, charging Nixon with misusing his power, obstructing justice in the Watergate affair, and defying Judiciary Committee subpoenas.

Soon after Watergate began to come up to the surface, investigators uncovered some more illegal activities. (surprise) They found out about the "plumbers" named for stopping leaks to the press about Watergate. Ehrlichman and White House Special Counsel Charles Colson were indicted because of another incident of burglary in an attempt to ruin Daniel Ellsbergs reputation as a war hero. Ellsberg publicized the Pentagon Papers which were classified Department of Defense documents which detailed so many American blunders and misjudgments that the commissioner Robert McNamara said, "...they could hang people for what is in there." The burglars attempted to get damaging information on Ellsberg from his psychiatrist's office to ruin him for what he did to the Nixon administration. In fact, by the summer of 174 Senator Barry Goldwater informed Nixon that he had only the support of 15 Senators nationwide. Finally, Nixon ended his disrespectful term as U.S. President after facing certain impeachment, by resigning on August , 174. He was the first President to do so, but what the heck, he was the first President to do a lot of things. As usual, the top dog lucks out because one month later, Nixon's successor Gerald Ford pardoned him of all crimes he may have committed while in office. Nixon escaped prosecution whereas, his buddies in all of this served time and lost all respect.

In the aftermath of the Watergate scandal, 5 members of the Nixon administration went to jail, while he denied any involvement. I find it funny how all of his closest friends and advisors went to jail and plotted this all by themselves but he had no part in it. They were all behind bars while he is retired at his home in California sucking on a dry martini. I don't think that the United States government will ever have the trust completely restored from its citizens after Watergate. Why Nicholas II survived 105?

Up to the end of the 1th century, Russia was an autocratic country. It was ruled by an autocratic Czar. His will was the sole source of law, of taxation and justice. Another important issue was the fact that revolutions occurred as well among local groups which seeked the obtaining of local autonomy rather than the overthrowing of the Czar. Nicholas II managed to make concessions at the right time. With the promulgation of the October Manifesto, concerted opposition to the government melted away. The landed proprietors, the liberals and the less radical socialists were at least partially satisfied. They were afraid of going too far. Only the radical socialists, radical workers and hungry peasants continued the revolution. By establishing certain rights concerning freedom of speech and writing he managed to tame the crowd. Most important of all thus was the proclamation for the construction of the first Duma, which despite it gave no actual rights to the working class, at least satisfied partly the need for representation.

Last but not least a factor that played a role of equal importance to the above was the help of the army. At the time (before the events of the First World War occurred) the dynasty retained the support of the bureaucracy, the major part of the army (Kozaks) and the nobility. Thus the Czar was able to suppress the strikes and the revolts after the division had appeared among the opposition forces. In short, the opposition forces, divided, unprepared to seize power, unable to represent the wishes of the peasants and the workers, failed to overthrow the decadent and demoralized dynasty, which retained the support of the nobles, the bureaucrats and the army. Only in 117 (during the war, when Nicholas II was sent to the front) did the army lost its faith to the Czar while not only did the war lead to nothing but also the Czar didn't manage to retain his soldier's good opinion, as he was the only man to blame for the defeats.

Looking at more of a gray area, Wal-Mart is generally viewed as an ethically company but even they have

a reputation for unfair competition. Wal-Mart has a marketing plan that targets smaller cities with large-

volume discount stores. While this may not appear to be unfair on its face, many people have felt its

negative effect. When Wal-Mart moves into a market, many of its smaller competitors go out of business.

Small business in small towns cant compete with the prices, availability, or selection of a huge

conglomerate like Wal-Mart. People in the towns dont have much of a choice. Pay more for less or pay

less for more? Not are hard decision. But the ultimate effect is that many small business cant survive the

recent trip. I was in the market to buy a Ford Explorer. The prices seemed to be about the same in these

two markets. My wife and I decided to drive to Oklahoma City to look further. When we got there, the

first dealership that we saw had over thirty Explorers on the front lot with a recent shipment of more in the

back. Compared to the Altus dealership which had two. Immediately, I noticed that the price at that

dealership was $1,00 less than the same model with the same package in Altus. Both stickers said the

price quoted was the manufacturers suggested retail price. Already over $1,000 to the good, we decided to

look further. We found four Explorers that had an additional mark down of $,000. This was because of

an engine style in the process of being phased out that had an additional rebate. Looking at the two

different model from Oklahoma City and Altus, we!

would save $,00 by buying here. We decided to look no further. We selected the color and bought our

car.

Overall, we had a very pleasant experience but what about the people who buy from the Altus dealership

and spend over $,000 more? Are they being unethically taken advantage of? Thats a hard call to make. I

teach an equal opportunity class on base and during that class someone inevitably brings up car prices in

Altus as being unfair. Are these prices unfair or is it just the law of supply and demand? Two thousand

dollars that I saved in Oklahoma City were because that model car wasnt available to the dealership in

Altus. That difference can be easily excusable. The other $1,00, I have a harder time with. I took

detailed notes and both stickers were basically identical with the exception of price. Each indicated a

different manufacturers suggested retail price. Ethically, I think the line has been crossed. There cant be

two different manufacturers suggested retail prices for the same car. One has to be wrong. I had a good

experience buying this car but not ever!

people into buying or spending more than they can afford. Those are the kind of ethical issues that cant be

legislated.

Reading through the ethics cases reminded me of my car buying experience because just like in the cases,

there is no clear cut answer. In ethics, one would think that there is right and wrong but in real life cases of

ethics in business there is not. There is no black and white answer only millions of shades of gray. Given

the case of junk faxes, what is so wrong about sending an unsolicited advertisement to someone. I get them

almost every day in my mailbox. It seems like a reasonable response but the differences are great. The

junk fax ties up an important communication tool of the company and the costs are split between the sender

and the recipient without the recipients permission. The cost to the sender is simply the cost of a telephone

call. While the cost to the recipient is the cost of paper, ink, and power to receive the call in addition to the

loss of use of the machine during reception. I wouldnt want to get junk mail in my mailbox, if I had to pay

for it!

But is this practice of junk faxing wrong? I say no. Ethically, I feel that its not wrong if the faxes are

reasonable in length and company has a process to quit sending faxes if a recipient requests. I was the

recipient of one junk fax. It came into my squadron office here on Altus Air Force Base. It was an

advertisement to buy office supplies. Now there is no law, either civil or military, that prohibits this but I

realized this isnt something that the Air Force should pay for. I took the fax to the legal office and they

drafted a letter to request that it be stopped. They stated that if any more faxes were received, Altus AFB

would no longer do business with this company. This was motivation enough for them not to do it. We

never received another fax.

With business, that is how the system must work. If the pursuit of the bottom line goes to far, then the

bottom line must be threatened. I dont think there is anything ethically wrong with many business

practices. Its all a matter of people being satisfied with the product that they are getting. If they are

satisfied, the business will flourish. If not, it will suffer. That is probably the best way to measure ethics in

management. Overall, I think the status of ethics is management needs some work. There are very good

companies out there that charge a fair price to make a reasonable profit but there are many business in place

that prey on the weak and poor.

The focus on physical appearance can be attributed to different factors, the media playing the most prevalent role. The media undoubtedly influences cultural perceptions of the definition of beauty by airing programs that specifically focus on attributing happiness and success to having the ideal outward appearance. For women, this consists of being abnormally skinny, tall, tan, and having long hair and a flawless complexion. The "perfect man" is characterized as having chiseled muscles, a tan body, and a dazzling smile. Television has taken these standards to create a new wave of programs that feature people with the previously mentioned qualities. In fact, a new show entitled Are You Hot? is specifically centered on judging the physical appearances of people who claim to be "hot" in order to find the sexiest man and woman in America. The purpose of the show Are you Hot? is merely worsening the problem of America's obsession with appearance, thus becoming the root of factors contributing to low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders.

The premise behind Are You Hot? is indeed a simple one. Each week, a set number of half-naked "beautiful people" strut their stuff in front of a panel of three celebrity judges, who (sometimes unkindly) offer their evaluation based on face, body and all around "sex appeal." The judges point out less than perfect flaws by shining a laser pointer on the areas that make the candidate "less hot." Earning the judges' approval is the ticket to the next round, until the pool is narrowed down to the "Sexiest Man and Woman in America." The two winners also split a cash prize of one-hundred thousand dollars. The rejected candidates are indicated by a blinking sign that reads, "NOT" causing them to live with the disgrace of not being "hot" enough. Are You Hot? sends the false message to viewers that physical appearance is the most important aspect of life, even over intelligence or career. In Naomi Wolf's essay, "The Beauty Myth," she points out that Americans, especially women, have become frighteningly preoccupied with achieving the stereotypical standards of beauty. Wolf notes, "During the past five years, consumer spending doubled, pornography became the main media category, ahead of legitimate films and records combined, and thirty-three thousand American women told researchers that they would rather lose ten to fifteen pounds than achieve any other goal" (48). She goes on to state, "Recent research consistently shows that inside the majority of the West's controlled, attractive, successful working women, there is a secret 'underlife' poisoning our freedom; infused with notions of beauty, it is a dark vein of self-hatred, physical obsession, terror of aging, and dread of lost control" (48). The epidemic of becoming physically "perfect" can particularly be blamed on shows like Are You Hot? due to the negative messages sent to viewers.

Are You Hot? blatantly supports gender stereotyping and encourages participants who appear to be the most "masculine" or "feminine". This television program is giving a negative connotation to these terms by attributing toughness, insensitivity, and a macho demeanor to being masculine, and being ditzy and submissive as feminine qualities. Male contestants often receive lower rankings if they have longer hair or small muscles, while female contestants score lower for having small breasts or broad shoulders. In her essay, "Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes," Holly Devor explores signals of masculinity and femininity and attempts to decipher what exactly these terms imply. She writes, "People use femininity or masculinity to claim and communicate their membership in their assigned, or chosen, sex or gender" (447). Taking the "masculine/feminine" stereotypes a step further, the contestants on Are You Hot? who describe their occupation or hobbies only do things to be considered "gender appropriate." For example, most women participants enjoy dancing, putting on makeup, and going on dates, while the men prefer lifting weights, wrestling, and playing sports. In her essay, Devor also states, "Members of both genders are believed to share many of the same human characteristics, although in different relative proportions; both males and females are popularly thought to be able to do many of the same things, but most activities are divided into suitable and unsuitable categories for each gender class. Persons who perform the activities considered appropriate for another gender will be expected to perform them poorly; if they succeed adequately, or even well, at their endeavors, they may be rewarded with ridicule or scorn for blurring the gender dividing line" (Devor, 448). For example, in one episode a male contestant was noted for plucking his uni-brow, thus receiving lower scores by the judges for excessive primping. In a nutshell, Are You Hot? has contestants who constitute the epitome of gender stereotypes in order to personify the ideal definition of beauty. Unfortunately intelligence, ability, or personality has nothing to do with their value as human beings.

Are You Hot? and other television programs similar to it cause a cultural focus on physical appearance, thus resulting in many injustices. Discrimination based upon appearance is still a concern in contemporary American culture and will be for a long time. Racism is a social and cultural problem rooted in prejudices about a group that is labeled by its physical characteristics, and the racism that is prevalent in today's society often results in violence or death. Although Are You Hot? does not promote racism, the majority of contestants are Caucasian, which sends a negative message to people of other races. Obese children and adults who do not conform to the American standard of beauty are often tormented and excluded from social activity. As technology progresses and further means of enhancing physical appearance become possible, there is a great potential for discrimination and other cultural implications. The media is making it impossible to shift the American standard of beauty to a more realistic image with programs like Are You Hot? that ultimately support taking drastic measures to arrive at "perfection." It is essential to realize the negative results the standards created by the media have on the American population, and the permanent damage that will take place if this epidemic is not put to a stop.
