Letter Writting

Homework

Dear Graham

Hello, I'm finally able to write to you as I promised. We arrived to Prague two days ago and i wait 'till today to write this letter for you because i really wanted to have something to write about. We arrived to the most beautiful and charming city in Europe. I cant hardly wait to show you all the pictures i have taken of the city. I'll try to resume this two days in one or two parographs so that you wont get bored at all reading my letter.

We arrived saturday morning at 7 am, he went to our hotel, leave our stuff and went to the city castle. The castle is a piece of art, i can't describe its beauty. The architecture is just amazing and it's huge castle. We walked around the castle and its sorroundings like the alquemist's street, it's known that the king had a special street in his castle just for alquimists, I assume he really wanted to discover how to make gold. Then we went to the Cathedral, i think it was one of the most peaceful moments i have ever had. The cathedral has a Gothic architecture wich gives a special environment once you're inside, it's like being in an other time completely out of the ordinary. After that we went for a nice walk beside the Moldav river, then at pm we went for a nice walk in the city center and we eat Italian Food.

On Sunday we woke up really late, about...11am. He visited Kafka's house and we walked around the jewish neighborhod. There we went to the old jewish cementery...it was really creepy though...i just don't like cementeries. We also went to a very old synagogue (the Rabi Maharal's synagogue) and when we walked out of the synagogue we saw a clock with leters, the interesting part of this clock is that the letters are in hebrew and that the clock goes to the other way. We returned to the hotel because we were very tired and we just sleep for hours. Well, i'mnow awake writting to you but my friend is still sleeping, she's even snoring like a lion. Well....we're planning to visit Terezin...it was a ghetto in the II world war and we also want to visit some museums and walk more around the city as well.

I think i'll have an unforgetable trip with my friend. Now i'm thinking about my return and i just want to stay here in this city but everything has an end and thats the ugly part of a trip, it always ends.

Introduction

Following on from my pervious assignment MN76 "IS COLLEGE ATHLETICS A BUSINESS MARKET OR A SPORT? You come to the other side of Sport Professionalism! Like college Athletics the ecomicial and the company's gains or status have become the bottom line for professional sporting organizations. The nogiations of million dollar salary contracts, television and advertising contracts, the infurance of mass media and the status of the teams within the league and on the stock exchange becomes the only objective and goal for these organizations. With the ownership of these orgainsations by executive businessmen the bottom-line is always the answer not the fun of the game. Are professional sporting clubs a business organisation? Do we still play the game or are we an employee of a million-dollar business organization? How is the game really played?

Professional Athlete Salaries

Most people in America feel that pro athletes salaries are too high. Current sports salaries are reaching astronomical figures. Players are signing 50 million-dollar contracts and up just because they happen to be pretty good at hitting a baseball or kicking a ball.

It's a business decision. Fans pay to watch the game. Numerous companies pay the team to endorse various products. Clothing and apparel companies pay the team to make jerseys, shirts, hats, etc. Different broadcasting corporations pay the team to cover and air the game. All of this money goes to the owner of the particular team. The owners, in turn, then pay their players their salaries. The economics involved in sports today hurts the fans, some teams, and the leagues themselves. The sports leagues can actually be hurt by there own actions. If players were not being paid so much money then organizations would not have to charge such incredibly high prices for tickets to the games and for concessions.

The NBA lockout a couple of years ago is a prime example of money ruining what looked to be a fine year. The owners locked out the players until they settled on a bunch of points with regards to salary caps. These types of strikes obviously hurt the sport.

John Donovan from CNN/SI Wedsite summed it up perfectly, You have greedy owners and you have greedy players, all of them fighting over absurd amounts of money. And, in the end, its the fans who get screwed.

One dispute between the two sides is the Larry Bird Exception. This rule basically allows teams to ignore the salary cap and re sign a veteran at any price. Michael Jordan alone made 6 million more than the team salary cap. The owners want this modified because some teams where just too good. The players didnt want to budge on this issue. Their side on this is that there is no middle class because of the salary cap. This is a very good point. Salary caps are important to keep teams close, but that leaves great players making millions while the good players make too little. The owners are trying to get the most money out of their team. Money problems have and will continue to scar sports and more importantly the fans. What should you tell a little kid who loves basketball, when his favorite player is playing golf somewhere instead. High price players effect fans more than you might think. The Los Angeles Lakers offered Shaquille ONeal $1 million over seven years. The deal will help push tickets for the so-called seats at the LA Forum from $ to $0. That is ridiculous, now the average family has to spend a fortune just to go see a game. Relocation seems to be the new thing for teams to do. In order for a team to be good they must buy good players. If they dont make a profit they must move. The best example of this would be the Cleveland Browns. Despite having some of the most loyal fans in the world, the owner decided to move to Baltimore, where they could hopefully make a profit. Once again money problems stemming from high salaries comes between fans and their beloved game. If the trend in sports doesnt change, I would have to think that attendance is going to drop. Sports popularity is soaring but more and more people are going to have to watch the games on the TV. Prices for tickets are rising pretty steadily and there are more and more premium seats being placed around the arenas. How can the average family afford to go to a game when for 4 people it will cost well over $100. And then you can factor in the absurd prices for food and drinks. Pro sports may soon become entertainment for the rich. The way sports are set up today money is a huge part of how successful the team is. High priced players dont always equal high talent. In spite of the fact that teams with high salaries dont always win, it has been calculated that unless your payroll is at a certain level you are out of the race before it even starts. Baseball has the highest salaries out of all the sports. With the average salary at about 1,000,000 its hard to think of any player as poor. And the salaries are growing very rapidly.

In 181 the average income was $185,000. Compared to the real world baseball players are totally in a league of their own. In 176 the average ball player earned eight times the US average income. In 11 the average ballplayer earned forty-seven times the average US income (Sports Illustrated Website).

Salaries really have lost every sense of reason. On the field money is just a fraction of what some players get. In 16 Michael Jordan made 1.6 million dollars. But since image is everything he made $40 million just in endorsements in one year! All because some companies believe his face will help them sell their product. Sports athletes are hot commodities. Everywhere you look there is a sports related endorsement. Some companies rely solely on sports figures to advertise even if their product has nothing to do with sports (Food and Car Industries).

Here is an example of a Professional Athletes Salary. Kevin Garnett is a 1 year old Basketball player who had taken the A.C.T test three times in High School, failing all three times and had also taken the S.A.T Test once and failed. Kevin decided that he would not go to a collage even though he was the highly recruited #1 basketball player in the nation, and could have had a scholarship to any collage he wanted. So his decision took him to the NBA draft, where he was selected in the first round to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves signed him to a 6 year $15 Million dollar contract to play for them. Every year we hear of some new name, some new player in the sports news getting a new record contract which sets a much higher mark and blows away the high from the year before. The average professional athlete makes $1,000,000 a year. The President of the United States of America only makes $50 - $400 Thousand dollars a year, whats does this tell you about athlete salaries, a person that play's a game for a living should be making more than the person that makes some major decisions concerning a country? When players get paid this much it puts more pressure on them to perform. When players are not making so much, they are actually working for money.

A big payday is a good thing for the person and his family, but might not always be good for the locker room and the Organization writing the checks. "Professional Athletes are making too much money in a society that's salaries and wages are traditionally based on the values of ones work". Professional Athletes are constantly getting in trouble with the law. The players have all this money they are going to go out and spend it and have fun with it. You can turn to the Sports page and read about Rae Carrot a Wide Receiver for the Carolina Panthers in the NFL going to court for murdering his wife, Michael Irvin or Darryl Strawberry once again getting busted for possession of Cocaine and Marijuana or the crazed out lunatic Dennis Rodman kicking a cameraman in the groin. Whether it's Drug violation or Sexual Assault, it seems that the money is making these players behave badly. If we pay these players millions of dollars to entertain us, then it would be great if they could stay out of jail long enough so that the fans can see them play, but most of them end up getting out of prison and found not guilty of the crime because of who they are how much they are worth and how powerful they are.

Professional Sports Due to the greediness of sports figures, professional athletes are not punished in the same manner as other professionals are. It is like they are in a completely different group that uses an entirely different set of morals. Team owners care more about making their money than they do about setting a good example for young kids and making pro sports fun again rather than a business. Three good examples of this greediness are Roberto Alomar and Dennis Rodman. Team owners and their respective leagues need to do something to turn this situation around before they have murderers and rapists playing sports for millions of dollars a year. Roberto Alomar makes 5.5 million dollars a year due to his stellar defense and five Gold Gloves. He is one of majors' best all-around players and destined for the Hall of Fame, but he has performed one of the most unthinkable acts in all of sports. In a 16 playoff game, Alomar was up to bat and then Umpire (John Hirschbeck) called Alomar out on strikes. Alomar went back to the dugout where he started to argue the call with Hirschbeck who finally tossed Alomar. Oriole's manager (Davey Johnson) along with Alomar went racing to home plate to argue the ejection. As Alomar was being pushed away by Johnson, he spat at Hirschbeck. Alomar was suspended for five games, which was to be served at the beginning of the 17 season, so he could continue to play in the playoffs. In my opinion, this act was indefensible and warranted a stiffer penalty than a five-game suspension. Major league umpires threatened to strike during the playoffs due to Alomar's behavior and inadequate punishment. I believe that the league did not suspend Alomar during the playoffs because he is such a high profile player that he brings in enough money for the league that officials felt they could justify their actions. Dennis Rodman, the National Basketball Association's bad boy, is notorious for getting in trouble. In a January 15, 17, game, Rodman lost his balance after going for a rebound. He fell into a row of photographers where he kicked one of the photographers in the groin. The photographer, who doubled over in pain, was removed on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital. Rodman only received an eleven-game suspension, was fined $5,000 by the league, and ordered to get counseling. Compared with millions of dollars in salary he is paid a year for playing basketball that fine is just a slap on the wrist. That fine is less than one percent of his annual salary. Someone who makes $0,000 a year would be fined more for littering. This is not the way reasonable people should conduct themselves. All of the situations mentioned prove one point. Professional sports are corrupt and need to have a serious facelift when it comes to punishment. If something is not done soon, professional athletics will crumble due to lack of support and former team owners will have to turn to illegal activities like some of their players to make money.

Destroying A Life

Everyone can witness a miracle at least once in his or her life. It is a miracle which a man and woman can create. Unfortunately, many decide on a drastic choice to kill someone they should bring into the world. Abortion is a decision made constantly among pregnant adults and teens. Pre-marital sex leading to pregnancy, couples that don't want the baby, irresponsible people, are only a few reasons why abortions are so popular. Who should be punished? Should it be the parents or the baby?

What many women don't know is that abortion has many risks. Women in their first pregnancy who decide to have an abortion have a high risk of getting breast cancer. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is life threatening. PID can lead to an increase of reduced fertility. Studies have shown twenty percent to twenty-seven percent seeking abortion have a chlamydia infection. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that is a vaginal discharge that irritates and burns when urinating. At the time of an abortion a girl can get an infection, have excessive bleeding, ripping of the uterus and a cervical injury. Many of these complications are considered life threatening. Not only can a woman abort and kill the baby, but they can have a chance of facing death as well. Abortion is reported as the fifth leading cause of maternal death in the United States.

An abortion can impact a life forever. It can impact the mother's life or the baby's. A fetus is considered to be human. Shortly after conception, the DNA is already forming a unique human almost immediately. At eight weeks into the pregnancy, the baby's heart is beating steadily and every organ is present. At eight and a half weeks, visibilities of the baby's fingerprints are being imprinted. An unborn child is considered to be alive because it's living inside of someone else. Having a child requires more maturity than it does to have an abortion. The unborn baby has a right to a mother instead of being killed before witnessing the world.

Help with essay on abortion

It shocks me that older and mature women have abortions, it surprises me even more that teenagers have abortion. Teenage abortion is allowed in over twenty states without the permission of their legal guardian. Teenagers will start to take sex lightly knowing that abortion is always a choice if the girl gets pregnant. Because of their irresponsibility's, they're making another life inside their very own body pay for their mistakes. Abortion will be taken advantage of and can be addicting. Teenagers will continuously remind themselves if ever they get an unexpected pregnancy, they can always consider having an abortion. If teenagers, as well as older women, have abortions, it will destroy the way your body functions. When women decide to have and keep a baby after an abortion, a handicap newborn with complications may be born because of your previous choices.

A way to stop abortion is holding off sex. Taking away something as precious as a baby is taking away the respect you had from yourself and the respect from others. Abortion will cause a woman to have infections, diseases, and complications when they want to have a baby. Don't abort a human being. Instead, have the baby and learn from your mistakes and take care of it. Or, put the baby up for adoption and allow another family to hold a miracle. Abortion kills an innocent life and cannot be undone. To not look at complex implications beyond the womb is truly irresponsible and absurd. Do not make abortion one of your choices if you are pregnant. Take it as a responsibility and a blessing. Think before having an abortion. It will save you the guilt and pain later on in life.

Edmund Burke and Joseph De Maistre were, indeed, both conservatives. The conservatives were the reactionaries of the Age of Reaction. Where they reflective of the Age of Reaction? I would say, yes, they were!

The reactionaries believed in a traditional rule. They wanted kings, an aristocracy, and a clergy. A matter of fact, most of these reactionaries were one of the three! They believed that due to the French Revolution tradition was ruined in Europe due to the rise of Napoleon, who got rid of kings, aristocrats, and the clergy. Also the Revolution brought on violence, terror and war. Something, in their mind, that would have never happened with a traditional government in power. They also believed that the Jacobins ("liberals") were assassins because of the Terror.

Burke, who was an Anglo-Irishman, wrote in Reflections on the Revolution in France that liberty and social order are maintained by the traditional rights and duties embedded in custom and law. And when these traditions are overthrown in revolutions, society is threatened with chaos, bloodshed and despotism. Is this reflective to the Age of Reaction? Absolutely, it is!

De Maistre was a man that fled is own country after the invasion of the French army invaded it. So he was not happy with the French already! He wrote the Essay on the Generative Principle of Political Constitutions. He, again, wrote about how he disagreed with the "liberals" feelings on belief and authority. Basically he said that human beings can not create a civilization themselves. We need religion and we need authority! He also mentions that without Christianity we will see anarchy!

Buy custom Edmund Burke and Joseph DeMaistre-Age of Reaction term paper

These two men are indeed a reflection of the Age of Reaction! These people wanted things to be like they were before the war. You could say that this began with the Congress of Vienna which established the borders of the European states the way they were before the Revolution!

I'm sure that conservatives would believe in the things that both these men mentioned in there essays to an extent! As we have talked about in class, the liberals of this time were equivalent to the conservatives today. So obviously they would not agree with everything. I do know that most conservatives today want to have a powerful authority in charge and strongly believe in religion. Therefore, instead of the "status quo" theory that most conservatives believe in now, I'm sure most would want to revert back to they way things were in Europe.

I do feel that conservatism is a philosophy of its own and is not just an opposition to liberalism! I feel that even throughout history, we have always seen both sides. Sometimes the liberals are right, other times the conservatives are right. I feel there are times when it is good to stay "status quo." Sometimes in a world of disarray it is good to have organization and structure. I feel that both parties balance each other out and not one nor the other is more powerful than the other. If anything, I would say that liberals are more an opponent to conservatives! Most people today do not like change. Again, they want to keep things "status quo," however, the liberalists make the conservatives settle for change! Even if it is just a little. If we did not have change we could never have better technology and better medicines to keep us living longer!

Writing is Art

Our African American history has been shaped my many factors. We've been through trials and tribulations, slavery and lynching, and restriction from reading and writing. Through the times, many African Americans have excelled in all areas of society, literature in particular. James Baldwin and Octavia Butler are legends, but are still taught in the classroom today, Kevin Powell and Joan Morgan are relatively new to the scene, but good work is expected from them both.

James Baldwin

(14-187)

Help with essay on Writing is Art

James Baldwin was born August , 14 in Harlem, New York and was the oldest of nine children. His father was a preacher and Baldwin was ordained a preacher at the age of 14. At 18, he graduated from Dewitt Clinton High School. In 144 he met Richard Wright who helped him to get a fellowship that allowed him, through financial freedom, to devote himself to literature. In 148, Baldwin left the US for Europe where he completed his first novels Go Tell It on the Mountain in 15, Notes of a Native Son in 155, and Giovanni's Room in 156. After nine years he returned to the states and became known as a spokesperson for the civil rights of African Americans. His outrage for the conditions of African Americans led him to write such novels as Nobody Knows My Name in 161 and The Fire Next Time in 16. He remained abroad for the majority of his last fifteen years. Although he never gave up his American citizenship he was embraced by the French and in 168 they named him the Commander of the Legion of Honor. On November 0, 187 of stomach cancer in Saint-Paul-de-Vance, France, and was buried in Harlem. His last work to be published was an anthology of essays The Price of the Ticket Collected Nonfiction 148-185.

Octavia Butler

(147-

Octavia Butler was born in Pasadena, California, on June , 147. She was the only child of a maid and a shoeshine man. She became interested in science fiction after being turned off by the standard reading of elementary schools. At the age of 1, she was producing stories that she later said had been heavily influenced by the white-male-oriented science fiction stories she had read. She graduated from Pasadena City College and attended California State University in Los Angeles. In 171 as a result of her participation in the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop, one of her short stories, "Crossover", appeared in the Clarion anthology. Five years later Doubleday published her first novel. She is one of the first African American women to gain popularity as a major science fiction writer. She is the author of nine novels and many short stories. She has won two of science fiction's most prestigious awards, the Nebula and the Hugo. Her novels include Patternmaster (176), Survivor (178), Mind of My Mind (177), Kindred (17), Wild Seed (180), Clay's Ark (184), Dawn (187), Adulthood Rites (188), and Imago (18).

Joan Morgan-Murray

(165-

Joan Morgan was born in 165 and grew up in the South Bronx. After graduating from Wesleyan in 187, she had plans of attending Law school. When that fell through, she pursued an acting career while teaching English, but for her acting seemed powerless. She was consumed by writing after this point. She released her first book in May of 1, the same year she gave birth to her son Sul. Her groundbreaking book When Chickenhead Come Home to Roost My life as a hip-hop feminist, is a cummulation of five or six years of articles. Critics and readers agree, though the content is certainly pertinent and timely, it's "Joan's voice and delivery, tight like a battle-tested MC, that put the bling bling in Chickenhead's shiny star. Morgan describes her writing like this, "I've read a lot about it…part academic, part hip hop, part bell hooks, part Terry McMillan. I write the way I speak. I come from different places. I did the prep school thing, but I grew up in the streets. That's where I really come from and I put that in what I do. I write in the most conversational way possible. When people read it, they feel like they know me." Aside from her novel, Morgan is currently working as executive editor for Essence magazine, where she has conducted interviews with various entertainers such as Vanessa Williams in 000. In the works for her next project is a collection once again dealing with her own experiences, being a married, a mother and looking for babysitters.

Kevin Powell

Kevin Powell was raised in Jersey City, New Jersey. He is a former senior writer/editor for Vibe magazine and an original cast member of MTVs The Real World. He is also known as a cultural critic. AMERICAN GROWTH

America began a growing period after the Civil War that stretched from the east coast to the west coast and from our Canadian boarder country to the boundaries of Texas and Mexico.

Order custom research paper on American Growth

Within the outline of this country we began to notice a movement of grand economic proportions. Citizens of this country, rich and poor, put their ideas and money into inventions that forever changed what is known now as an industrial empire.

Among the changes that occurred first was the loyalty oath that newly regained citizens had to take. This annunciated the laws that were written to protect them and gave respect back to the nation that the south had strayed away from. Now that all was forgiven, white southern men were given their right to vote back. Also, with the fifteenth amendment blacks were given freedom and political rights. However, with stern qualifications and poll taxes most black men were unable to meet requirements that allowed them vote. Inevitably, reconstruction steadily began to emerge and many of the former slaves had much influence over political matters.

Reconstruction was underway and freedoms were due, now people were ready to move on and prosperously grow once again. First and foremost, the need for money was beginning to place an high importance to the men and families that live in this country so ideas were put into action. Many people were skeptical yet also amazed when the idea of an railroad was set into motion. This would not only give jobs and a few years of security to some families but also give our country the economical boast that it needed. With the rail road not only would travel from west to east become easier but also give the farmers and other business a way to transport their products to other areas around the country. You see jealousy being used as a catalyst to cause relationship problems when the trusted Iago rots Othello's mind by telling him that he is being deceived by Desdemona and Cassio. Iago plant's lies in Othello's thoughts to create a whirlpool of jealous emotions in his head. He tells Othello made-up stories of a romantic situation between Desdemona and Cassio, "In sleep I heard him (Cassio) say, 'Sweet Desdemona, Let us be wary, let us hide our loves'." (..475-476). In telling him these lies, Othello grows more and more hostile in his relationship with Desdemona, "Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul. But I do love thee! And when I love thee not, Chaos is come again." (..100-10). Othello's jealousy is the catalyst for the inevitable end he sees for his relationship with Desdemona.

Iago's motivation for acting in such an evil manner is jealousy. His judgment is tainted by the jealousy he feels when he feels he has been overlooked, "I know my price, I am worth no worse a place. But he, as loving his own pride and purposes…Nonsuits my meditators." (1.1.1-1, 17). On impulse Iago's brain is quick to devise a plan driven by his jealousy to hurt the person who has hurt him, Othello. After obtaining the role he wanted of officer, he is no longer in control of the situation he has created jealousy has infested the mind of Othello and it knows no boundaries.

Jealousy is Othello's motivation in murdering Desdemona. It has taken control of Othello's brain as Iago knew it would, "It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock. The meat it feeds on…Who dotes, yet doubts; suspects, yet (strongly) loves" (..15-00). Iago knows that jealousy has the ability to cripple ones rational and judgments. Theoretically, knowing this he can successfully ruin Othello's relationship with Desdemona and walk away without blame (if no one was to know of his plan), but his plan is exposed. Emilia (Iago's wife) is the first person besides Desdemona herself to speak of the purity in Desdemona's heart, "Thou dost belie her, and thou art a devil...She was as false as water…Thou are rash as fire to say. That she was false. O, she was heavenly true!" (5..16-166). In a jealous rage Othello has murdered Desdemona, and he is shown the error of his ways by Emilia, "This deed of thine is no more worthy heaven than thou wast worthy her…As ignorant as dirt! Thou hast done a deed." (5..15-16, 00). Iago's scheme is exposed and he murders Emilia in an angry joust, knowing he has ruined the life of another and been caught doing so. After these events occur Othello realizes the finality of the jealous act he has committed, "I kissed thee ere I killed thee. No way but this, killing myself, to die upon a kiss" (5..40-41).

Jealousy is the scapegoat for the actions of the characters in this play. Iago chooses not to speak in behalf of himself averting his thoughts from the chaos he has caused through his jealous actions, "Demand me nothing. What you know, you know. From this time forth, I will never speak word." (5..55-56). It is jealousy that caused Othello to turn on his wife, who he loved dearly and it is used as a scapegoat for his actions.

Jealousy is far more powerful than one can know; it pulls its victim by the reigns and cannot be stopped until the victim can realize its true power. Othello uses jealousy in stages to show its true power and it portrays a realistic outcome when one lets jealousy rule their life.
