ABORTION DEBATE ESSAY

Mr. Chairman, Honorable Judges, Worthy Opponents, and Fellow Students,

This afternoon we, the affirmative team, are going to convince you that abortion should be pro-choice. Before I present my arguments I want to define the topic, which we are debating today. Abortion is categorized as murder, when in fact it scientifically is not. There is not one religion in the world that specifically defines abortion as wrong. Abortion should be legalized because of rape victims and their unwanted baby. Also, because of overpopulation, unnecessary births, much less unwanted, should not take place.

Order custom research paper on Abortion debate

The act of Abortion is often labeled as murder, when it is truthfully not. The term "murder" is far away from the meaning of the essential process of abortion. The definition of murder is the unlawful killing of one human by another human. The definition of a human is a distinct entity living independently as a whole. A baby is dependant on the mother while in the womb, so it is not a human, declaring this course of action is not murder.

Abortion should be legalized for rape victims and their unwanted babies. A victim of rape should not have to go through the pain and suffering of having a baby that they did not choose to have. If abortion were authorized then these victims would have a choice, rather then having to bear with an unasked for child. These women would be able to go on with their lives with the knowing that they do not have to support a baby.

To conclude my debate, when the word abortion comes to mind, a person should not think of bad or evil. A person should think of Choice and Diversity, because Abortion is not murder, against religion, and it should be Pro-choice. My colleagues and I have shown you that Abortion is first not murder, second not a sin, and last it should be an alternative. We ask you to consider the arguments carefully and we are sure that you will agree with us, that Abortion should be Pro-Choice.

When reading Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince, one can't help but grasp Machiavelli's argument that morality and politics can not exist in the same forum. However, when examining Machiavelli's various concepts in depth, one can conclude that perhaps his suggested violence and evil is fueled by a moral end of sorts. First and foremost, one must have the understanding that this book is aimed solely at the Prince or Emperor with the express purpose of aiding him in maintaining power. Therefore, it is essential to grasp his concepts of fortune and virtue. These two contrary concepts reflect the manner in which a Prince should govern while minimizing all chance and uncertainty. This kind of governing demands violence to be taken, however this is only done for the strict purpose of maintaining his throne, and generating both fear and admiration from his people. In all cases of violence, Machiavelli limits the amount of violence that needs to be taken down to the minimum, and most cases the victims of these acts are enemies of the people. Behind the violence, the prince is essentially taking the role of the villain and assuming all "bad" acts so that his people do not have to commit the acts themselves. In addition, all the Prince asks for is to not threaten his power and to respect it. In the 16th Century, this request is feeble compared to those of other hierarchical Monarchies. In the end, Machiavelli's Prince assumes all the burden of violence so his people may not worry of their lively hood. This is Machiavelli's ultimate stroke of morality.

In essence, Machiavelli's ideal principality sustains a genuine sense of morality behind the violence that "must be subjected in order to maintain stability." Looking at his plans subjectively, Machiavelli could very easily have broken down the subjects in a hierarchical fashion or forced upon them large sum taxes and duties. He does not do this, instead opting simply for the respect of the people and the lack of treachery in affairs regarding his power. The people in his kingdom can live with tranquility, and pursue whatever they so desire. This freedom of the people and ability to act as they feel is more than a simple convenience. Personal pursuit of happiness of all is given by the Prince but at his expense. All that the people must do is respect and not threaten the Prince's power. On the contrary, the Prince sacrifices his own motives, morals, and personal happiness so that his subjects may have them. Essentially, Machiavelli paints the Prince as a Christ figure. It is the Prince who takes away the sins of the world, so to speak. He gives up his morals so that other may keep and cherish theirs. Machiavelli firmly insists that politics and morality can not co-exist. The main reason is that moral behavior is consistent and can be predictable. Consistency and predictability are significantly weak components of a ruler, and could be exploited by his enemies. When a pattern of action is established, conspirators can conspire and plan an overthrow. These conspirators would then plunder and pillage as they came to power; therefore worsening the situation in the kingdom. The people then would become the victims, and anarchy would soon break out creating all kinds of disorder. So, although the intentions of moral political actions are good, in the end they will lead to immoral acts. The actions he takes are not just violent tyrannical activities rather they are sacrifices. He is the one who must live with the guilt of sin, not his constitutes. In terms of morality, the Prince does not demand any unmoral action from his subjects. He shoulders it all. It is also the Prince who, although it is also for his personal safety, eliminates the tyrants that not only threaten his throne but also his people. Along the same lines as halting anarchy or riots, the elimination of other power hungry individuals evaporates the threat of oppression on the people from another exterior source. One thing that remains consistent in his principality is that people maintain their honor and esteem, and this unselfish sacrifice is what makes the Prince's actions in actuality quite moral.

Another aspect that one can not help but ignore is that fact the Prince assumes the position of ruler at the costs and expectations. For being a Prince, he must at times be prudent and aware of his position with the people. Machiavelli writes "the Prince must be seen as moral by the people." The fact underlies the importance of morality for Machiavelli. Without morality and without the notion of morality in a Prince, civil disorder will occur. Morality, with its uncertainties, provides at the very least a common non-violent base in which subjects have a set of rules could live by. What makes morality important to the Prince is that it also allows him a statute of sorts. For example, if people operate by their morals than the Prince has not to worry such problems as stealing, killing and other immoral actions. Therefore, just by appearing to be moral, morality can be used as a tool to control and harness the people below him.

Machiavelli's Prince is a book in which Machiavelli outlines the actions a Prince must take to hold and maintain power in a principality. Within the context of the book, Machiavelli brings forth the notion that prudent violence must be done in order to maintain the throne. In addition, he strongly expresses the ideology that a Prince can not be both moral and political. However, behind this argument lays the foundation of morality. The Prince's evil actions although not moral seem to sustain morality for the subjects within his principality. The Prince assumes all immoral behaviors and thus, sacrifices himself for the people, is moral in the end.

What is the animal's habitat like?

The American alligator lives in fresh water and is common in swamps, rivers, bayous and marshes. Its habitat is around water and land in the U.S.A. They stretch out in the sun early in the day, soaking up the suns heat to enable them to carry out all their daily activities such as hunting, defending territories, etc. The winter months are spent dormant, often buried in the mud at the bottom of ponds and swamps in holes

Why is the animal endangered?

The alligator was slain for it's skin to be made into purses, wallets etc. Over 10,000 alligators were killed in a short time and there numbers fell quickly as this was still going on. They were on the edge of extinction until people took action

What action, if any is being taken to protect this animal?

It went as an endangered animal because people wanted there skin so people took action to stop this killing but to keep the skin as well. So they made alligator farms were they would specially raise this reptile and then kill it, to get the skin with out hurting the ones in the wild. Pouches stopped killing alligators because people were buying skin from the farms, that's why the farms had a great effect

What do you think the future holds for this animal?

The Alligator farms had a great effect as the numbers of the alligators in the wild grew again and are no longer in trouble but they still are protected so it wont happen again as these farms are going well. With that I think the alligators will live on for a very long time

The Vietnam War. Was it necessary? Some say yes, some say no. Was it worth costing millions of lives from countries across the earth? Many people in America were affected outside of the war as well as the soldiers in the war. Moms, dads, brothers sisters, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, grandparents, white, black, Asian, you name it, all were affected by the war fought thousands of miles away from home. From the soldiers in the war, to the people on the home-front, over to the Vietnamese themselves, it greatly affected individuals in society.

When we think of Vietnam, the first thought in my mind is about the soldiers and how they were affected. Sometimes I hear stories of veterans to the war who have gone crazy and had terrible flashbacks. What could be so terrible to affect these people in a stable society that we have today. Would they ever be the same? "… I can tell you truthfully, I doubt if I'll come out of this war alive. In my original squad, I'm the only one left unharmed. In my platoon there is only 1 of us. It seems everyday another guy 18 and 1 years old like myself is killed in action…. All of us are scared cause we know a lot of us wont make it." (Griffith, 77, 0). Just like 58,000 other soldiers, Private Raymond Griffith, who wrote this letter was killed on July 4th, 166. This was his last letter home. (Edelmen, 77, 0). The thought of never knowing when you are going to die would haunt anyone. From Private Griffith's letter you can accentuate what his thoughts were and how his family felt when reading this letter.

"The Vietnamese don't want us here. All they want is our money. Many of us who see these things can't do anything about it because those higher up are to intent on hauling in money that they could a mass anywhere else in the world for doing as little as they do. After a while all I see catches up with me and I begin to realize the futility of it all. I really don't want any part of it, so I participate as little as possible in all things Army. I just try to enjoy living with the GI's I'm here with and learn what I can from them. Eventually my tour here will be over, and I'll be able to come back to the U.S." (Kalwes, 1, 0). Private Kalwes was sent to a military hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Two months later on his first medical leave, Kalwes committed suicide. (Edelmen, 1, 0). Know one probably knows what exactly lead to Private Kalwes's suicide but an indefinite answer of the shock of war is probably the .% leading cause to his suicide. The American soldiers that were in Vietnam brought back agonizing pain that would stay with them for the rest of there lives. Some knew they would not make it back and sent letters home which still has impacts on families of today. A letter by Helen Highwater expresses her feelings she has for her son still decades later, "… I still grieve for my son as I'm sure all mothers do. It's so good to hear his buddies tell me about him. He was years old when he lost his life. He was years old when he died. He would have been 4 in just one more month… My nightmares never seem to go away." Helen Highwater wrote this in 1 almost 0 years after her son died in 166. From her letter you can see how parents feel about there sons going to war and how it affects her life still, many years later.

During the war in Vietnam there were still the people at home. Many opposed the war and this lead to the largest anti-war movement in the U.S history. During the early years of the 160's few people were against the war. The first real change is when President Johnson sent in troops in 165; The president had been campaigning as a "peace candidate"(Schomp, , 0), telling the people that he would send troops thousands of miles away to do the work of others. As the troops kept on getting sent in and American casualties got higher the people started to ask questions. Broadcasts and images of the war were played in homes on the television. These broadcasts and images showed the true brutality of the war. In April of 165, an antiwar rally was held in Washington, D.C., drawing nearly 15,000 people to the event. Two years later more than 00,000 protestors marched in New York City and San Francisco. Marches and rallies were just a few forms of antiwar protests that occurred. There were also picket lines, petitions, and newspaper adds teach-ins, sit-ins, and "die-ins" where people laid oddly across the streets like Vietnamese villagers killed by bombs. (Schomp, 5, 0).

As antiwar movements grew in size it also brought in people together in all forms of life. Black and white united in a time of turmoil during the civil rights.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was the leader of the civil rights movement, spoke at a demonstration saying, "The promises of the "Great Society", have been shot down on the battlefield of Vietnam". Thousands of blacks believed in Dr. Kings criticism and joined in with there voices against the war.

As there were protestors against the war there were those that were angered by the peace movements. Veterans of older wars had thought of this peace protestors as unpatriotic and "un-American". The people that were for the war were known as the "hawks" and the people against the war were known as "doves". The hawks blamed the doves for giving encouragement to the enemy and prolonging the enemy. The hawks were exceptionally disgusted with the protesting college students because they were wasting all the opportunity that was right in front of them. One WWII Veteran says "…Obviously there goal is to destroy the United States of America. This is why patriotic Americans have got to act now to put a stop to all this trouble. You see, we are not only fighting the Communists in Vietnam. We are fighting them within the United states itself." Fights and brawls sometimes started between the groups. When antiwar protestors marched they were sometimes met with rotten fruits and eggs. (Shomp, , 0)

The United States was on the road of self destruction it seemed. People that were once assured of the American government were now wondering how many more lives the war would claim. After years of protest with no results, the antiwar forces were getting upset. Increasingly, peace marches and rallies ended in illegal sit-ins, the storming of government buildings, and ugly confrontations between the hawks and doves, and also with police. A few protestors began calling for a revolution; the violent overthrow of the U.S. government, which they had come to see as too flawed to fix. These type of extremist were small in numbers, but their loud voices were heard which only encouraged students on campuses. In 168 nearly 500 universities were rocked with student strikes and protests; many universities were temporarily shutdown. A student takeover at Columbia University in New York City ended in violence and arrests. The leader of this protest said that the students and himself were out for "a revolution. Nothing else." (Shomp, 7, 0) Also in 168 Martin Luther King was assassinated and a few months later so was presidential candidate Robert Kennedy. Kennedy's death lead to a different Democratic candidate. Hubert Humphrey. Humphrey supported President Johnson's policy on the Vietnam War. During the Democratic Convention, 5,000 demonstrators showed up outside the convention hall in Chicago, only to find themselves confronted by 1,000 policemen. Violent actions were shared between the groups and with innocent by standards. The demonstration lead the people of the U.S. toward the Republican nominee, Richard Nixon. Nixon won the presidential election and campaigned to have a speedy end to the war in Vietnam, but the years went on. Divisions in America only worsened, and made the issues deepen. (Schomp, , 0)

Black soldiers in the Vietnam War were also fighting two wars. The Vietnam War and also the war for equal rights. When the Vietnam War began, black American's answered the call to serve as they had through out history to prove themselves, and to earn respect back home. Newly won rights and complete integration of the military seemed to promise a better life in America. African Americans would distinguish themselves in the war and pay a heavy price.

By end of 165, 1,51 African Americans were troops in Vietnam. Despite having more and better weapons than the communists, U.S. ground troops found the war aggravating. The U.S. commander in Vietnam, General William C. Westmoreland, had devised a "search and destroy" strategy to kill as many enemy soldiers as possible. (Super, , 0.) African Americans found themselves in the thick of the ground war in Vietnam. They served in all aspects of the ground campaign. David Tuck, from Cleveland, was a radio operator in the central highlands. Dwight Johnson, a former altar boy and scout from Detroit's worst ghetto was a tank driver. Harold Bryant, nicknamed "light bulb", as he grew up because he was always full of ideas, was a combat engineer who specializes in disarming mines and booby traps. (Super, , 0) The chance to prove themselves, as well as the promise of higher pay led African Americans like Milton Olive to join elite combat units like the "Sky Soldiers" who were thought to be the best American unit in Vietnam. Olive was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for laying on grenade and taking the full blow to himself to save four of his comrades.

By the end of 167 there were near 00,000 African American in the U.S. armed forces. A large number, about 60,000, were in or near South Vietnam, performing admirably in a wide variety of duties

From the most decorated war hero to the lowliest foot soldier, African Americans were making the most of the opportunity to serve and compete on an equal basis with whites. Like the society they had left behind, however, Vietnam was a place where respect couldn't always be earned on the basis of how well you do your job. Racism followed African Americans to Southeast Asia.

The Vietnam War changed America forever. The war united people together and also split them apart. The soldiers in Vietnam showed great courage to fight a war where no one wanted them to be, and to do it with honor. For the anti-war protestors who demonstrated peace, to keep Americans home, where they were safe, and kept people from being forced to go to war. For the African Americans, when life was hard to be black, and everything earned was worth fighting for.

REALISM

Definition

The term realism has many varying meanings. A central idea is the view that the author should represent things, actions, events and humans as they are. In 1th century drama, it refers to a less extreme form of naturalism. They used method acting which is a style of acting in which the actor immerses himself into the characters personality, even outside rehearsal times, in order to feel his way into the character, thereby approaching the action from the feeling life of the character, rather than from the objective study of the actor. Realism is also a literary technique practiced by many schools of writing.

"Realism is nothing more and nothing less than the truthful treatment of material." --William Dean Howells

How, where and when Realism began

Realism came about partly as a response to these new social , artistic conditions. The movement began in France and by 1860 had some general rules. These were

· Truth resides in material objects and we perceive to all five senses;

· Truth is verified through science

· The scientific methodobservationwould solve everything

· Human problems were the highest form of science

· Artaccording to the realist viewhad as its purpose, to better mankind.

Realists centred their attention to a remarkable degree on the immediate, the here and now, the specific action, and the verifiable consequence (A Handbook to Literature 48).

Major influences of Realism

In American literature, the term realism encompasses the period of time from the Civil War to the turn of the century during which William Dean Howells, Rebecca Harding Davis, Henry James, Mark Twain, and others wrote fiction devoted to accurate representation and an exploration of American lives in various contexts. Realism however was used differently in European contexts than in American literature.

Realism drama was an important form of Naturalism, which refers to various kinds of 1th and 0th century literature, which attempted to reflect the reality of social life.

For example, in the 1th century, the writer Charles Dickens exposed the awful conditions of working class life in Victorian England, while in 0th century; William Burroughs depicts the offensive haze of drug addiction in his 'Junkie realism.'

Major characteristics and effects of Realism

It was hard to get realism accepted widely

q Realism first showed itself in staging and costuming. Three-dimensional details in these areas had been added by 1800. By 1850, theatre productions had historically accurate settings and constant details, partly as a result of romantic ideals. In Wagner's operas the auditorium was darkened, the stage was framed with a double arch, there were no side boxes and no centre aisle, and all seats were equally good. Further, he did not allow musicians to tune in the orchestra pit, allowed no applause or curtain calls, and strove for historical accuracy in scenery and costumes. Even though Wagner's operas are mythical, his attempts at illusionism helped gain public acceptance for realism.

q In realism, character is more important than action and plot; and complex moral choices are often the subject. Characters appear in their real temperament and motive; they are in an understandable relation to nature, to each other, to their social class, and to their own past.

q Class is important. Events were usually believable.

q Realistic novels avoid the sensational, dramatic elements of naturalistic novels and romances.

q Diction is natural, not heightened or poetic; the tone may be comic, satiric, or matter-of-fact.

q Objectivity in presentation becomes increasingly important, obvious author comments or other intrusions lessen as the century progresses.

Major playwrights of Realism

Ibsens Plays

· Ghosts1881dealt with the concept of the sins of the father transferring to the son, resulting in syphilis.

· Pillars of Society 1877 dealt with war and business.

· Hedda Gabbler 180 a powerful woman takes her life at the end of the play to get away from her boredom with society.

· A Doll's House 187 Nora leaves her husband Torvald and her children at the end of the play; often considered the slam heard around the world, Nora's action must have been very shocking to the Victorian audience.

Later, Ibsen turned to more symbolic and abstract dramas; but his realism affected others, and helped lead to realistic theatre, which has become, despite variations and rejections against it, the predominant form of theatre even today.

George Bernard Shaw (1856-150) in England

Uncommon for his witty humor

Made fun of societies notion using for the purpose of educating and changing. His plays tended to show the accepted attitude, then demolished that attitude while showing his own solutions.

· Arms and the Man (184) about love and war and honor.

· Mrs. Warren's Profession prostitution.

· Major Barbara (105) a munitions manufacturer gives more to the world (jobs, etc.) while the Salvation Army only prolongs of the status quo.

· Pygmalion (11) shows the transforming of a flower girl into a society woman, and exposes the phoniness of society. The musical My Fair Lady was based on this play.

Anton Chekhov (1860-104) in Russia

Chekhov is known more for poetic expiration and symbolism, compelling psychological reality, people trapped in social situations, hope in hopeless situations. He claimed that he wrote comedies; others think they are sad and tragic. Characters in Chekhov's plays seem to have a fate that is a direct result of what they are. His plays have an illusion of no plot. His realism has affected other Playwrights, as did his symbolic meanings in the texts of his plays and in the titles of his plays.

· The Seagull (188).

· Three Sisters (100) we did the show here last year; about three sisters who want to move to Moscow but never do.

· The Cherry Orchard (10)

Summary

Over the last two decades, many individuals were compelled to stay employed with one company for the rest of their working years. Starting in an entry level position and working upward was a common practice in the 0th century However, the workforce has changed in the new millennium with many people breaking the ties of tradition and changing employers to be more marketable in a highly competitive job market. Individuals who have displayed an eagerness to gain more working knowledge and experience with different companies have proven to be a better choice. This changed the hiring practice of new prospects over employees with limited skills capabilities and talent.

Paraphrase

Dr. Carolyn Carlson stated, "For most of the 0th century, it was common for an individual to work for only one company during an entire career" (The Changing Workplace, (Workplace Monthly 00), p.4). The belief was that if an individual worked hard and maintained company standards they secured a lifetime position up to retirement. Carlson also noted, "It was not uncommon for people to start work with a company in the mailroom or as a courier at the age of 15, or even younger, and to retire at age 65 with 50 years or more of service" (The Changing Workplace, p.4). Climbing the ladder of success was a learned tendency in the past. However, in the 1st century many individuals have changed jobs in search of career advancement with marketable skills gained from different employers. This new and exciting trend will make the job seeker much more valuable than an individual with a limited skills background. A new standard such as this formed a pool of individuals with unique capabilities that prospective employers were looking for to gain an advantage over their competitors. This new way of thinking will help improve a company's management team, which will lead to better employee development. Having the right blend of employees a company could secure its financial stability in the marketplace.

Roman Polanski had very few stage directions to work from to create Act 1 Scene i. The only stage directions Polanski had to work from were- 'A desolate place,' 'Thunder and lightening' and 'Enter three witches.'

Polanski interprets Shakespeare's stage directions for Ii that the action should take place in 'a desolate place' as a beach at dawn in the winter. This encapsulates the theme of unnatural events because the idea of a beach in winter is strange. In addition to this the time of day, dawn, enables Polanski to use an opening shot of a blood-red sky at sunrise. The red clearly symbolises evil, hate, danger and violence. It serves as a warning for the events in the rest of the play. At the end of the scene Polanski makes clever use of the tide being out and the fog. It looks like the witches are hovering. Polanski has interpreted the line 'hover through the fog and filthy air' literally.

Polanski's presentation of the witches tries to avoid the modern stereotype of a witch. There are no pointy hats, black cloaks or broomsticks in sight! The witches are dressed in ragged, outlandish clothes which suggest that they are outcasts of society. Each witch is dressed differently to help the audience distinguish between the witches. All three of the witches have an impediment. One of the witches has deformed eyes, one has no teeth and one cannot speak at all. This enhances the idea of the witches being strange.

The action at the beginning of the scene is very minimal with the first object that the audience see is a stick that one of the witches uses to help her walk. For the first few minutes of the scene no dialogue takes place. The witches are seen doing a 'spell' in the sand. This immediately gets the audiences attention and wondering what the witches are doing. When the first lines are delivered by one of the witches they speak in a mumbled way that is hard to understand, this is yet another way of showing how peculiar these witches are.

Sound and Music can be very effective when creating tension and atmosphere. Polanski uses several methods to create an eerie atmosphere. Firstly he uses silence which is disconcerting. It is completely the opposite of what the stage direction says. Secondly he uses the plaintive sound of a seagull. Finally the weird music of a piano is used.

In conclusion Polanski has given as natural and realistic portrayal of Act I Scene i as possible, cleverly avoiding the clich of the modern stereotype of witches. In my opinion Polanski has been successful in creating a dramatic opening
