Dressed to Kill

Dressed to Kill directed by Brian De Palma and Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock were similar films in that they are in the same genre of suspense thrillers. Though Psycho was made before Dressed to Kill, it set a precedent for suspense film. Using some of Hitchcocks impressive work as inspiration, De Palma recreated excellent cinematography and heart pounding suspense in Dressed to Kill.

Dressed to Kill used similar cinematography as Psycho in that it had a shower scene in the beginning with a high angle shot. The film used the same technique in the MET scene, as Hitchcock used in the car scene when Marion Crane was being followed during the car scene with the camera behind her. The women in the museum was sitting on a bench and she sees a man with dark hair and sunglasses. She decides to follow him and drops her silver glove, the camera follows her at eye level through the museum. Then he disappears and starts to follow her with the same following camera shot. The scene is very intense. De Palma also uses a high angle shot during the murder scene in the elevator, as Hitchcock did in the shower scene.

The films are also similar in that both killers were men with dark hair and dressed like women, in blonde wigs, except that in Psycho, the killer was schizophrenic and in Dress to Kill the killer was a transvestite. Both killers used a knife or a blade to kill their victims. Though the and scenarios were different in the films, similar techniques in cinematography were used in the scenes to create intense moods and suspense.

Brian De Palma's Dress to Kill was impressive, coming neck and neck with Psycho, by adapting Hitchcock's mastery of suspense with his own imagination of setting and scene creating a phenomenal film. After seeing Psycho, then Dress to kill, it was fascinating to see the same techniques used in there own creative way.

Every March during the earliest years after the founding of Macondo, a small, isolated village, gypsies arrive with marvelous new inventions magnets, telescopes, and magnifying glasses. The much-respected village founder, Jose Arcadia Buendia, seizes on these inventions as ways to make money and scientific progress. Over the pleadings of his level-headed wife, Ursula Iguaran, he throws himself into countless schemes and plots involving the new inventions. When he becomes friends with Melquiades, the gypsy leader, Jose Arcadia Buendia is inspired to dedicate himself to knowledge and scientific study. He flirts with alchemy and astronomy and becomes increasingly withdrawn from his family and community. His great discovery, that the world is round, causes the whole village to become concerned about his sanity.

Jose Arcadia Buendia was the founder of Macondo and remains its most important citizen‹he oversaw the villages creation and decided how life would be lived there. It was a dreamy, magical place where no one was over the age of thirty and no one died. Therefore Jose Arcadio Buendias obsession with progress affects the whole village. He decides that Macondo must establish contact with the outside world and leads an expedition to find a path to the sea. The men of the village chop through marshes and swamps and discover, among other things, a rusted fifteenth-century suit of armor and a ruined Spanish galleon. But they do not discover the sea, and Jose Arcadio Buendia leads them back home and announces that Macondo is surrounded by water on all sides. Then he decides to move the village to a less isolated place, but Ursula plants opposition among the women of the village and he is forced to abandon that plan.

So he takes an interest in his two sons Jose Arcadio, the eldest, who has his fathers strength but lacks imagination, and the mysterious Aureliano, whose adult name is Colonel Aureliano Buendia. Their father educates them and takes them to the gypsies fair in March, where the three of them see ice for the first time.

The second chapter opens by telling the story of Macondos founding. Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula were cousins in a prosperous village. When they got married, Ursula was fearful that their children would be horribly deformed, as the children of incestuous unions sometimes are. She was particularly afraid because her aunt, married to Jose Arcadio Buendias uncle, had given birth to a miserable son with a pigs tail. So she wore a chastity belt and refused to consummate her marriage while people in the village laughed at Jose Arcadio Buendia. One of these villagers, Prudencio Aguilar, insulted Jose Arcadio Buendia after losing a cock fight. Buendia challenged him to a duel and killed him. Then he went home and told Ursula to remove her chastity belt. After several happy months, Ursula began to see the ghost of Prudencio Aguilar, and soon it became clear that his ghost was haunting them. Overcome with guilt and determined to put Prudencios ghost to rest, Jose Arcadio Buendia decided to leave the village. A small band of hardy souls elected to go with him, and after fourteen months of wandering, they founded Macondo.

Infant Baptism Services

Baptism is a sign of being a part of God's family.

There are different baptisms in various churches with their differing beliefs.

A Roman Catholic baptism usually takes place during a service of Holy Communion, but sometimes they can be private to one family or with other babies being baptised as well.

Buy custom Infant Baptism term paper

Parents and godparents bring the baby into the church and are welcomed by the priest, at the entrance. The baby, once welcomed, has the sign of the cross made on its forehead, as a blessing from the parents and godparents. The priest reads a section about baptism from the bible, and then the child is anointed with oil, as a sign that the child is now dedicated to God, and his church. The godparents say that they reject Satan, and repeat the words of the Creed. The priest pours water, the symbol of new life, three times on the baby's head, as he pronounces " I baptise you (Anne Marie) by the sign of the cross."

The baby has the Oil of Chrism applied to its head, and is wrapped in a white baptismal robe, representing a guard against evil. A baptismal candle is lit, held by a godparent, representing the light of God, showing the way through life.

The Church of England (Anglican) has a similar service for baptising babies, as a Catholic baptism. The baptism is done in a Eucharist service, a family service or more privately.

The Paschal candle is lit for the whole baptism service and by either the parent or godparent. The baby is baptised with water, with the words of, " I give you this sign for now you belong to Christ, the light of the world…" And everyone, including the congregation, states their belief in God.

The Orthodox Church has very little similarities to the Catholic and Anglican baptism services.

The Godparents answer for the baby throughout the service. Once the priest blesses the water, the baby is anointed with oil, and then immersed three times in the water, whilst baptised by the trinity. A cross is placed around the baby's neck, representing the cross of God, which the baby has taken up. Christmation (confirmation) is performed straight after, this is where the baby has Chrism put on its head, eyelids, lips, ears, chest, hands and feet, as a guard against evil. The baby is carried around the font three times and has a small lock of hair cut off.

Believers baptism is where a person who has made their own mind to follow God or renew their faith, is baptised. The service can be slightly different in each church, as there is no set form of the service. Pentecostals and the Brethren Churches, and some Anglican Churches perform this type of baptism. The importance of baptism is explained, and the congregation may join in to show their commitment to God. The service usually consists of a number of people getting baptised together. White clothing is preferable, as a symbol of forgiveness and new life.

The believers read a short passage, and then in turn they enter the pool of water. The minister will say, " (Name), because you have repented your sins, and requested baptism, I now baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." And then the person being baptised is totally immersed in water. The congregation may sing a chosen hymn, once the candidate has left the pool.

In Mark 1 V Jesus is baptised in the Lake of Galilee, at an age where he was able to decide for himself that he wanted to be a part of God more.

Christians and non-Christians baptise their children, because they feel it is the right thing to do. They might want their child to be a part of what they are. Some people it is the safe way, as some believe if a child is not baptised and dies it will not be accepted into Heaven. People want their children to grow up in the teachings of God and His church.

Christian parents in a Roman Catholic or Church of England baptism would continue to bring up their child to be a Christian, by sending them to Sunday school, where they could learn about the Bible. The parents would live a Christian life so the children could follow their example. They would take their children to Church masses showing the way to celebrate God. Prayers could be said before meals and important events. Videos about Jesus and the stories of the Bible could be shown. They could talk about Jesus and what He did. Celebrate the anniversary and death of Jesus. Send their children to school that is for Christians, Anglican or Catholic school. When the children are a little older they would have Holy Communion and be confirmed, which has a good preparation period beforehand through by special classes and maybe a trip.

All these would give the child an insight of the way to lead a Christian life, following the way of God.

"Baptising babies is pointless." I believe that baptising babies isn't pointless as it brings them into the Lord's church and gives them a head start in knowing the ways of God, the Bible, and wrongs and rights. It's a celebration of a new human being, a new lease of life. I can see what people mean when they make this statement, that it is pointless, as the baby can not make its own decision in becoming a part of the Church, it is decided by the guardians of the child. Once the child is older it still has a decision in my eyes because even if it is baptised it can go further, Holy Communion, Confirmation, or just not believe at all.

Not all people believe in baptism and that's entirely up to them, as the Salvation Army and Quakers don't practise baptism.

Baptism is bringing a child into the family of the Lord.

For Christians the most important personal relationship a man and woman can experience is the one of marriage where they become living examples of the task given by God during this Sacrament. A Sacrament is an important stage in a Christian's life. It is an action we can see, but also has an inward significance with a moment with Christ which brings us closer to God. The sacrament of marriage is witnessed by God and this should help the couple understand the importance of the commitment they are about to undergo.

Christians believe that the marriage is lifelong and this is confirmed during the wedding vows where it states, 'till death do us part'. This means that the vows the couple take on their wedding day should influence and guide their personal relationships. The marriage between a man and woman is also exclusive and permanent. They are supposed to stay true to God's Commandment 'Do not commit an adultery' throughout their Christian life.

Catholics have very strong beliefs about the sacrament of marriage as it should contain love, care and respect. The love the couple have for each other should be unconditional and a reflection of the love God has for us and if this is true then the marriage will be successful. This is a teaching from St Paul in the New Testament. The Roman Catholic Church believes that a married couple can reflect the love they hold in their sexual relationship. It should be exclusive, special and faithful and this seen in the promises in the ceremony as the relationship is both lifegiving for the couple because they share their lives, whilst their relationship grows. It is also lifegiving in the sense that their relationship should be open to the possibility for children if they are able to. Catholics believe a sexual relationship should be just within the marriage whereas the Church of England believes it is acceptable as long as the couple love each other and are committed. Another part of this commitment is that you should love and know your partner before marrying.

The Catholic Church is against abortion and artificial methods of contraception whereas the Church of England believes it is acceptable under certain circumstances. Catholics also believe that a couple should not live together until they are legally married. The Bible teaches that the couple should set up alone and live together in a house once married.

Anna Karenina, the classic novel by Leo Tolstoy, proved to not only to be a wonderfully entertaining work of literature but also a great impact. The story of a young woman named Anna touched me, and greatly changed my views of the world with her overwhelming charm. Its realistic characters, conflicts and plot lines with the lectures of destiny, death and human relationships were what I valued most. When the novel first began, Anna is displayed as being a saint, someone everyone wants to befriend and be around, a loving wife and devoted mother. However, as the story progresses her character is completely changed as she falls in love with another man, the young Mr. Vronsky, and her one simple life goes on a roller coaster of ups and downs, ending with a dramatic suicide. The author does an amazing job of developing Anna's character and showing it in a believable way, her life and the extremes it reached. It opened my eyes and made me realize how important it is to grasp a full understanding of the emotions and motives experienced by both sides when a problem occurs. I also found it astounding to see how similar the characters in this novel are to people today. I truly admired the way Leo Tolstoy showed what all the characters were feeling pertaining to a certain issue or topic. For example, in this novel the issue of having affairs and cheating on your spouse is examined, showing the poignant impact it has on all the people involved and even outsiders. This novel allowed the reader to establish a true understanding of what occurs when such a thing happens. Many effective symbols were also used to show the full extent of the chaotic effect of what being unfaithful can have. One big symbolic example was with the train suicides. On the day Anna Karenina first meet Mr. Vronsky someone had committed suicide on the railroad tracks, foreshadowing a dark end to their love affair. I really admired the way the author was able to effectively wrap up the novel's main plot in the same way she began it. It was very creative and had a powerful effect in my opinion. In addition, I respected the way Leo Tolstoy was able to solve problems and conflicts in a verity of different ways and realistically. For example, after being together for a reasonable amount of time, Mr. Vronsky and Anna ran into problems, and the diverse ways Mr.Vronsky tried to get her to be happy again. At first he tried to give her everything from his undivided attention to material things and after that didn't work he tried a new approach of not giving her any attention and just leaving her be. However, this only resulted with her committing suicide, showing me how important it is to find a fine balance when it comes to solving problems and not going to extremes. I like to think of myself as a problem solver, so as I read Anna Karenina I found myself better understanding and relating to the characters, and their solutions to problems. It also allowed me to see the different ways one can deal with situations. In conclusion, I enjoy reading novels off all types and I found this novel not only entertaining but also very educational, it broadened my knowledge on the way to handle situations and allowed me to become more open minded, and for that I am thankful.

Please note that this sample paper on Anna Karenina, is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Anna Karenina,, we are here to assist you. Democracy the Concept; Flourishing in Modern America

Democracy is a philosophy; an intellection and theory that begirds the skeleton of a government. It is a concept of inalienable liberties for the governed who govern. "The spirit of our citizens, rising with a strength and majesty which show the loveliness of freedom, will make this government in practice what it is in principle, a model for the protection of man in a state of free and order." Thomas Jefferson conceived this fact just as I realize it now. Democracy assures freedom and rights to all citizens. It is a concept of freedom and justice to all who live under such a "government." The concept of democracy has evolved over thousands of years amalgamating each additional constituent to the concoction and because of this cultural diffusion of democratic principle democratic theory has commenced what it is today. Democracy has undergone evolutionary adaptation in response to historical circumstances. The sense datum of democracy does thrive in America in our free market economy and free politics.

"Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Is one of Lord Acton's more famous sayings. The more power governments have, the more human insecurity exists. The famous democratic freedom is the main generator of national and individual wealth and prosperity. When each person has the freedom to vote they feel puissant, yet realistically every person bears approximately proportionate might impeding corruption. One politic can always argue with another's positions and decision or intent of action must be backed up by majority vote to enact. The term freedom has a positive connotation. Power, however, infers the

Rosenfeld 2

obstruction and control of an individual's freedoms. The freedom of expression causes the arts to flourish causing a rich culture. Freedom is a method of nonviolence therefore spreading peace. Freedom is what keeps the masses satisfied.

Democracy is derived from two Greek words; demos or people and kratein or to rule. Due to the root of the word democracy originating in Greece, one can only conclude that this is where direct democracy was propagated. The original Greek theory of democracy was a government directly ruled by the people. An Assembly consisting of all citizens was required to meet and vote on important issues. Anyone could be heard and everyone's point of view was subsumed. Abraham Lincoln liked the Athenian model of government very much. He dubbed democracy as government by the people of the people, and for the people. This is the very spirit of democracy today. E.B. White agrees that, "Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half the time."

Simultaneously in the Roman Empire an indirect form of democracy was exercised. Still advocating the majority rule, the Romans elected representatives who stood for groups of people and presented their ideas. All people still had the right to vote. The public still felt as though they had power and everyone still had their rights. This form of representative government prospers in America today. The United States is a product of a culturally diffused philosophy of democracy. Employing the philosophy of common suffrage and popular sovereignty of the Athenian model on the form of the representative "Republican" Roman democratic government, the politically democratic government is alive and booming in modern America.

The general simulacrum of democracy consists of providing its citizens with certain inalienable liberties, for example the fundamental freedom of speech, which affects perception

Rosenfeld 3

on the individual level. Individual minds and opinions are the construction workers of societies. Owing to the fact that democracy has varying definitions in separate contexts and can be interpreted diversely from various perspectives, there exists a very general and flexible acceptation of democracy. In an ideal sense, the concept of democracy can be adapted to inspire people to rebel against a dictator. Playing devils advocate, the United States has sought to impose its democratic model, one strongly flavored with capitalism and commercialism upon other countries in pursuit of beneficiary economic and political objectives. Modern connotation of democracy is still tinted with its ancient Athenian origin but now has many other undertones. It is positive when aimed at the goal of ending governmental persecution and bringing freedom to the oppressed but can be negative when being a selfish motive. Democracy is not a form of government but a loosened term that can act as a utensil or weapon for various causes.

Popular Sovereignty is the "keystone" of democracy. Contributed by the ancient civilization of Greece, popular sovereignty signifies the practice of rule by the people. This comes back to my "society's freedoms" motif. No civil worker can hold office by force or fraud. There are no political hereditary rights. Voting is confidential and free. Also every person is guaranteed the freedom to support whatever political party they fancy. In the survey held in our classroom 84% of the people surveyed voted and only 16% did not. Therefore, majority rule is prevalent here. "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard." H. L. Mencken asserted.

Plato's suggestion of having a Philosopher King or rule by the wise would not be favored by the mob. It would create the image of a dictatorship, which the people would reject due to its

Rosenfeld 4

annihilating suggestion. People would feel subjugated. John Lowell is quoted saying, "Democracy gives everyone the right to be his own oppressor…" so why should we add a further

element of affliction through a "Philosopher King"? All people's participation is not necessary. In the colossal vicinage that our government expands over it would be extremely difficult for every voice to be listened to. By electing representatives for regions the majority sentiments of each region is heeded. The less voices speaking the better chance each voice has to be heard. It is important, however, that every "type" of person is represented so that all opinions are accounted for no matter how unwelcome they may be to enable the entire population to be accounted for.

Capitalism is not the foundation of democracy; quite on the contrary actually. Democracy is the blood that rushes through Capitalism's veins sustaining it's live and well being. Capitalism is the freedom to go into business for oneself and reap all rewards. It is partly through Capitalism that democracy thrives in America. Economic opportunity is a chief autonomy that gives democracy appeal. We live in a material world, and materials cost money. Opportunity has a positive connotation implicating success. The United States has a free market with a competitive economy. Democracy ensures one's freedom to participate in such an economy. When one company expands others go out of business. The pie is only so large and while the affluent keep the dough rolling in the penurious find it even harder to make ends meet. Yes, while everyone does have a dog's chance to cut himself or herself a sliver of the American Dream (we are all guaranteed the pursuit of happiness), there's only so much apple pie to go around and either you gormandize someone else's piece or yours will be devoured. "Capitalism is such a wonderful system because it takes advantage of a human frailty, namely greed. " Eli

Rosenfeld 5

Khamarov is right on the money (no pun intended) in this quote. In our class survey it was observed that 58% of the voters earn below $100,000 yearly. While still not at the poverty line

in the least, for the biased group that was surveyed these voters earn a lower salary per year. These people have apparently not harvested the plums of capitalism to the same extent of the other 42% who made more than $100,000 yearly. Everyone who already hasn't had their piece of pie and even those who have a petite piece are perpetually famished. It is an insatiable demand for a limited quantum. The gap separating the poor and rich can be reduced, but the pinning for the American pie can never be satisfied.

In a democracy where all are equal and resources are limited those who earn higher salaries may be taxed very highly as opposed to those who make a low salary may not be taxed at all or very little. This way the wealthy would not be able to maintain their opulence and the destitute would not be getting more impecunious if at all. The money that the prosperous are taxed may be loaned or given to the poor on a case by case basis. In this method each family or person would plead their case to a local court and the court would judge their situation and decide if they are in need of the money and worthy of it.

Democracy is a theory and because it is just this it is able to thrive in America today through our capitalistic economy and "republican" form of government. Its definition has become wide and flexible due to the cultural diffusion and hysterically evolution to fit a philosophy we now follow and revere today. It can be used as an instrument or a weapon to our benefit. As George Bernard Shaw was once quoted "Democracy is a device that insures we shall be governed no better than we deserve."

In the critical years of America, while under the Articles of Confederation, people were threatened by economic and political instability. In order to preserve the personal freedoms of the people and maintain order, something had to change. The idea of the social contract theory, written by great political scientists, is represented by great political powers coming together in the Continental Congress to discuss the problems and solutions of the Articles of Confederation. The problems of the Articles of Confederation had to be settled in a compromise by all the states. These series of compromises later became known as the Constitution.

A major flaw in the Articles of Confederation was that Congress had no power to make the states follow the Articles of Confederation or the laws it made. The Articles of Confederation established "a firm league of friendship" among the states. The Constitution proposed a bicameral legislature in which there are two houses, one house to create the laws and another to enforce them. Under the Constitution a person can break the rules set by the government but they must face the responsibilities and penalties of their actions. The punishment must be fair to all people to ensure justice for everyone.

Under the Articles of Confederation the Congress didn't have that power to tax, therefore; each state had the power to make their own taxing laws. The states could also print their own money, and set their own trade regulations. This caused chaos to spread throughout the states as prices soared and some states were denied trade from other states. In the Constitution the Congress was given the power to tax, regulate trade and print money. This way every state has the same form of money and all trade and tax regulations are fair and equal among all states.

In the Articles of Confederation the power was held most by each individual state, which made a weak central government. With the states holding most of the power it became difficult to ratify laws and treaties because it had to be taken to each state and nine of the thirteen states had to approve it. Also, the Articles Themselves could only be changed with the consent of all thirteen state legislatures. With the Constitution the power is held mostly by the central government and the local governments are appointed by the central government. With this kind of government, selected representatives from each state, who speak for a group of people, come together to discuss and vote on laws and issues.
