Analysis of "The Road Not Taken"

"The Road Not Taken" represents a familiar moment everybodys lives where they must make a decision. Frost however provokes his audience to step back and weigh up their decisions, as he does when he "looked down one as far as I could" which emphasizes the importance he places in not only looking at the immediate consequences but also the long term consequences his decision could have. Frost uses an extended metaphor of diverging roads representing decisions in one's life. This is a common experience which we are confronted with every day; which choice to make and where that will eventually lead us. He uses first person which enhances the authenticity of the poet's voice, adding a sense of personal experience of his appreciation of nature. He makes free use of sentences, telling a story in a more colloquial manner which engages the audiences as they relate to Frost's position where he says "And sorry I could not travel both" which represents people's struggle to make a make a decision or choice as they can not take both alternatives. Frost's aim is also to encourage people to take risks by straying outside the norm and endeavouring to achieve something different which is illustrated when he says "I took the one less travelled by." However he emphasises to his audience to believe in their choices once made because "that has made all the difference."

Mending Wall

"Mending Wall" provokes the audience to question traditions that have become, over time, the unchallenged and the norm. Frost uses and extended metaphor of a wall dividing two neighbours, which through the forces of nature is broken and torn down each year. This wall is symbolic of boundaries which people set to achieve a sense of security. This sense of security is illustrated by the line "We keep the wall between us as we go" which supports the idea of keeping boundaries for one's own comfort. The line doesnt use a tone which supports why these boundaries are maintained instead, the tone reflects the idea again that the neighbours do not even recognize why they maintain their boundaries apart from tradition. Similarly Frost says "Good fences make good neighbours," again illustrating that men are trapped within a tradition they have never thought of questioning. He provokes the audience to question the necessity to have boundaries in the line "He is all pine and I am apple orchard," where despite differences be that of race, religion, language or age there is no need to block out people who are different. Yet this practice of separating has become so much a part of our culture and society that we conform to it without question. Frost uses an irregular rhythm which imitates the convosation in a slightly more colloquial tone which encourage the reader for their own personal response as well as using a lyrical format to express his regret.

Classical Essay

Imagine that your best friend in the whole wide world has cancer and they've been very sick for a couple of months already. As any other true friend would do, you'd be at the hospital day and night to give moral support and to care for your companion. But everyday you'd see that their condition keeps on getting worse and worse. One day, though, your friends' doctor informs you that he believes that your friend has only a few more months to live. Devastated by the news you walk into your friends' room to cherish the time you have left with them. At that moment you walk in, ironically your friend asks you if they are going to make it through their horrible sickness. Given that information that you just received a while ago from the doctor, how could you tell your best friend that she is on her deathbed? Do you tell them the truth or do you lie to them? Thinking it through you knew that you couldn't tell them the truth. So you decided to tell them a little white lie to give your best friend some hope and encouragement. You also try to assure her that the both of you will fight this disease together and you believe they will beat it. Therefore, the question is, can telling the truth really be the right thing to do at crucial times?

Is it actually always necessary to tell the truth at all times? Is it always the right thing to do? Our society has been brought up to tell the no matter in what situation because the truth is supposed to set you free. Or is it really? If you tell the truth you are considered to be a good and honest person. But on the other hand, people who lie are considered to be bad people who are untrustworthy and nobody likes a liar. So, the question is, if you're caught in a hard situation and the only way to make that situation all right is to lie, do you go against what society tells you or do you tell the truth and maybe make matters harder? Using the example mentioned in the introductory paragraph, I believe that it's ok to tell a little white lie, even though you've been taught to do the opposite. If it's a crucial situation, and your friend is dying how could how could a good and caring person tell their best friend that they will die in a couple of months? By telling a white lie doesn't mean you're a bad person. Ironically, even though you're in fact lying to "your friend" you are actually being a good person for wanting to give them hope and something to live for. If you had told your friend the truth you might have made matters even worse by getting them to lose all hope and maybe even making them give up on their life because "they will die anyways." At times like this or similar to this situation, you'd have to go against society and listen to your heart.

In our day-to-day lives we are faced with many critical problems and situations that we must deal with. But when do you really know when the right time is to tell a lie or the truth? It is in fact quite obvious that telling a white lie is certainly right when faced with sparing someone's feelings, as in the case with my sick friend. But what about another type of situation, for instance, when one has the option to lie in order to benefit themselves? Should they tell the truth even though by doing so they will not receive those benefits? An example of this is in the play King Lear, by William Shakespeare. When King Lear asks his three daughters which one of them loves him the most? His two evil daughters lie to him and tell him exactly what he wants to hear. They do this so they can benefit from their lies to him and receive his kingdom and his riches. On the other hand though, Lear's favorite daughter, Cordelia, tells the truth by saying "nothing" and because of that she did not benefit from her truthfulness. Her father wasn't satisfied with her response to his question so he disowned her from the family. Given that, should you tell the truth and maybe get disowned from "your family" or from your "best friend," in the case of my friend with cancer? Or should you lie just to benefit yourself and save yourself from any problems that would arise if you did tell the truth? It all comes down to one thing again, using your heart and your head. You must use your heart and your head to help you make the right decision in these crucial situations, even if it means to go against society or "your family."

Order Custom to tell the truth? paper

All in all, I firmly believe that honesty is the best policy, unless it's in order to spare one's feelings, never to benefit yourself. As we saw with Cordelia in the end of the play King Lear, we saw that she had gotten back her father's love for her all because she had told the truth. Unlike her sisters, they had lived a miserable life after they actually got Lear's kingdom and riches, all because they had lied in the first place just to benefit themselves. Whatever goes around comes around because the evil sisters ended up dying in pain unlike Cordelia who died in happiness for she was loved by her father again. This also applies to the situation with my best friend. By sparing By sparing their feelings and giving them hope to live, it made me feel good to know that it made them feel good that they had hope for a better life in the future. But do all people feel that way? Would all people do the right thing in these kinds of situations? This is a question that you must ask yourself, would you do the right thing? Do you think that it's the right thing to do, to tell the truth in such crucial situations? This is something that you must have to take into consideration and live your

Dressed to Kill

Dressed to Kill directed by Brian De Palma and Psycho directed by Alfred Hitchcock were similar films in that they are in the same genre of suspense thrillers. Though Psycho was made before Dressed to Kill, it set a precedent for suspense film. Using some of Hitchcocks impressive work as inspiration, De Palma recreated excellent cinematography and heart pounding suspense in Dressed to Kill.

Dressed to Kill used similar cinematography as Psycho in that it had a shower scene in the beginning with a high angle shot. The film used the same technique in the MET scene, as Hitchcock used in the car scene when Marion Crane was being followed during the car scene with the camera behind her. The women in the museum was sitting on a bench and she sees a man with dark hair and sunglasses. She decides to follow him and drops her silver glove, the camera follows her at eye level through the museum. Then he disappears and starts to follow her with the same following camera shot. The scene is very intense. De Palma also uses a high angle shot during the murder scene in the elevator, as Hitchcock did in the shower scene.

The films are also similar in that both killers were men with dark hair and dressed like women, in blonde wigs, except that in Psycho, the killer was schizophrenic and in Dress to Kill the killer was a transvestite. Both killers used a knife or a blade to kill their victims. Though the and scenarios were different in the films, similar techniques in cinematography were used in the scenes to create intense moods and suspense.

Custom Essays on Dressed to Kill

Brian De Palma's Dress to Kill was impressive, coming neck and neck with Psycho, by adapting Hitchcock's mastery of suspense with his own imagination of setting and scene creating a phenomenal film. After seeing Psycho, then Dress to kill, it was fascinating to see the same techniques used in there own creative way.

Every March during the earliest years after the founding of Macondo, a small, isolated village, gypsies arrive with marvelous new inventions magnets, telescopes, and magnifying glasses. The much-respected village founder, Jose Arcadia Buendia, seizes on these inventions as ways to make money and scientific progress. Over the pleadings of his level-headed wife, Ursula Iguaran, he throws himself into countless schemes and plots involving the new inventions. When he becomes friends with Melquiades, the gypsy leader, Jose Arcadia Buendia is inspired to dedicate himself to knowledge and scientific study. He flirts with alchemy and astronomy and becomes increasingly withdrawn from his family and community. His great discovery, that the world is round, causes the whole village to become concerned about his sanity.

Jose Arcadia Buendia was the founder of Macondo and remains its most important citizen‹he oversaw the villages creation and decided how life would be lived there. It was a dreamy, magical place where no one was over the age of thirty and no one died. Therefore Jose Arcadio Buendias obsession with progress affects the whole village. He decides that Macondo must establish contact with the outside world and leads an expedition to find a path to the sea. The men of the village chop through marshes and swamps and discover, among other things, a rusted fifteenth-century suit of armor and a ruined Spanish galleon. But they do not discover the sea, and Jose Arcadio Buendia leads them back home and announces that Macondo is surrounded by water on all sides. Then he decides to move the village to a less isolated place, but Ursula plants opposition among the women of the village and he is forced to abandon that plan.

So he takes an interest in his two sons Jose Arcadio, the eldest, who has his fathers strength but lacks imagination, and the mysterious Aureliano, whose adult name is Colonel Aureliano Buendia. Their father educates them and takes them to the gypsies fair in March, where the three of them see ice for the first time.

The second chapter opens by telling the story of Macondos founding. Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula were cousins in a prosperous village. When they got married, Ursula was fearful that their children would be horribly deformed, as the children of incestuous unions sometimes are. She was particularly afraid because her aunt, married to Jose Arcadio Buendias uncle, had given birth to a miserable son with a pigs tail. So she wore a chastity belt and refused to consummate her marriage while people in the village laughed at Jose Arcadio Buendia. One of these villagers, Prudencio Aguilar, insulted Jose Arcadio Buendia after losing a cock fight. Buendia challenged him to a duel and killed him. Then he went home and told Ursula to remove her chastity belt. After several happy months, Ursula began to see the ghost of Prudencio Aguilar, and soon it became clear that his ghost was haunting them. Overcome with guilt and determined to put Prudencios ghost to rest, Jose Arcadio Buendia decided to leave the village. A small band of hardy souls elected to go with him, and after fourteen months of wandering, they founded Macondo.

Infant Baptism Services

Baptism is a sign of being a part of God's family.

There are different baptisms in various churches with their differing beliefs.

A Roman Catholic baptism usually takes place during a service of Holy Communion, but sometimes they can be private to one family or with other babies being baptised as well.

Buy custom Infant Baptism term paper

Parents and godparents bring the baby into the church and are welcomed by the priest, at the entrance. The baby, once welcomed, has the sign of the cross made on its forehead, as a blessing from the parents and godparents. The priest reads a section about baptism from the bible, and then the child is anointed with oil, as a sign that the child is now dedicated to God, and his church. The godparents say that they reject Satan, and repeat the words of the Creed. The priest pours water, the symbol of new life, three times on the baby's head, as he pronounces " I baptise you (Anne Marie) by the sign of the cross."

The baby has the Oil of Chrism applied to its head, and is wrapped in a white baptismal robe, representing a guard against evil. A baptismal candle is lit, held by a godparent, representing the light of God, showing the way through life.

The Church of England (Anglican) has a similar service for baptising babies, as a Catholic baptism. The baptism is done in a Eucharist service, a family service or more privately.

The Paschal candle is lit for the whole baptism service and by either the parent or godparent. The baby is baptised with water, with the words of, " I give you this sign for now you belong to Christ, the light of the world…" And everyone, including the congregation, states their belief in God.

The Orthodox Church has very little similarities to the Catholic and Anglican baptism services.

The Godparents answer for the baby throughout the service. Once the priest blesses the water, the baby is anointed with oil, and then immersed three times in the water, whilst baptised by the trinity. A cross is placed around the baby's neck, representing the cross of God, which the baby has taken up. Christmation (confirmation) is performed straight after, this is where the baby has Chrism put on its head, eyelids, lips, ears, chest, hands and feet, as a guard against evil. The baby is carried around the font three times and has a small lock of hair cut off.

Believers baptism is where a person who has made their own mind to follow God or renew their faith, is baptised. The service can be slightly different in each church, as there is no set form of the service. Pentecostals and the Brethren Churches, and some Anglican Churches perform this type of baptism. The importance of baptism is explained, and the congregation may join in to show their commitment to God. The service usually consists of a number of people getting baptised together. White clothing is preferable, as a symbol of forgiveness and new life.

The believers read a short passage, and then in turn they enter the pool of water. The minister will say, " (Name), because you have repented your sins, and requested baptism, I now baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." And then the person being baptised is totally immersed in water. The congregation may sing a chosen hymn, once the candidate has left the pool.

In Mark 1 V Jesus is baptised in the Lake of Galilee, at an age where he was able to decide for himself that he wanted to be a part of God more.

Christians and non-Christians baptise their children, because they feel it is the right thing to do. They might want their child to be a part of what they are. Some people it is the safe way, as some believe if a child is not baptised and dies it will not be accepted into Heaven. People want their children to grow up in the teachings of God and His church.

Christian parents in a Roman Catholic or Church of England baptism would continue to bring up their child to be a Christian, by sending them to Sunday school, where they could learn about the Bible. The parents would live a Christian life so the children could follow their example. They would take their children to Church masses showing the way to celebrate God. Prayers could be said before meals and important events. Videos about Jesus and the stories of the Bible could be shown. They could talk about Jesus and what He did. Celebrate the anniversary and death of Jesus. Send their children to school that is for Christians, Anglican or Catholic school. When the children are a little older they would have Holy Communion and be confirmed, which has a good preparation period beforehand through by special classes and maybe a trip.

All these would give the child an insight of the way to lead a Christian life, following the way of God.

"Baptising babies is pointless." I believe that baptising babies isn't pointless as it brings them into the Lord's church and gives them a head start in knowing the ways of God, the Bible, and wrongs and rights. It's a celebration of a new human being, a new lease of life. I can see what people mean when they make this statement, that it is pointless, as the baby can not make its own decision in becoming a part of the Church, it is decided by the guardians of the child. Once the child is older it still has a decision in my eyes because even if it is baptised it can go further, Holy Communion, Confirmation, or just not believe at all.

Not all people believe in baptism and that's entirely up to them, as the Salvation Army and Quakers don't practise baptism.

Baptism is bringing a child into the family of the Lord.

For Christians the most important personal relationship a man and woman can experience is the one of marriage where they become living examples of the task given by God during this Sacrament. A Sacrament is an important stage in a Christian's life. It is an action we can see, but also has an inward significance with a moment with Christ which brings us closer to God. The sacrament of marriage is witnessed by God and this should help the couple understand the importance of the commitment they are about to undergo.

Christians believe that the marriage is lifelong and this is confirmed during the wedding vows where it states, 'till death do us part'. This means that the vows the couple take on their wedding day should influence and guide their personal relationships. The marriage between a man and woman is also exclusive and permanent. They are supposed to stay true to God's Commandment 'Do not commit an adultery' throughout their Christian life.

Catholics have very strong beliefs about the sacrament of marriage as it should contain love, care and respect. The love the couple have for each other should be unconditional and a reflection of the love God has for us and if this is true then the marriage will be successful. This is a teaching from St Paul in the New Testament. The Roman Catholic Church believes that a married couple can reflect the love they hold in their sexual relationship. It should be exclusive, special and faithful and this seen in the promises in the ceremony as the relationship is both lifegiving for the couple because they share their lives, whilst their relationship grows. It is also lifegiving in the sense that their relationship should be open to the possibility for children if they are able to. Catholics believe a sexual relationship should be just within the marriage whereas the Church of England believes it is acceptable as long as the couple love each other and are committed. Another part of this commitment is that you should love and know your partner before marrying.

The Catholic Church is against abortion and artificial methods of contraception whereas the Church of England believes it is acceptable under certain circumstances. Catholics also believe that a couple should not live together until they are legally married. The Bible teaches that the couple should set up alone and live together in a house once married.

Anna Karenina, the classic novel by Leo Tolstoy, proved to not only to be a wonderfully entertaining work of literature but also a great impact. The story of a young woman named Anna touched me, and greatly changed my views of the world with her overwhelming charm. Its realistic characters, conflicts and plot lines with the lectures of destiny, death and human relationships were what I valued most. When the novel first began, Anna is displayed as being a saint, someone everyone wants to befriend and be around, a loving wife and devoted mother. However, as the story progresses her character is completely changed as she falls in love with another man, the young Mr. Vronsky, and her one simple life goes on a roller coaster of ups and downs, ending with a dramatic suicide. The author does an amazing job of developing Anna's character and showing it in a believable way, her life and the extremes it reached. It opened my eyes and made me realize how important it is to grasp a full understanding of the emotions and motives experienced by both sides when a problem occurs. I also found it astounding to see how similar the characters in this novel are to people today. I truly admired the way Leo Tolstoy showed what all the characters were feeling pertaining to a certain issue or topic. For example, in this novel the issue of having affairs and cheating on your spouse is examined, showing the poignant impact it has on all the people involved and even outsiders. This novel allowed the reader to establish a true understanding of what occurs when such a thing happens. Many effective symbols were also used to show the full extent of the chaotic effect of what being unfaithful can have. One big symbolic example was with the train suicides. On the day Anna Karenina first meet Mr. Vronsky someone had committed suicide on the railroad tracks, foreshadowing a dark end to their love affair. I really admired the way the author was able to effectively wrap up the novel's main plot in the same way she began it. It was very creative and had a powerful effect in my opinion. In addition, I respected the way Leo Tolstoy was able to solve problems and conflicts in a verity of different ways and realistically. For example, after being together for a reasonable amount of time, Mr. Vronsky and Anna ran into problems, and the diverse ways Mr.Vronsky tried to get her to be happy again. At first he tried to give her everything from his undivided attention to material things and after that didn't work he tried a new approach of not giving her any attention and just leaving her be. However, this only resulted with her committing suicide, showing me how important it is to find a fine balance when it comes to solving problems and not going to extremes. I like to think of myself as a problem solver, so as I read Anna Karenina I found myself better understanding and relating to the characters, and their solutions to problems. It also allowed me to see the different ways one can deal with situations. In conclusion, I enjoy reading novels off all types and I found this novel not only entertaining but also very educational, it broadened my knowledge on the way to handle situations and allowed me to become more open minded, and for that I am thankful.
