Shirley Willis, Daycare Director, lights up when she talks about the Junior League's involvement at the Dumas Wesley Center, which provides services for senior citizens, neighborhood outreach programs, and day care for children eighteen months and older.

"Children like visitors," Willis explained. "It adds such a bit of spice to their day. Nobody from the League is in a hurry when they come here to volunteer their time. They bring excitement to each child's life."

The Junior League of Mobile has expanded its influence at Dumas in the past few years, adding Super Saturday field trips to the ballet and Exploreum, bringing an in-house zoo called Uncle Joe's to the corridors of Dumas's halls, and, most importantly, convincing children that reading is fun and essential to future success.

The Junior League has been instrumental in promoting the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program at Dumas. Willis was quick to point out a League volunteer who was reading a story to a group of preschool students on the day she was interviewed.

Custom Essays on Don Quixote's "Impossible Dream"

"Many League volunteers know exactly how to bring that shy child out of her or his shell. They ask them to turn the page when they read aloud to the group. Or they simply make them assistants to the learning process."

"They also let the children play with their hair and sit in their laps. This makes a very important impact because the kids aren't as frightened when they go to a doctor or dentist. They are used to being close to someone."

As she walked the preschool halls, Willis mentioned an even more profound message that the League was sending through its volunteerism at Dumas Wesley "We live in a mean world right now, with terrorism and racism. Having these volunteers here bridges that racial gap just a little bit each day because most of our students are African-American, and most volunteers here are white."

She then referred to the laminating machine and dye cut machine that the League helped provide for her daycare center. However, the director is most fond of relating JLM's assistance in funding the afternoon visits of a professional art teacher, who taught the Dumas residents arts and crafts. With pride, she led me to the cafeteria where children's art has been framed and mounted on the walls.

"This is my favorite," she says, pointing to particularly colorful montage of kaleidoscope images. "The kids are so proud when they see their work displayed like this."

Willis listed the League's involvement in other projects at Dumas. These include preschool computer pals, summer recreation, etiquette courses, and outreach counseling.

According to the Junior League website, a total of thirty-three dedicated women are placed in Dumas Wesley each year. They give hours of time to create a kaleidoscope of action that embraces diversity and the individual potential of every child.

Fannie Lou Hamer

Fannie Lou was an African American woman born on 117 to a sharecropper. Fannie was one of twenty children who lived in a little shack with no electricity or running water, in Ruleville Mississippi. This city, heart of the Mississippi delta, was home to lush river vallies. Her and the rest of her family belonged to a plantation owner who produced a lot of cotton. She worked for twelve to fourteen hours a day just picking cotton. Fannies mothers name was Mrs. Ella Townsend; her fathers was Mr. Jim Townsend. Fannie had a husband who also worked on the plantation she worked on; his name was Perry Pap Namer.

"The Black Widow"

The game of billiards was originated sometime in the 15th century. It was a game for all kings, commoners, presidents, gentlemen and even ladies. Through the years it has evolved from being an outdoor lawn game to a game indoors on a wooden table. Outdoor pool used maces but when the game moved indoors a cue stick was used. The cue stick was invented in the late 1600's but was only accessible to men. It was said that women were not allowed to use a cue because they were more likely to rip the cloth with the sharper cue. I am sure that the inventors of the game could have never imagined that 400 years later a woman would be dominating the game of pool. Not only is she dominating the game, she is using a cue and not ripping the cloth. Instead she is ripping through headlines and developing into a known sports figure. Her name is Jeanette Lee.

Jeanette Lee was born on July , 171 in Brooklyn New York. Her home was bilingual so she was taught both Korean traditional values and the American ideal of pursuing opportunity. At age thirteen she was diagnosed with scoliosis. To relieve some of the pain doctors inserted a steel rod in her back. This painful procedure was done to slow the debilitating condition. Jeanette was always a good student. She was accepted at the prestigious Bronx high school of Science, with the expectation of pursuing a conventional career and eventually college. Then in 18 all of her plans drastically changed; she discovered the game of pool.

Jeanette Lee at the age of eighteen was immediately hooked on the game of pool. She would play for ten to twelve hours a day, she studied books about pool, and she even befriended "old school" pool players. She was driven by her goals and aspirations to be the best player in the world. This disappointed her parents who wanted her to go to college and have a good career. They thought that she spent all of her time hanging out with her friends in the pool hall and wasn't doing anything productive. Little did they know that less then two years later their daughter would be one of the best players in the world.

Order Custom Essay on Sports Figure

Jeanette's list of achievements is endless, but it all started in 1 when she qualified for her first pro event. In that tournament she finished third. In the following year she was runner up in the WPA World Championship events in Konigswinter, Germany and Chicago, Illinois. She was ranked number eight in the world and this was only her third year of playing pool. In 14 she took back-to-back victories at the "Baltimore Billiards Classic" and the "Kasson Twin Cities Classic." It is during this time that she earned her nickname, "The Black Widow", which she got from the way she devours her opponents in the game and her tradition of wearing all black in tournament games. And since 1 she has been the most dominating female pool player in history. She has played in countless tournaments and still does to this day. Thus she has such recognition as "Player of the year" which she got in 14 and "Sports person of the year" in 18.

Not only is she one of the best pool players in the world, her participation in charity events and her endorsements in a variety of products have made her famous. She founded the Jeanette Lee foundation which soul purpose is to demonstrate that any goal can be achieved. She is on the Board of Directors, a vice president of funding, for Scoliosis Association Inc., and is on the Board of Trustee for the Women's Sports Foundation. Her exotic beauty has earned her groundbreaking endorsement deals such as her own line of Jeanette Lee pool cues. She has an endorsement deals with Imperial International, who is her sponsor, McDermott Cues and Sir Joseph Cues. She has also been featured in a music video and has her own CD-ROM game. While her spectacular performances have earned her honors from every pool program imaginable, her outspoken personality and single-minded determination have earned her covers on such publications as The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, People, Glamour and Sports Illustrated. She has also been featured on ESPN, EXTRA, MTV and VIBE TV.

Jeanette Lee is now thirty with a husband (professional pool player George Breedlove) and two stepdaughters, Morgan and Olivia. She is currently residing in Indianapolis, IN and is continuing on with her professional career of billiards. Jeanette has made the game of pool much more publicized and known, more than ever before. With the exception of such pool players as Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason, pool would be nowhere without Jeanette Lee. It would still be categorized as a sport for men and not have as much publicity as it should. Now the "Black Widow" is in the ranks of "The Hustler" and "Minnesota Fats" when it comes to the best pool players in history. She is now a powerful, dedicated, talented and inspired women with a pool cue, not a mace, and I can guarantee she will not rip the felt. All I know is that every moment Im alive I want to do what I want to do, not what I have to do. Jeanette Lee

Many times the title of a play suggests the theme of the story and many other themes. A Doll's House, by Henrik Ibsen, is one of many plays that display the relationship of the title to the theme.

A Doll's House is a play about Nora, a woman who experiences a moment of clarity in which she finds herself. In the play, Torvald, Nora's husband became sick and in order to help her husband regain his health, Nora secretly borrowed money without his permission, from Krogstad, the man who Torvald plans to fire. Krogstad threatens Nora that he will tell Torvald in desperation to keep his job. Nora pleads with Torvald to let Krogstad keep his job, but this only makes him want to fire Krogstad even more. Although Nora tries very hard to keep Torvald from receiving the blackmail letter from Krogstad, she fails to do so and he receives the letter. After reading the letter of blackmail, Torvald accuses Nora of being a liar and a hypocrite. When Krogstad returns the forged note, Torvald immediately forgives Nora. At this epiphanal moment, Nora realizes that her father and husband have treated her the same way, like a doll. Nora even realizes that her children were also being treated like dolls. Nora, with her new found independence, realizes that she has a sacred duty to herself and must educate herself away from Torvald and the children. This angers Torvald because he feels like Nora is abandoning her family her family. After all is said and done, both characters realize that a change has to be made to regain their marriage.

Ibsen's play has many themes that makes the common mind wonder. One theme is one of self-discovery, and in the play both characters have to discover themselves. Another theme Ibsen presents is one of morality. In the play Torvald tells Nora that her sacred duty is to her family first. She admits that most people would agree with him, showing that many of society's values are false. Despite Nora saying this, Nora believes that her sacred is to herself and then her family. The last theme that I will discuss is the role of women in this play. At the beginning of the play and halfway through, everything that Torvald says to Nora is right and so is everything that he does. He treats Nora like a child and he treats he like she doesn't know anything throughout the entire play. Nora finally realizes that this isn't the way that she wants to live and finally decides to move out and start a new life to find out who she really is. This brings about a question to men and women. What really is a woman's role in society according to the play? There are many other themes brought up in Ibsen's play, but these are only some important themes that I discovered in A Doll's House.

Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, is a very good play and obviously displays the relationship of the title to the theme. It also displays how the title of a work can create many themes in relation to the title of a work. The next time you are reading a work, see if the title is in comparison with the theme as it is in A Doll's House.

Literary Criticisms of Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow

There seems to be a never-ending debate on whether popular literature or artistic literature is more appealing and more importantly contributes to its society. Completely transcending this debate is Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow. It has undeniable proven its success in both areas. Unlike other works of art whose freshness makes them too difficult for widespread audiences, Ragtime became a best-seller in its hardcover edition during the mid 170s when it was released. Every American family seemed to have a copy of the literature. Doctorow and Ragtime instantly became a household name. Although it is hard to believe that an event like Ragtime could happen more than once in an author's lifetime, it seemed that every single one of Doctorow's releases turned into a literary event after the huge success of Ragtime. Like all books, it is never perfect and can never please its critics who seems to find the littlest faults about the novel. It is sure that most reviewers like Newsweek's Walter Clemons, Fiction International's Daniel J. Cahill, and American Literature's Barbara Foley can agree that Doctorow took the combination of historical and imaginary characters, a technique often used in historical novels but with only weak results, and manipulated these characters into a rich blend of writing that is entertaining, challenging, and most importantly brings forth the spirit of the time. Ragtime deals with a clashing culture with its victims and victimizers in the early turn-of-

the-century post World War I.

Walter Clemons of Newsweek points out in his article entitled "Houdini, Meet Ferdinand," that many events like Younger Brother's love affair with Evelyn Nesbit is of course fictional. But there is Evelyn Nesbit's meeting with Emma Goldman, Henry Ford's with J.P. Morgan, Houdini's encounter with the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination will touch off World War I and close out the era of ragtime? Did Houdini really become one of the first person to own a plane? And did he really spend the later years of his life looking into was to communicate with the dead to only come up empty hearted. Doctorow pushed the reader beyond his book to search for the validity of his characters. He claims that its admonitory epigraph from Scott Joplin, "Do not play this play fast. It is never right to play Ragtime fast" is impossible to obey. One can just rapidly read through the book to get know the ending but in order to really understand and grasp the magnificence of Ragtime, one must trace through the lines of events, coincidences and chance meetings of the men and women of the industrial manufacturing of America in a place where "the forms of life were volatile…and everything could as easily be something else (p. 7, 76)," could one truly comprehend the magnificence of Ragtime. Through this one find historical resonates in a fresh way to orchestrate the themes of American innocence, energy and inchoate ambition in a place with disorder and disillusion.

Order Custom Essay on Ragtime Criticism

Daniel J. Cahill's article entitled "History As the Dreams of Its People," in Fiction International supports the idea that Ragtime incorporates historical characters into a rare view of American life before World War I. It shows a family seeking its way toward the

dreams of a peculiar brand of human achievement and ultimately to the ironic discovery of the dissolution of its dreams. Pointing out that Ragtime brings Harry Houdini to the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, but he also incorporates elements of fiction that force the readers to bring forth their own personal information of history to differentiate the facts from the fictions in the book. It can be argued that Ragtime "seizes the feel of human actuality and recreates a crucial turning in the "great experiment" of American life-a fusion of fact and interpretation, of history and imaginative illumination. (18 11)." It is important to point out that Ragtime offers no ready references of ethical directions or indirections, leaving to the readers to interpret using their experience to feel the true message being conveyed.

Barbara Foley of American Literature argued in her article entitled "From 'U.S.A.' to 'Ragtime' Notes on the Forms of Historical Consciousness in Modern Fiction," that Ragtime is a satirized commentary upon the development of American society in the early years of the twentieth century. Doctorow seemed to focus on problems stemming from sexual and racial oppression in the prewar period. While containing numerous sketches of historical personages, it incorporates fictional events with nonfiction characters while also adding true events that draws from the minds of the readers to test their history knowledge. Only through this way is the reader able to filter the fact from the fiction. It also does not contain and clear-eyed standard of ethical judgment but leaves it to the reader to determine from his or her own experience the morality of the characters and determination of the character's role.

Please note that this sample paper on Ragtime Criticism is for your review only.
