My favorite store is Yumowu Supermarkets, which are the chain stores only available in Taichung. As long as I am in Taichung, I usually go there at least one time every week. There are several reasons why I like to go shopping in Yumowu. First, it is close to my home. Yumowu is located on Yong-Chun East Road in Taichung. It only takes me ten minutes to Yumowu from my house by scooter so I can go there anytime I want. Second, it opens 4 hours. Although it is midnight, I still can go there and buy things if it is necessary.

Third, Yumowu is bright and clean, and well stocked. I hardly smell stench in this supermarket whereas I always smell strongly sweet smell of bread. When I go shopping in other stores, I always have one problem. I can¡¦t find out the products in a short time. In Yumowu, however, its well organizations and directions won¡¦t cause any problems. There are about five rows for daily use, four rows for snacks, two rows for flavorings, three blocks for vegetables, two blocks for products made by milk, one block for ice and more. Customers can find things on their shopping lists easily. Finally, Yumowu sells a wild variety of goods. I can buy anything I need in my daily life, such as vegetables, fruits, beverages, snacks, daily use and so on. A store which sells everything is very convenient. I do not have to buy different things in different stores. I can take my time and buy all of things I want in ONE store ¡V Yumowu.

These four points are my reasons why I like Yumowu Supermarkets. If you have a change to go to Taichung, please drop by and do some shopping in Yumowu. I can assure you that you will love it forever.

Did you know that since 177, the median home price in the bay area has increased about 00%? In Santa Clara County about 8,000 new jobs were recently created; in that same time, only about 4,000 new housing units became available. More than 60% of employees in the Bay Area live outside the Bay Area like Tracy, Stockton, Modesto, Antioch, Pittsburgh and so on because they can not afford the high priced housing in the Bay Area.

What is affordable housing? To the federal government, housing is considered affordable if it cost no more than 0% of the monthly house income for rent and utilities. For example, if your household income is somewhere about $60,000 dollars a year then you should pay no more than $1,500 dollars a month for your rent and utilities put together. Another way to look at it is if you are in a sales job making only $1.00 dollars an hour then you should not be paying no more than $64 dollars a month in rent and utilities together. But as you know, that's way of the picture when it comes to the Bay Area. In order to be able to afford at least a two bedroom apartment in the Bay Area you have to earn at least $7.6 an hour. As far as the rest of the U.S., you can earn only about $1.87 and still be able to afford a two bedroom apartment. House Prices rise every year making it harder and harder for a middle class family to afford to live in the Bay Area. From last year 001 to this year 00 they say that the housing price went up .%. In the Bay Area houses that were about $8,000 last year in 001 are now about $417,000 this year in 00. So you can see the difference in just one year. Think about how high housing prices and how difficult it will be to be able to live in the Bay Area about ten years from now.

Why build affordable housing and who needs it? People who live in affordable housing today want safe, decent housing for the same reasons that we all do. Those reasons are mainly to provide a nurturing environment to raise their children. Another reason is to remain in the community where they were raised or to become part of a community in which they want to settle. Finally, to live in an attractive, safe environment that they can afford. People who need affordable housing are ones that are employed as secretaries, school teachers, local government employees, restaurant workers and sales clerks. These workers need affordable housing because of the wide gap between what they earn and what housing costs. Others who need affordable housing are seniors and people with disabilities. Seniors have a hard time trying to affording housing because they have fixed incomes that they rely on such as pensions and social security. Disabled people are also living with limited incomes which makes it hard for them to afford a house in the Bay Area and need affordable housing

When you mention a comedy duo, you can't leave out the "Loco" routine of Cheech and Chong. Their movies and comedy albums were created with a style like no other. They portrayed the drug culture of the 70's, and the Mexican American culture of California in the 70's. Speaking for my generation, I think they broke the boundaries for funny film and laid the track for today's comedy. I believe People look back on these movies and records as classics, and laugh and wonder how these two opposites attract. It was meant to be that these to would join forces, but it all had to start somewhere and that place is California.

Born in East Los Angeles, Richard Marin was one of eight children of a L.A. police officer. He earned the nickname "Cheech" from a Chicano food made of deep-fried pork skins called cheecharone. During high school Cheech skipped most of his classes to cruise in the lowriders his friends had. Lowriders were the classic sedans that were lowered to the ground, and were popular among the L.A. youth. With all the classes Cheech missed, he still managed to graduate with straight As. It was also during this time that he started singing with neighborhood rock bands, like Rompin Richie and the Rockin Robins, and Captain Shagnasty and his Loch Ness Pickles. Cheech worked his way through college as a dishwasher, janitor, and other odd jobs. After earning a B.A. in English from Cal State Northridge, he went north in 168 to study potters art, and not knowing he would start a career with Tommy Chong.

Tommy Chong was born in Calgary Canada to a father of Chinese origin, and a mother of Scotch-Irish descent. This made for an ethnic mixture that accounts for his one-of-a kind appearance. Later as Cheech puts it, He was the first kind of whatever it is he is that Id ever seen. Soon after he was born his family moved to a town called Dog Patch, where they lived in a five hundred dollar house. Chongs father was a World War II veteran, and a truck driver that could only raise his family on fifty dollars a week. During Chongs high school years he decided to drop out. He worked several jobs like truck driving and roof laying, while he tried to form successful musical groups. He eventually came up with Western Canadas first R&B band, the Shades. In 165 Motown Records Signed Chongs band the Vancouvers, who only had one hit single. Co-written by Chong and since recorded by the Jackson Five, Does Your Mama Know About Me was the hit single. He left his musical group and headed to Vancouver where his brothers nightclub would be the place Cheech and Chong teamed up.

The relationship was made when Chong offered Cheech sixty dollars a week to perform with City Works, Chongs improvisational comedy group. Cheech took the offer because he made five dollars more than he was making laying carpet. Two years later, when City Works disbanded, they teamed as Cheech and Chong and set out to conquer the world. They started out in California, performing at L.A.s outstanding Troubadour Club. Here they were spotted by a record executive and signed. By the time their first record album Cheech & Chong went gold, they had already started their second album called Big Bambu." Big Bambu was one of the popular Marijuana cigarette papers used back in their time. This album was voted 17s No. 1 comedy album. Around this time was when they really exploited the drug culture of the 70's and came out with their first movie Up in Smoke. The plot behind the movie was Cheech and Chong being out of work, in debt and hustling for money by doing anything the law prohibited. The pictures box office success made them the screens most successful comedy team of all time.

Cheech and Chongs third album titled Los Cochinos brought them a Grammy Award. They didn't do as well on their fourth, Cheech & Chongs Wedding Album, but it encouraged them to tour the concert circuit. Their second movie, cleverly titled Cheech & Chongs Next Movie, had the box office "booming." At that point in Cheech and Chong's career, the combined total of both their movies passed the $160 million mark. With their successful move into films, Cheech and Chong settled into comfortable homes in Los Angeles. Cheech has found his nice dreams in Malibu and Chong is Up in smoke in Bel-Air. No one would of thought these to totally different people, one from L.A. one from Canada, one a Mexican American the other Chinese, would share a comedy style and collaborate to make a wonderful thing that is Cheech and Chong.

Margaret Hilda Thatchers overwhelming sense of self-confidence and

ambition ruled her life from the time she was a small child in Grantham, though

her Oxford years and during her early years in politics. It led her to become

the first female Prime Minister of Great Britain, and also helped through her

difficult political years as Attila the Hun.

Britains first female Prime Minister was born on October 1, 15 in a

small room over a grocers shop in Grandham, England. Margaret Hilda was the

second daughter of Alfred and Beatrice Roberts. She often stated that she was

brought up very strictly

I owe everything in my life to two things a good home, and a good education.

My home was ordinary, but good in the sense that my parents were passionately

interested in the future of my sister and myself. At the same time, they gave

us a good education - not only in school, but at home as well (Gardiner, 175,

p.1).

As a child, thrift and practicality were instilled in Margarets

character. The Methodist church played an active part in the lives of the

Roberts. She attended good schools as a child and spent her years studying with

the intent of attending Oxford. Margaret arrived at Oxford in the autumn of

14. During her years here, Margaret worked in a canteen for the war effort,

continued her interest in music by joining various choirs and joined the Oxford

University Conservative Association where she became very active in its

political activities.

After Oxford, Margaret became the youngest female candidate of the

Dartford Association. She was unofficially engaged to Denis Thatcher at this

time, and they married in December 151. Twins were born the following year.

During this period, she studied law and was admitted to the bar in 154. In the

same year she was a candidate for the Oysington Conservative Association.

Margaret won in a Tory landslide at Finchley, a suburb of London in 15.

Her parliamentary career had begun. A stroke of good luck gave her the

opportunity of presenting her first bill almost immediately. This bill was to

allow the press to attend the meetings of the local councils. The bill was

eventually passed and it greatly enhanced her reputation. In 164 she was part

of the opposition and saw the other side of politics. Between 170 and 174

Thatcher was the Secretary of State for Education and Science. She enjoyed the

tough verbal conflict of parliamentary debates. She had a quick mind and an

even quicker tongue, along with an enormous self-confidence. She liked to fight

and liked to win.

In 175, the Conservatives were the first party in Britain to chose a

woman as leader and potential Prime Minister

It was the backbenchers, not the Leader, or his Shadow Cabinet, who forced a

ballot, and it was a backbenchers- candidate who emerged triumphant from it.

When the election was announced on January , and in the first ballot

Anne Bradstreet went through many things in her life and was also one of the greatest

poets of the 17th century and one of the first poets to wirte an English verse in the American

colonies.

Order Custom Essay on Anne Bradstreet

Anne Bradstreet was the first American woman to speak about individual feelings in

Puritan society that believed the purpose of writting should be moral instruction.

Anne Bradstreet was the daughter of Thomas Dudley and Dorothy Yorke. She was

borned in Northamptonshire, England in 161. Thomas Dudley her father was the chief steward

of Theophilus Clinton, the Puritan Earl of Lincoln and after he was a governor of Massachusetts

Bay colony. Anne Married Simon Bradstreet at the age of 16 in 168, and lived in the household

of the countess of the Warwick. Two years later Anne, Simon and her parents sailed with other

Puritans to Massachusettes on a ship named the Arbella to America. Anne was 18 years and had

benefited from a good education in the noble households and also was a firm puritan in religion.

After short stays in Salem, Charlestown, and Newtown they settled in Ipswich where she had

eight children and a happy marriage. She wrote her poems while bearing her children,

functioning as a hotess, and performing domestic duties. The Bradstreet moved frequently in the

Massachusettes colony until they found Andover which became their permanent home. A

housewife with eight children, she was also the first important poet in the American colonies.

Anne wrote many of the poems that were published in The Tenth Muse (London 1650) which

was generally considered the first book of original poetry written in colonial America. Through

her poems she asserted the right of women to learn and express their thoughts. Even though

some of her verses were conventional, much of it was direct and showed sensitivity to beauty.

Anne Bradstreets brother-in-law took her manuscript back to England and had it printed

without her knowing it. They were published as The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America.

The first American edition of The Tenth Muse was published and expanded from as several

poems with a great variety of wit and learning, full of delight; especailly is contained a complet

discourse, and description of the four elements, constitutions, ages of man, seasons of the year.

Together with an exact epitome of the first three monarchyes, viz, the Assyrian, Persian,

Grecian. And beginning of the Romane Comon-wealth to the end of their last king with diverse

other pleasant and serious poems, by a gentlewoman in New-England, also several other poems

found amongst her papers after her death. Most of the poems in the first edition are long and

imitative works based on the standard poetic conventions of the time, but the last two

poems--Of the Vanity of All Worldly Creatures and Davids Lamentation for Saul and

Jonathan--are individual and genuine of her own feelings. Her later poems, written for her

family, show her spiritual growth as she came fully to accept the Puritans. She also wrote more

personal poems of considerable beauty, talking about her thoughts before childbirth and her

response to the death of a grandchild. These shorter poems benefit from their lack of imitation.

Her prose works include Meditations, a collection of succinct and pithy aphorisms. She also

wrote To my dear and loving Husband which is a more personal poem, expressing her feelings

about the joys and difficulties of everyday Puritan life. Another edition of her work was edited

by John Harvard Ellis in 1867. In 156 the poet John Berryman paid tribute to her in Homage to

Mistress Bradstreet, a long poem that talks about and has to do with many phrases from her

writings.

Six years after Anne Bradstreets death, poems appeared among her papers. It is unclear

whether the corrections in the 1678 edition truly belonged to Anne. For that reason, the texts of

all poems in this edition, where possible, come from the first edition. Josephine K. Piercy wrote

and introduction to as facsmile reproduction of this book The Tenth Muse (1650), and, from

the Manuscripts, Meditations Divine and Morall Together with Letters and Occasional Pieces

(Gainesville, Florida Scholars Facsmiles and Reprints, 165; PS 711 A1 165 ROBA). Until

today it is said that after her death some poems found among her papers werent hers, for the

reason that her brother-in-law took her work and proclaimed to be his own. Many of her poems

were re-written by other poets but still put in her name for it.

The technique of producing foie gras may actually go as far back as the ancient Egyptians. Researchers have discovered painting on tombs dating as far back from the fourth and fifth Egyptian dynasties, showing farmers holding geese by the neck and feeding them packed balls of grain, to increase their weight quickly. This method, called gavage, has basically gone unchanged, and its principles are still used today. It has been theorized that a farmer in Egypt had a flock of geese, and for some reason, one bird aquired an enormous appetite. When that goose was finally killed by the farmer for consumption, the farmer discovered that this goose had an enormous liver that he found to be quite delicious. (Gascony 5)

Foie gras also was utilized by the ancient Romans. Evidence can be found in their poems and literature, which featured the fattened livers of geese. A Roman that has been said to have advanced the technique to produce foie gras was Consul Quintus Caecilius Metullus Pius Scripio. He fed his geese a diet of figs to give the livers and meat extra sweetness. Half a century later, Roman, Marcus Gavius Apicius, applied the technique to ducks and pigs. (Gascony 5)

Foie gras was continued to be produced throughout the years, and by the fifteenth century it had become a thriving industry. The boom first began with geese, and then it later ducks. It was not until 1747 that the first published recipe using foie gras was produced. It was called "Pate de foie gras". It consisted of fresh sliced foie gras, seasoning it with truffles and baking it in puff pastry. This recipe was published in Amsterdam. (Gascony 5)

After Christopher Columbus returned from the new world, he brought with him corn. A new type of cereal was born. Not only that, since corn had replaced figs in south western French diets, the entire region turned to corn production, to become the known as the "foie gras region". Later, the development of sterilization allowed foie gras to extend to the rest of France, which today is known for its excellence of its foie gras. (The Impressionists Foie Gras)

Still to this day, United States law prohibits the importation of fresh meat, so foie gras of any kind from the European nations is unknown. Imported foie gras can only be purchased in can form. "In the New York Catskill Mountains at a farm called Common Wealth Enterprises Products Corporation, scientists have cross bread the Pekin and the Muscovy duck to yield moulards (Gascony 6)." This is the only combination that was found to produce fattened livers that equal the size and quality of those ducks bred in France. According to American and French Chefs the foie gras produced have on a commercial level seem to be almost identical to those produced in France.

The method of production of foie gras has remained relatively unchanged for 4500 years. Once the mallard eggs hatch they are sorted by sex. Female ducks are sold, because they have been found to produce a poor quality foie gras, and are used for meat. The males are transported to a nursery. Their nails are clipped to prevent them from harming one another. At this stage, they are given high-protein feed, vitamins and water and temperature is kept warm. This keeps a good environment for fast, stress free growth. They move down the line of pens as they get older, where the youngest are at one beginning of the line, and the oldest at the very end. Once they reach 1 to 14 weeks old, the ducks are brought to the feeding barn. They are put into large pens 10-1 per pen, the lights are dim, and numerous fans maintain a warm breeze. The highest stress day for the duck is the first day of feeding. This is due to the ducks never really being in contact with humans or fed by hand. Duck feeding ratio is generally 50 ducks to one employer. Those ducks that the employer feeds that day, will be the only ones allowed to feed those particular ducks. This lessens the stress on the duck. On the first day the ducks are fed twice, once in the morning and then later on in the afternoon. There is a plastic funnel with a small electric motor attached above every pen The feeder puts the duck between his/her legs, one hand opens the ducks mouth and the other hand feels the ducks throat to ensure it is empty,. He/she then inserts the funnel into the ducks mouth. The tube is gently moved down to the ducks crop. Then feed is put into the funnel activating a motor moving the food down the tube and into the ducks crop. After the feed is gone the duck is taken to the water trough. Overfeeding the bird could result in stress in the duck, and would require it to be discontinued from the feeing process.

By the second day, the ducks should be used to the feeding procedure, and its feeding is increased to three times a day. During the first two weeks, the ducks are developing body fat. The liver also is getting white from the corn, but has not yet expanded. The growth of foie gras does not take place until around the seventeenth day. As it expands it becomes beige, but loses air due to a hole in the liver. The grading factor decides how it is to be fed from this point on. For grade A foie gras the farmer must continuously feed the ducks until it is time for them to be process. For B grade foie gras, you want the liver to be softer, so you don't feel them the day before they are set to be slaughtered.

Once at the processing plant, the ducks are killed, bled and cleaned. The liver cannot be removed immediately afterwards. It is too soft to be removed, so in the mean time the carcass is chilled overnight. The following day the bird is USDA inspected for wholesomeness. Then the liver is removed, weighed, graded and then placed on ice. The rest of the duck is separated and packaged. The feathers are shipped to pillow manufacturers, and the tongues and feet sent to Chinese markets. It takes one to three days for this foie gras to be sent out after it is taken from the carcass.

The first issue with producing foie gras is that many people including the animal rights activists consider it inhumane the way they feed the ducks. Farmers would say otherwise. Foie gras consists of a small part of the United States poultry industry. Unlike many luxury goods that the animal right people fight against like furs, which the animal it came from is more or less unused, the entire duck is utilized. As I stated earlier, the feathers are used for pillows, the legs and wings are used for confits, the fat is used as a cooking medium, carcasses for stocks, and tongues sold to Asian markets. As for the inhumanity during the feeding, the method is not at all harmful or fatal to the duck. These birds do in fact overeat before going on long flights to amass energy. Also, a ducks throat is not the same as humans. It is designed to accommodate large pieces of food, meaning the tube going down their throat cause no discomfort.

As much as one must think, foie gras does not have an adverse affect on ones health. It is not consumed enough to have any effect on a persons health. Nutritionists say that all negative affects by the saturated fat contained in foie gras are counteracted by Oleic acid, which is found in the Mediterranean diet. In France during the 10's, there was a diet developed that consisted of just eating foie gras, cheese and drinking wine called the "Montignac Diet (Foie Gras a Passion 85)". Foie gras contains Vitamin A, and enough iron to meat one third of the daily requirements for a woman and half for a man.

Due to the high perish ability of foie gras, you will not find it readily available at retail outlets outside the US. Foie gras is sold in individual vacuum packages. Livers should be kept in these packages until used. Fresh foie gras will last about two weeks inside its vacuum package. Once removed it should be used immediately or wrapped in plastic wrap and used within two days since it oxidizes coming in contact with air. The ideal temperature of foie gras in the refrigerator is around degrees. If it is to be frozen, it can last up to a year. Frozen foie gras should only be used for sauces, and mousses, because the freezing dehydrates the liver, losing its creamy properties. The weight loss on foie gras is usually around 15 to 0 percent, whereas goose liver it is 5-40 percent.

To clean foie gras, it first after removing it from the packaging, it must be rinsed and patted dry. A traditional French method would be to soak the liver in salted milk for several days.
