"A Room with a View" is the story of three people mainly; Lucy, the conflicted young woman, Cecil, the pompous upper class gentleman, and George, the love of Lucy's life. Throughout the story there is much back and forth between Cecil and George on the account of Lucy. She is like a plastic bag caught up in the wind, uncertain which direction to blow. Cecil is of the upper class as is Lucy so if she chooses Cecil than others around her would most likely think higher of her because she would have stayed in her social class. George is of a lower class than Lucy and is by no means rich. In choosing him Lucy would also be choosing an unsecured financial future. Also there would be the sting of those close to her alienating her because of her choice. With that said George is whom she truly loves. In "A Room with a View" by Forster no matter what the outward social pressure true love will transcend social class.

One of the main themes expressed in the novel is passion. Lucy, the main character in the novel, has passion reserved for George Emerson. "Throughout the novel she learns to trust the wholeness of her instinct towards George rather than the attractive aestheticism of Cecil." (Beer, John) She chooses George over Cecil, who would be the more obvious choice at first glance. "When she talked to George, his voice moved her deeply, and she wished to remain near him."(18) Lucy is jubilant whenever she is around George and she truly enjoys his company. In the novel when Lucy is in Italy she leans much more toward passion. This is in stark contrast with how Lucy tends to act while in Britain where she is from. Italy is a much more seductive, romantic atmosphere than the traditional and by comparison boring Britain. If Lucy follows her heart and what she truly wants than her choice for a partner in life will clearly go hand in hand with passion and would be George.

If Lucy was to bow to convention and choose Cecil as her partner then she would be following the crowd, not thinking for herself, and turning her back on what she believes. However Cecil would be the conventional choice for Lucy. Her and Cecil are of the upper social class of Britain. It may seem like a becoming match to those on the outside looking in. "The portrait of Cecil is equally authoritative. He is a man who finds it difficult to become emotionally involved even with an attractive woman." (Meyers, Jeffery) Cecil is a quite shallow man who's main concern is for himself and what is best for him. "He (Cecil) became self-conscious and kept glancing round to see if they were observed."(105) Cecil cares a lot about his social status and how other people feel about him. He likes to know that everyone likes him and what is going on, often at the expense of his personal relationships. Even with an attractive, intelligent woman like Lucy it is hard for Cecil to get past himself and commit to anything. Another reason that would make it seem logical for Lucy to go in convention's favor and end up with Cecil is that she would be more financially secure with Cecil than with George. Cecil is from the upper class so his family has plenty of money while George is of a lower class and does not have nearly as much to offer in this department. The conventional idea here would be to be with and marry Cecil. "The supreme importance to him of this idea appears again and again in his books and it is when automatism's such as social pressures and insecurities threaten to intervene that he grows most concerned." (Richards, I.A.) Forester seems most concerned and it seems to bother him most when social pressures threaten to determine how people think and make decision about their lives, especially quite important decisions such as who to spend the rest of your life with. Such is the heart of the problem that Forester has focused "A Room with a View" on. Lucy is choosing to go on with convention and pick the upper class Cecil or brake away and pick George who is of a lower class financially but of a higher moral fiber and a much nicer person. This article depicts Andrew Carnegie as more than a "ruthless and grasping" Pittsburgh steel manufacturer or millionaire. He was a skillful and efficient businessman for sure. But, he was also a "man of steel with a heart of gold." Who never forget the hard times of his youth or the love of family?

His life began in the town of Dunfermline Scotland to an impoverished family. This poverty taught him a very valuable lesson and guided him the rest of his life. It made him want to become more than a poor laborer working for wages.

On the surface Carnegie appeared to be a ruthless businessman with one thought in mind, money. He worked his way up the ladder to become the richest man in the world at that time. He became the Rockefeller of steel. This climb was sometimes turbulent. At his Homestead plant his manger Henry Clay Firch stopped a union strike with the aid of Pinkerton detectives at the cost of human lives. Carnegie's tactics were a little subtler. He wrote in his files that money was "one of the worst species of idolatry" and that once he mad his fortune he was going to share with others before it degraded him beyond the hope of permanent recovery."

He accomplished this in two ways. First, he created an empire of steel and money. Second, he thought of others before himself. He even postponed his marriage to care for his ailing mother. He went even farther before his death by donating over 50 million dollars to free libraries, colleges, and educational grants.

I agree with this article that there were two faces to Andrew Carnegie. He was a ruthless executive while still retaining a compassionate and generous side. His heart was as large as his empire.

The article relates to the material in Chapter 18 that tells of Carnegie's struggle with the growth of his steel company and his journey as a self-made man. The World is Forever Changing

Human nature resists change because we are creatures of habits and routines. William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" shows the damage that can be done if a person is unwilling to change, and unable to let go of past ideals.

Emily Grierson is a Southern belle clinging to her old south mentality. She was raised in the south firmly entrenched in the hierarchy of the old wealthy families complete with southern white supremacy ideals. Miss Emily's father instilled in her a belief just as the old southern ways believed that she was above society, and did not have to obey the law of the land or the impending change. "Thus she passed from generation to generation--dear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil, and perverse." Miss Emily kept her old black servant, and her big southern house, the only one left in the town. People saw her less and less, and her inability to change kept her secluded from society. Miss Emily didn't live in the same world that the rest of the town's people lived in. As they evolved she stayed in the past finally leading to her becoming delusional.

She needs to have everything fit into her view of the world. This singular need, to continue with her old South beliefs, overrides everything else. Falling in love doesn't even overcome her need to protect her southern ways. When Emily meets Homer Barron at first it seems that she might overcome the fact that he was northern, and a construction foreman. When some of the town's people begin to talk behind her back, Emily must protect her reputation, which above all else is of importance to a southerner. Emily must find a solution that enables her to save herself and keep Homer. She preserves her public face by pretending to prepare for marriage. She keeps Homer without having to embarrass herself by marrying someone inappropriate by killing him, and keeping his body in her house. Emily manages to hold on to her past, and have Homer forever. Emily's descent into her delusional state didn't begin with Homer. When her father died, she denied that he was dead for three days by keeping the body in her house. She couldn't accept his death. She even cut her hair at one point to try to revert back into a child. "When we saw her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl." She became more crazy as the time went on, and as more changes occurred.

As she clung to the past, her future could never develop. She could not move on, and evolve with the rest of the town's people and the new South. As new generations became the town's "backbone and the spirit of the town", Miss Emily shut herself completely off and never came out of her house. Shutting herself off was the only way for her to resist the changing world. Miss Emilys physical, emotional and mental degeneration was a result of her lack of change. Her decay was even evident physically. She grew fatter, her hair turned gray, and grew very long. Emily was stuck in time, and as a result she began to deteriorate. If you live in the past you cannot evolve as a person.

As the times began to change, the town moved on toward the future. Factories replaced the houses around Miss Emily's house. This shows the gradual change of the past into the present. The past was replaced with present industrialization. There was also an attitude of the people toward the influences of the people in the community that were seen as powerful. The working class began to see and believe in its own self worth. The past influences of the old south and the powerful august names no longer mattered. Miss Emily's house was in the middle of factories, and was seen as "an eye sore among eyesores". It was the last home representing the old south, and all that Emily had left. Miss Emily and her house stood as the last obstruction to the modernization that was taking place in Jefferson. It symbolizes the clinging to the old ways, and everything that Miss Emily believes. She manages to die with dignity in her own home with her old negro servant taking her memories, and her southern reputation with her. She died locked in her home, and locked in her traditions.
