Analysis of The Crucible

The language used in The Crucible is Arthur Miller's adapted version of the language spoken at the times found in the actual court records of the trials. The language in general is archaic, giving you the feeling that it is a very different society being portrayed, for example the very first line of the play is "My Betty be hearty soon?' from Tituba. The last scene would be set in the village church as a kind of judging ground, and showing some of the play's irony that Proctor should have to damn himself in a holy place to prove to other's that he is faithful. At the beginning, Elizabeth and Proctor would be standing at the front of the church in front of a cross or an alter (if puritan churches have alters) with a window from behind them lighting the otherwise shady scene. Elizabeth would be standing to one side, only partially illuminated as Proctor paced back and forth in front of her, saying his lines. Elizabeth would try to comfort him, putting her hand out towards him as if to rest on his shoulder if he weren't moving to comfort and calm him down. The other characters would enter through the church doors, striding past the pews where in a play an audience could be seated giving them a dramatic entrance and letting the audience see them closely as they walk past. When Danforth enters, he strides in with Parris rushing to keep up, Hale following to show the relationships between them, Danforth being the leader, Parris following what ever he does and Hale being dragged along as he now doubts the righteousness of their actions.

As Danforth says his next line, Proctor should gain more strength disbelieving the stubbornness of Danforth, so have a defiant look in his eye when he tears the paper to shreds. At this, Parris should fall to his knees and try to pick up the peaces, knowing that the town will now blame him and he will lose office if Proctor stands as a martyr.

Proctors crying our is also said in such a forceful way to show how strongly he feels about keeping his name, and the theme of names in the play.

As Proctor gives his last speech he would say his lines a little teary eyed, but gain strength as Elizabeth starts to walk towards him so directing his line 'white enough to keep it from such dogs' defiantly at Danforth. Proctor and Elizabeth should meet half way and when he says his final words quietly just to her (and the audience) he should have his hands on her arms, at once trying to comfort her and keep her strong, before hugging her one last time. As they separate and Rebecca says her line, Danforth should start walking towards them, saying his last line as he walks and directing 'corruption' towards Proctor as he storms past them and strides down the aisle and off-stage. Proctor and Rebecca are then escorted away, leaving only Parris , Elizabeth and Hale behind. Parris should go to Elizabeth hurriedly here, saying his line, then looking from the doorway to Elizabeth, hurrying one way to call his line to her before running out after Proctor. Hale should do much the same, only look more to Elizabeth than the door as though the last hope remains in her. Hale breaks down on his knees here, shaking his open hands up at her as though in a final plea as Elizabeth walks aside. Then, when delivering her ending line, Elizabeth is standing on her own, facing the aisle so that the sunlight falls on her, looks forlornly after Proctor and says her last line tearfully but with grace before falling to her knees and weeps silently as Hale stands up behind her. This makes for a dramatic ending as well as showing the strengths of the characters.

Sherwood Anderson begins the book Winesburg, Ohio with "The Book of Grotesque". The short story introduces the idea that people take vague thoughts, or many vague thoughts and change them into truths they live by. The people who do this are called grotesques. Another story in the book ends with Doctor Parcival explaining to George Willard that he believes that everyone in the world is Christ and we are all crucified. People base their decisions on their beliefs or "truths" and because we all have different truths people's actions may be misunderstood. This decision was based on his truths and he knows that no one will understand his reason because they have different truths. This is similar to Jesus who tried to instill the words of God, which were his truths on the people. People did not want to try to understand because they had their own truths that may have kept them from making effort to see his.

Jesus was crucified because he caused pandemonium in the town with his beliefs. Some religions say that he was crucified so that the sin of man can be forgiven and so that they can reach salvation. When Christ died on the cross he was laid to rest in a cave and a rock was used

to close it. One morning the rock had been moved away and Jesus was gone. Since Jesus had disappeared from the cave and he died for man, people began to believe he was the Son of God and adopt his truths. Thousands of years later people still adopt and believe in his truths.

When we die however, people don't adopt our truths or even try to understand them. There is nothing to make them believe they are true unlike Jesus. This is why Doctor Parcival is going to be "uselessly crucified" he has not finished his book and therefore he has not taught his truths. When he is "hung on a lamp post on Main Street" people will not adopt his truths.

Webster's Dictionary defines crucifixion not only as being put to death by being nailed to a cross but as being treated cruelly or being tormented. The characters in Winesburg, Ohio open up to George and try in instill upon him their truths because he is so quiet. They are unaware of his truths because he is so quiet. He listens to them and doesn't argue against their thoughts. If someone is firm on their beliefs they may argue against other's beliefs. People are willing to explain their truths to George because they hope that he will understand them and take them as his own. Doctor Parcival may be saying that everyone will be criticized for his or her truths. People will disagree with them and maybe even dislike them. Everyone will be treated cruelly because they hold truths different from everyone else's. Just as Jesus and Doctor Parcival will die because of their actions based on their truths.

People try to instill their truths on others, but because they too have truths they are unwilling to understand them. Christ also tried to teach his truths to others and many were against him because of that. After he was crucified people began to adopt his truths. Our death or crucifixion however, is not as significant because it does not teach others our truths. To crucify may also mean to be treated cruelly. Doctor Parcival is saying that like Christ we live by our truths and because of that each one of us will be treated cruelly or "crucified".

In the previous century there have been two major series of fantasy novels; "Lord of the Rings" and more recently "Harry Potter". The genre, fantasy, is very broad, but generally contains one main character, the protagonist, who is fighting for, or against something, often against evil. We see an entirely new world full of many different magical creatures including elves, dragons and giants. Harry boards at school for a vast majority of the novels, so the setting is generally at his school, which is an incredibly old castle. The writer, JK Rowling, has described the castle incredibly well, without using useless jargon. Unlike in the Lord of the Rings, in which the characters move into has many different settings as the novel develops, Rowling was able to slowly create an image of the school as the story unfolds.

The setting in "The Lord of the Rings" requires much more depth in the description of setting as it is commonly unlike our real Earth. The writer, Tolkien, has incorporated a sense of reality into the settings, by giving his world a feel of an old Earth. This is similar to Harry Potter in the sense that the castle is hundreds of years old and although the novel is set in current times, their world of magic remains in a time from many years past. Both writers have created a setting in which the reader feels as though they are a part of the scene, watching from a distance.

The characters in both novels may not be entirely human, however all have very human qualities enabling the audience to relate to them with ease. In both novels the main protagonists have mentors who are able to bring calm and security to the scene when all seems lost. Harry Potter is an adolescent wizard, he is very kind in nature and often worries about what other people might think of him. He is to be admired for his fair nature and undoubtedly courageous acts. The main character in "The Lord of the Rings", Frodo Baggins, is also very strong willed and performs many courageous acts. Frodo too is quite young, by the age standards in the novel, and although in appearance is less human than Harry, his human side is showed through various strengths and weaknesses.

The main antagonists in "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings" are both evil, as the fantasy genre generally requires. Voldemort, in "Harry Potter" had tried to kill Harry as a baby and due to that some of his powers have been given to Harry himself. This is similar to "The Lord of the Rings" in that a kind of power comes with the ring that has been passed on from the maker of the ring. Both of the evil characters, Sauron being the one in "The Lord of the Rings", are hungry for power. They both need to gain back what they lost in order to restore the power they crave. There is a kind of mystery kept around the main antagonists in both "Harry Potter" and "The Lord of the Rings". We can see that the main similarities in the two novels lie within the main characters.

Another component of the novels that is comparable is the intended audience. "The Lord of the Rings" series was written for a much older audience than that of "Harry Potter". The age the audience has been written for is also reflected in the use of language in both books. Rowling has used relatively simple language. She hasn't used long-winded, almost poetic sentences as Tolkien has. Rowling keeps her audience interested by keeping her writing straight to the point, incorporating made-up words and phrases. For example Rowling creates all sorts of interesting names for her wizards, such as Dumbledore and Lupin. She also uses words for spells that come from Latin and various other sources put together to create many interesting words and phrases. Rowling's book is easy to read and is able to keep its readers interested because she keeps the plot moving and creates perfect imagery without needing to include too much detail.

Tolkien, unlike Rowling, has had to use many imaginary words and phrases to fit into his fantasy novel set in a different world. Because most of his characters are not human, he was forced to use language that is entirely foreign to his reader. In the story, The Old Man and the Sea, Santiago is an example of determination and hope. He had is unlucky days but he was bound to succeed and had the strength for prayer which allowed hope to help him and lead him to be a success. Even though Santiago didn't get the fish, he sill succeeded because he allowed determination and hope to guide him.

He waited patiently and he was determined that he would catch a fish and that is what happened.

To me Santiago succeeded because he allowed hope to guide him in the right direction. For example, Santiago prayed for the death of the fish. "Blessed the Virgin, pray for this fish. Wonderful though he is." (pg.65) Santiago prayed to the Virgin to pray for the death of the fish. He hoped powerfully for the death so much he prayed to the Virgin. Furthermore, Santiago wished that he could show the fish how strong he was. He also wished he could be like the fish, strong. "I wish I could show him what sort of man I am." (pg.64) "I wish I was the fish he thought, with everything he has against only my will and my intelligence. (pg.64) Santiago had wished to be something else. Why? He was a wonderful thing. He hoped to have the strength of the fish that fought against his will and intelligence.

After that, he regrets his wrong behavior, but it has been the lost chance for him. Finally, he has lost his last chance by himself.
